thursday, march 2. jobina: we are going to check in with frances dinglasan on this very cold morning. >> there's a freeze warning in effect until 9:00 this morning. you can see the skies are mainly clear going to allow temperatures to cool. this afternoon the winds will pick up. it will be bright and brisk. it will be a milder afternoon with temperatures warming up to near 60 for inland areas around the bay. at the beaches, low 50's. tonight clouds move in, chilly once again. hopefully not as cold. you will need the jacket this afternoon with those brisk winds. jobina: a popular bay host is presumed dead. his wife released a statement last night through while 94 official instagram page.

she thanked everyone for trying to find her husband and support their family. she goes on to say the family recently discovered information "leaving us to leave -- leading us to believe jv will not be coming back." he disappeared from their home six days ago. the instagram page says he is still considered missing by the san francisco police department and they do not suspect foul play. reggie: classes are canceled at mug armory high school in santa rosa today and tomorrow. yesterday a student stabbed two other students in classroom and one of them died. abc news reporter lena howland live what we learned about that attack. lena: a growing memorial sits outside of montgomery high school just underneath the flagpole as this community works to process exactly what happened here inside of a classroom yesterday morning. police tell us two juniors entered another classroom and started fighting with a freshman

sitting inside of that class, despite a teacher trying to break it up. they continued to fight. a freshman broke out a knife, stabbing both 16 euros students. critically injuring one student with stab wounds to the hand and another later identified as 60-year-old jaden pinto who died at the hospital. family members say they had been -- there had been recent run-ins with the student and jaden. they say jaden is in here to give us the full story. grandmother talked with us in tears at the school last night. >> he was stabbed in the heart three times. >> he was a good boy, kindhearted, sweet, loving, gentle. he is a big boy. he wouldn't have harmed anybody. lena: the freshman believed to be involved in this fight, a 15-year-old boy it was later found hiding in creek bed and taken into custody. he is now facing three felony

mountains who need help. so far they have performed nearly 100 rescues. it is feet of snow fell in the higher elevations, making roads treacherous and preventing people from leaving their homes. reggie: in the bay area days of snow and mount hamilton have made for days of constant shoveling. folks are being told to hunker down. >> we lost power from pg&e. reggie: they have seen 39 inches of snow so far. the observatory has been running on a diesel generator and the road leading up there is still closed to visitors. >> once it gets dark it will freeze and it will be black ice and be extraordinarily dangerous on the roads. be super careful. those of us who live in mount hamilton are used to the more dangerous driving conditions because we experience them every year. reggie:

working to clear roads to make it easier for astronomers to get to the observatory. jobina: interstate 80 is finally back open after being closed for several days due to snow in the area. traffic moving in both directions but big rigs are not allowed between applegate and the state line. although the highways are clear, there are massive piles of snow wherever you look. truckee is buried. at the ski resorts, avalanches are a problem right now. one barreled into a complex at olympic valley. >> we woke up and went to the door and they indicated we needed to shelter-in-place or evacuate because of an avalanche that just occurred. the condo next to us had the windows blown out. trash cans had been blown across -- had been tossed across the parking lot 30 feet. jobina: no one was hurt in the avalanche. reggie: san francisco to dismiss manslaughter charges against a former police officer involved in a deadly shooting. in 2017, officer krista moya fired his gun through a window

patrol car killing a 42-year-old carjacking suspect. former da initially charged with homicide. it was the first time a san francisco police officer had ever been charged with homicide. jenkins says the facts and the law doesn't support prosecution and claims he only filed charges for political gain. a judge gave the state attorney general office until march 7 to decide to file charges. at a rally yesterday, o'neill's aunt demand answers and said police officers must be held accountable. >> this man walks away, it won't matter what video you have, pictures, witnesses. they will do it in broad daylight and put it on their social media and laugh themselves. reggie: o'neill's family settled a civil lawsuit against the city for $2.5 million f.

they left for good. happening today, san francisco leaders heading to new york city to see what they can learn from the nations first save consumption site for injections. those are places where people can go to use drugs under supervision in case of an overdose. the nonprofit, on point, operates the site in new york. more than a year and a half in operation, on point says staff reversed more than 400 overdoses and connected more than 200 people to treatment. this week's trip will include more than a dozen san francisco leaders. >> the more advocates we can have that are leaders in the department that have to deal day in and day out with this crisis on the street, the more likely i think we will get the support of the mayor and the city attorney to be brave and to move forward and open these centers. jobina: save consumption sites are not illegal under federal law, but some believe the new

gunderson high school. officers in hazmat seen arriving there yesterday afternoon just at school was letting out. police say a lot of evidence was recovered. they will be staying at the scene for the next 24 to 48 hours. two bay area men are heading to prison after plotting to bomb the california they headquarters. jerk copeland of received a three-year sentence. prosecutors say the pair wanted to target not only the headquarters in sacramento but the governor's mansion and buildings belonging to facebook and twitter. investigators say the motive was the false narrative that the 2020 election was stolen from donald trump. jobina: the man accused of hiding explosives inside his luggage at a pennsylvania airport will appear in court today. investigators say they found a circular compound about three inches in diameter whack -- diameter wrapped in waxed paper. they also recovered other items including a can of butane, a

lighter and a pipe with white powder residue. >> every place where this gentleman could have gotten caught at the airport, in the airport process seems to have stood up and worked as intended, which is a good sign. jobina: the 44-year-old was able to board his flight. he was paced over the airports pa system. that is wh surveillance cameras captured him leaving the airport. he was later arrested at his home. sources tell abc news the device was not operational. it was not made to go off in flight. reggie: new satellite images show southern california before and after recent storms brought all that snow. nasa shared these photos, the first from february 10 and the second that shows snow covering parts of l.a. county on parts -- on february 26. some parts of the area saw six and a half feet of snow. governor newsom's action of the national guard declaring a national emergency in 13 counties. yosemite is still closed after

getting 13 feet of snow. emergency crews are scrambling to get food and medical to people. officials say it could reach more than a week -- it could take more than a week to reach some areas. the snow is heading east. millions of people have major impact for tomorrow. people in alabama are describing tornado sirens and booming thunder blaring throughout the night. there have also been tornado warning's some cities there. jobina: grapevine in southern california open after shutting down for several hours yesterday due to cyclic and -- do to slick conditions because of snow. traffic backed up for hours after big rigs waited. they tried to find another route but found it slow going. others had to sit and wait because they weren't prepared for the conditions. >> snowing and the freezing rain. it is a lot of snow and freezing rain through the mountains. you don't have no

is it. jobina: one of the strategies of the california highway patrol is using the escorting of vehicles. they say the slow-paced helps keyed up the roadway so it can fully reopen to traffic. reggie: this dramatic video caught the moment some large boulders tumbled down onto a road in malibu. imagine being right there. it caused an officer to quickly run out of the way. this happened on malibu canyon road yesterday afternoon. no one was hurt. not long after that chp announced closure of that road for about 12 hours because of the high risk of more sliding. jobina: it is always a magical day at disneyland. yesterday was extra special because guests were greeted with what appeared to be snow on main street. it is actually what is known as graupel. graupel looks like snow but it is frozen water pellets inscribed as having a power -- having a texture similar to different dots.

jobina: the faa investigating a midair skier that sent seven people to the hospital. the flight was heading from texas to germany yesterday when it experienced severe turbulence. passengers say items were tossed all over the cabin. the plane diverted to dallas airport outside of washington dc. the faa says the flight landed safety -- landed safely. reggie: the faa also investigating a battery fire in the overhead bin of a spirit airflight force to be diverted the flight was going from dallas to orlando but had to stop in jacksonville. the airline says passengers phone being charged with a battery pack caused that fire. crew members were able to put
