flooding came from swollen millcreek. runoff flooded armstrong mills road, leaving some drivers stranded. the driver of this fedex truck stalled out and had to be rescued. firefighters say the road was closed and signs were posted. >> you don't know how deep it is, especially if you can't see the centerline, and we say, don't drive through flooded roadways. cornell: tow truck drivers say they pull lots of folks out of roadways this time of year. >> i've been doing this almost 24 years. cornell: as far as the eye can see, many vineyards in the russian river valley look more like lakes. by sunrise, much of the receded. >> we rushed back up here to see the damage. cornell: homeowner josh showed us a redwood tree toppled and

split his mill valley home in half. he and his family were not home at the time. >> the storms took down a tree that was dead, and we identified that the tree needed to come down at some point. it seems like the tree took itself down a little bit early. cornell: that homes suffered to some heavy damage, and it is not safe for residents to stay. firefighters say the russian river is looking good at this hour, holding well below flood stage, but more rain is on the way. river levels are expected to rise again. cornell barnard, abc7news. kristen: crews are scrambling to reopen a root in socal that washed out overnight. too much water in bates creek caused a covert to collapse, trapping hundreds of residents

kristen: it is the second largest bank failure in the history of this country. suzanne phan joins us from the newsroom to take a closer look at how this happened. suzanne: in san francisco, we sub people distraught about the closure of silicon valley bank. >> i suzanne: news of silicon valley bank's shutdown is sending shockwaves across the tech industry. >> it is a shock to a lot of people, a lot of conversations happening right now. suzanne: we saw a number of people anxious to get answers, others eager to withdraw money on howard street. one man told me he was a startup founder. each person was turned away and told to call this number. >> you've reached silicon valley bank. suzanne: this woman is a startup

founder. news of the banks closure came as a big surprise. she chose not to withdraw her money.ayod it is very sudden, and maybe we should give it some time to settle. there is fdic insurance up to $250,000, so i don't know how many people are affected. my balance is insured. suzanne: this start up does not bank with svb. >> but we are working on diversifying where we want to put our funds. suzanne: regulators took over the bank this morning. >> the bank frankly carelessly communicated a few days ago that it would have to support its asset base. some of its assets are now under the price they paid. suzanne: this professor at uc berkeley says these assets are now underwater, and silicon valley bank had to sell them off. >> the of their problem is the bank is hopelessly overexposed

the oscars. larry: carpet that isn't read to this time. what is going on? dion: this is a big shocker. first of all, it is covered in plastic. what is different is for the first time since 1966, the carpet is champagne-colored. you can see there is a bunch to be rolled out ahead of the dolby theater and the award on sunday. it is a controversial change, but it is meant to reflect the celebration of champagne. it is pouring rain right now. the oscars statuettes are covered in plastic, and there are red curtains overhead meant to keep the stars dry. pixar is up for a major award, and the director of "turning red" could be up for an histor

award. both women are nominated for an oscar for their work on the animated film "turning red." she is the first woman to solo direct pixar film. they credit the female team for the bold storyline, a young girl going through puberty. >> it didn't feel taboo for us because we have all been through it. this is a normal thing that girls go through. i think you will see more stories about what push the boundaries of what is taboo. the storytellers are so different now. >> not only were we able to tap into the collective stories of our leadership team about what it was to be 13 and a girl and going through puberty, but we didn't second guess some of the more bold and radical scenes in the film. all of us felt like we had at

crews are concerned about the potential impact to travelers on highway 50 and 80. we are told caltrans has multiple crews in both areas. about 35 degrees, so try to stay warm. larry: niles canyon rhone remains closed between pleasanton and fremont, and we saw vehicles being forced to turn around. alternate routes are along interstate 80. elsewhere in the east bay, storm cleanup is underway. abc7news reporter aaron joins us now. officials, their work is not done. aaron: it is no they are worried about the next storm that is coming in the

early part of next week. there are still some slick and muddy spots in the east bay. overnight when the storm was hitting its artist, there were numerous accidents around the area, prompting a lot of first responder activity. their message for the next storm is to slow it down and take it easy. creeks in the orinda hills, of water. saturated soil water in the park. >> other than some isolated flooding in the pittsburgh area, there were a lot of vehicle accidents. aaron: steve hill says the fire department responded to numerous incidents throughout the storm. hill says the whether-related. >> there were a lot of vehicle

accidents. the simple antidote is to slow down and arrive alive, as we like to say. aaron: roads were in rough shape also along 580 where severe flooding shut down the freeway for the morning commute. caltrans and chp reopened the east lanes before 1:00. hill says roadway flooding could happen with the next big storm. he says to slow down. >> your viewers to slow down aaron: new year's day, i was on top of a roof with a headlamp on, cutting a redwood tree out of a house. he is between jobs in hayward. >> you jus just like anything else.

this rain on oaks trout -- oak . crews were quick to remove the tree. this has been a constant an unusually heavy rainy season. in the north bay, highway 12 was closed for several hours due to flooding. by 5:30, it was partially ope in time for the commute. this cellphone video posted by a local resident shows a flooded street and water creeping up the porch steps. down south, this is a flooded field. this afternoon. in other parts of the state, the closure of yosemite was extended.
