another still popped up fremont. showers this morning are isolated in nature and much of the day today is dry and partly sunny. here is how the day shapes up. in the afternoon the north bay could see one or two showers. for most of us we will wait until tonight to tomorrow morning for widespread rain. that is a level one threat tomorrow night. we take a closer look at the line of showers coming through in a few minutes. reggie: we are learning new details about the mother killed by a fallen tree on a hike with her son and his boy scout troop. she is 44-year-old of san jose. that tragedy underscoring the dangers this coming week with storms. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live. lena: the tragedy that happened here over the weekend does only underscored the danger of the incoming weather this week. park officials are urging all

hikers to use caution on trails which they say continue to be impacted by unprecedented storms this winter. san jose meteorology professor jan knowles says after the collective storm systems hit the bay area the last few months, soils are separate -- soils are saturated, roots are saturated and it won't take much to topple trees. >> you're not going to meet the 50, 60 mile-per-hour wind we start earlier in the winter. we see 20's, 30's, maybe some 40's. but that could be enough with the right circumstances. >> and the general area there's going to be water runoff on branches and other oddities as well. you have got to keep your eye out while running and everything or hiking. lena: news of the death was shocking but not surprising to many of the hikers we spoke with out here.

mid-peninsula regional open space says this was the first incident of its kind in its 50 year history. sunday mornings deadly tree fall accident happened in the stephen e auburn trail. last night part of that trail was still closed off to hikers. jobina: our storm watch continues today as we see up to five more feet of snow expected in the sierra. abc news reporter maura legge is in south lake tahoe with how residents are bracing for storms the rest of the week. >> this morning and already battered california facing challenges as the state sees the snowiest season in more than a decade. in san bernardino county homes destroyed, roots collapsed, cars swallowed and mountains of snow several feet high. across the state cannot seemingly get enough. this car sliding down.

and two homes collapsing. fallen trees, ranches and heavy snow littering the street. some residents frustrated as they start to run low on supplies. >> a lot of people are self-sufficient but we cannot be if we have no clue what is going to happen. >> in utah, salt lake city now buried having their snowiest winter. crews mitigating avalanches. two skiers resulting in a rescue mission. there is reportedly no evidence of anyone trap. the snowfall has been relentless this year. sierra nevada mountains got 48 feet of snow, the most in a decade. more snow is expected. reggie: happening today the community will come today -- will come together in santa rosa to talk school safety following a deadly stabbing at a montgomery -- at montgomery high

school. santa rosa police chief expected to be there. it comes a day after montgomery high school reopened and students holding a walkout calling for justice for 16-year-old student who was killed. the 50 euros suspect faces two felony charges. it has brought back debate of school resource officers. many schools in the bay area no longer have. many voiced their desires to bring those officers back. >> i would like to know if there are talks regarding ringing back and start over. >> i realize when the pandemic hit we lost our sorrow because everybody was working from home. but it is time to bring them back. reggie: santa rosa police say they assigned three officers to santa rosa -- to montgomery high school yesterday. jobina: hackers behind a ransomware attack have leaked stolen data of thousands of city

employees and small business owners. the ransomware attack has been crippling oakland city systems for nearly a month. councilmember noel gaia says the group claiming response ability is known internationally for attacking government organizations and hotel chains. the hackers have asked for $9 million which the city has not paid. >> the concern is that play ransomware may have access to the social security numbers. >> credit card numbers and whatever. that information i am not quite clear. my understanding is that information with a business or someone going to do business with the city may be in jeopardy. jobina: the city is notifying people whose personal information is included in the leak and asked if the city did not have the proper antivirus protection in place, they said, "it appears that is what happen." heavy snow piling up in the sierra.

i love that. let's talk about the weather. live -- active weather the next couple of days. these two are going to come together in what is called phasing and aim the energy right at california. today partly sunny. temperatures in the low to mid 50's. an isolated shower in the north bay but most of us remain dry. tonight we all see some rain as a front moves through the overnight hours. you can even hear some thunder, see some lightning, here's some hail in the early morning hours of this level one light storm moving through. all eyes on the stronger storm system thursday and friday. the biggest difference and information in the last 24 hours is the quicker arrival of this rain. we will likely see showers starting thursday night in the bay area and into the frying

reggie: today the san francisco board of supervisors will revisit a resolution calling on the state to decriminalize sex work. and maybe one day it could lead to a section red light district in the city. action by supervisors right now has little impact. the deadline to introduce new state legislation passed more than two weeks ago. san francisco would need the state to legalize sex work before any kind of red light district could be formed here. the idea for a district has gained momentum as city leaders try to gain momentum in the district. we except to learn more tonight from the san francisco unified school district to recognize religious holidays. tonight the school board expected to vote on the adoption of next school year's academic calendar. next summer the school board added -- decided to add muslim

and we are screaming for help. gloria: hundreds of students walking out of class at santa rosa montgomery high school because of safety concerns. less than a week after jaden pienta was fatally stabbed in classroom. another student was that another student suffers from a stab wound. a safety meeting in l tragedy. many voiced their concerns to bring back school resource officers. that is something montgomery high school did not have. >> i would like to know if there are talks for bringing back the sro. >> when the pandemic hit we lost our sro because everybody was working from home, but it is time to bring them back. gloria: in 2020 santa rosa school trustees voted to pause the student -- the school resource officer program.

creaking. it completely fell. it was a big branch. lena: despite these close cal officials say this was the first incident of its kind in the districts 50 year history. because there is more rain expected this week, park officials are urging all hikers to use extra caution as they hit these trails and open spaces because they say these areas will continue to be impacted by these unprecedented storms this winter. reggie: people in an east bay neighborhood asking for fema's help to fix their private road that got damaged in storms earlier this year. the road is used about a dozen people in moraga. after assessing the repair costs the group went to a federal disaster relief center. >> we are asking fema for help because it is going to be a six-figure amount of work to have the road repaired. because the road is privately
