morning, the faa is forming a team of experts to examine flight safety after several recent close calls involving commercial planes. in the past few months, there have been a series of very serious potential mishaps that could have caused terrible loss of life. a midair scare in december just recently came to light a united airlines plane departing maui took a nosedive plummeting more than 1400 ft. in about 20 seconds, coming within 775 ft of the pacific ocean. i knew with our kids in between us. you know, this could be it. passengers say they were praying for a miracle while others were screaming. remember looking now and then i really thought i saw just a glimpse of the ocean and i thought what's going on? it was like the tower of terror and just the land. i mean, i just felt like my stomach was my throat pilots regained altitude and flew on to san francisco united says the pilots are receiving additional training.

another recent close call was that new york's jfk airport, a delta plane, nearly colliding with an american airlines flight that was crossing an active runway. this could have been the worst aviation disaster in us history. the american airlines pilots are now complying with subpoenas from the ntsb after the initially declined three requests to be interviewed as part of the investigation, there is likely no cockpit recording from either of the american or united close calls. that's because both planes continued with their flight plans and the cockpit data recordings only last for two hours. airplane takes off and flies a long distance. it gets overwritten, and that data is lost. the faa is pushing for longer 25 our recorders so that even if an airplane is on a longer flight will be able to go back and look at the data figure out what went wrong. the faa says the new safety review will examine the u. s, aerospace systems, structure, culture and processes. the faa says it will hold a summit next month with industry leaders to discuss what actions need to be taken to improve safety. we're learning

the atlantic. the washington post reports. u. s officials had been tracking the balloons since it was first launched in china several days earlier than the white house has acknowledged. abc psychology is here with more good morning. good morning, rina . the white house says it's likely these objects are just balloons tied to some benign purpose and explanation that doesn't sit well with lawmakers. this morning. there's new information surrounding the chinese spy balloon. u s officials tell abc news the spy balloon, which was intended for surveillance may have been inadvertently blown over the u. s mainland by unusual weather conditions, according to the washington post, u. s military and intelligence agencies have been tracking the balloon for nearly a week, even watching it as it lifted off from its home base near china, eventually taking an unexpected northern turn towards alaska solution islands where it could have countered strong winds that pushed it further south. however another senior us officials casting doubt on the report

telling abc it sounds like the intelligence community is trying to save face. former national security advisor john bolton criticizing the administration on cnn. could they say with assurance that that payload under the balloon, which they described as equivalent to three busses? did not contain a nuclear weapon. meanwhile new dramatic cockpit audio from f 16 fighter pilots tracking that unidentified flying object over michigan's lake huron. missile was launched at the object and missed the second missile hit the object that wreckage still at the bottom of lake huron. the two other objects shot down over. alaska and canada have also yet to be retrieved. the white house says the objects could just be balloons tied to some commercial or benign purpose, an explanation that doesn't sit well with some lawmakers on capitol hill. the administration is saying we don't yet know what these last three objects are, and we don't want to characterize until we recover

them. but on the other hand, it wasn't a threat. both of those things can't be true. there's a lot of information to recover and the administration is on top of this and very, very good job. now u. s officials tell us norad is working to recalibrate their systems in order to identify threats like spy balloons, all while weeding out things like weather balloons and other similar objects. rina thanks today, china's government once again accused the us of flying balloons over its airspace claimed the us has denied rescue teams in turkey and syria are still listening for voices in the rubble nine days after the historic earthquake, two brothers were rescued from the rubble after being trapped for nearly 200 hours. the extent of the humanitarian crisis is hard to overestimate. abc is james longman is there what was a rescue operation has now turned into humanitarian crisis all across this country. tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands are living in camps like these, and many of them are syrian.

what the tests were showing as far as the air brockovich who fought for clean water in her california town is demanding the government do more for residents . so now they're even more concerned because they were told it was safe to go back. they've been drinking the water now they're told you can't drink the water. the governor says he was told the train was not considered a highly hazardous material train. the railroad was not required to notify state officials about what the train was carrying. is absurd. and we need to look at this. congress needs to take a take a look. brockovich agrees. there has been no independent testing. yet things are dying, and this community just doesn't feel they're being seen there being heard. brockovich says questions remain as to the extent of the contamination, she says areas in neighboring pennsylvania could also be affected. andrew rina.
