some of the team's initiatives this month. >> good morning and welcome to friday, march 3. >> we have live at chase center. and very exciting -- we have jobina live at chase center. a very exciting morning. frances: we are off to a quiet start. this is an out towards downtown san francisco. clear skies and some fog has developed in parts of the north bay. temperatures this morning are not as cold. we are still seeing a few 30's. by 7:00, most of us will be in the 40's. partly cloudy this afternoon. we will see increasing clouds. temperatures inland in the upper 50's. around the bay mid-to-upper 50's. at the coast, low 50's. it will get cloudier and breezier tonight because of the storm that arrives tomorrow. >> now, let's get it over to

the department of water resources will conduct the third sierra snow survey of the season. snowpack is outpacing the highest snow season in 1982-83. you have got to see it for yourself. this is the latest map from the u.s. drought monitor on the left. in the middle, last week. clearly, a little better. you will see the biggest difference. when you compare it to last year. a really drastic change. monitor. reporter: good morning. the key thing to note is despite the rain and snow combined we have been getting lately, experts tell us it is not nearly enough to rebuild our state's seriously depleted water supply and officially get out of the drought. take a look at this.

the federal drought monitor says the drought is over in more than half of california. that includes the bay area. take a closer look at california's drought picture this week compared to six month ago. the colors on the map show drought intensity ranging from abnormally dry in yellow to exceptional drought in dark red. signs of exceptional and extreme drought are gone. >> in terms of things like reservoir storage, it takes longer to recharge groundwater basins. some of our groundwater basins have been severely depleted over multiple years of drought for more than a decade. that is where we have a disconnect between water supply availability and's this one year's hydrology's -- and this one year's hydrology. > vicinity of 127% of the

of statewide precipitation right now. she says while california has made major progress this season, we still have a ways to go. other scientists we spoke with across the state also told us they are predicting we could still have several years to go in this mega drought. reggie: thank you. you can keep an eye on the drought situation where you live, especially as we go into the spring and summer, on the abc 7 drought tracker available any time on our website, abc7news.com. >> friends and family are remembering a man from new york who died at south lake tahoe. 40 six rd wesley wayland died wednesday. the resort -- 46-year-old wesley wayland died wednesday. he was a strong advocate and translator for people in the deaf community. the ski and snowboard association posted about his death yesterday. many people who knew him also

shared condolences. the circumstances behind his death are unclear but it appears there are several trees in the roundabout where the incident happened. reggie: drivers heading to or from the sierra finally have clear roads. highway 50 and interstate 80 are open without restrictions this morning. 80 was shutdown from applegate to the nevada border for several days this week because of whiteout conditions. >> the snow has not just been creating a danger in the sierra. san bernardino county is seeing problems, particularly in the mountains where communities have been buried by snow. the national guard has arrived to help clear some roads after governor newsom declared a state of emergency. residents are running low on supplies after as much as eight feet of snow fell over the past week. gas stations are starting to run out of fuel. those looking for food are scrambling. reggie: alex murdaugh will be sentenced in court today after he was found guilty in the shooting deaths of his wife and son.

it took the jury less than three hours to convict him on two counts of murder and two counts of possessing a weapon during a violent crime. he faces 30 years to life without parole. they say it exam for phis justice no matter how privileged a suspect might be. >> it does not matter how prominent you are. if you do wrong, if you break the law, if you murder, justice will be done in south carolina. reggie: his wife and son were shot to death near the family's dog kennels and 2021. his alibi was questioned after prosecutors revealed this could be heard in a video filmed by his late son minutes before the killings. he admitted to lying about not being at the crime scene that night. >> coming up, the prominent bay area politician they hope for nancy pelosi's house eat in 2024.

yes! jobina: you all are amazing. thank you for that. we are kicking off women's history month live at chase center. rakuten, the warriors, our lovely dancers, all have different plans to honor and celebrate women. they are calling it women empowerment. we were talking about this earlier. instead of talking about it as history, we are empowering the women of today. what are you working on? >> this month, we are doing a collaboration dance piece with all of the women within the warriors dance team ranging from junior jam to gold squad to hardwood classic. we will be doing that march 28. jobina: love that. i just learned in the last minute that you used to dance with the warriors many years ago. you are back with the hardwood dancers. i find that so fascinating that you are resting on the

importance of this being accessible to people of all ages. >> exactly. with this collaboration, one thing that feels inspiring for me is we are honoring women of all ages from the girls of junior jam up to hardwood classics. that feels special for me having been in courtney's place back in the 1980's and seeing the evolution of this organization and how empowering women has become not just a monthly one-month anniversary but throughout the year. jobina: i think it is important in a field like this in dance and sports weather is a lot of emphasis on being young and having the focus be there. you are coming in hot. you have a dance coming up soon honoring breast cancer survivors. liz: absolutely. on the 11th, we have a game

performance called "survivor." one of our breast cancer is being highlighted. she is one of the few breast cancer survivors on the team. one of our breast cancer survivors is being highlighted. it is about energy and being able to have joy of movement and joy in our bodies and be able to express and interact with dub nation. jobina: i know you all have various programs throughout the year. it is not just this one month. interesting workshops, too. liz: our coaches are great. women leaders. some workshops we have got to do this past year have been a financial literacy workshop and a goalsetting workshop. it just goes so much further than this month. jobina: i love it. thank you both very much. when we come back, we will be talking with rakuten about more programming at chase center.

here is a gorgeous view through the crowds at san francisco. a mix of sun and clouds today. temperatures will be mild similar to yesterday's highs. a wet and windy weekend ahead is a slight chance of thunder. the unsettled pattern continues into next week. the highs today will be close to yesterday's numbers. san francisco 55. san jose 59. a few inland neighborhoods reaching the 60's again. cooler at the beaches with the stronger sea breeze that will pick up later tonight into this evening bringing increasing clouds. those overnight into tomorrow will be windy in the 40's around the bay. 30's in parts of the north bay again. check out the rain that comes saturday morning that hits the north bay first. it could be moderate and even heavy at times.

reggie: hey skyscraper in hong kong erupted in flames overnight sending smoke in the sky and debris falling more than 40 stories down. no injuries have been reported. it took nine hours to get the fire out.

the building was under construction and next to a popular shopping area. it forced nearly 200 people to evacuate. the cause of the fire is under investigation. scott says he is exploring run for congress if nancy pelosi decides not to run for another term. he said he has launched a committee to export options for a potential run. pelosi has yet to announce if she will seek another term after 2024. potential candidates will need to officially declare running by december. alaska airlines has unveiled a special piece of art on one of its boeing 737's. i think you'll like it. i think it is cool. the san francisco giants mascot is displayed in larger-than-life form on the sides of the plane. the airline has had giants themed artwork for years.

of the drought. a visible difference from just last week even. and a drastic change from the same time last year. lena howland has more drought conditions. reporter: good morning. yesterday's look at the federal drought monitor told us half of the state, including parts of the bay area like san jose, are out of the drought. that is something we have been waiting a long time to say. look at the more promising drought picture this week. compared to six month ago with the map showing drought intensity ranging from abnormally dry in yellow to exceptional drought in dark red. they

they have infrastructure to store the water and put it to use. they are looking at other water supply projects in the meantime. >> we cannot rely on mother nature. mother nature with climate change be boom and bust. during the bust years, we need a local, reliable water supply. that is why we are looking at recycled wastewater and recycled and purified water programs. reporter: water experts say rain this season is great but it will not wipe out the mega drought we face. scientists predict the mega drought will continue for years to come. that is why they say we need to continue with water conservation efforts and we need several more wet winters to get out of the mega drought completely. reggie: thank you. oakland police are cracking down

after numerous atm armed robberies. they are warning people to be careful if you are going to make a transaction. they will increase patrols in the areas where this is happening. there are multiple reports last month of people been robbed. three armed robberies occurred on fruitvale avenue. another happened on lake park avenue where a victim was pistol whipped and their keys were stolen. police say two scans the area before you walk up to the machine and put cash away after a transaction. liz: people have been warned of the risk of not logging off after making transactions with atm's. multiple people told michael finney they got scammed after using chase atm's on mission street in san francisco. when they were about to use the atm, the card reader was not working. i man behind them suggested using cap to pay instead. it works but hundreds of dollars

were taken from their account. >> that guy scammed me last night at the atm machine. >> i thought he was just using the atm. liz: thank managers say suspects put glue in the card reader. when you hit cap to pay, the account remains open unless you close it. the person behind them and continue making transactions on their account. reggie: police have made an arrest in last month's attack on a food vendor. he faces felony assault charges. the attack left the vendor with a broken nose and loose teeth. police say the incident took place after the suspect demanded a free hotdog. liz: a happy update on a pet adoption group's man stolen -- van stolen with cats inside. gloria has this positive update. reporter: we got an update from

the rescue. all the cats are doing well. they are safe. they have food and water now. check this out. >> thank you, thank you. reporter: the everyone who helped them find the stolen cats. the 10 pharaoh cats were stolen along with the van last week. the president of the adoption group says someone broke into it and four minutes later, it was gone. we have a new interview morning. they tell us they are happy the kitties are back. >> we were getting hopeless but we are super excited to have all of the cats back safe and sound and looking great. not smelling good but looking great. >> what a miracle.

even the van is in good shape. reporter: the organization rescues cats and dogs from high kill shelters and rehabs feral kitties. you might wonder about adopting them. they will not be adopted out. they will be taken to clinics, rehab, and sent back to where they came from. a very good update. reggie: some bay area lawmakers are trying to make paper receipts a thing of the past. he reopened the digital. restaurant owners say it could make operations for small business complicated. >> they will have to search other pos companies to be able to sign on and pay for the hardware and software used. it could be extra costs for small restaurants.

supporting women in the community. later this month, we will be rewarding amazing young female athletes with scholarships to the juarez basketball academy powered by rakuten. we are super excited to be doing that and getting involved in it. later this month, we will be doing our fifth edition of the leaders which is a wonderful mentoring program for girls as part of girls inc. who are paired up with employees from the warriors and rakuten. it is a fun-filled mentoring expanse with panel discussions, any phone networking expenses, as well as job shadowing. it is a wonderful way to uplift the voices of women in our community. jobina: been with rakuten for about five years. this initiative is not new to the all. it is something you do all year

with the wares. what do you want the girls to walk out of the room with? >> we want them to be seen we have a long ways to go but we have made a lot of progress in empowering the next generation of female leaders print the next generation can do a lot to show up for ourselves but also the next generation to show them how it is done so they feel it is easier moving forward. jobina: what are some things people did not know? >> this is something we hope to do continuously. we love to support female empowerment, especially with the warriors who are a valued partner of us. the women's empowerment month platform ties in naturally to our season-long program with the warriors called "empowered" which is all about supporting women in the community.

each other at various occasions throughout the years. it was especially for me to see you media from being a grieving father who lost a wife and to being the person indicted and convicted of killing them. duplicitous conduct here in the courtroom and, as established by the

testimony, throughout the leading from the time of the indictment and prior to the indictment, throughout the trial to this moment in time, certainly, you have no obligation to say anything than saying "not guilty." and obviously, as appeals are probably expected or absolutely expected, confession of any kind. as i have presided over murder cases the past 22 years, i have yet to find a defendant who could go back to that moment in time when they decided to pull

the trigger or otherwise murder someone. i've not been able to get any defendant, even confessed to being guilty, to go back and explain to me what happened at that moment in time when they opted to pull the trigger, when they opted to commit a most heinous kind the most heinous crimes known to man. this case qualifies under our death penalty statute, based on the aggravating circumstances two or more people being murdered by the defendant by one
