>> this is abc 7 news. >> avalanche concerns are from the sierra making the roads impassable. closer to home, conditions are still awfully unsettled this evening. good evening and thank you for joining us. ama: as some of the heaviest rain moves out for now, we are looking at the problems left behind. dan: we have team coverage tracking the issues on the roads and challenges for winemakers. ama: we begin with sandhya patel for the latest. sandhya: we are not done with the storm just yet. take a live look at live doppler 7 and you will see that we are still dealing with this wintry mix. we are going to get you to the radar.

dublin across 580 into livermore, we are dealing with light to moderate showers. heavier rainfall on the peninsula. right around portola road, rainfall rates about 3907 inch per hour. so be careful if you have to hit the road. it is turning to snow on mount st. helena as we expected and there is no mixing in with the showers over mount hamilton right now. this is a light level one on our exclusive impact scale. we are seeing heavy snow any sierra along with thunderstorms. tonight at 7:00 the snow and the showers will continue. they will be very scattered in nature and an isolated as we head towards late tonight. the winds have been gusting, right now 42 miles an hour at spring valley, 33 at atlas peak. we are going to see big changes heading into march. the first part of it is going to include very cold conditions. i will be back with the advisories and warnings, coming

up. dan: whiteout conditions and fears of avalanches closed ski resorts throughout the lake tahoe area today. palisades tahoe shared this video, nearly three feet of snow expected to fall today. >> this is a monumental snowfall. we have had 500 inches of snow this season. so we're looking at extending our season obviously to memorial day, but possibly even further after that. we will make an announcement a little later this month. dan: 500 inches is 41.5 feet of snow, more than 100 inches than the resort receives for the entire season on average. ama: in the south bay, road conditions are also treacherous with downed trees and snow. lauren martinez has the latest. up highway 17 towards the santa cruz mountains.

it did not take long to see snow on the side of the road. we spent most of our time waiting around downed trees near san lorenzo park. giannini crews were busy clearing the roadways for drivers. >> you can see a lot of trees. it is crazy. lauren: residents said they are having to drive around several closures from storm damage. >> coming from san jose and i had to take alternate routes because of road closures. it has taken me about 45 minutes longer than usual. lauren: at this gas station, workers said they have been belly -- been busy. >> lots of generators, extra battery powers and lights. it is going to be inevitable to lose power. just keeping prepared. lauren: while some do not mind the active winter season, others do. >> oh yeah, but it is like one thing or another. we either have no rain or a lot of rain. lauren: flooding is a concern

for this area. up until 4:00 there was an advisory in place for small streams. lauren martinez, abc 7 news. dan: in the east bay most of the snow that fell yesterday has now melted. but that coupled with the howling winds and heavy rain today has been challenging for great rowers in the livermore valley. we spent the day with a one maker to get a sense of what they are dealing with. reporter: wondered how are they dealing with all the conditions, the rain, the wicked wind, buckets of rain, and the cold, frosty temperatures. we came here tim mcgraw vineyards, walked among the vines, and got answers to our questions. >> as crazy as it has bee i have been in this business over 40 years and i have not seen -- i don't anything quite like this.

leslie: a walk in this vineyard in the hills of livermore one country is eye-opening. snow on the mountains, mud on, still dormant -- and not much to be done right now in this cycle. >> the underground aquifers refilled which is critical for us long-term. so, in a weird way it is very inconvenient. we cannot get in the vineyard to do any work. it is too muddy, the tractors are getting stuck. leslie: this winemaker is worried about vineyards in flatter areas like south of san jose or east into lodi. deep puddles that sit for too long can cause root rot. everywhere, 2023 is turning into a real wild card of a wine year so far. growers are delaying pruning to privet cross damage and hoping continued cold and rainy weather

supervisors are expected to vote on a resolution urging the governor and state lawmakers to legalize prostitution in the state. if that happens it paves the way for san francisco to legalize it. earlier this month, a supervisor introduced the resolution, the idea gained momentum as city leaders try to deal with sex workers in the mission district. dan: the city of san francisco has passed nearly $3 million in funds to renovate one of the hotels used to house the homeless during the pandemic. the on limb has more. reporter: as san francisco ends it state of emergency tuesday, the hotel industry is bracing to welcome back tourists and guests. according to the city's hotel counsel, occupancy went from a pre-knock i of 80% to a low of eight. the 2022 60% occupancy. the san francisco board of supervisors unanimously passed a $2.9 million settlement for the tilden hotel.

it comes after a lawsuit by the hotel's parent company alleging property damage caused by sheltered guests. i spoke to an employee who didn't want to go on camera pacetti homeless guests created a mess, destroyed walls, flooring, and even televisions. in 2022, our i of the hotels used to house about 4000 unhoused. >> it is a great place. i am off the streets. it is great. reporter: he also spoke to those who enjoyed their new temporary housing. when we stopped by, which advertises itself as the best hotel in san francisco, to learn more about how funds would be used, it was closed. calls to their pr company were also unanswered. dion lim, abc 7 news. ama: dueling rallies took place at it were alameda county' edition moratoriums. we were in oakland as those who want the ban to end gather to

urge the board of supervisors to take action. they say the moratorium has hurt more landlords because they have been unable to collect rent for nearly three years. later in the same location a group supporting keeping the ban in place held its own rally. they want the board to provide protection for tens of thousands of tenants. at last check, the board was still meeting and no action had been taken. dan: interstate 980 could become history according to a report by our media partners at the east bay times. hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal funding will allow caltrans to study whether knocking down that freeway would help reconnect neighborhoods in west oakland. i 980 is about two miles long but was not finished until the mid-1980's. it serves as a link between interstate 580, highway 24, and interstate 880. ama: the first candidate vine for barbara lee's seat has thrown her hat in the ring. dan: controversy in san francisco over the same friends -- over the century city policy.

ama: a second suspect has been arrested related to an attack in the mission district earlier this month. sfpd arrested a second teenaged girl over the weekend on 24th and mission street's. police say the two suspects attacked adults with electric scooters and beat them on february 12. one victim was taken to the hospital with fractures. the first suspect was found three days later in alameda county's custody for an unrelated incident. both girls were taken to the sf juvenile justice center and faced multiple felony charges. ama: san francisco supervisors are expected to vote today on a resolution upholding the city's sanctuary policies. dan:

of the resolution at the city hall. the supervisor -- to protections for undocumented immigrants convicted of dealing fentanyl. >> it is cynical. it won't help the problem. and it punishes people that are already victims of an unjust system. dan: supervisor matt dorsey and district attorney brooke jenkins want to end century sanctuary protections. sanctuar authorities from notifying immigration if an undocumented person is released from custody. ama: the barbara director announced her bid to run for congress today. her announcement highlighted her years of activism in social justice before taking on the bart role. it means simon could replace barbara lee who is running for u.s. senate.

the announcement comes three days after lee's rally to kickstarter campaign. lee is running to replace senator dianne feinstein who is retiring at the end of her term. dan: california's former labor secretary is president biden's choice for the same job in his administration. president biden plans to nominate judy sue for that post, replacing marty walsh who is stepping down next month. she is a stanford graduate and served as deputy labor secretary since 2021. she served as california's labor secretary from 2019 to 2021. if confirmed, she would be the first asian-american to serve in a secretary level role in biden's cabinet. ama: storms slam los angeles like the city seen in decades. more on the damage and record-breaking

bringing rain and snow to the bay area is bringing cold temperatures to southern california. los angeles is on track to see his longest gold street in 35 years. mudslides are also a major problem. check out this home west of beverly hills. the hillside low gave way overnight after several days of drenching rain. two people were evacuated as a precaution. they don't know when they will be able to return home. in the meantime in south l.a., rain caused the roof to collapse at a universal community health center specializing in health care for the uninsured. debris hit the mainspring clear pipe, which caused more water to gush into the clinic. about six inches in one hour. the ceo says there is almost half $1 million in damage. >> the biggest problem we ha is all of our medical equipment we used to see patients was damaged. all of the beds are stuck in a position. we have equipment that we cannot use right now because it got wet. dan: it is a real mess and a

problem. the health center opened in november of 2022 and was just getting his dental department up and running. now the staff is trying to figure out how it can see patients. ama: back in the bay area, crews were at work this afternoon trying to clear a mudslide that blocked paradise drive. it closed the road to through traffic. paradise drive is a major route that runs along nearly the entire eastern part of the city. dan: potholes are also a big problem in oakland. today mayor shank tao announced the city's annual potholed let's. it will start as soon as the rain stops and the streets dry out. assuming there are no pickups the blissed will last through the beginning of may. and i hope that is enough time. if they get finished early hopefully they can go elsewhere in the bay area. ama: let's find out how quickly the rain is ending. sandhya: just a few more hours. threw two night and early tomorrow morning you will be out of here. let me show you live doppler 7

right now. we are still dealing with an unsettled pattern. as we get you closer to where we are seeing that wintry mix, it is up to the north around lakeport, kelsey bill, cobb mountain, geysers road. it is switching from rain to snow. as we head down towards the east bay, castor valley, hayward, 580, it is going to be a slippery commute. moderate rain falling on the peninsula from mountain view to palo alto, middlefield road. watch out. over the summit we are seeing that wintry mix. temperatures in the 40's and the 50's. here is a live look from red peak where it is nice to see the snow on the ground right now. some's notable -- some snow totals up to three feet over some higher terrain in the sierra nevada. the resorts are getting a lot of snow and right now parts of the roads are closed, parts requiring chains. blizzard warning until 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. gusty winds, additional one to

four feet of snow. i would hold off on travel. it is extremely impossible to get up there. the clouds are stacked up in the city. showers and snow tonight, a cold morning with prospered sunny and mild are the next three afternoons in the neck storm arrives this weekend. on our scale tonight it is a level one. scattered showers, gusty winds, snow over higher peaks and still looking at a thunder and hail chance but it is slight and that chance is diminishing into the night. hour by hour the winds, 25 to 30 miles an hour at sick sick lot. still breezy along the coast tomorrow morning. the winds pick up tomorrow afternoon. so be prepared, it will be a gusty day, even though temperatures are going to come up. as we look at the timeline, 7:00 tonight you're looking at snow showers to the north. across parts of the east, in the south bay and san francisco, scattered showers. this trend can use -- continues into the latter part of the

evening, before this isolated is all beget around 1:00 and it will be limited before it winds down. and you get sunshine wednesday. how does that sound? rainfall estimates, an additiona l 0 to .18 inches. it's just very scattered. winter until 10:00 tonight for the north bay mountains. for the east bay hills and parts of the eastern santa clara hills until 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. total snow, five to 10 inches when you count the entire storm. the wintry mix possibly down to 2225 feet. 1:00 to 8:00 a.m. tomorrow we are expecting most of the bay area, other than the coast and san francisco, to go under either a freeze warning or frost advisory. upper 20's for low 30's for the warning, advisory mid 30's. protect your pets, plants, pipes. and of course the cold will be dangerous to those were

unsheltered and those without power. that is something to keep in mind if you have neighbors you need to check on. temperatures in the morning in the mid 20's. below freezing santa rosa, napa, livermore. it will be cold tomorrow morning with those 20's and 30's. tomorrow afternoon we brighten it up, but it will be windy. 40's and 50's for your highs. the accuweather 7-day forecast, a chilly morning with frost. we do it all over again thursday, but the afternoon highs are coming up into the low 60's inland, low 50's on the coast, even milder on friday before we bring in another system over the weekend. that does not look like heavy rain and snow but it certainly will be a wintry mix for sunday and monday with lingering showers on tuesday. so we're are on a roll here. dan: today is national rare disease day. to raise awareness about rare diseases and improve access to treatment. we are introducing you to a
