committing crimes against humanity in ukraine. now, the u.s. last year already formally accused russia of war crimes in ukraine, but crimes against humanity are an even graver category and involve the systemic targeting of the civilian population. ammunition supplies start to run short and they are in a race to keep pace with the fighting as russia tries to start its long awaited new offensive. russian forces are pressing to encircle the city of bakhmut, russia is sending waves of troops at ukrainian positions including thousands of prisoners and the front there does resemble a world war i trench warfare and suffering hundreds of casualties a day but ukrainian forces are holding out and denying vladimir putin a symbolic victory ahead of the first year anniversary of the war next week. whit. >> all right, patrick, thank you. now to travel this holiday weekend and the spring break season kicking off early. the tsa preparing for record numbers of passengers

been victimizing their communities and feel like fani willis has every right to utilize she's lyrics in this week. >> young thug pleaded not guilty to all counts. in a statement to abc news his lawyer says mr. williams has committed no crime whatsoever and you can catch "rat trap" on february 23rd only on hulu. >> wow. now to our series, "one match, second chance" and a story from kabc. how one woman in need of a bone marrow transplant wasn't able to find a match but her son stepping up able to save her life. kabc has the story. >> reporter: in 2018, doctors discovered that cyndee's platelets had dropped to dangerous levels. >> i was basically living off of transfusions. >> reporter: her diagnosis, severe aplastic anemia. her immune system was attacking her bone marrow where blood cells are made. when treatments failed her only hope was a bone marrow transplant. >> they checked for a 10 out of

catch the hurricanes versus the capitals in the 2023 nhl stadium series that's tonight 8:00 p.m. eastern on abc. and espn plus. so now let's bring in wtvd meteorologist kweilyn murphy. kweilyn, fans so excited for the game. what's the weather going to be like there in raleigh? >> let me tell you, ultra excited. fan fest yesterday in the rain, people were out and about. this is a huge injection of energy for not only raleigh but also our local community in terms of vendors and restaurants and, you know, it's been just difficult times for people coming back from the albany. this will be huge for the city, of course. want to turn to weather because we have very cool video of in that froze. thankfully not the case here. raleigh around the upper 20s. nice warm-up in temperatures for the northeast with temperatures climbing into the 50s in raleigh by saturday into sunday, 60 degree, 68 monday and then pittsburgh up to 55 degrees

universities that is music to our ears. students at one school getting their first chance to compete in the battle of the bands and ike ejiochi has the story. ♪ that's just the way ♪ >> reporter: this morning, the honda battle of the bands is e annual invitational showcase started in 2003. it was created to recognize the country's best bands from historically black colleges and universities.ern event was put n thevent for the first time at an hbcu, alabama state all while welcoming a newcomer. if you had to describe the magnificent marching machine in one word, what would it be? >> magnificent. >> why is that? >> because it is. >> reporter: that's dr. jorim reid, the new band director for the magnificent marching machine, morgan state university's renowned marching band in the middle of baltimore, maryland, one of six bands

performing this year. >> one, two. ♪ >> reporter: dr. reid was given the baton after his predecessor held it for 49 years. under dr. reid, the band hasn't missed a downbeat. >> i'm fortunate to even have been considered to follow the footsteps of someone who was here for 50 years. the band has a very unique sound, style and it's overlooked often because of where we're located. >> oh, you know, that's different right there. what is it that you guys do that sets you apart? >> one of the things, our drills. to try to instill more discipline, it's bringing in the level of focus. >> reporter: off the field spectators get to see tight dance move andcrobat on the field band members and drum majors tasked with guiding

students leading up to and during the performance. morgan state will have four drum majors and for the first time in decades a woman, angel michell will be one of them. >> it means very much to me. it's a lot of pressure, but i'm always thinking about the impact in the young women that can look up to me for my position so it means a lot. >> reporter: the magnificent marching machine is no stranger to the big stage commanding audiences at every level from halftime shows at baltimore ravens games to marching in the macy's thanksgiving day parade. the honda battle of the bands just another chance for this band to be magnificent. >> we decide to take on the challenge and go ahead and go through with it.

professional performer, and "chicago" is my broadway debut. it just feels so serendipitous and like the fates were watching me. >> reporter: stepping into the role that landed queen latifah an oscar nomination 20 years ago playing matron momma morton eight times a week. >> i love this character. she's an entertainment agent and the jail is her day job so in those ways i'm like, i'm the older character and i really enjoy playing her. >> was there a lot of pressure or did you psych yourself out at all? >> well, i'm a high-strung anxious virgo so the amount of pressure i was putting on myself was quite large and i'm telling you third night on it's been like, you would have thought that i've been here for 20 years doing this. >> reporter: jinkx joining a long list of performers taking center stage throughout "chicago's" 26-year run including current leading lady lana gordon who plays velma kelly and as roxie hart, charlotte d'amboise, a more than 25-year veteran of the show. e the show. what, what, oh, my god. i finally looked her up and i've seen everything she's done now

so the broadway community is coming to resee "chicago." they've all seen it but they're coming back plus a younger crowd that have never seen are coming so it's packed every night. it's filled with joy and jinkx has brought that to the show. >> she for me is joy, light, love, i know when i come out the stage door and people say, well, i've come for jinkx but now i have -- this is my first broadway experience and now i am hooked. >> it's just so easy to perform in this cast because it is like a family, and everyone told me that coming in. people come back to the show time and time again.

people come back to visit just because they miss the rest of the family. bebe neuwirth came and you would have thought she never left because everyone is just like, oh, bebe is here, aunt bebe is here. it was amazing. ♪ >> i feel like you're opening doors here for other people. >> objectively i know that this is a big deal. there's a lot still to do, but i fully believe that the torch has been passed to me by the people who came before me and it is now my responsibility to hold this torch as well as i possibly can until i pass it to the next person. of course it means a lot to me to hear that other young nonbinary performers, trans performers, drag queen performers see me on broadway, see me in this role and think, now i can do it, too. >> i had the opportunity to see "chicago" this past thursday after i did these interviews and it was incredible to see their chemistry on stage. they've really become friends in real life and it translated beautifully.
