>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> an armed carjacking suspect shot by police in oakland in just the past 20 minutes. we got an updid -- update from local police. i'm dan ashley. ama: and i'm ama daetz. dan: officers are still on the scene. we're seeing a lot of evidence markers and police officer motorcycle is still on its side. ama: for the latest let's go to ryan curry who is there live. ryan? reporter: dan, ama, good evening. oakland police confirmed moments ago they shot and armed robbery suspect earlier this afternoon. that suspect has been taken to the hospital with nonlife

threatening injuries. as you can see, officers are still on the scene processing evidence as well as investigating what led up to that shooting. they say a motorcyclist driving erratically eventually crashed at 105th and international in east oakland. this happened in the early part of the afternoon. police just revealed more information about what they say happened. they tell us the motorcyclist was not being chased when the rash -- when he crashed but did start running when he saw officers nearby. >> following the vehicle collision and again a solo vehicle collision, no other vehicles were involved. he ran on foot eastbound to 107th avenue and international boulevard area. at that time, he brandished a firearm, pointed it at a victim inside of a vehicle, a passer-by, and ended up, you know, demanding the vehicle. that's when officers were

nearby. they began issuing commands for the individual to put down the gun. he failed to comply and that's when officers discharged their firearms. reporter: a witness got video of this man being taken into custody after the shooting. they say the injuries are non-life-threatening. oakland police describe the suspect as a black man in his late 20's, early 30's and are asking witnesses to come forward. police have blocked off several roads around international avenue and 105th here in oakland. they are still processing evidence and collecting and investigating what possibly led up to the shooting. as of now the roads around this area are still blocked off. ryan curry, abc 7 news. ama: thank you for that update. tonight for the first time we're hearing from former oakland police chief laurent armstrong after he was fired by oakland mayor sheng thao. we have heard others have been

placed on leave following investigations that led to dismissal. >> i would like to clearly say i was wrongly terminated for standing up for the city of oakland. >> former police chief armstrong in his own words three days after being fired from the job. >> as a police chief i did my job a belie i did it well. >> he was terminated by mayor sheng thao on wednesday. >> i'm no longer confident he can do the work needed to achieve the vision. >> this after the chief was placed on paid leave for a month after a report questioned his conduct surrounding one of his sergeants. the former chief said he did nothing wrong. >> my termination was never about the facts, about performance, or my ability to effectively lead the oakland police department. my termination was about federal monitor robert wardshaw and the mayor's failure to fight for the

oakland community. >> the oakland police department confirms two o.p.d. lieutenants, were put on paid leave last month for mishandling the same investigations that led to chief armstrong's firing. >> every error made by the police department is considered a scandal. >> this week community advocates and faith leaders rallied in support of armstrong. >> we're going to demand that chief armstrong be rehired and back in his rightful place. shouldn't public safety be the main concern of oakland? >> armstrong says he's grateful for the support. >> for the first time in my 24 years of being at the police department you're actually seeing the community support a police chief and support a police department. >> it's unclear what armstrong's next move is but he says he's evaluating his legal options to preserve his reputation. >> the voice of oakland speaks loud and will not be silenced by this monitor.

>> in oakland, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. dan: new details about the effort to crack down on prostitution in san francisco's mission district, an issue first brought to light by abc 7 news. police say they issued more than 30 citations along cap street in the mission since traffic enforcement was increased a week ago. again after our reporting. more undercover operations are planned in the coming days. earlier this week, supervisor hillary ronan introduce a bil to introduce legislation to legalize sex work, allowing cities to set up so-called red light districts. ama: the man accused of the deadly home explosion will be release odd strict house detention. a judge said he believes darren pris didn't intentionally cause the explosion but acted out of negligence. investigators claim he ranked a hash oil lab out of the home that was destroyed in the explosion, killing his wife and

injuring her caregiver. he was charged with charges from drugs to child endangerment. dan: tonight we hear from the family of rita price, and they hope no matter what happens with the suspect, that she is remembered. >> no matter where she was she lit up a room. >> it is that effervescent personality that her friends will remember most, that still on display after a near-death stroke in 2013. >> when she suffered that stroke we all went to agood-bye. reporter: but it was rita's determination to live that helped her survive nine more years. she tragically passed away when the home she shared her husband, daren price, exploded. >> it could have been prevented. we can't know. reporter: darren was arrested for drug manufacturing, child

endangerment and manslaughter days later rm he was released with an ankle monitor, it's a decision rita's friends could not process. for rita's longtime massage therapist he encourages people to focus on rita's legacy and not rush to judgment. >> we still believe he's doing -- he took care of rita and her family, her kids, you know. that part we have no doubt about it. he do it faithfully for years. that's all we know. a person is more complex than. that. reporter: to remember rita's kind, selfless nature. >> she is our bright spot. every week we look forward seeing her. >> and to think of her three children. those i spoke with today shared this message. >> i encourage everyone who listened, who know her or don't know her to reach out and help them. >> there's no one like her. no one. reporter: no matter what happens next they hope her spirit lives

on. in san francisco, news. dan: a gofundme account has been set up to help rita's three children. you can go to abc7.com, we have a link to it. ama: this video shows collier glen spraying an unhoused woman with a hose last month in dunntown san francisco. according to the "san francisco chronicle," the restraining order bans him from having contact with the woman he sprayed. he faces a misdemeanor battery charge for the incident and is set to be back this court in march. dan: danville police aced a man this morning after a standoff. the footage you see here shows a heavy police presence around glasgow drive. police say a man barricaded himself inside a home of allegedly assaulting earlier today. they took him into custody about 3:30 today. police have not released further

details. ama: a series of thefts at all ta beauty stores has led to the recovery of stolen merchandise and much more. investigators from the c.h.p. and the sheriff's department tracked a car involved in those thefts to a home in oakland.ha h of stolen merchandise. they also recovered an illegal assault rifle, a handgun and about $7,000 in cash. dan: still ahead, new details about the renovation timeline for the iconic castro theater and why it appears work won't start at least another year. ama: hate crime charges for a man accused of targeting members of the jewish community after two men were shot outside synagogues in southern california.

dan: the man accused of a shooting inside a sin gg. a judge denied him home detention today saying he poses a threat to the community he feel will be held in custody without bail. he is scheduled to appear in court next tuesday for his preliminary hearing. ama: in los angeles, federal hate crime charges filed against a gunman who shot jewish men in separate incidents outside of synagogues in the last two days. now los angeles police are increasing security around jewish institutions. abc news reporter melissa adon has the latest. reporter: the u.s. district attorney's office filing federal hate crime charges against 28-year-old jamie tran. >> the complaint alleged tran, motivated by hate, targeted two victims because they were jewish or he believed them to be jewish. reporter: the jewish community in los angeles reacting as lapd

said both victims were shot while leaving synagogues. on wednesday, a man in his 40's was shot as he left morning prayer in the pico robertson as. police say a man in his 70's was shot after the victim also left a synagogue. >> kind of scary because it hasn't happened before. there's kids everywhere. you don't want to go outside. reporter: according to police both men are expected to survive and the community is on edge. some say they plan to stay home this weekend as police increase presence in places of worship. >> i've never seen anything like this. it's something i always hear about in another state or another city. new that hs hitting my own home, i feel like we're back in the 19 40's. reporter: on thursday night police announced the arrest of tran in connection with both shootings. a rifle and handgun were recovered, according to lapd. >> the motive behind them is not as important as what people are feeling now in the community. which is scared and afraid.

that they're being targeted because of who they are and their identity as a jewish american. reporter: anti-semitic attacks are rising nationwide. the anti-definition league reported a record number of documented cases of harass. , vandalism and violence directed against jewish people. dan: new developments today in the 1944 port chicago explosion that killed hundreds of soldiers in the east bay. a resolution introduced to recognize the victims and exonerate 50 black sailors court marshed by the navy. the port chicago incident was one of the worst mainland disasters of world war ii. 320 people die. the port chicago 50 were 50 men sentenced to death for refusing to return to work after the incident. >> still ahead, nostalgia and sadness as crews get ready to demolish a historic peer

dan: it does not look like the historic castro theater will be renovated any time soon. the 100-year-old theater's operator has said the castro is available for booking from april 15 through next january. another planet says making the theater available for use is the right thing to do since the renovation is delayed. there has -- there have not been many events at the castro since another planet took it over last january. the $20 million renovation is being staaled by concerns about preserves this historic theater. ama: a historic structure is going to be demolished next week. the pier was hit so hard last month by a major wave of bon reir zack fuentes spent the day there as officials and community members prepare to say good-bye. >> this park is all year long, we have people here all the time. every single day.

the damage. >> this pier was twice as long. length of that pier. used to go all the way to the boat. >> the wave event and storms didn't just impact the pier but also the campgrounds which have seen nearly all the seawall destroyed. they're preparing for more eextreme weather events and coastal erosion. >> we're dealing with a different climate. we have different hazards. we have to be, i think, thinking into the future, our investments will be here to make sure we have access for as many people. reporter: saturday afternoon, the public is invited to a farewell cleanup event. next week the demolition work begins. a lot of factors had to be considered before they can consider rebuilding the pier. more will be announced after the cleanup. >> we'll be at the forefront of helping the public to understand the changes that have occurred, getting feedback from them about what they want to see sphoors future recreation, how we're going to provide thatted and
