meteorologist lisa argen. hi, lisa. lisa: live doppler 7 showing you how it is lit up in the south bay, but as we look over toward richmond and kensington, you can see it is beginning to break up a little bit, but a solid deck of light rain through parts of the city, down through 280, right here in the south bay near bluffton hill road is where we are looking at some of the rain, moderate, and some of the snow accumulating around mount hamilton of course, that is around 2000 feet. the snow around 3000 feet. this is a level 1 system, and the snow levels will be below 2000 feet. slight chance of a thunderstorm, and as we go through the next several hours, that wintry mix is with us the whole day today with the scattered showers, liz. liz: thank you. graupel falling down, covering roads, cars, and trees. this is in grip blue point

overnight. the roads look i, as you can see. -- in the roads look icy, as you can see. more snow from that level one storm this weekend. the snow came down again and napa county on highway 29 near calistoga. a lot of snow. it started to follow the 10:00 yesterday morning and continues for a couple of hours. >> i have never really seen anything like it. i mean, i've heard snow like this happening up here before, but that is way up at. the peak. i have never seen snow this low in elevation. liz: caltrans began clearing the highway once the snow started falling to her highway 29 got hit hard during last week close the storm, and as such, had to close for several days. in the sierra, the roads are

also a mess right now because of the snow. interstate 80 is shut down again westbound at the state line and eastbound at colfax. the road conditions a really bad there. it has been an epic season for the mountains with even more snow to come. as abc 7 news anser hassan tells us, it may be great for skiers and snowboarders, but there are all kinds of hazards. anser: there has been so much snow coming down in the sierra nevada, caltrans is struggling to keep the roads clear. >> it is taking a toll on the roads. currently, the i-80 is still closed. anser: justin is a meteorologist at the national weather service in reno. he says the sierra nevada is expected to get pounded by snow. saturday was hit hard, but the heaviest snow is yet to come. just in multiple feet for the sierra, 38

a foot and a half in truckee. anser: accumulated snowfall is over 500 inches, compared to the median average of 360 inches over the past 30 years. more storms in march could keep the snowpack on pace to break the record set in the winter of 1982-1983. justin: at least in the central sierra, it is 196% of normal for this state, up-to-date, so a very unusual snow depth and snow amounts for the sierra this season. anser: temperatures appear to be colder than usual, which keep the snow from melting, often to the delight of skiers and snowboarders. but heavy snow created whiteout conditions, which has created low visibility, already causing crashes and spinouts. collins says this weekend may not be the best to travel.

justin: stay home at least until the storms pass and the roads get cleared out, because it can get slick. anser: another reason to stay home, the threat of avalanches, which has already been posted for parts of the sierra from now until monday. anser hassan, abc 7 news. even though they are open. most roads are closed following recent snowfall. many residents are digging themselves out. the snow has made big bear lake hard to reach, and that is leaving many grocery store shelves empty, gas stations out of fuel. that has led to many residentss wondering if they can even support tourists. >> let alone for the people who are coming up here for a vacation. liz: there is no clear timetable as to when roads and the highways in the san bernardino mountains will reopen for business. you can keep track of weather conditions and access the same live doppler 7 our weather team

uses. that is available on demand on the abc 7 bay area app. new this morning, a man was killed after a car hit him while he was riding his bike on the freeway in san jose. the crash happened last night on northbound 101 near east rakell road around 9:00 p.m. as authorities arrived on the scene, they did close two lanes for couple of hours, but those lanes did reopen around 11:00 last night. a robbery and chase started in pleasant hill yesterday. two suspects robbed a verizon store. officers found them in concord and said when they tried to get them to stop, the suspect had an officer with their car. that officer then opened fire, hitting the car, and it took off. while that was happening, the second suspect got away. officers eventually caught up with the car, ending the chase in bay point. oakland families of homicide victims and anti-violence groups are calling for a former police chief leronne armstrong.

be rehired. abc 7 news more. lena: two and a half weeks after oakland mayor sheng thao fired chief leronne armstrong, saying -- mayor thao: i have decided to separate chief leronne armstrong from the city without cause. lena: violence intervention organizations, nonprofits, and families that have lost loved ones to violence on the streets of oakland are pushing back. >> we like chief armstrong, because he cares about this community, he cares about us, he truly cares about us and our pain. who else cares like he does? lena: this comes as oakland police say they are investigating a string of violence, after they say four people were killed in four separate shootings last weekend alone, three of which happened on friday the 24th. >> february the 24th is called bloody friday. we lost several of our loved ones, so many shootings over the weekend. >> we have to stop these

killings, we need somebody that is in there that knows what he's doing. lena: armstrong was originally put on federally paid administrative leave when a federal monitor questioned his actions against one of his sergeants. now organizers are pushing to hold a town hall with mayor sheng thao about the fallout. >> we are asking the mayor to be accountable for the things that she said she was going to do. you're going to take care of the community? here we are. lena: chief leronne armstrong was not there for saturday's rally, but he did release a statement, saying i thank them for their support of me, my and my policies as victims reduced violence and improve public safety in oakland. while the search for a new police chief is underway, armstrong's legal team already filed an official appeal to dispute this firing last week. in oakland, lena howland, abc 7 news. liz: in the south bay, officers are still going back and forth to the home of a san jose man

who was accused of blowing up at least two pg&e inside the home, investigators say they found explosive materials and an inactive drug lab used to make metadata main. 36-year-old peter karasev is in jail and faces nine different charges. officers will be at his home for a few more days out this investigation continues. students at montgomery high school in santa rosa are planning a walk out tomorrow. this comes as we learn police will be at the school when students returned following a deadly stabbing. the police chief issued a statement, saying he picked three police officers to welcome back students and staff to the school. last week, 16-year-old jaden pienta was killed in a stabbing at the school. officers arrested two students. chief john cregan will also say he will attend an upcoming listening session scheduled for tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the freeman event center in santa rosa. abc 7 news is committed to

building a better bay area, and a part of that is discussing the issues of reparations for african americans in california. the california department of justice held a second public hearing in sacramento yesterday. this is an effort to study and develop reparation proposals for a bill enacted back in september 2020. people from across the state shared public comments on the historic treatment of african americans in the u.s. comments included generational impacts from slavery, equity, and other civil-rights issues. . one bay area woman presented some ideas. >> california is supposed to be a things were a state and has never been one for us. we should be receiving land, cash, economic equality, resources, we need agency, we need restoration of hope in our communities. liz: the respirators -- the reparations task force said they will hold periodic public meetings. present biden will mark the 50th

promoting his new book, and he did so in the bay area. people felt the bern and san jose last night. visitors from as far away as fresno joined the presidential candidate for a book discussion for his new york times best seller is entitled "it is ok to be angry about capitalism." sen. sanders: we wanted an honest assessment of the reality of american life for tens of millions of people whose pain is very rarely discussed. liz: a literary foundation hosted the event, and each attendee received a free copy of the book. the dazzling display of lights that have been on the bay bridge for the past decade or so is coming to an end. the insulation goes dark tonight unless $11 million can be raised to replace many of the burnt out bulbs. abc 7 news reporter suzanne phan tells us about the massive

fundraising campaign underway. suzanne: the bay bridge lights make the perfect backdrop for so many photographs. >> it is stunning to we really love it. suzanne: the light insulation has dazzled visitors and locals alike. >> it is a good representation of the beauty of the city. suzanne: but on sunday night, the lights will shut off. that is hard for many people to believe. >> i don't think we should lose these lights. it is too pretty. >> the bay area is lights, and it needs to come down. suzanne: the plan is to take the lights down and replace them with better lights. davis says it will cost $11 million to bring the lights back for the next decade. the goal is to get 10 individuals to give $1 million each. >> we have a gentleman with the comb foundation, and they have given $1 million. suzanne: the last $1 million in donations will come from a crowdfunding campaign just launched at the bay lights

360.org. so far, nearly $6 million have been raised. >> we need a few thunderbolts of love right now. if we get that, this project can come back. suzanne: ben davis says the new insulation will have leds, and that man's lights can be seen around the bay. >> you will be able to see it not only the city side, but carefully and safely to drivers as they go across the bridge. suzanne: at the waterfront, patrons come for the oysters as well as the great view of the bay bridge lights. >> ■it is dazzling. it brings the cities like across the bay. suzanne: the lights are switching off, but they will be back once the enough money is raised. >> we just have to tell the people to have hope, because that is what the bay lights are all about. it is about hope, and i think in this day right now, san francisco can use it. suzanne: in san francisco, suzanne phan, abc 7 news. liz: hopefully those can stay on

and we will get them back soon. the holy festival of color kicks off at open house go in fremont. people enjoyed throwing by the ratable colors and dancing to bali would music. local dignitaries also joined the event, which is known to be the biggest festival in hinduism. abc 7 news was there to capture it all, and the rain did not stop the celebration. >> we try to make as much fun as possible, and even though the weather was not great during the first half of the day, i think it makes for a good part of the festival. liz: organizations hosted the festivities. it is a popular hindu festival that celebrates love, fertility, and life, and the triumph of good over evil. all right, lisa, i feel like my shirt matches the festival. we are channeling spring as well. lisa: well, we are certainly getting the spring showers, with heavy rain overnight. i don't know if you were woken

up by that. some small hail as the system exits the south bay right now. we are getting showers behind it, and that will be the scattered showers, the snow levels, which are lowering and bringing snow to mount hamilton. here is a look at live doppler 7 . we will zoom in on the areas, looking at the rain right now, which is over into the east bay, as you can see, walnut creek and 580 here, also toward highway four as we go in here, you will notice the darker's shade of green. some showers back here at 880 through the east bay and looking at a wet san francisco, but it is beginning to break up here along the peninsula kid you can see 280, san mateo, we've got the green here represent some rain, and it is pushing further south into the south you can see the snow from not only the santa cruz mountains but mount hamilton, so certainly that

wintry mix still with us. there's a look at the current numbers, a little bit cooler this morning. 43 in vallejo, 41 in fremont. with all those 40's and the upper elevation already into some snow, not hard to see the temperatures stay on the cool side today. with the rain showers, the breezy wind anywhere from 23 miles an hour, the gusts of 32 over in oakland, as you look outside, certainly the wet pavement and forecast headlines look like this, wet and wintry weather today with our level 1 system. the unsettled pattern continues into this week. the showers will be scattered, will be in that post frontal atmosphere, which brings cold, unstable air, a chance for thunderstorms possible, just a slight chance, and we are looking at the snow in the sierra nevada's, still a couple inches an hour here is the plan for the day today. notice how things begin to break up, but there are still showers out there. we stop this at 1:00, and you will notice that rain-snow mix

to the north, and you can see over one inch in mount . but the bulk of the day, partly cloudy, scattered showers, stopping this at 9:30, there's more, and you can see the rotation of the impulses that continue to move through into monday morning, the wintry mix, the rain. and then as we look at your 10:00 forecast for tonight, this forecast model brings another line of rain. and then we continue into tuesday. so a system to the north kind of blocked, setting us in this pattern where we see one wave of energy after the next. it is not going to be a lot of rain unless you are under a thunderstorm. we are looking at maybe 2/10 to 3/4 of an inch, and it is wet out there over to the east bay, the oakland airport as well, so if you have a flight out, look at that. it will probably take you some extra time. so certainly the east bay into the south bay right now feeling the brunt of the shower activity. six inches to 12 inches at the

through overnight and is pushing its way through the south bay to do see a lot of lightning strikes, and as we go in closer, the north bay is quiet right now . the most active weather around the east bay, right around danville, 680, 580. some moderate rain, and back through the peninsula, scattered showers all the way through palo alto. in the south bay, from morgan hill, san martin, gilroy, and in the santa cruz mountains, the snow, mount hamilton, no problem with that snow accumulation could we have a winter weather advisory north, east bay hills, south bay hills, throughout the day today. showers, breezy winds, and below snow levels. the best chance of a thunderstorm well into the north, especially into oakland. 8:00, watch out we have a mixture of clouds and showers right on through the afternoon. through noon time, 50, partly cloudy skies, a few areas of light showers, 3:00, not a whole lot out there, but enough that

you really need to maybe not cancel your outdoor plans but just be aware that you could get your head wet, and we will be looking out the pattern continuing. this takes us right through wednesday. we will show you that in a few minutes. liz? liz: lisa, thank you. people traveling back from lake tahoe or having a lot of trouble getting out of the area because of numerous closures and act up traffic. the national weather service issued a winter storm warning for the greater lake tahoe area in effect until 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. the weather service expects 10 inches to 14 inches of snow, with heavy winds blowing up to 95 miles an hour along the sierra crest. right now, drivers are trying to beat the worst of the storm and get out of the area. >> get back into the traffic, you know, you have to head home. >> i considered not even coming at all, but, yeah, i definitely wanted to get on the road. liz: while many who are leaving come on people who live in the area are bracing for more snow

as road conditions are pretty unstable right now. they are avoiding leaving their home in case they get stuck. deadly storms around the country, wreaking havoc for those caught in the past. at least 12 people have died in states from severe weather that brought golf sized hail and tornadoes to the south. back here at home, people are preparing for more snow. abc 7 news reporter chuck superstrength has details. chuck: people in 37 states feeling the storm that brought heavy rain, damaging wind, and tornadoes. at least five people killed in kentucky alone. take a look at this video could you can see the moment a wind rings down a white castle sign in bowling green, bending it in half and before it crashes onto a car. the governor saying there were hurricane force wind gusts, and you could feel the walls moving injured >> the biggest damage appears to be trees and power

dorsey shows us what the project will look like. dustin: safety is a basic necessity that everyone expects, but in the last few years in san jose, safety is not a given group residents driving, writing -0- riding. >> it can be dangerous, you know what i mean? you watch out for them as you want them to watch out for us. dustin: sadly, that is not always happen to more pedestrians died last year than any other year in san jose, and all-time high for traffic deaths as well. leaders have had enough. >> it must be a priority. we cannot have 63 people die on our street and not care it we need to care very much and make sure we reduce those numbers dramatically. dustin: the places that need special focus and care are the safety boards in the city >> 17 streets account for over half of our fatal injuries.

we look at the rotation of more showers into your monday morning, and then monday night, there's more snow and also more rain, moderate rain. into tuesday, this is tuesday evening, you will see a partly cloudy sky tuesday but still showers offshore here. adding up the totals throughout the day today, very little, so from nothing to maybe 1/10 of an inch, where the showers come down. then we add in monday, tuesday, into wednesday afternoon, and with all of that unstable air and the showers hit-or-miss, you can pick up anywhere from 2/10 to a 1/2 inch over the next few days or so. is there any sign of a warm up throughout the week ahead? should be in the mid 60's not only in the north bay but inland valleys for this time of you can see how cool we are going to be all the way through the weekend. that 60 degree temperature by the end of the week, that could be with a warmer storm system, so it does not necessarily mean we will get a nice, sunny day.
