that movie sweeping up seven awards on hollywood's biggest night. lara and chris, they were there covering it all for us. we'll have so much more with them coming up ahead. >> that is all coming up. we begin with the emergency action to prevent a full blown banking crisis. overnight regulators took action shutting the signature bank in new york containing the fallout from the collapse of the silicon valley bank in california. the governor is taking an extraordinary step of assuring all deposits will be paid in full. chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is on wall street, and the big question, is this enough to protect the broader banking system? >> reporter: good morning, george. it should be enough to fully protect depositors if their bank goes out of business. they'll be reimbursed under these new emergency measures. another bank failing over weekend. to reassure americans that our - banking system is safe.

house and they're scared how they're going make their first mortgage payment. >> reporter: before the emergency action she wasn't sure what to tell her employees. >> this is not just an issue that's going to start and end in the bay area. this is, you know, working families across the entire united states who are impacted by this. >> reporter: the goal behind these new measures is to avoid a new scenario they pull money from smaller banks to banks. george? we begin in our senior crrespondent mary bruce. what more do we know about the white house role? >> this was done at president biden's direction. he was touting that this move that will protect american consumers. protect small businesses and will help keep the american financial system safe. the president stressing this is not a bailout. this is not coming at the risk

of american taxpayers. they're well aware this is likely to create a political firestorm. he said this is paid for by fees on banks, not mesh taxpayers. the president is stressing he wants to take steps to ensure this doesn't happen again noting that the previous administration rolled back regulations on the banking system. the bottom line here, robin, the president wants to reassure americans they can trust the banking system and their money will be there when day need it. we turn to hollywood. it was a night to celebrate the movies and what a night it was for best picture winner, "everything everywhere all at once." lara and chris connelly were both there. they join us now from los angeles, and chris, this captivating cast was center stage. good morning.

reunion between ke huy quan and steven spielberg who gave him his first break in "indiana jones and the temple of doom" when he was just 12 years old. i was just saying to chris, it was, like, "everything everywhere all at once" happening. it was quite amazing. >> you said we have more coming up, lara. we know you got that for us. we're looking forward to that. we turn now to the new storm that is taking aim at hard-hit california on the heels of catastrophic flooding. rob marciano is in watsonville, california, for us this morning. good morning, rob. >> reporter: hey, good morning, mchael. as you know, much of the west has been hit hard with these storms, but california, this part has been really hit hard. monterey county couldn't handle all this water. the river bursting through its levee and flooding towns like this one here in watsonville. the only way in and out of these neighborhoods is by high water vehicle or by boat.

this as other nearby rivers are still rising. this morning, intense flooding forcing authorities to expand evacuation orders for areas surrounding the salinas river. >> it encompasses a large amount of residential structures, as well as commercial agriculture structures. >> reporter: as this another round of storms batter down on monterey county, officials saying that almost 200 people have been rescued so far. like in this dramatic video, showing a helicopter pulling a man to safety after his car was washed away by water from the salinas river. across the county, rescue workers navigating the flooded streets and submerged cars by boat. on this beach, firefighters attempting to rescue two surfers who became stuck on the side of a cliff. folks who live here, the evacuees, are spread out across four shelters and no telling when they'll be able to come back because another atmospheric river comes in tonight. george? >> boy, that is some scene. rob, thanks very much.

>>, at least eight people are dead after two migrant smuggling boats capsized off the coast of san diego. officials saying hazardous weather was a contributing factor. and mikaela shiffrin is now the winningest skier of all-time after winning another gold medal in the women's giant slalom at the championships. she broke the record that stood for 34 years. >> congratulations to her. amazing record to have. we're going to turn now to the murder of a podcaster and her husband who were fatally shot friday in their home in washington state. police now say the attacker first met her online and had been stalking her. kayna whitworth has the story for us. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: yeah, michael, good morning. her podcast focused on helping people find jobs in the tech industry, but authorities say one of her listeners became obsessed with her, driving some 2,000 miles to her home and climbing through a bedroom window to attack her. this morning, redmond, washington, police releasing new details into the killing of a 33-year-old software developer

and her husband who police say were brutally murdered in their home on friday by a truck driver from texas who then turned the gun on himself. >> the victim and suspect became acquainted through a chat room. it's being referred to as a podcast, but it was more of a chat room for individuals who were seeking jobs in tech. >> reporter: but police say that ramin khodakaramrezaei met zohreh sadeghi under false pretenses on the popular streaming forum clubhouse. sadeghi initially befriending the suspect thinking he was looking for a tech job, even meeting him in person, but eventually he became fixated. >> his actions and activity escalated such that the victim became concerned for her safety. numerous times throughout 2022. >> reporter: by december she reported him to police, and earlier this month she applied for a protection order. the order detailing a pattern of disturbing behavior including calling sadeghi 100 times in a

single day, crying and begging to speak to her, showing up unannounced at a convention she attended in colorado. even threatening to burn himself and the tree in front of sadeghi's house. the software developer calling the alleged stalker delusional writing, he won't let me go, and the only thing that will make all of this stop is if he killed himself or died. sadeghi's death shocking her former colleagues. >> she was a very kind-hearted individual. i can't imagine anyone wanting to do any harm to her at all. it just -- it's shocking. >> reporter: now authorities also believe that the suspect was actually at the victim's home the night before the murders as well. they also say the victim's mother was there. she escaped and, george, she is the one who called 911. >> okay, kayna, thanks. we're going to get the latest now on former president trump. he's been invited to testify to a new york grand jury investigating the hush money payment to porn star stormy daniels. facing a possible indictment now

as trump's former attorney michael cohen is set to testify before the grand jury today. trump's attorney joe tacopina joins us now. joe, thanks for coming in. >> thank you, george. >> is it president going to testify? >> we have no plans to participate in that proceeding. it's a decision that still needs to be made. there's been no deadline, so we'll wait and see. >> you have met -- you and other attorneys have met with the prosecutors? >> the terrific lawyer is leading the charge in this case, and she's met with the prosecutors. >> you expect an indictment? >> i expect justice to prevail, and if that's the case, george, there shouldn't be an indictment. this case is outrageous really. there should be a healthy dose of disgust from the bar, the legal community, prosecutors, defense lawyers alike. it's not what we do. this is not what we do. we are distorting laws to try and bag president trump. i don't know if it's because he's leading in all the polls. i don't know what it is, but clearly this prosecutor and this prosecutor's office has made an agenda of trying to get him.

they have scoured his personal life and business life for seven years to try to find something. >> this case is pretty well-known, though. there are simple yes or no questions at the heart of the case. i'll put them up on the board right there. number one, did trump authorize the payment to stormy daniels? number two, was the payment properly recorded? number three, was it connected to the election? let's take all three in turn. number one. >> we have to start and end with number three. >> let's answer number one first. >> it's not directly related. >> did trump authorize the payment? >> it's not directly related. >> did trump authorize the payment? >> it's not directly related. it's regardless -- >> we'll get to that. >> let's assume he did. >> he's admitted he did. so the answer to that is yes. >> let's assume he did. this was a plain extortion, and i don't know since when we decided to start prosecuting extortion victims. he's vehemently denied this affair, but he had to pay money because there was going to be an allegation that was going to be publicly embarrass him regardless of the campaign.

the campaign finance laws are very clear. you cannot have something that's even primarily related to the campaign to be considered finance law. >> he did direct the payment be made. number two, the second important question is, was it properly noted in the trump organization records or was there a false record made saying this was legal representation? >> there was absolutely no false record made. to my knowledge there was no false records made. >> to your knowledge. so you're not sure. >> i wasn't there at the time, but my understanding of these facts is clearly there was no false record made. >> you would acknowledge if there was a false record made, that's a crime, a misdemeanor. correct? >> i wouldn't acknowledge that was made -- >> if it were made, it's a crime. it's a misdemeanor. >> it depends in what context. i could record something in my personal checkbook that says i bought something for personal use or whatever. as long as there's no tax ramifications or campaign ramifications, it's not a crime. whatever i do in a personal setting is different. there has to be a nexus here to the campaign finance and the campaign finance laws are very clear, george. very, very clear. any legal scholar, including

former members of the federal election committee have said there is no crime here. there is absolutely no crime, and we should not be going down a road -- >> michael cohen went to jail for this crime. >> michael cohen went to jail because he was a liar, convicted perjurer. on a lot of things. he pled guilty to something that wasn't a crime. many legal scholars have opined. there is no nexus to any payment -- extortion payment to being -- >> that gets to the final third question which is the most important one as you identify was this connected to the election, and the payment was made just days before the election. i assume that in addition to the testimony from michael cohen, you're going to have testimony from others suggesting that, in fact, it was connected to the election. the president was making this payment so this wouldn't come out before the ele >> so there's a crucial ctn. distinction here, george.

>> i'm the editor for charles. >> reporter: and all share an incredible gift, being taught by charles reynoso who empowers young filmmakers to become cinema's next great storytellers. >> and cut to this one. >> charles would tell me, these are the stories you're passionate about. he would help me realize these are the stories i want to tell. >> reporter: over 1,400 students have come to reel works, a program that pairs them with mentors in the film industry, coming from low income homes. >> the students are learning here, it's not only filmmaking but they're able to have a safe space with community. >> one of the main reasons why i became a photographer was because he gave me that one shot and i wouldn't be here without opportunities given to me by charles. >> just like that. who wants to go first? >> reporter: charles is the director of education at reel works and makes sure every kid sees their potential behind the camera and beyond. >> if i didn't have charles, i don't think i would be as confident as a filmmaker.
