>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. liz: now at fire burning overnight at lake berryessa. as many as 20 boats up in flames sending smoke into the air. from the wind to the snow, it has been a wild week. tracking power outages, road closures, and what we can expect. i am liz kreutz. here with lisa argen, good morning. what is going on? that was wild yesterday. lisa: we still have rain and

snow on live doppler. the main system is sinking to the south but wraparound moisture is bringing in scattered rain and snow. in santa rosa and light snow but heavier snow showers around 680 and light rain through american canyon. south to the foothills, it is snowing and around mount hamilton, you can see the white and pink. this is a level 1 system for the first half of the day. scattered showers and slippery roadways. a freeze warning and frost advisory for the highlighted areas, everywhere except san francisco. the system will begin to wind down. reciprocation evaporates towards the 10:00 hour. bundle up.

it is chilly and we have more rain to come. liz: developing overnight, a large fire broke out at a dock at lake berryessa in napa county. the dock engulfed in flames, sending up large plumes of smoke. buyer -- the fire burned a mixed of boats, houseboats, and jet skis. it broke out just after 9:00 last night and at 10:20 they stopped forward progress of the fire, but the burning portion of the dock detached and was burning on its own. >> when our crews arrived on scene, they started attacking it, some other boats, using pumps to suppress the fire. it will be a while before we get a good grasp on the number of boats that burned. liz: this happened at markley cove. no one was injured and no word on what may have caused the fire

. a popular san francisco radio dj is missing and is considered at risk. jeffrey vandergriff hosts a show every morning. the station says they are working with police and his wife. he hasn't been seen since thursday night when he was home. he is 54 years old, six feet tall, 180 pounds with tattoos on his arms and above his right ear. if you see him, call them. police are urging jewish communities around the country to be vigilant, warning neo-nazi groups may be planning a national day of hate. they are on lighting online chatter from anti-semitic groups. the anti-defamation league hosted a group saying -- the hate campaign planned for this saturday is meant to be intimidating and divide us but we will remain united and our

kindness and positivity. police in new york will be stepping up their presence. a ground stop has been lifted at los angeles international airport. the faa issued the temporary stop because of heavy thunderstorms last night, affecting flights to california, nevada, and utah. flights to lax had to be diverted to ontario. there was a flash flood warning until 2:00 a.m. power is slowly coming back on after the snow brought power lines down. you are looking at pg&e's map showing the current power outages. not too many but on the peninsula, the largest amount of people in the mountains. now of the bay area by surprise.

in the north bay, it has made things so dangerous along this stretch of highway 29 it could remain closed through the weekend. it starts at tubbs laying in napa county and goes to the lake county line. tara campbell was there and found a lot of people heading to the hills to check out the snow. tara: the sound of a not so familiar sight in napa county. >> good, play with the snow, really happy to have snow. tara: the snow covered hills seen for miles away, drawing people in. >> i want to play and enjoy this. tara: sleds coming out and the smiles too, the old and the younger flocking to higher elevations for a frolic and some fun. >> just coming to see the snow, from santa rosa. tara: a sibley -- sibling snowball fight.

bay. oakland hills and orinda got the best of it. berkeley caught heavy as well, big flakes seen falling for a while. some came together to make a snowman while others launched snowballs. it was a delightful experience, some calling it a winter wonderland. don from berkeley said it has been 20 years. >> it has been snowing more heavily than it has in 20 years. i've lived here 30 years. liz: joaquin park and oakland also saw snowfall. highway 17 is back open after being closed for hours because of snow we weather. the closures were caused by icy roads, stuck cars, and downed power lines. one power line fell down, landing across all four lanes. there were at least 14 toppled

trees. some residents were shocked at how empty the roads were. >> i've been here for 23 years and this is the first time it has been a ghost town coming up to this road. liz: a chp spokesperson recommends drivers slow down on slushy or icy roads to avoid spinouts. the snow has made dangerous conditions in the sierra. the interstate is back open after an accident backed up traffic on friday. more spinouts have led to traffic being held as crews come to clear the roadway. chains are required on 80 all the way to the state line. on highway 50, from placerville to myers. talk about the race to replace the senator dianne feinstein happening today. congresswoman barbara lee will hold her first campaign rally

since launching her run for senate. i spoke to her this week. she talked about the significance of her campaign and also said why she doesn't believe age should matter. >> to do nothing has never been an option for me. liz: east bay congresswoman arber lee is running to replace senator dianne feinstein, meeting up hours after that announcement. >> the senate needs a champion like myself who is a progressive woman, a progressive african-american woman who has fought for progressive causes all my life. liz: we has served in cop -- lee has served in congress since 1988. if she wins, she will be the only black woman currently serving in the u.s. senate. should voters factor race and gender into their decision? >> i hope voters factor in the uniqueness and the perspective of diversity, not having a black

woman with the challenges that we faced in this country, and still we rise as dr. maya angelou said. that type of fight, that type of understanding of what it means to be shut out, for not only people of color but the lgbtq+ community, the disability community, seniors, i've had many challenges and i've had to break through barriers. liz: she says she's led on issues like the hiv-aids crisis and cannabis reform, introducing the newest act in congress. it will be a tough race, democrats running against each other. when voters look at everybody, what differentiates you from adam schiff, katie porter? why should voters choose barbara lee? >> barbara lee has had a history

of fighting for progressive causes. it didn't start when donald trump was elected. liz: lee shares a story from growing up in los angeles where she fought to become her high school's first black cheerleader. >> i took them on. liz: she was the only member of congress to vote against giving the president brought authorization for military force in afghanistan after the attacks on 9/11. >> in the face of death threats, i was the only no vote. liz: she is 76 years old and would be in her 80's after serving a term. one looming question is her age. how do you respond to people who have questions about your age or think it is time for the next generation? >> i say try to keep up with me. if you look at what i've done, my energy level, my experience. i'm not ashamed of my age.

liz: a string of law a san mateo county probational officer -- probation officer sexually assaulted boys. complaints against the officer were filed in san mateo county. according to lawsuits, he threatened to increase the boy'' time in confinement if he did not comply with his demands. they claim he "unlawfully sexually abused -- abusive and harassing conduct." this happen for at least 22 years. he died in 2020 and cannot be held criminally or civilly liable. tomorrow, a bay area community will raise attack -- raise

awareness of recent attacks on street vendors as they host a cook out. amanda to castillo is because dillow is tracking this. amanda: following three on street vendors, they are mobilizing for a street vendor buyout. organizer alex. >> it is traumatic so they deserve a couple days off. they don't have paid leave or anything like that so it's part of the process amanda:. it's a process he found success in with similar support for vendor harassed by college students. video shows carlos sanchez being taunted and threatened by a man with a baseball bat. days earlier this video was captured of a vendor being brutally attacked and knocked unconscious. >> there are a lot of people,

support, even from money, people with praise wishes. amanda: they will serve visitors at the site where sanchez was attacked along bayshore highway on sunday until they sell out. >> try their food, there's going to be music. you can tip the vendors and get to know them and have a celebration. amanda: supporting two men whose tragic experiences were caught on camera and quickly went viral, the shock still settling in for many. they run a food entrepre program. >> a lot of the vendors we work with are women so this issue comes up, if they were to go out on their own, to be selling

their food and what kind of risk this has put them at. amanda: the men accused of attacking sanchez has been arrested and put out a formal apology. he hopes the same can be said for the man who assaulted him. >> the only thing i say, there's a lot of crazy people on the street. amanda: in san jose, i am amanda del castillo. liz: operation at the santa clara mass testing site will soon close as the state public health emergency is scheduled to end on tuesday. at its peak, the fairground site was testing 5000 people per day. recently, just a couple hundred tests were done on average. >> the volume of testing is something that can be handled in normal health care settings at this point. today will be the fy for vaccinations and also the final day for the county's smaller site in --

peninsula, drone view captured this picturesque view in san mateo county after snow covered the ground. zach fuentes checked out the impact, both fun and a little serious. zach: snow like this is a site we rarely get to see, so rare that locals had to improvise using boards and for the ocean. this two and a half-year-old not knowing what to make of the snow, he eventually warmed up, and it did too but leaving just enough for bay for -- bay area families to enjoy. >> to drive 12 minutes to look at snow and now we go home and have hot cocoa and enjoy the day, the best of both worlds, snow, no snow. zach: this stand first student

from michigan shocked -- stanford student from michigan shocked the snow followed him. although it has been mostly fun and games, the snow did not come without hiccups. on skyline drive in san mateo county, we found several trees and power lines down. >> it was pretty crazy. zach: caltrans urging everyone to drive safe. >> this is very rare for us in the bay area to receive such beautiful snow but we have to be mindful and safe on the roadways. pay attention to the roads and signs, and use caution. zach: crews have been working steadily to help people enjoy the rare weather. >> the crews are out doing the best they can clearing fallen trees off the roadways, and ice and snow. zach: all are taking in as much of the snow as they can while

they can. >> just look at the scenery. zach: zach fuentes, abc7news. liz: the uc berkeley central snow lab says over two feet fell yesterday and over four feet within two days. there will be more snow throughout the weekend and likely into next week. you are from buffalo. you should be teaching us how to drive. lisa: we are looking at more snow than they have back east. i have a daughter in boston and she said you have more than we do. it is unusual, but each system will bring reinforcing shots of cold air so this will stay with us, the rotation of moisture into the bay area, right into the middle of next week. let's take it day by day. southern california getting hammered. we are on the backside of the system. you can see the rain and snow

east coast -- the west coast. >> this will bring blizzard conditions to southern california. daria: blizzard warnings in the sierra nevada and california mountain ranges, the road -- major roadways closed. drivers forced to make u-turns. >> it's pretty treacherous up north, snow and ice. daria: near bakersfield, a truck ended up an embankmt. air underwater and powerful wind sent toppling onto homes. in the midwest and northeast, people are digging out power lines and cased in ice, leaving many without power. the threat of damaging wind in the heartland on sunday.

this storm will move into the northeast next week and could develop into a winter storm with heavy wind and rain. liz: santa cruz mountains are under a winter storm warning until 9:00 this morning. mountains have endured heavy rain, powerful wind, and snowfall. people spent the last couple days preparing for outages and enjoying the change in scenery. highway 17 is back open after being closed because of the snowy conditions yesterday. sky 7 has quite the view of the bay area near castro valley with snow-covered peaks in the background. los are to mount hamilton, you might think you were in the sierra. the snowcapped mount diablo is a huge attraction. it has seen snow before but nothing quite like this at the lower elevations. one local resident tells us it looked like a ski resort in the east bay.

anser: and came to lafayette wanting the snow as a backdrop for his music video. you came all the way out just for this? >> yeah, i like this view and it is perfect. especially today because it was raining and over there we see snow in the mountains, it is rare, it is amazing. anser: mount diablo was closed friday to the public. that was a huge disappointment for this group that drove all the way from san jose. >> we were excited to look at the mount diablo snow and maybe we could drive up, but we were disappointed we returned back. anser: why didn't you close -- go someplace closer? >> we thought maybe we would check it out but couldn't do both. anser: hopefully they were able to get some pictures. liz: a nonprofit in pescadero will continue with cleanup

efforts after the january storms caused severe damage to its facility. venture receipt at center has been trying to raise money and rebuild but it has -- it was lost. they will be cleaning up at its eden west road in pescadero. it says there will be food and drinks for volunteers. caltrain is suspending rail service between san francisco and mill barry -- millbrae through tomorrow. if you ride, expect delays and longer travel times. there will be a bus connecting stations. caltrans is working on testing. the project will make the rails more electric and less reliant on fossil fuels. service is set to begin in 2024. people will rally in march in the unite with -- and march i the unite with ukraine -- the movement is 360 five days strong

it's not that we snow it at this location. we are keeping our eyes out but it will be much drier today. telecom equipment maker ericsson will layoff 8500 employees worldwide. g thrding to a memfoo t compan had massive layoffs but this would be the largest to hit the telecom industry. they have a business in santa clara but have not mentioned which will be most affected. mark zuckerberg announced they are set to release a new language model to researchers to help scientists and engineers to explore uses for artificial intelligence. models like these have promised to be able to answer questions, have conversations, summarize documents, and solve math problems. california is one of a few states that doesn't require that high school students be taught computer science.

a bill in sacramento would include california among 27 states that already do. senior education reporter leanne melendez tells us the next step is to begin hiring more teachers. leanne: the name of the high school speaks for itself, galileo high school of science and technology. >> they just asked are you in ap computer science? yeah. leanne: in 2015, the school board voted to begin teaching commuter -- computer science at chool to 12 grade. salesforce has been the main supporter in stem and computer science education. >> kids are going into a world where some part is on technology or on a device. it's important for students to learn about how that works. leanne: 25% of public high schools in california do not

offer computer science courses. that's about 429,000 students. >> 27 states require that eac high school student have access to computer science. five states have computer science as a graduation requirement. leanne: they are nevada, south carolina, arkansas, tennessee, and the brassica. mbly member represti menlo parkntroduced h computer science. he such a huge shortfall in terms of employees going into these positions, californians with the skills for cybersecurity positions or coding positions. leanne: some time to make it through, he hopes to see access statewide by 2027. he says it's time for the state to start investing in training more teachers. leanne melendez, abc7news. liz: lisa, what's it like right
