the country. from coast to coast we've got storms. flooding in indiana, and we've got our eyes on this next big winter storm that's going to be moving into california. things have been so calm and quiet out that way, that if you were planning on heading to the sierra nevadas for any region, hold on. we've got another storm moving in, and we're going to talk more about this and go completely in-depth. stick around. janai, for now, back to you. >> a lot going on around the country. now to the dire situation in mountain communities in southern california where some people have been trapped now for more than a week by the massive snowfall. abc's demarco morgan is in san bernardino with more. demarco, we see all that snow behind you. >> reporter: janai, good morning. take a look at the snowbank behind me in the parking lot of that grocery store where the roof collapsed. at one point the snow was actually at this level throughout this entire area. the good news is you can drive and travel on the main roads. the bad news, the roads leading up to those homes, the side streets, they're still covered in snow leaving residents trapped.

this morning families in san bernardino county desperately pleading for help, trapped in their homes for more than a week. this desperate messa in the snow reading "help us" as families from aid.cafoiaatnal g joint task force going door to door in lake arrowhead. one man being forced to dig under the mountain of snow covering his driveway and car. >> this is my car down here. >> so this is one example of what many of the families are dealing with up here in crestline. as you can see, we've got about eight foot of snow piled up here. >> reporter: one family telling abc news that they only have a few days before they run out of propane leaving them with no heat. >> i assume that we're going to be in some pretty dark times here. it's cold. it gets really cold at night. >> reporter: authorities getting to work plowing roads and ensuring that residents get the

supplies they need. >> residents who are still trapped, if you have food and water, please remain sheltered in place. >> reporter: though it hasn't snowed in big bear for days, gas stations closed. shelves at grocery stores bare. >> it feels like it's the end of the world. >> reporter: crestline residents lining up around the block at a market whose roof collapsed earlier in the week due to the heavy snow. some residents haven't been able to reach their loved ones with the main road to crestline and lake arrowhead closed off to the general public. >> my wife is up there alone, and it's been stressful mentally. like i said, i haven't been home, so i'm figuring out how to get to her as soon as possible. >> reporter: we are not out of the clear jaws yet. officials say it could take up to a week, if not more, to get to those impacted areas hit by the snow. eva. >> demarco morgan there for us. demarco, thank you. this morning disgraced former attorney alex murdaugh is beginning his new life behind bars. a judge sentencing murdaugh t life in prison for the murders of his wife and son. the 54-year-old now also with a

new mug shot. officials sharing that photo. his head shaved. they say he is at the kirkland reception and evaluation center in columbia, south carolina, where he is beginning that life sentence. at his court hearing, murdaugh appeared in shackles and a prison jumpsuit, and the judge seemingly wanting him to confess and admonishing him for his duplicitous conduct throughout the trial but murdaugh, once again, proclaimed his innocence, and there were the parents of mallory beach who died in the boating accident where paul murdaugh was allegedly drunk while driving the boat. 22-year-old paul was facing charges in that incident before he was murdered. also there, some of the jurors, the panel that took less than three hours to find murdaugh guilty of killing his wife maggie and his younger son. murdaugh is still facing about 100 more charges related to alleged financial crimes including fraud, money laundering and tax evasion, and his lawyers say he plans to appeal the verdict in the murder trial. we'll have much more on alex

murdaugh in our next half hour. well, now to disturbing new details about a man alleged to have targeted transformers using explosive devices. abc's zohreen shah has more following a police search of his home. zohreen? >> reporter: eva, these incidents had a lot of people just terrified, and now a san jose resident, 36-year-old peter karasev has been arrested. authorities say he is responsible for blowing up at least two pg&e transformers in december and january and had explosive material inside of his home. police say surveillance video and cell phone pings are what led them to karasev. they also say the software engineer had an inactive meth lab in his home and admitted to using meth. he's been charged with two counts of exploding a destructive device and two counts of destroying an electrical line and one arson charge. it's also possible that he could face more charges. he appeared in court yesterday for the very first time.

he's expected to be back in court in late april. janai? >> disturbing details, zohreen, thank you. turning now to the white house, revealing president biden had a small cancerous lesion removed during his annual physical. abc's elizabeth schulze is on the north lawn of the white house with details. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: janai, good morning. he white house now says that this small lesion that was removed from president biden's chest during his annual physical last month was a common type of skin cancer. the white house doctor writing in a new memo that all cancerous tissue was successfully removed and no further treatment is required, adding the site of the biopsy has healed nicely. it will continue to be monitored as part of biden's routine care. now, this type of cancer called basal cell carcinoma does not tend to spread like melanoma, but it can increase in size if untreated. it's the most common type of skin cancer in the u.s. with about 3 to 5 million cases diagnosed every year. the first lady also had two

similar cancerous lesions removed in january from her face and chest. she says she is so lucky that doctors caught it, and as president biden possibly gears up for an expected re-election campaign, his doctor did say last month that he's healthy, vigorous, and fit for office. whit? >> elizabeth schulze, thank you. overseas now, intense battles are raging in eastern ukraine where russian and ukrainian forces are fighting for control of the key city of bakhmut. a victory there would be a boost for vladimir putin. abc's foreign correspondent james longman joins us now from ukraine where there has been yet another deadly strike on an apartment building there. james, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. emergency workers have now pulled ten bodies from the rubble of that apartment building in zaporizhzhia including, very sadly, the body of a child. president zelenskyy has said that russia needs to be held accountable for these sorts of strikes. on that note, merrick garland, the u.s. attorney general, has been in ukraine for a surprise visit with prosecutors and

attorneys general from all over the world just to talk about that, about how russia can be held accountable for these alleged war crimes. meanwhile, the situation in bakhmut looks increasingly grave. 5,000 people look to be stuck inside the town trying to get out. many of them -- wagner group, the mercenary group that russia engages to fight the war, they say they have encircled the town but ukraine says it's sending reinforcements. there's been a new announcement of new aid here, $400 million from the united states including eight armored vehicles that are able to launch bridges, foldable bridges over rivers and other difficult terrain. it's that continued support the theme of conversations between president biden and olaf scholz, the german chancellor at the white house. the western alliance that supports ukraine, they are increasingly concerned about china's support for russia and so they feel it's very important that they show this united front. eva? >> james longman for us there in ukraine, james, thank you. well, to the middle east now and tensions between palestinians and israelis are

escalating after the death of a 15-year-old boy on the israeli occupied west bank. abc's ines de la cuetara has been following developments and she joins us now from east jerusalem. good morning, ines. >> reporter: good morning, eva. and we are seeing more violence here than we have in decades with dozens of palestinians injured, including a 15-year-old boy who was shot and killed by israeli fire. this coming on the heels of those horrific scenes of violence that we saw playing out in the town in the west bank that was stormed by a mob of israeli settlers who set dozens of palestinian homes and cars and businesses on fire. over 360 palestinians were injured. one man was killed, and yesterday we saw a group of israelis heading there in a show of solidarity. they wound up clashing undethw , st conservatee and, meanwhilem the u.s. defense secretary lloyd austin will be

coming here to the region next week and will be discussing those tensions and iran's advancing nuclear program. guys? >> certainly concerning, ines, thank you for that update. back here at home now to the latest on the toxic train derailment in ohio. the first of some 2,000 feet of track are beginning to be removed from the site. abc's mona kosar abdi joins us from east palestine with the details as we're getting our first ideas of the health problems people who live in the area are reporting now in the aftermath of that incident. mona, good morning. >> reporter: janai, good morning. norfolk southern's apologies are falling on deaf ears here in east palestine. it has been over a month since that toxic train derailment, and people say they are still living in hotels and dealing with health issues. this as the epa has ordered new testing for dangerous pollutants. abc affiliate wews capturing crews starting the task of removing nearly 2,000 feet of rail.

>>pa will reque rfolk southern tsa dioxins under our oversight, and we will direct the company to conduct immediate cleanup if contaminants from the derailment are found. >> reporter: dioxins are toxic chemical compounds that take a long time to break down once they're exposed to an environment. they can also cause serious health problems such as cancer, reproductive and developmental problems. the east palestine community directly confronting the rail company in a town hall late this week urgently requesting for evacuations. >> i'm begging you by the grace of god, please get our people out of here. >> yes. >> reporter: residents also speaking about the health issues they say they're experiencing following the return to the area after the incident. >> it was harder and harder and harder to take a deep breath. we ended up having to go to the hospital. >> reporter: the ohio department of health releasing the first results of their health assessment showing the most common symptoms include

headache, anxiety, coughing, fatigue and tiredness, irritation, pain or burning of skin, and the epa has delegated the dioxin testing to norfolk southern but says they will oversee the process. so far the epa says they have found no evidence of dioxin exposure. whit? >> still so much uncertainty and frustration for the people there. mona, thank you. now to the family of an american woman who died in mexico calling for high-level diplomatic intervention in the case. they say the person responsible for her death needs to be justice for shanquella robinson. >> reporter: this morning for over 125 days, the family of shanquella robinson outraged demanding justice after the 25-year-old was found dead at a luxury resort in mexico. >> 15 weeks and 3 days and still with all this visual evidence, nobody has been arrested.

>> reporter: last october robinson was found dead in san jose del cabo, mexico, during a group vacation. authorities finding her body less than 24 hours after she arrived. she and a group of six other individuals traveled there for vacation. the party reportedly blaming robinson's death on alcohol poisoning, however, an autopsy later concluded that she had suffered trauma to her neck and spine. in one now viral video too violent to show, robinson is seen being severely beaten by another woman in her hotel room while at least two other people in the room watched and recorded the incident. mexican authorities say the investigation is ongoing and that this was not an accident but a direct attack on robinson. mexican authorities issued an arrest warrant for a female suspect back in november 2022 and requested she be extradited from the u.s. >> no one has been arrested. the people who knew what

happened to my daughter are living their lives. they have returned to work, and my family is left to wait and to beg for answers. >> reporter: now, the traveling party came back to the u.s. a day after the body was found. while no arrests have been made, the robinson family is calling for everyone involved in the incident to be extradited back to mexico in order to face charges. eva? >> ike ejiochi for us there, thanks, ike. president biden handing out a long overdue honor to an american war hero. retired army colonel paris davis back in uniform and at the white house as he was awarded the medal of honor for his bravery in vietnam nearly 60 years later. davis, who was one of the first black officers in the special forces, hailed a hero for staying with his troops until the very end during an 18-hour gun battle despite being shot multiple times. >> 60 years later. congratulations to him. >> long overdue. >> quite the hero. >> absolutely. it is time now for a check of the weather and back to somara.

a. >> hey, everyone. good morning to my friends at home, as well. you know, we've been tracking this storm that relentless in nature, just bringing severe weather to the southeast, and now we've seen snow up into areas like coldwater, michigan. look at the cars driving off the embankment there, just overwhelming amounts of snow, and you're in for another round, but before it reaches you, it's got to hit california first, unfortunately. here's a look at what we're tracking. we have seen copious amounts of snow already through the sierra nevada. we're going to see that get going about 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, still seeing snow, and look at the totals, 6 to 12 inches generally but we could see 4 to 5 feet of snow in some of those higher elevations that have already been inundated, and then that snow moves to the upper midwest. that's a look at the weather

that's a good sign. >> oh, stop. >> it took her five years to follow us. >> it took her so long to follow us back. >> i'm not good on twitter. >> welcome, somara. >> we'll chat with you later on this morning. we do have more news including that breaking news from overnight. actor tom sizemore has died at the age of 61. the "saving private ryan" and "black hawk down" actor suffered a brain aneurysm a few weeks ago. actor tom sizemore died friday following complications from a brain aneurysm he suffered last month. sizemore often known for playing the tough guy sharing the big screen with some of hollywood's biggest stars in hits like "saving private ryan." >> mike, are you all right? >> i just got the wind knocked out of me. >> well, get out of here. >> reporter: "black hawk down." >> how are things going? things okay? >> reporter: and "heat." >> for me the action is the juice. >> reporter: sizemore had been in a coma since february 18th. his family ultimately deciding to take him off life support. his brother releasing a statement saying, i am deeply saddened by the loss of my big brother tom.

he was talented, loving, giving, and could keep you entertained endlessly with his wit and storytelling ability. >> i'm a kid from detroit. you know, i had a dream about being in the movies when i was 12. i made my parents call me steve after steve mcqueen, then i had them call me james after james dean, and they finally went, you're tom. >> reporter: but sizemore's battle with drug addiction caused turbulence in his life behind the scenes. he was convicted of domestic violence in 2003 and again in 2017. film critic richard roper tweeting, wishing tom sizemore the peace and rest that was so elusive for him on this earth. tom sizemore is survived by his two teenage sons. he was 61 years old. his rep telling abc news, the actor passed away peacefully in his sleep. his brother paul and twin boys were at his side. and, of course, we are thinking about their family this morning. coming up, one of the jurors who convicted alex murdaugh of murdering his wife and son

the other big stories we're following on this saturday morning. happening right now, walgreens revealing it will not make abortion medication available in 20 republican-led states after threatof aion. pl are stillel and some of those states. the white house calling threats to pharmacies for selling fda-approved medication dangerous and unacceptable. also right now, an armed carjacker is in police custody after taking officers on quite a ride near los angeles. the man is seen shooting at officers with what appears to be a rifle out the driver's side window of a pickup truck police say that he stole. more than an hour long chase ending when the man crashed the truck and tried to take another before police took him down. 33 mushers are -- and dozens of dogs are getting ready to participate in this year's iditarod race.

the teams will take off with a ceremonial start this morning, and then the official start this afternoon for the 1,000-mile dash from anchorage. >> my dog copper thinks he's a sled dog. gets us out on the leash and pulls us right down the street. >> i knew you were going to start talking about copper. >> he's a good boy. >> he is. >> he's a good boy. we do start this half hour with a family demanding answers following the death of their son after a police stop. abc's zohreen shah joins us with more as the family tries to find out the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting. zohreen, good morning again to you. >> reporter: good morning, janai. family, local officials, and the public were putting a lot of pressure on police, and now it is still early in the investigation, but overnight police finally released what they saw on those body-worn cameras. this morning five utah police officers are on administrative leave following a shooting in broad daylight that left a man dead and his family searching for answers. >> engine 71, medic 71, respond to the post office.

one for a gunshot. >> reporter: overnight farmington police giving their most detailed account of the shooting that happened outside the local post office. according to police, 25-year-old chase allan was pulled over wednesday because his car had an illegitimate license plate. they say he refused to cooperate or show any identification. responding officers called for backup. they allegedly asked allan to get out of the car but say he refused. police then describe what they saw on body camera, saying as they tried to pull him out, an observing officer yelled, gun, gun, gun. they say a struggle lasted a few seconds, and then gunshots could be heard through the camera. police say the footage also shows an empty holster on allan's right hip and a handgun on the driver's side floorboard. >> i know my guys, and if they fired shots, i'm certain they were in fear of their life. >> the legislature has made it so easy to carry a firearm, whether in your vehicle or on your person. so it really gets down to, not the fact that he had a gun, did he point that in the direction of the police officers?

to safety, and that was an ef-3 tornado, so great job to those officers. those storms can be so incredibly powerful demolishing homes like that. now, we're going to shift gears here and move from severe weather to wintry weather. that's what's going to be impacting a lot of the country in the coming days. starting in the west, we have the winter storm warning that's getting ready to move through california, nevada, winter weather advisories north of there. winter storm watch into parts of the northern plains and out towards the upper great lakes as well, and we've got some flooding potential out in indiana. so here's the timing on the storm. we talk about it moving into california over the weekend. where does it go after that? well, it heads into areas like sioux falls, minneapolis, chicago, michigan. by monday morning arriving around 7:00 a.m., and then as we move into tuesday, this is going to move to the east coast. new york may be in on some flakes out there up into areas like northern -- i'm sorry -- upper new york, as well.
