what a day it was. the level to storm on our exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale was intense. tonight, full team coverage to assess the damage in the work needed to rebuild. we want to begin with j.r. stone. the shelter-in-place order is lifted after a fallen glass scare in san francisco. reporter: that was taken off this afternoon. i spoke with workers inside the building. many of whom told me they don't remember a day with wind like this. >> its glass. reporter: glass falling as wind gusts intensified tuesday in the financial district of san francisco. this glass falling from 555 california, formerly the bank of america center. >> i saw someone crossing the crosswalk. it hit 15 feet ahead. they got lucky. reporter: he shot this video of

glass falling from the skyscraper from his nearby office just before 2:00 tuesday. in the moments before the glass fell, he recorded some of the windows actually shaking due to the windy conditions. a short time later, the other glass fell from above. >> it's cracking. more is falling. yeah. watch out. backup here get back up. reporter: one window completely broke on the 43rd floor. another cracked. those inside 555 california say it was windy. >> i think it was the windiest i've ever seen it. >> the building was shaking a little bit. >> it was windy. the windows were creaking. maybe you will hear the windows crack a little bit. it was constant all day today. >> the best way to describe it would possibly be just an office outside the airport.

you could hear the wind rattling . it sounded like a jet was taking off. reporter: it was so windy when firefighters arrived on scene, they had to tightly secure their helmets so they wouldn't blow off. no one was hurt but emergency crews blocked off all nearby streets in case more glass fell. investigators believe the wind was to blame but say it's unclear if the draft blew out the window or an actual item hit it. >> there's no way to tell if a block hit the window or an article hit the window. we've heard reports of people seeing things flying through san francisco. >> a lot of our windows on the outside were still getting hit with debris, rocks. it was rattling. it was scary. reporter: firefighters tell me the window broke out in an empty area that was under renovation. as for work on wednesday, it's back to the grind. the building is open and streets are open. i spoke with some who told me

they may go remote on wednesday. j.r. stone, abc7news. ama: thank you. on the peninsula, a fallen tree almost hit a van as it drove past. this was in the brentwood neighborhood of south san francisco today. fortunately, the tree didn't hit anything as it came down. let's go now to sandhya patel with a peek at our forecast tonight. what a day it was. sandhya: fierce and violent wind today. thankfully things have quieted down quite a bit. let me show you live pictures from our tower cameras. locally, it is calm. zephyr cove, the snow is coming down. golden gate bridge tonight. here's a look at the peak wind gusts. lost gado set 88. sfo at 74. spring valley at 72. atweeneyrie.. at mount diablo but nowhere near the strength of earlier. as we check out the wind, a

little breezy at 5:00 along the coast. it's going to be a quieter day. live doppler 7. the atmospheric river drenched the bay area. it's now dumping snow in the sierra. we have a flood watch in effect until tomorrow morning. i will be back with a look at the break that's ahead. ama: we look forward to that. thank you. to the east bay where heavy wind caused problems for hours, like this in pleasanton. a tree fell, destroying part of the church. anser hassan is live, hearing from neighbors who sought happen and one woman who was inside of the -- at the time. reporter: that's right. three massive trees fell in a three block radius just here in pleasanton. this tree because the most damage. ripped up from its roots, crushing the church, landing in the neighbors yard. >> all my god. the tree. oh my god. reporter: it took just seconds

and the side of this church was crushed by a falling tree. >> the building shook a little. the other secretary was in there with me. i said, something is going on. we have to get out of here. reporter: carol was upstairs next to the part of the church that collapse. they rushed out and saw this. >> wow. look at us. wow. reporter: she went out to get video of the strong wind, not expecting to see this. >> i took the video. i realized that i needed to run across the street and make sure everyone was ok, especially my neighbors. reporter: that neighbor was jeff meyer. part of the tree fell on his house. he says he's thankful no one was home and no one was hurt. >> i think the real warning for everybody is just, big trees are beautiful. you have to be really careful. you have to maintain them well. reporter: more issues related to wind.

on i-5 80, a big rig flipped over on the san rafael bridge due to wind. causing injuries and shutting down the freeway. >> we've been very busy with a lot of incidents in a short amount of time. reporter: the fire protection district says they had an unprecedented day dealing with wind which reached up to 70 miles per hour in some areas. so busy that they had to call up iidents.t do to help us manage public safety so we could free up firefighters for more critical incidents. it was an unusual afternoon. reporter: in concord, the wind toppled over three small planes. no reports of injuries and no assessment of the damage. for residents in areas with strong winds, stay home. >> there's also the high wind itself that can make driving very hazardous. great night to stay home. reporter: the wind has died down.

the national weather service protects winds to be 10 to 20 miles per hour overnight and about the same for the morning commute. abc7news. ama: thank you. nothing but the same today in the south bay. the wind was relentless. a big redwood tree fell onto the roof of an elementary school in los gatos, injuring a little girl. lauren martinez is there right now with that story. lauren? reporter: quite this care for students and staff here at oak avenue school. the outcome could have been much worse. we are told the student who was taken to stanford medical center with her parents is expected to be ok. a student suffered a minor head injury after this redwood tree fell on her elementary school classroom. staff at oak avenue school said it happened at 12:30 during lunchtime. inside the classroom were second and third grade students and a teacher. >> she's doing ok, shaken up but ok but she wanted to be here to support the kids.

reporter: griffin said after student safely evacuated, they continued the rest of the school day. >> really thankful that we had this outcome. reporter: parents said they are thankful. >> scary. it's a crazy day today. we had a power outage at our home as well. reporter: the wind knocked several large trees down in the nearby neighborhood. this tree was off trumann and kingston court. a few doors down, this tree caused minor damage to the roof and the homeowners car. >> eventually, it gave and just fell on the fence and brought the fence down with it. reporter: she saw the city tree fall into her yard. she's been in contact with the city for repairs. >> obviously for reimbursement of all the expenses and quick cleanup because this is a security issue now. i don't feel safe being open to the street now. reporter: back here at the school, staff members tell me that the student is expected to

return by the end of the week. lauren martinez, abc7news. ama: i'm glad they will be ok. in the east bay, even more trees fell onto a school building in pittsburgh. a young girl was trapped in a restroom as a result. contra costa fire cut tree debris away to get her out. three trees fell at the learning center on civic drive which was in the middle of its afterschool program. another employee was hit by a tree branch and was taken to the hospital. one woman was trapped in her car when part of a branch fell. >> idiot with a big bang. it scared me enough that all my insides just twisted. ama: there were 20 other children and staff in that building. they were all ok. a tree fell and damaged a fire truck today at ygnacio valley road and wicket. the contra costa county for our -- fire truck was heading to reports of downed wires when the tree crashed on top of it.

three firefighters were evaluated but were not hurt. a big factor with this storm right now is still the mass power did that power outages. nearly 300,000 customers were left without power. let's take a look now at pg&e's live outage map. 200,000 customers are still in the dark. we got that update minutes ago. you see a huge portion of that along the peninsula and los altos hills. pg&e did its best to prepare for the latest storm. >> so that's why we brought them from elsewhere to this area, to make sure we are able to respond. certainly there will be customers who may be out longer than what we would typically like to see. reporter: -- ama: get extra batteries for your flashlights, have a big cooler for any food you need to refrigerate. pg&e is asking for your patience. it may be a while before perp -- full power is restored. if you are wondering how much rain we've had in the bay area,

a few hours ago as police had to close all of the eastbound lanes to collect evidence. sfpd said it all started a 6:00 when multiple shots were fired from a car near buchanan street. the chase started when officers found a matching car. police were able to detain several of the people who were in the car when they tried running onto the bridge. now to the fallout from the collapse of silicon valley bank. one of the fbi's early focuses will be searching for signs of insider trading. investigators will give a close look into whether any of the banks senior leadership got unusual bonuses or sold stocks in the lease leading -- days leading up to the collapse. investigations are underway into the failures of silicon valley and signature banks. the federal reserve is preparing for next week's meeting to possibly change federal interest rates. it's expected to consider these recent events in its decision. president biden announced a new

and big -- executive order on gunter -- gun control. the biden administration order will build on nine different initiatives, some of those including moving to impose universal background checks, increasing awareness of red flag laws to stop gun sales to certain people, and improving support for gun violence survivors. biden called on congress to do more beyond the scope of his order. >> let's finish the job. ban assault weapons, do it now. enough. do something. do something big. ama: the president announced the legislation in monterey park, the sight of january's mass shooting that killed 11 people and injured nine during the lunar new year celebration. new developments in the city of san francisco's debate over reparations payments for the black community. several supervisors have expressed their support. the african-american reparations advisory board presented a draft

report that includes more than 100 recommendations to repair the harms done to the black community in san francisco over decades. the majority of the recommendations or policies to correct injustices like closing the wealth gap, addressing infant mortality rates, and reducing mass incarceration. there's a recommendation of a one time lump sum payment of $5 million to those who qualify. tonight was an initial discussion. the reparations committee will release a final report in june with an expected decision then. now back to our storm watch coverage. take a look at these photos from the chp in placerville. an officer heading to a call about a single had himself sinking into a larger one. the officer started to feel the road give way beneath his patrol car. luckily he was not injured in the chp was able to get that vehicle out safely. a dramatic rescue in sonoma

county today. three people had to be pulled to safety after trying to drive through floodwaters. their van stalled after driving just a few yards into the flooded area on armstrong woods road. river road was hit with multiple mudslides on top of heavy rain throughout sonoma county today. it's been quite the day. we've seen so much intense intensity from the wind, the rain. i don't know what to make of it anymore. sandhya: this has been one atmospheric river that did its damage with the drenching rain earlier today and this strong, gusty, powerful wind that hit the bay area. things are quieting down. the atmospheric river has shifted into southern california. so we are actually in a break in terms of the rain, as you will notice here. lingering clouds. there is still concerns. sonoma county under a flood warning as the runoff continues.

this is going until 9:00 tomorrow. the river near river mile, there's a flood warning until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. so flooding is still a threat. chittenden, the flood warning is going until 9:00 in the evening on friday. so we are not completely done with the residual effects. as we take a look at the storm reports across the region, numerous reports of flooding, wind damage, gusty wind. the rainfall, how about over four inches in the santa cruz mountains there? 9/10 in san francisco. more than two inches in santa rosa. concord at 50. you had to really be in the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains to get less. that is san jose and livermore. it's coming down in the mountains. this is africa where it is snowing right now. at lake level, they are getting
