our way. today has been a day in the bay area. we have an in-depth look. >> wild weather sunday around the bay area. ice peppered windshields. in the oakland hills, decks were sprinkled with small pieces of ice. it quickly melted into puddles. this is how it looked claremont avenue at grizzly point. highway 24 was slick. it was not just rain and we saw lightning in san francisco. this was near highway 101, where there was also flooding overnight. >> now we take a live look

outside, where there are some blue skies. a break in our storms. another storm is on the way. let's talk about the timing. >> we have had a variety pack of weather conditions. let's look live doppler to see what is going on right now. up in the north bay, an area of rainfall. most of the remainder of the area has light sprinkles at the moment. lots of sunshine. we saw another storm. a level 1 for tomorrow. expect some rain. some of that will be scattered. there could be some brief downpours. snow below 2000 feet. a slight chance for thunder. the next wave of rain comes in around 10:00 p.m. and continues. another wave comes in around 5:00 a.m.. i will show you what to expect

beyond that and a cold week ahead. >> sounds good, thanks. we are getting reports of trees toppling across the bay area. one fell and killed a woman. this happened while she was on a group hike in a park in cupertino. our reporter joins us their lives tonight with information on how this all happened. >> a very sad day here open space area. as i drove in, family members were hugging one another. they told me they are still trying to process all of this. the park is open. the trail where this happened is closed. this is about three miles from where i was standing. they got a call around 10:00 this morning that a tree had fallen on a female hiker. she was with a group of individuals but she was the only one hit. that large tree took down a

cluster of trees in the area. the group tried to get the tree off of her but were unsuccessful. fire crews try to savor when they arrived -- save her when they arrived but they were unsuccessful and she died on scene. we spoke to officials a little while ago. >> it is pretty shocking. i've been hiking this for 20 years. this park is awesome. they are constantly trimming the trees, constantly taking care of it. i feel really bad that that happened. >> especially this winter, trees fall, branches break. to have someone struck by a falling tree is extremely rare. >> there are still unanswered questions in this case. we know she was with a group of individuals but was she right next to them when it came down? was it raining? where other people able to get out of the way? did she have headphones on? those are all questions that officials did not have answers

to when i spoke with them a little while ago. the name of the victim has yet to be released pending notification of the family. >> that is so we appreciate you staying on top of this. moving to the north bay, 29 is back open. it was shut down at about 1:00 this afternoon after a large oak tree fell across the roadway. it took crews nearly 90 minutes to clear the roadway. our storms while up to tahoe with snow, leading to a travel warning. these cameras show us exactly why. interstate 80 was closed this morning. chains are required on highway 50. chp warns that drivers could be stuck for hours and close could -- roads to close down. there is a threat of avalanches at all elevations. we have a look at the impact of all of that snow. >> this stuff is light and

drive. it is not like heavy snow pack. >> he has plenty of snow to be thankful for. he lives near south lake tahoe. >> i live in the snow capital of the u.s. right now. >> all the fresh snow is great for the sierra, the ski resorts, and the snowpack. but there is also a lot of danger in the mountains right now. >> with the winds we are experiencing, the avalanche danger is high to extreme. >> at heavenly mountain resort-- >> it has been busy this weekend. >> they have been working on avalanche control. parts of highway 50 have been closed off and on because of that. >> when i was at the top of the mountain, it was a white out. >> caltrans works to clear the roads. >> we are out there clearing snow as quickly as possible. >> ski resorts also have their hands full dealing with all of that fresh powder. >> we have had almost eight feet in the last week.

>> the woman called the mother of the disability rights movement has passed away. she lost the ability to walk at the age of two. she was a longtime activist. she lobbied for legislation that led to the americans with disabilities act. individuals with disabilities act, and the rehabilitation act.

she helped found the berkeley center for independent living. a filmmaker who codirected her story set her passing is a great loss. >> this is a loss of someone with fire in her belly. to say i am a holder of this legacy. i want to honor her and the work of many people who really put their lives at risk for our community. we will press on. >> the cause of her death has not been released. students at montgomery high school in santa rosa are planning a walk out tomorrow to demand increased safety after a deadly stabbing. police will be at the school as students return tomorrow. the police chief says he will have officers to welcome students and staff back. a 16-year-old was killed in a stabbing last wednesday at the school. officers arrested two students. the police chief says he will attend an upcoming listening

session. it is scheduled for tuesday. in the say an engine is out of service and an ambulance had to be towed after a hit-and-run accident. it happened just this morning. both emergency vehicles responding to separate accidents when they were hit. no word on any suspect. none of the firefighters were injured. a lithium scooter battery is being blamed for sparking a fire this afternoon. that is the initial finding by investigators. you can see a scorched battery at the scene.

wire in front of the home. people were told to stay inside until the fire was out. and the wire was deenergized. >> firefighters up to the roof. if we have someone trapped, we have to get those gases out of the building. this is what we train for. we cannot just stop working. >> building, causing some minor damage. no one in some southern california mountain communities, they are digging out. we will take a look at relief efforts in parts of san bernardino county, where people were trapped inside their homes

>> the dazzling display that has lit up the bay bridge will go dark in just a few hours. today is the 10 year anniversary of the light and elation. here are some different vantage points of the lights. they are set to go dark at 8:00 p.m. tonight. they're kind of flickering because some of the bulbs are not working. they need to be replaced. the effort is underway to raise $11 million to cover the cost. after all the money is raised, it could take 8-10 months to reinstall. i know people have a lot of thoughts about the bridge. i think it is pretty. >> even when they are flickering. >> maybe we could see if it is meant to be like this.
