moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. ama: why go to the sierra when the sierra? bay area see the snow for her first time in decades. the landscape transforms into a wintry playground. dan: thank you for joining us. what a day. we occasionally see snow in the bay area but nothing like this. a rare winter storm brought more than a dusting. it blanketed the peaks and snow and it was falling in lower elevations as well, making for tricky travel on the roadways. ama: does anyone remember the last time we checked out the snow totals for the bay area? dan: let's go to sandhya patel who is tracking that for us. sandhya: this was a historic and memorable event. hamilton picking up inches. 14 inches of snow. los gatos, 10 to 12 inches. calistoga under that. st. helena, eight inches.

boulderreek, two to three inches. cloverdale, four inches. snow fell down to the valley floor in crescent city. pretty crazy stuff. live doppler 7. we are tracking snow showers around the northern part of the viewing area. clear lake, upper lake, the mountains will continue to see snow. we will be seeing lower elevation snow continuing. the snow event unfolded yesterday as you know. then it quickly commenced with strong thunderstorms. we got hail, downpours. the wider view with light level 1 storms as we head toward southern california. they are getting soaked as well. they are getting the snow. by 3:00 in the morning, rain and snow increases. we will be watching that for you tonight because we are also watching the temperatures. 34 degrees in santa rosa. freeze warnings and frost advisories from midnight to 9:00

a.m. upper 20's to mid 30's expect it by morning. another storm coming. what part of your weekend will be wet, coming up. dan: in the north bay, the snow has made things so dangerous along highway 29. it could stay close through the weekend. the closure starts at tubbs lane and goes all the way up to the lake county line. to rick campbell went up there tonight and found a lot of people heading to the hills to check out the snow. reporter: the sound of a not so familiar sight in napa county. >> no good. play with the snow. i'm really happy. reporter: the snow-covered hills seen from miles away, drawing people in. >> wow. play. enjoy this. reporter: the sleds coming out and smiles, too. the young and old are to higher elevation for a frolic and some fun. >> yeah. we just came to see the snow

from santa rosa. reporter: down the way, a sibling snowball fight. the low moan as making their way from napa. >> we live in a place where it's really sunny so we don't get snow at all. reporter: jesus says he's never seen anything like it. >> really weird. this never happens. first time in 18 years of living here. reporter: the best part. >> throwing snowballs at my siblings. reporter: mom and dad happy to watch from their warm vehicle. plenty of people busy having fun with the snow. others have been busy all day trying to clear it. >> we've been out working clearing roads. trying to help get around this apocalyptic snowstorm for us. reporter: nine inches of snow dropping in napa county. piling onto roads, the tracks left behind. have you ever seen anything like this? >> a couple of times. reporter: when was the last time

you saw it like this? >> never like this in my lifetime. reporter: abc7news. ama: sky 7 got a view of the bay area earlier today. this is near castro valley where you can see snow coming in peaks in the background. closer to mount hamilton, might -- you might think you are in the sierra. mother nature brought a rare sight of snow to the east bay today. residents in the oakland hills and berkeley areas got the best of it. berkeley cut heavy snowfall earlier today. white flakes on the road for a small time. some came together to make a snowman while others launched snowballs at each other. it was a delightful experience for residents, some calling it a winter wonderland. darn arbor said it's been 30 years since he has seen snow in the area. >> it is snowing more heavily than i've ever seen and berkeley. i've lived here for 30 years. ama: other areas like grizzly peak and walking miller park had

snowfall today. dan: a snowcapped mount diablo has become a huge attraction. we've seen snow up there before but nothing like this at the lower elevations. one local resident said it looked like a ski resort in the east bay and it really did. anser hassan found a lot of people trying to get a good shot. reporter: mount diablo is an iconic landmark. >> this is my this is my mountain. i love it. reporter: this 79-year-old has been trying to get the best picture. >> i've been driving all over town to get pictures. reporter: it was a huge draw >> it's amazing. i had to figure i would stop and take a picture. >> i've seen snow on the mountain but it's fun to see it. this morning, it was down even deeper on the mountain. it's beautiful.

reporter: ted mischa on says he's never seen it like this before. >> it's rare. i'm a big fan. i live over here. i see it all the time. to see it looking like a ski resort is pretty cool. ♪ reporter: this man came out to lafayette wanting the snow as a backdrop for his music video. you came all the way out just for this? >> yes. this is perfect. especially today because it was raining. we see snow in the mountains. it's rare. it's amazing. i love it. reporter: mount diablo was close to the public. lines of cars were turned away at the south gate entrance. that was a huge disappointment for this group that drove all the way from san jose. >> we were excited to look at the mount diablo snow. we are disappointed that we were turned back. reporter: why didn't you go to

someplace closer? >> we were thi sunset at mount diablo was good. reporter: hopefully they were able to get some pictures. abc7news. ama: we saw all kinds of wildlife venturing out today on mission peak. a coyote walking through the snow. it looked up at the chopper to see if we were dropping any food. it didn't bother the coyote one bit. in the south bay, dear on mount hamilton. there were four of them standing still in the snow when we flew over. the deer appeared quite comfortable, considering the conditions. dan: highway 17 is back open tonight after being closed for hours due to the snowy weather. the santa cruz highway was shut down southbound at bear creek road. the closures on highway 17 were caused by icy roads, a stock-car, and downed power lines. one powerline fell

ad. caltrans says there were at least 14 toppled trees as well. a lot of folks were shocked by how into the roads were today. >> i've been here for 23 years. this is the first time it's been a ghost town coming up to the road like this. dan: lanes were open back up just after 3:00 today. a spokesperson recommends that drivers slow down on slushy or icy roads to avoid spinouts. ama: the snow has made for dangerous conditions in the sierra. a big accident earlier in the day shut down traffic on westbound 80 for a while. numerous spinouts and other locations have led to traffic being held at times as crews come into clear the roadway. chains are required on the 80. on from placerville to myers. you can keep track of the current conditions and access the same live doppler 7 that are weather team uses anytime you

dan: david mears sat down president biden, one of the main takeaways was biden's bid to run again. questions around his age if he were reelected would -- were brought up. he replied, watch me. alluding to him running again. how he would perform. he asked about the investigation of classified documents found in the president's possession. the president didn't say much but he did share why he is delaying his announcement to run again. >> let me ask you the question everyone is asking. are you running again? >> apparently, someone interviewed my wife today. >> i heard that too. >> i got a call. my intention is to run. but there's too many other things i have to finish in the near-term before i start a campaign. dan: david asked him about the toxic terrain to roman and east palestine.

biden says anything they available. ama: today marks one year since the start of russia's invasion of ukraine. the war has displaced millions of ukrainians and recalled it in thousands of deaths on both sides. ceremonies took place today, some gathered and lit candles outside of an apartment building in ukraine that was damaged in the early days of the conflict. the ukrainian president held a rare news conference in the capital. he says victory is an inevitable for his country because of the continuing aid from western allies. if you want to help people in ukraine, we put together a full list of groups of nonprofits. it's on our website. dan: a popular san francisco radio dj is missing and police say he's considered at risk. jeffrey vandergrift hosts the jv show every morning. the station says they are working with police and his wife to help find him. he hasn't been seen since last

night. he's 54 years old and six feet tall. he has tattoos on his arms and above his right here. if you see him, please call police and let them know right away. ama: the state public health emergency ending tuesday. today was the final day of operations at the mass testing site in santa clara county. at its peak, it was testing 5000 people per day. now just a couple hundred on average. >> the volume of testing is something that can be handled in normal health care settings at this point. ama: tomorrow will be the final day for vaccinations at the fairground site. it's a final day for the counties smaller testing site in san martin. the fda has authorized the first at home over-the-counter test that can to test -- detect the flu and covid-19. it's made by emeryville-based lucy rachel. it uses a nasal swab similar to the at-home covid test that you are used to. they are selling the single use test for dan: dan: $99.

more stormwater coverage now. take a look at this video. this is from crescent city where it looks more like a scene from the east coast with snow melting on the waves. northern california got hit hard yesterday with high wind and powerful waves. ama: on the peninsula, a picturesque scene in san mateo county. plenty of snow on the ground as you see there. zach fuentes checked out the impact from the storm, fun and serious. reporter: snow like this is a site we so rarely get to see in the bay area. so rare that locals wanting to sled down the hill had to and provides -- improvise. this 2.5-year-old not knowing what to make of the snow. he warmed up to it and the temperatures did, turning the snow into/. leaving just enough or bay area families to enjoy. >> to drive 12 minutes to come look at snow and not drive to tahoe, now we go home and have

hot cocoa. enjoy the day. the best of both worlds. snow, no snow. reporter: some like this student who did undergrad in michigan shocked to see that the snow followed him here. >> we came to the bay area and we were like, no way we will see snow. we saw snow. reporter: the snow didn't come without causing pickups. we came across several broken trees, downed branches, and fallen power lines. >> it was crazy. trees were falling. we thought we were going to get locked up there. reporter: caltrans urging everyone to drive safe. >> this is rare for us in the bay area to receive such beautiful snow but we have to be mindful and safe when we are out there on the roadways. pay attention to the road. pay attention to the signs and use caution. reporter: crews have been working to keep the roads safer people to continue enjoying the rather. -- whether. >> our crews are doing the best

that they can't to clear trees off of the roadways as well as ice and snow in various areas. reporter: taking in as much of the snow as they can while they can. >> we will look around and just look at the scenery. reporter: abc7news. ama: the storm brought heavy rain, hail, snow, and lightning. in san francisco, these pictures show lightning strikes that have been happening multiple times throughout the night. dan: that's a lot of snow. in the sierra, over two feet of snow fell in the last 24 hours. the lab says nearly four feet of snow fell within three days. there will be even more snow over the weekend and likely into next week as well. ama: let's take a live look from our camera at zephyr cove. we have seen snow falling just about all night. it's tapering off. there's a winter storm warning tonight for the sierra. it's in effect until tomorrow

morning. dan: going home last night on the bay bridge, it was slushy. really slushy. all the cool air under the bridge freezing the roadway. i wanted to take a video but didn't want to do it while i was driving. ama: what else do we have coming our way? sandhya: the concern is more snow showers and cold air and the possibility of black ice. you will cyp or get take a look at these temperatures. close to freezing in santa rosa, cloverdale, and ukiah. it will be a cold night. 30's and 40's around the region right now. tomorrow morning, mid to upper 20's from cloverdale to lakeport, santa rosa. 35 degrees in concord. 34 in livermore. upper 30's around san francisco, oakland. 37 degrees in half moon bay. live doppler 7 now. we are seeing our next band of showers developing and some snow showers as well. take a look at the inland east

bay, right around clayton. we are seeing wintry weather. antioch, wet weather. around fairfield and vacaville, street-level radar, we are seeing showers. this is worth looking at one more time from our zephyr cove camera. light snow right now. snow is on the ground. the winter storm warning continues. snow has been piling up today. not a good idea to head up there. the winter storm warning is in effect until 4:00 tomorrow. additional three to 13 inches above 3000 feet. you are below pass level at this point so it will be difficult to travel. up to 20 inches for the peaks. this will become a winter storm watch as we head toward sunday. how much rain did we get? a good soaker with those thunderstorms. picking up almost two inches in campfield. 1.2 in san francisco. 6/10 from san jose to concord. over an inch at napa. a live view from our sutra tamra camera.

a london -- lovely view of francisco. cold start with warnings and advisories. freeze warnings and frost advisories. rain sunday and light snow above 2500 feet. the snow levels coming up this weekend on sunday. on our extrusive abc 7 storm impact scale, it's a light lever one. snow at low elevations. possibility of black ice and the possibility of hail. while you are sleeping, the rain and snow begins to increase across the region. toward 7:00, focused primarily in the northern part of our viewing area and then it's pretty much done. you have a good chunk of afternoon and evening with dry weather to get out and enjoy and do what you need to do. a few hundred seven inch to about a quarter of an inch for most of you through saturday afternoon. afternoon temperatures in the 40's and 50's like today. 10 to 15 degrees below average. sunday, the next band of wet weather coming in by noontime, spreading and could be some hamilton snow.
