fling a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. ama: the bay area today. if it was not the hail, it was probably the rain. it wasn't the rain, then you were just plain cold. dan: another round of the storms is coming back. here's a look at live doppler 7 and some of our cameras out there tonight. you see spotty rain and much more returns overnight. good evening, thank you for joining us. ama: our team is spread across the bay area tonight with the impacts and what is to come. dan: let's begin with our meteorologist tracking what is out there. sandhya: it is a wintry mix right now. it will be widespread for the morning commute aired let's get you down to street level radar. we are showing the wintry mix up to the north around st. helena, silverado trail.

wine country is getting the light stuff out there. it has been snowing on mount hamilton and is certainly cold enough. street level radar heading into warm springs boulevard around fremont as well and in the inland east bay, oakley, brett wirt, walnut all barred. you are getting the wet weather. as we pan down to the peninsula, i will show you what just passed through. he had thunderstorms firing up, and they did drop heavy rain as we widen out the picture. tonight, it is a level one under impact scale appeared tomorrow morning, it becomes a two and i will show you why. we go hour-by-hour. tomorrow morning between 5:00 and about 8:00 a.m. you will see some downpours. there is definitely going to be the potential for ponding on the roadways. here is a look at your commute travel forecast for tomorrow morning. gusty winds, high elevation snow

, thunderstorms, and hail. while it is a level two for the morning commute, the storm is not done with us. i will be back with a closer look at the timeline coming up. ama: from tricky driving to mountain slides and toppled trees, the weather is causing trouble across the bay area. jr stone is in the north bay where several trees came down near cascade falls in the town of mill valley. >> this is what it looked like after several redwood trees came crashing down in mill valley monday, just before 1:00 in the afternoon. it sounded something like this. >> it was very well -- nothing like i've ever heard. >> then spirit is a carpenter who lives here. he was home due to the rainy conditions when the trees came down. this tree fell first crashing into the others which then came down on wires. >> we heard a loud bang a loud bang, the power went out.

i saw some powerlines moving back and forth, and we came out and saw this. >> these trees fell on land in walking distance to cascade falls. one of the top rated waterfalls in the entire bay area, this is video i recorded that waterfall a couple of years ago. the treats body roadway that hikers used to travel from tenderfoot trail to those cascade falls. in this case, no one was hit and no structures were damaged. ben says he spent most of the afternoon cleaning the roadway. >> the fire department, please apartment, and dpw all came out and nobody did anything. so myself and a guy i just met who is probably in his 70's got out here, got my battery powered saws and cut up these laws and cleared the road, swept everything, pulled these lines back. >> there is no timetable on the cleanup here but mill valley please say this part of cascade drive is now closed to the public.

in mill valley, jr stone, abc7news. dan: it is still somehow just so breathtaking to see snow still on the ground in some unlikely places from livermore to saratoga, mount hamilton. others made a good old-fashioned west coast snow date taking a family trip up to mount diablo and east bay and away from school. >> we had gone up to this known a long time so this was really fun day tod i'm da driving is still a little tricky on those roads up to mount diablo so be careful. the oakland zoo will again be closed tomorrow because of the weather and the problem seeing colt keep having there. the southbay is dealing with snow and freezing temperatures of its own. with more wet weather in the forecast, our reporter has a look at how it is affecting people there. reporter: the snow-covered saratoga hills matching the snow topped mountains across the southbay.

on monday, few went in search of snow only to learn that cars were not equipped to handle those conditions. >> i thought i would see a few flakes and then i turned around, and i went up about another half mile, and it is way worse than this. reporter: weather events have put attention back on the statewide drought. california's department of water resources says mammal -- most of the reservoirs are fairly full, we are not in the clear yet. >> one wet year will not refill all of that groundwater storage has been lost. it is a similar situation for the big reservoirs in the colorado river system which the important for southern california. lake mead and powell reservoirs are so large that even one very wet winter cannot fill them up. reporter: as a downpour brings promising news to some areas, homeless advocates are highlighting how these conditions are perpetuating the struggle for the unhoused population. >> we have blankets and hiking supplies. reporter: the unhoused response

groups spent much of monday afternoon delivering hand warmers, tents, tarps, hot meals, and more those living along coyote creek in san jose. >> you can't take much more. it's just been two or three months of just solid cold, wet, or both. reporter: we met shane, and unhoused resident who stopped by to collect dinner and supplies preparing to endure another cold night. >> there's people under the bridge right there. i have shelter don't reporter:. as wind rain and snow and freezing temperatures battered at the bay area, conditions have also brought repeated loss of supplies, clothing, and shelter for many living on the street. >> the wind did this and then the flood this and another flood did that. people are really, really suffering. reporter: san jose, abc7news.

ama: a live look at the caltrans camera 80 at castle peak. it will be closed all night to the nevada state line because of white out conditions. highway 50 is closed between pollock pines and mye chain controls are in effect. getting in the mountains today has been impossible. road closures have been in place because of treacherous driving conditions. drivers have also been showing up unprepared. >> even at the check stop we have vehicles that do not have the proper tires and are getting stuck. that is why traffic is backing up even more. reporter: caltrans says need to have chains or the right tires. they have been busy all day responding to spinouts and cars stuck in the snow. ama: we can be the first to let you know about this week's weather in every neighborhood through the abc7news app here at our life updates and forecast go right to your phone. download it now and enable push

oakland. five people were killed in separate shootouts since friday night. this map shows you where the homicide happened. three happened in less than three hours on friday night. investigators do not believe the shootings are connected, and despite having extra officers on the streets. >> we had increased our patrol measures, violent crime operations team came in to give some extra coverage to the area captain. we continue to use rc's higher strategy. -- cease fire strategy. ama: police say five others were also wounded in shootings this weekend. in san francisco, a startling -- startling result revelation. there may only be three or four police officers on duty in the middle of the night according to the district supervisor. he says short staffing has impacted the areas police station tactically --

more winter weather. sandhya: hopefully you are not light sleepers because from morning, the rain will be pounding the pavement, and you will know that it is here. we are seeing showers right now and check out the sierra nevada. it is coming down. i mean, we are talking very heavy snow. this is a live view from zephyr cove. you cannot make out much because of the wind and snow creating lizard conditions. as we check out -- blizzard conditions. avalanche warning is in effect for the backcountry until 7:00 a.m. tomorrow with the heavy snow and the intensity, blizzard warnings are going for the west slopes of the sierra and tahoe until 4:00 a.m. wednesday. heavy snow will combine with gusty winds which we are seeing and you will get blowing snow and white out editions. an additional 3-60 of snow is expected, extreme he dangerous to impossible travel. right now, live doppler 7 is

showing you those scattered showers across the region. right around san jose, oakland road heading into north 1st street, 11, 880 very light to moderate rain. mount hamilton kincaid road, you are getting the snow that has been snowing most of this day today. ultimate pass, we are seeing light rain around tesla road as well. as we look to the north, this has been a wintry mix around knoxville road. we will continue to see that wintry mix here in the bay area going into tomorrow. rainfall totals last 36 hours ben lomond over two inches. half an inch in san jose. three quarters in san francisco. oakland, nearly an inch from fairfield to napa. santa rosa also. temperatures in the 30's and 40's. it is cold outside. as we look at the live view from the golden gate bridge camera, roads are slippery. temperatures today were in the

40's and 50's, a good 10-15 degrees below average. we will keep that theme going tomorrow. widespread rate -- rain for the money commute. yourself extra time if you need to be on the roads. thunder and hail and wintry mix tomorrow. dry and milder weather made to late work week. tonight the impact scale is a level one. snow over higher peaks, isolated thunder, and hail. tomorrow morning it becomes a two. rain heavy at times, snow over the hills, thunderstorms and gusty winds. this will get downgraded to a one for tomorrow afternoon. it will keep going, so we are not complete dumb with it just after the morning commute. here is a look at the timeline. 5:00 a.m. moderate pockets of rain moving in. it is widespread 8:00 a.m.. snow over mount hamilton as we continue to the afternoon, bands of showers coming through at 4:00. scattered through tomorrow night with the snow showers continuing over our peaks.

we do have rainfall additional rainfall totals that will range anywhere from one third of an inch to almost one inch in the santa cruz mountains. the winter weather advisories up until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. wintry mix down to 2000 2500 feet, but the advisory is above we thousand feet where 5-10 inches of snow is expected. you need a jacket and umbrell and hang onto both tomorrow afternoon. it will be a cool day in the 40's and windy. it is a level two tomorrow morning, thunder chance as well, wintry mix. it will be dropped to a one for the afternoon. that we get that break. frosty, cold mornings midweek. milder afternoons. level 1 for saturday afternoon, a wintry mix coming back into the picture on sunday. only for the higher peaks. monday more wet weather in the forecast. cool weather as well. after that, it looks like perhaps some warmer some --
