it is pulling away from the bay area. rain and snow up through the north bay. you can see east of sonoma, higher elevations. highway 29 with light rain. 30 degrees on the mountains. the highways awfully slippery. and in hercules, 37, cedar point, light activity, and down around the hills, on the east bay, highway 24, certainly sleep possible. in the hills of santa clara, and hamilton, certainly some snow there. a level 1 system is winding down. scattered showers in the hills and slippery roads. mid 40's on the peninsula and low 40's and east bay. upper 30's on the north bay. as we get through the early morning hours, it's a level 1 system. may be a few peaks of sun. upper 40's to 50. thank you.

of smoke. the fire burned 10 to 20 boats. houseboats and testes. the fire broke out just before 9:00. around 10:00, officials say they stopped progress of the fire and they say the burning portion had to be detached from the water and was floating on his own. >> our crews arrived on scene and they got out on the boat to attack it from some other boats. pumps suppressed the fire. it will be a while before we can get a good grasp on the boats. >> this happened at markley cove. no one was injured and no word yet on what may have caused the fire. he hosted a show every morning. the station says they're working with police and his wife to find

them. he has not been seen since thursday night. he was at home at the time. he was 54 years old above his arms are here. let them know. national day of hate. there was online chatter from anti-semitic groups. the group posted a tweet saying the nationwide extremist day of hate campaign is planned for saturday and meant to be intimidating, but we will remain united in the kindness and positivity. police departments say they will step up presence as a safety precaution. >> a stop has been lifted at the international airport. there were heavy thunderstorms. it affected utah and arizona.

some flights had to be diverted towards the airport and on ontario. los angeles county was under a flash flood warning until 2 a.m.. >> power is slowly coming back on after the wind and snow brought trees and power lines across the bay area. you are looking at the pg and emap showing power outages. the largest amount of people right now without electricity and in the santa cruz mountains, and in the north bay. you can see they are deftly not as much color as we have seen earlier this week read a thousand people are without power as of the update from pg&e at 10 p.m.. now to the snow that took a lot of the bay area by surprise. up in the north bay it has made things dangerous along a stretch of highway toward tra -- 29. it goes all the way up towards the lake line.

snowballs at each other. it was a delightful experience for residents, and some called it a winter wonderland. and berkeley, has been 30 years since he is seen snow in the area. >> it's snowing more heavily than i've ever seen in berkeley. i've lived here for 30 years. >> other areas like grizzly peak at joaquin miller park also saw snowfall. highway 17 is back open after being closed for hours because of the snowy weather. closures on highway 17 were caused by icy roads, stock cars and downed power lines. one powerline fell down, laying across all four lanes on the roadway. there were at least 14 toppled trees as well. residents were shocked. >> i've lived here for 22 years, and this is the first time it's been a ghost town coming up to this road. >>

spoke person recommended drivers to slow down on icy roads to avoid spinouts. all the snow is made for dangerous conditions in the sierra. interstate 88 going westbound is open after a big accident backed up traffic for a while on friday. numerous spinouts at other locations have led to traffic being held at times as crews came into clear the roadway. chains are required on 80 from three miles each all the way to the state line. on highway 50, they are needed from placerville to myers. happening today, congresswoman barbara lee is going to hold her first campaign event for u.s. senate. she will replace diane feinstein. it will be held at lake merrick and oakland starting at noon. she is the third high-profile democrat and katie porter. if she wins, she will be the third black woman in the country's history to serve in the u.s. senate. she told us why that matters and how she believes she can deal with challengers and why questions about her age should not be affected.

>> to do nothing has never been an option for me. >> the east bay congresswoman says she is running to replace california's sensor -- senator dianne feinstein we ran to her hours later. >> the senate needs a champion like myself who is a progressive woman, an african american woman who has fought for progressive causes all of her life. ask she has served in congress since 1990. she chose the core issues of her campaign are the climate crisis, and public safety. she will be the only black woman serving in the u.s. senate if she wins. >> do you believe voters should be factoring in race and gender into their decisions? ask i hope people, voters especially factor in the perspective of diversity. not having the challenges that we face in this country, and still, we rise.

about sexual assault against boys for decades. the report says several complaints against the deputy probation officer were filed in san mateo county. going to the lawsuit, he threatened to increase the boys time in confinement if they did not comply with his demands. the plaintiffs claim unlawful sexually abusive and harassing contact happened for 22 years. this probation officer died in 2020 and he cannot be held criminally or civilly liable. today, bay area community will ways pets raise awareness about street vendor attacks. they hope to raise awareness about the cookout they are hosting on sunday. abc 7 has more on what to expect, we want to warn you that these videos might be hard to watch. >> following several attacks on street vendors and sample -- san jose, activists are mobilizing to bring a street vendor by out the city on sunday.

protect themselves against cold weather and go to these warming centers. they are scattered from palo alto to gilroy. for more information, head to the county's website. the cleanup effort today after the january storm caused by severe damage for a facility with the venture retreat center has been trying to rebuild and they've been trying to raise money as well to deal with what they lost. they are encouraging more volunteers to help in the process. they will be helping today and at the west road location in haskett era. there'll be food and drinks for volunteers. caltrain is suspending rail service between san francisco and millbrae. writers are encouraged not to ride on the weekend. if you do, expect delays in longer travel times. there will be a travel bus connecting the stations. they are working on construction and testing for the next three weekends. the project will make rails more

>> a beautiful shot of the building. from abc 7 camera. grab jackets. a chilly start to the morning. telecom equipment eric and eric symbol layoff 8500 employees. sent in a memo, it is an effort to cut costs. other tech companies have had massive layoffs, but this would be the largest exodus to hit the telecom industry. it could be more than a thousand layoffs. erickson does have a campus in santa clara, the company didn't disclose which location would be most affected. mark zuckerberg announced an ai expiration. they have released a language generator called llama. it is meant to help scientists and engineers explore uses for artificial intelligence such as answering questions and summarizing documents. it comes as other big companies have launched their own

platforms. they say that unlike those systems, it is not something people can talk to. rather, it is a public research tool. despite being home to the tech capital of the world, california does not require a high school student be taught science. if passed, it will include california among 2700 states that do. our senior education reporter tells us the next app is to begin hiring more teachers in that field. >> the name of this high school speaks for itself. galileo academy of science and technology. >> usually, they just asked me about computer science. >> yes. >> in 2015, they voted to teach computer science at all san francisco schools for preschool to 12th grade. they have been the main supporter in science education. >> they're going into a world where it is perfect and they're

doing it on some sort of technology advice. >> i think is important for students to learn about how that technology will work. >> 25% of high schools in california do not offer any computer science courses. that is 429,000 students a y. >> 27 states already require every high school student have access to commuter science. they are already graduation requirement. nevada, southborough,, arkansas, tennessee and nebraska. assembly member mark berman represents menlo park and has introduced a bill to ensure that every student in the state has access to computer science. >> we have such a huge shortfall in terms of employees going into these positions. people in california who have the skills we need for cybersecurity positions or coding positions. >> while this will take time to make it through sacramento, they
