>> unbelievable. a speeding suv slams into a house, starting a fire. somehow, no one was seriously injured in this crash. good evening and thank you for joining us. new tonight, two children had to be taken to the hospital following that crash, but also a concerned neighbor. the vehicle struck a gas line, which likely sent flames shooting into the air. ryan curry was at the scene and round out likely caused the driver to lose control.

ryan: surveillance video captures the moment a car lost control in an oakland hills neighborhood, crashingnto a you c see high am from the car after the crash. >> i heard the commotion and got a message from my next-door neighbor to got -- to get out of the house as soon as possible. >> clip lives in the area and says he got out as soon as possible. >> when i walked out my front door, i could see the garage next door to mine was on fire as well, so i was afraid it was going to spread. >> oakland fire says pg&e did eventually cut gas to the neighborhood. they suspect the car's brakes stopped working. >> as they came across the intersection, it sounds like they possibly had brake failure and came across and lost control and struck the house. >> they say two adults and three children were in the car when it crashed.

>> due to the mechanism of the injury, the fact the vehicle came down campus drive across redwood and struck the structure with force, we want to make sure the kids are ok and checked out. >> oakland fire says the official cause of the crash that led to the fire is under investigation. morrison says he has lived in this neighborhood for 22 years and says that hill has had several crashes. >> probably three or four times we have had people come barreling through that intersection and hit houses or hit the retaining wall. dion: to developing news carter center released a statement today saying jimmy carter decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice

plains, georgia, now receiving hospice care. at 98 years old, he is the oldest living former president. he has battled health issues in recent years, including hip surgery in 2019. in 2015, he confronted cancer that had spread to his liver and brain. the carter center in atlanta writing that after a series of short hospital stays, the former president decided to receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. he has the full support of his family and medical team, saying his family is grateful for the concern shown by so many of his admirers. a peanut farmer and naval engineer, carter went on to serve as the 39th president of the united states from 1977 to 1981. after leaving office, he continued a life of public service, working with habitat for humanity, building homes for those in need. senator mike brown saying on twitter carter's life should be

an example for all. carter's grand son tweeting on saturday, i saw both of my grandparents. they are at peace, and as always, their home is full of love. thank you all for your kind words. dion: spencer c known jimmy carter since the late 1980's. we have talked about this -- you got to know him during your time at good morning america. >> i did indeed. my first interview with him was in 1988 at the carter presidential library. his 75th bi was fortunate enough to be the mc of that event. 20 years later, i mc his 95th birthday celebration. later, i interviewed both

president and misses carter at one of the hold -- one of the homes they were building for habitat for humanity. this was a joint celebration of president carter's 95th birthday and misses carter's 92nd birthday. we went to the side of the habitat for humanity build i stayed there for the remainder of the day after the interview and got to know them better personally. in 2010, he appeared on "the view" for the bay, a program we did hear from abc 7. he was promoting one of his books -- a prolific author. he has written dozens of books. i have had lots of interactions, been very fortunate, lots of interaction with the carter's and especially president carter. he is just a remarkable person. arguably the finest person i have ever met. dion: one of the stories you told me was how he stays at public events, he is not just

their for show. he genuinely believes in the cause he donates his time for. >> absolutely. he has donated his entire life, especially his post-presidency, to projects for impoverished people around the world. when he and misses carter go to these habitat for humanity builds, they call them, they are not there for the publicity. he once your data get those cameras out of my face and let me work. he is seriously committed to being a faithful servant. dion: that is so special. also when it comes to your relationship, were you able to reach out to anyone with his family or close friends to, you know, send your regards? spencer: i did reach out to a very close friend of the carter family, a renowned pianist named david osborne, who actually played a pivotal role in inviting me to mc those two events. i contacted david today.

he's very sad, of course. he said something like, it's going to be a dark day in my life when we lose jimmy. connection you have been able to form over the years. thank you for sharing with us. a deadly crash in the east bay has killed the driver of a tesla and injured several firefighters on i-680 in walnut creek. cornell barnard says despite being involved in the wreck, firefighters jumped into action to help. >> we were all seated in, belted in. >> his crew was about to clear the scene of a non-injury accident on northbound 680 and walnut creek on saturday when their fire engine was suddenly rocked. >> very jolting. it almost did not feel like it

was real. in the rig going forward. >> the chp says it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were a factor, and it is still unknown if the tesla had its autopilot feature engage. while firefighters were working, another car on the freeway narrowly missed them. >> it was very tense. it was like, just had one incident, and it was like we were about to have another incident. >> treated for lower back pain, one of my guys had a cut on his hand. >> most of the firefighters were back on duty sunday afternoon -- saturday afternoon. firefighters say this is not the first time a car has collided

with one of its trucks. >> it hasred ltlemes. itccurs so much throughout the on the forpa r accidts >> the fire department says the fire using the internet as a safety barrier to protect on scene. they remind viewers that the law requires drivers to slow down when they approach vehicles. >> i'm very proud of my guys. just as much as if we were in an accident, they all jumped in and started doing their job. 12-year-old child was struck in a hit and run today in east oakland. that incident happened on 30 4th avenue and international boulevard. police say the victim is currently in critical condition. investigators are still searching for the driver of that car. there's no description yet on the vehicle involved in the

crash. happening now on interstate 680, all northbound lanes are closed due to repaving work. here's a look at the impacted area. you can see the northbound lanes closed last night at 10:00 p.m. they will reopen tuesday morning at 5:00. caltrans posted these pictures today where you can see crews working on the project last weekend as well. lanes did reopen on time. after this weekend, there's one more weekend closure scheduled. keep in mind, southbound lanes are not affected. coming up, it is time to say goodbye. cleanup from last month's devastating storms along the coast gets going. the huge turnout as people say farewell to an iconic the important mission some san francisco firefighters are embarking on this weekend that will take them to south america.

dion: in santa cruz county, hundreds of community members turn out for a cleanup event. they were also there to say farewell to the 93-year-old fishing p it was damaged by storms, and officials say it is beyond repair. >> no question about it, there are so many memories about it. seeing it gone, it was kind of an icon to this area.

7 looking out over the cool bay waters, and these are our forecast headlines -- mild days and chilly warnings will come our way tomorrow and monday. we can expect wet, unsettled weather around the middle of the week, but for tonight, mainly clear skies. low temperatures will drop into the mid to upper 30's in most locations in the north bay -- actually, more than mid 80's in santa rosa. we are looking at a low of 33. in the east bay, mid to upper 30's. and on the coast, lowe's will be around 40 to 41 degrees. highs tomorrow, spring-like. 65 in oakland and san mateo, the inland east bay, mid to upper 60's. 70 degrees tomorrow at san rosa. here's a little forecast animation starting at noon monday to show you what is

bay area environmentalist is sharing his memories of working closely with jimmy carter. he tells us how they met and why he considers the 39th president much more than just a politician. >> i jimmy carter do solemnly swear -- >> i think he is a southern gentleman. he was dignified, sophisticated, had a good since of humor, a self-deprecating wit. he was always very kind to me. >> sitting down with us at his san mateo home, environmentalist and writer of white house, he has fond memories of jimmy carter, starting in the 1970's when he wrote a letter to than governor
