reggie: an students at a bay area high school turns deadly. school is not in session this morning as classmates, family and police all process what sparked this violent confrontation. kumasi: new developments on the search for a missing bay area radio host. the update we are learning from a post i the wife of the host. reggie: a brief break from the winter weather with the exception of the communities at higher elevations. some nearly cut off as snow continues to fall. >> respect the signage not to come up to the mountain because emergency vehicles need that access. reggie: a look at what the forecast has in store for the weekend. kumasi: good morning everyone. reggie: let's start with a check

of the forecast. francis: temperatures right now. you will notice lots of 30's in the north bay, santa rosa at ready five and even in the east bay. temperatures will be coming down over the next couple of hours and that is why there is a frost advisory and freeze warning in effect. the freeze warning in areas in purple. parts of mount hamilton. that is where the temperatures may drop down 23 degrees. the frost advisory is mainly along the coast and around the bay, temperatures coming down to 33 and 36 degrees. here is a look outside from the east bay hills. this afternoon it will be bright and brisk and with some sunshine, we will be warming up to the mid and upper 50's and even low 60's around the bay. jobina:

morning in the search for a popular bay area radio host. his wife released a statement last night through the official instagram page. she thanked everyone for their support in trying to find her husband. she goes on to say the family has recently discovered information quote, leading us to believe he will not be coming back. she did not reveal details about the information they discovered. he disappeared from his san francisco home six days ago. the instagram post says he is still considered missing by the san francisco police and they do not suspect foul play. reggie: developing news in the north bay, class is canceled for the rest of the week at montgomery high school in santa rosa after a deadly stabbing on campus. one student was killed, another is recovering. a 15-year-old boy is facing charges. lena howland joins us live fro the campus this morning. lena: good morning.

we are on our way to montgomery high school in santa rosa, picking our way up 101 northbound where a growing memorial is sitting outside that high school right now as the community works to process what happened in the middle of the school day yesterday morning. police tell us that two juniors entered another classroom and started fighting, unprovoked with a freshman sitting in that class. despite the teacher trying to break it up, they continued to fight and the freshman broke out a knife, stabbing both a knife, stabbing both 16-year-old students. critically injuring one with stab wounds to the handanother d by family hospital. other family members say there had been recent run-ins and the student accused of this, and they say jaden isn't here to give us the full story. his grandmother spoke with us in

tears at the school last night. >> he was stabbed in the heart three times. he was kindhearted loving, gentle. >> he is a big boy. but he wouldn't have harmed anyone. lena: the freshman believed to be involved in this fight was later found hiding in a creek bed and taken into custody. he is now facing three felony charges of homicide, attempted homicide and a weapon on school campus, and one count of misdemeanor battery. as a reminder, all school today and tomorrow has been canceled at montgomery high school while this community works to process what happened. reggie: community will no doubt have a tough next several days and beyond. there is help when it comes to

issues like this. we have a page of useful resources for matters of olein, harassment and mental health. -- of bullying, harassment and mental health. jobina: a state of emergency has been declared in 13 counties because of the recent storm. that will mobilize national guard members to hard-hit areas like the san bernardino mountains. people there are trapped because of all the snow. the sheriff's office is using a snow cat to get the residents who are stuck in the mountains out and get them help. they have performed nearly 100 rescues so far. san bernardino county declared a state of emergency after tuesday night's storm. it is estimated four to five feet of snow fell on the higher elevations. reggie: back in the bay area, days of snow have made for dangerous driving and constant shoveling. astronomers who live up at the lake observatory are being told to hunker down. >> this has been complicated by

the fact that we lost power from pg&e. reggie: the road leading up there is closed toisitors. leo -- amanda castelli a check in. >> right now there is only one way in and one way out. amanda: a resident astronomer described the snow-covered drive up and down the mountain. sky 7 highlighting why the road remains closed to visitors. he is one of about 30 staffers who live on site. since the 22nd, he says the official count is a cumulative amount of 39 inches of snow. >> the previous two years, there has been barely a drop of precipitation. this is almost a return to normal. the unusual thing about this winter so far and this february is that it has been a lot in a very short contained space of time. amanda: certainly

treacherous. the observatory recently lost power and is running on a diesel generator. any effort to replenish diesel supplies will come in the next few days. >> once it gets dark, it will freeze and black ice will be extraordinarily dangerous. those of us who live on mount hamilton are used to the more dangerous driving conditions because we experience them every year. amanda: a resident astronomer says because she and others are living in such a remote location, the community is prepared for such scenarios and has stocked pantries. sharing these photos with us. >> snowfall this heavy is super rare and i wanted to have my own memories of how beautiful it is, to offset my painful memories of how sore i am from all the shoveling. amanda: resident staffers have been working to clear roads. despite the conditions, both a sure none of the staff are stranded, though from a distance

they have note -- they have witnessed people attempting to ascend mount hamilton road. >> we would appeal to people to respect the signage not to come up the mountain, because not only supplies but emergency vehicles need that access in case people find themselves in difficulty. jobina: this 80 is back open after being closed for days due to the snow. big rigs are not allowed between applegate and the state line. although the highways are clear, there are massive piles of snow. truckee is buried. the ski resorts, avalanches are a problem right now. one barreled into a complex. >> the sheriff's office banged on the door and we woke up and they indicated we needed to shelter-in-place or evacuate due to the damage from an avalanche. the condo next door to ours had the windows blown out. there was a trashcan that had been tossed about the parking

lot. jobina: thankfully no one was hurt in the avalanche. frances: if you are heading to tahoe today and tomorrow, it is a good time to drive because there is a winter storm watch for the sierra that starts at 10:00 on saturday. they are expecting one to five eight of snow above 2000 feet. it is going to be very heavy snow and snow levels almost down to 1000 feet will affect areas like auburn. upou its ingodaerto impolehere clear start to the morning with a live shot. san francisco is currently 44, san jose, 42 and it is chilly in palo alto. it is also a bit breezy in the hills right now as we look live from the east bay. temperatures dropping to the 30's. santa rosa down to 32 right now.

is slashing the price of insulin by 70% and capping patient cost at $35 per month. as faith abubey reports, other than joe biden says it is just a matter of time before other companies do the same. faith: this morning, president biden taking a victory lap after the largest manufacturer of insulin in the u.s. announced that diabetics who use its insulin should now expect to pay no more than $35 a month for the life-saving medication. >> we finally beat big pharma because we stuck together. faith: president biden praising the move by drugmaker eli lilly, highlighting the fact that last year he signed into law the inflation reduction act, which caps insulin prices for seniors on medicare at $35, calling on pharmaceutical companies to also lower prices for everyone else. the president suggesting eli lilly's decision could be a game changer. >> $35. guess what that means?

every other company making insulin will have to lower their prices to $35 because they can't compete. faith: out of the nearly eight and a half million americans who use insulin, nearly 3 million rely on eli lilly products. as prices for the medication have skyrocketed, many diabetics have been forced to make injury's to save money. >> we would be able to successfully do what one fourth of all type one diabetics do which is ration insulin until payday. faith: kaiser family foundation found a slight majority of americans want congress to put capping insulin costs on its list of top priorities. >> we are doing this completely voluntarily because it is time and it is the right thing to do. faith: president biden as recently as this week called out republicans for blocking his proposal to extend a $35 insulin cap to everyone. this could potentially become a

campaign issue if the president decides to join the 2024 presidential race. reggie: h francisco leaders are heading to new york city to see what they can learn from the nation's first safe consumption site. these are places where people can use drugs under supervision in case of an overdose. the nonprofit onpoint operates the site in new york and more than a year and half of operation, they say staff reversed over 700 overdoses and connected more than 2200 people to treatment. this week's trip will include more than a dozen san francisco leaders, including the police chief. >> more advocates we can have, that our leaders in the department, that have to deal day in and day out with this crisis on the street, the more likely i think we will look at the support of the mayor and the city attorney to be brave and move forward and open these centers. reggie: safe consumption sites are illegal under federal law but some believe the so-called

image because we have clear skies over many parts of the bay area, and that means we are going to lose a lot of heat overnight. temperatures are dropping into the 30's. ukiah already down to degrees. half moon bay, 37. because of the chilly temperatures, there is a freeze warning in purple for some of the east and south bay hills and also a frost advisory along the coast and along the bay. temperatures could drop down to 38 degrees and for the frost advisory, 33 degrees. today's highs will be nice and mild because with the sunshine, temperatures will warm up to near 60 degrees in some spots. generally we will see the 50's for most everyone. the wind will pick up, so bundle up and you will need the jacket because of the brisk conditions, especially at the beaches. oakland, 58.

lena howland is live at mcmurray high school with what the family of one of the victims is saying. lena: good morning. we are live at montgomery high school where you can see a small memorial now sits in front of the school in honor of that 16-year-old student that was stabbed and killed inside of the classroom yesterday morning. you can see flowers and balloons over on my right hand shoulder that were left behind by community members and other students here last night. the family has identified the student killed as 16-year-old -- police say he entered an art class that was not his with another jr. at the school and started fighting with a freshman sitting in that class. despite a treat -- a teacher trying to break it up, they continued to fight and that is when they say the freshman broke out a knife, stabbing both students, seriously injuring

san francisco home last week. police say the popular cohost was considered at risk after posting a message that started by saying, thank you for a wonderful life filled with joy, laughs, pain and struggle. since then, there has been no comedic case and from him. instagram post says he is still considered missing by san francisco police and that they do not suspect foul play. vandergrift had openly talked about being diagnosed with a severe case of lyme disease that often gave him brain fog. reggie: so sorry to hear this. an investigation is happening right now on the south bay after explosives were found a home in san jose. video shows police vehicles parked at the home overnight. officers and a arrived yesterday afternoon, just as school was letting out. police say a lot of evidence was recovered. they will stay at that scene for

the next 48 hours. two bay area men are heading to prison for planning to bomb the california democratic party headquarters. ian rogers received a nine year sentence as part of a full -- as part of a plea agreement and the other received a three year sentence. prosecutors say they wanted to target not only the headquarters in sacramento but also the governor's mansion and buildings belonging to facebook and twitter. investigators say the motive was the false narrative that the 2020 election was stolen from donald trump. jobina: we are learning more about a scary situation at a pennsylvania airport. a suspect is in fbi custody after authorities checked luggage with hidden explosives. investigators are trying to figure out why he had those explosives and if he planned on setting them off. questioning this passenger who they say tried to smuggle an explosive device onto a plane. here he is on surveillance, lugging two suitcases authorities say contain

dangerous explosive material. the 40-year-old, a pennsylvania native, was set to take a flight from pennsylvania to orlando, florida on monday. during a security screening, and alarm went off. tsa officers opened the suitcase and found a circular compound approximately three inches in diameter wrapped in a wax like paper and clear plastic wrap hidden in the lining of the baggage. an x-ray showed the device contained a granular type of powder consistent with commercial grade fireworks. they also say it had multiple fuses attached, one designed to ignite quickly. the suitcase also containing a can of butane, a lighter, a pipe with white powder residue, a wireless drill and two electrical outlets take together with black tape. he is charged with possession of an explosive in an airport and possessing or attempting to place an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft.

according to a criminal complaint, he was paged over the pa system and instead of reporting to authorities, security cameras caught him leaving the airport. he was later arrested at his home in pennsylvania. sources say the device to contain flammable and explosive materials but was not operational and was not built to go off in flight. robert f kennedy will remain in prison. the california parole board denied parole yesterday. they said the 78-year-old prisoner still lacks insight into what caused him to kill kennedy in 1968. this is a turnaround from 2021 when the board recommended parole but governor newsom rejected that decision. his attorney says she believes the board was influenced by newsom and kennedy's family. reggie: new satellite images show southern california both before and after recent storms brought several feet of snow to the area.

nasa shared these photos, the first from february 10 and the second shows snow covering parts of l.a. county on february 26. some parts saw six and a half feet of snow. governor newsom has activated the national guard, declaring an emergency in 13 counties. yosemite is closed after getting 15 feet of snow. emergency crews are scrambling to get food and medicine to mountain communities east of l.a.. nearly 100 rescues have been reported in san bernardino county. it could take more than a week to reach some areas. meanwhile the storm we just saw is heading east. millions of people will have major impacts tomorrow, people in alabama describing tornado sirens and booming thunder throughout the night. there have also been tornado warnings for some cities. jobina: -- after shutting down for hours yesterday due to the slick conditions the snow left. traffic was backed up for hours as truckers and other drivers
