ama: turns into a painful afternoon vigil. >> i did not expect to have my daughter go through this. how is she going to get through this? dan: one highschooler stabbed and killed allegedly by another student. classmates, family, and police all processing what happened today in class. thank you for joining us. ama: a and attempted homicide charges today. he is accused of killing a 16-year-old and harming another. dan: j.r. stone is there with the emotions of those gathered on campus. julian: a busy wednesday evening outside of montgomery high school. you can see a memorial has been set up to remember the teen who was killed. 16-year-old jayden pienta's

memory will live on in pictures like this after he was stabbed to death in a classroom on wednesday. >> he was stabbed in the heart three times. j.r.: family members telling us that after talking with students inside the classroom. >> he was kindhearted, sweet, loving, gentle. he not have harmed anybody. j.r.: santa rosa police describing what happened leading up to the stabbing at montgomery high school. >> two students entered a classroom. they were not students in this particular classroom. j.r.: police say there was a fight between those two and a freshman student who was in the art class. the teacher broke it up and then more fighting. >> moments later the fight continued and at that point, the student inside the classroom produced the knife. j.r.: both students who came into the classroom were stabbed.

jayden fatally and another receiving a stab wound to the hand. when asked why they went to the classroom, this was the response. >> we don't know that. we do not know. >> us what happened. j.r.: police tell us there have been recent run ins with jayden and the student who was arrested. students continued to show up to this makeshift vigil on the plot -- on the flagpole. >> i did not expect my daughter to get through this. how is she going to get through this? how do you let her bury her baby? i don't understand. j.r.: so many students came out on wednesday night to remember jayden.

classes at montgomery high school have been canceled for thursday and friday. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. dan: those students on the community will no doubt have a difficult next few days and weeks. there is help when it comes to issues like this. we have a page of useful resources for matters of bullying, harassment, or mental health. it is available on abc7news.com. ama: new developments in the search for popular bay area radio host jeffrey vendor breath. this was released through his instagram page. his wife thanked everyone who helped support find her husband. recent information to believe that he will not be coming back. the instagram post states he is still considered missing by san francisco police and they do not suspect foul play. dan: happening now, the cold is creeping back in.

here is a live look out from our east bay hills camera. temperatures will be plummeting overnight and certainly for the morning commute. let's go to meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya: it is going to be subfreezing for parts of the bay area, so just a gentle reminder it is still winter. temperatures right now in the 30's and 40's. it is chilly outside but compared to 24 hours ago, numbers are running higher. two reasons for it. the wind still going over the hills, and we have higher clouds up above. tomorrow morning, most of the bay area under a frost advisory from midnight until 9:00 a.m. for the morning, 28 to 32 degrees. the advisory, 33 to 36 degrees. as we go hour-by-hour tomorrow by 6:00, already falling below freezing from santa rosa. 35 in livermore. this is a look at the sampling of low temperatures compared to

records. 28 in santa rosa, two degrees from the old record. oakland will be well above the record, san jose coming in at 37. we had two records tied today. san francisco and oakland. san francisco, 39 west set back in 1896, but the fly in the ointment, those gusty winds. 45 miles per hour in mount diablo. dan: big select. you tonight, governor newsom is declaring a state of emergency in 13 counties because of the winter storm including sonoma county pit that will mobilize the national guard to hard-hit areas like the san bernardino mountains. people are trapped because of the snow. the sheriff's office is using a snow cat to get to people stuck in the mountains and need help. san bernardino county declared a state of emergency after getting hammered again last night.

it is estimated four to five feet of snow held in -- fells and higher elevations, preventing people from leaving their houses. ama: days of snow on mount hamilton have made for dangerous driving and constant shoveling. the astronomers that live up at the observatory had to hunker down. >> this is complicated by the fact we had lost power from pg&e. ama: the road leading up there is still closed to visitors. amanda del castillo checked in with astronomers on site to learn how the snow was impacting them. >> there is only one way in and one way out. amanda: this resident astronomer at the observatory describing the snow-covered drive up and down mount hamilton. the road remains closed to visitors and manned by law enforcement. the doctor is one of the 30 staffers who live on-site. since the 22nd, he says the official account is the cumulative amount of 39 inches of snow. >> the previous two years, has

been barely a drop of precipitation on mount hamilton, so this is almost a return to normal. the unusual thing about this winter so far in the recent snowstorms is that it has all been in a short contained space of time. amanda: certainly making travel treasuries. the observatory recently cost power and is running on a generator. the efforts to replenish diesel supplies will be in the next few days pay it >> it will be extraordinarily dangerous on the roads. those of us that live here on the mountain are used to the more dangerous driving conditions because we experience them every year. amanda: resident astronomer eleanor gates says because she and others are living in such a remote location, the community is prepared for such scenarios. gaetz sharing these for use

at ski resorts, avalanches are a problem. over the night. >> we needed to shelter in place or evacuate, the danger from the avalanche that had occurred. the condo next door had their windows blown out, debris across the parking lot about 30 feet. dan: the good news, no one was hurt in the avalanche. ama: in the south bay, police arrested a person after raiding a san jose home for explosives. a bomb squad was seen outside the home this afternoon. a block away from gunderson high school. officers and a hazmat team arrived during the time school was letting out. there will be staying at the scene for the next 24 to 48 hours. dan: two bay area men are headed to prison for plotting a bomb at the democratic headquarters.

ian rogers has agreement and jarrod copeland has received a three year sentence. the pair wanted to target not only the headquarters in sacramento but the governor's mansion and buildings belonging to facebook and twitter. what was the motive? the two felt de stolen the presidential election from donald trump. ama: vice president kamala harris will be back in the bay area this week. she will be part of a talk with small business owners in san francisco on friday, highlighting the biden team's work to help business owners. dan: on the other side of the political spectrum, ron desantis will be in california this weekend. he will speak at the reagan presidential library in simi valley. desantis will then later hold a fundraiser in orange county. in early berkeley igs poll shows desantis leading among

several embryos and get them tested to understand which ones have the genes so they can move forward with the ones that do not. after meeting with doctors at huntington reproductive sector -- center, they were sold. jason and melissa went to this one in pasadena. the embryos were created in 2020 and the couple now has a 1.5-year-old son. but last summer, jason and melissa were looking into having another child and that is when they learned the embryo they used the first time did have the gene. >> we would have never known. we would have never found out and we would have just had one baby. we would have went his whole life not knowing until we found out he had stomach cancer. reporter: finding out now changed everything. >> there is a likelihood in his lifetime he will develop stomach cancer. a total gastrectomy is what they are recommending based off of our history. reporter: the lawsuit alleges

that the center concealed information about their previous mistakes and ability to catch mistakes. several allegations of negligence and battery are in process. >> they promised jason and melissa that it was not going to transfer an embryo that had the stomach cancer gene. that everybody was clear about that, and that is why there embryos through genetic testing. >> how did they promise this? >> this was promised in numerous writings including various emails in addition to conversations that were explicit. reporter: hr seats as part of the issue is genetic testing. they sent a statement that says we deeply emphasize with -- empathize with the case. with an outside party, they thought consulting. hrc suggested that company sent accurate results,

and do skiing or boarding, the next few days are the days to go. we have heavy snow, windy conditions coming in to the mountains sunday and saturday. temperatures will drop in the afternoon. here is a look at how much snow dropped in. the last. 72 hours. we are talking five to seven feet of snow. palisades tahoe at snow. statewide this year, the snowpack is now 189% of average. let's hope the cold storms keep bringing more snow, and that means we will get part of our water supply out of their, which we rely on, so we want to see more snow up there. we certainly got a lot of rain. three inches in canfield, an inch in san francisco. over an inch in concord. that puts everybody above average.
