ama: a deadly ride down the mountain tonight. those remembering the man from new york who died at heavenly in lake tahoe. good evening. dan: this cut -- lake tahoe is seeing and -- i historic amount of snow. ama: j.r. stone has been speaking with those who that man and other heavenly skiers. reporter: i talked with the victim's friends who expressed their sadness and grief over what happen. their front was someone who worked closely with the deaf community, translating for them and helping them with job applications and so much more. sad news from south lake tahoe. a 46-year-old new yorker heavenly mountain resort on wednesday. the resort confirms the incident happened on an expert trail near an area known as roundabout.

saying he was pronounced dead at the california lodge base area and transferred to the el dorado county corner. he was a strong voice and translator for those in the deaf community. the u.s. deaf ski and snowboard association posting about his passing on thursday along with many of his friends and those individuals he represented in the community. the coo issued a statement saying, heavenly mountain resort , heavenly ski patrol, in the entire resort's family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guests family and friends . south lake tahoe has been hit hard by snow in recent weeks. heavenly posting wednesday that they had received 24 inches of snow in 24 hours. i talked with those just back from the sierra who say it's been extremely busy there. > conditions and be prepared for

residents are running low on supplies after eight feet of snow fell over the past week. gas stations are starting to run out of fuel and those looking for food are scrambling. there is so much snow, the roof collapsed at the only grocery store in the town of crestline. the storeowners tried to clear the snow off of the roof but say they couldn't keep up. they raced to salvage whatever food they could. no one was hurt. dan: tomorrow, it's expected to be another major report on the states snowpack levels. the california department of water resources will conduct the third snow survey of the season. the snowpack is outpacing the state's highest snow season in 1982 winter. you can see it for yourself. today's map from the u.s. drought monitor shows more than 15% of california is entirely out of the drought. really a visible difference from just last week and a drastic change from last year. all that rain and snow is

helping to replenish reservoirs. this is a considerable improvement for the state. water experts say we still have some catching up to do. >> we are at 130% of average statewide precipitation right now. and certainly some areas recovering rapidly from drought in terms of things like repertoire -- reservoir storage. it takes longer to refill groundwater basins. some have been severely depleted over multiple years of drought, more than a decade. dan: we still need several more wet winters in order to snap out of the drought entirely. ama: while we are still in a drought, this rainy season has been crucial in improving our water supply. sandhya patel is here with a perspective on where we are. sandhya: a better place than we were just a week ago. i want to show you the drought conditions statewide. last week, 84% of the state was covered in drought.

highschooler. there has been debate over how the whole thing could've been prevented. a 16-year-old was a student killed during a fight at montgomery high school yesterday. another student was stabbed in the hand, he's ok. that boy's mother says her son was assaulted by the suspect three weeks earlier. the mother claims she met with the school but says the lack of action failed her son. >> the school and the school district failed my son. they failed to jaden and failed the rest of the students that attended the school. dan: the santa rosa police department looked into these claims but found no cases filed by the school. the 15 euros freshman accused of stabbing the other students is in custody, facing felony homicide charges. no comment from the school district. ama: in the east bay, the alameda county district attorney is reportedly adopting new rules that will reduce prison and jail time for some criminals. price is blocking

from adding any sentencing enhancements in most cases. those enhancements would be for things like gun use and gang affiliation. they often adheres onto a sentence. price is ordering prosecutors to offer probation when negotiating a plea deal. these changes are a key part of our campaign provinces of justice reform. dan: paper receipts could soon be going away. bay area lawmaker phil ting reintroduced his effort to ditch those extra long paper receipts. he believes it will help environment. what would change and how it might affect you. reporter: paper receipts, only upon request. legislation reintroduced thursday to encourage waste reduction and limit potential health exposure, such to come from the chemically coded pieces of paper. the move gaining support from late-night host jimmy kimmel who called out a company known for handing out wildly long receipts. >> that's right, cvs.
