of santa cruz to the east bay. >> we begin with sandhya patel for details of the conditions outside right now. >> those winds are fears right now, that's take a look at live doppler 7, that area of low pressure rapidly intensifying just off of the coast and to continue -- winds continue to remain strong. los gatos is already over 80 miles per hour, mount diablo, -- mile-per-hour guests, as that low pressure has been bombing off our coast, those winds have been powerful and damaging. we do have a high wind warning from the cemetery coast to the santa cruz coastline as we look at other parts of the bay area from solano county down towards the south bay, we have wind advisories, just between 50-70 miles per hour. those advisories and warnings up until 9:00 tonight. we go hour-by-hour, 6:00 this evening, winds so strong, and still gusty, over 50 miles per

hour in oakland, and at 11 p.m., winds will begin to ease as the low-pressure weekends and pulls away from the bay area. tomorrow morning, much calmer conditions, and as we head towards tomorrow evening, a little breezy on the coast but not nearly as intense. as we check out live doppler 7 right now, notice all the lightning strikes that are right around to the east of this area of low pressure. we are tracking some downpours across the region from portola valley to los osos mountain view wasokloe bay, we are seeing the rain from santa cruz all the way towards the santa cruz mountains and about hamilton, getting still we expected. floods -- flood advisories are all the way down to the south bay, and parts of the north bay as you check out the hourly forecast, you will notice the strong level 3 storm will continue to produce some downpours along with those gusting winds and snow showers over the higher terrain. i will be back to let you know

when we will finally get a break and get a chance to dry out after the storm. coming right up. >> thank you very much. we have tragic news out of san mateo county, unfortunately one person is dead after entry fell on a moving vehicle on alpine road and portola valley this afternoon. this incident happened near the 280 on-ramp, emergency crews were attempting to remove the victim when more trees came crashing down. chp officials say the person was on their way home from work. >> our best advice on a day like this, the roads so wet and the ground so saturated and the wind being the way it is, today is a day to not drive. but people had to go to and from work, and it is something you cannot avoid. today is not a day to drive. >> alpine road is closed in both directions as crews to work trees -- work to remove trees and vehicles. >> another treat came crashing down on multiple vehicles in new work.

it had to people stuck inside a truck, and they were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. one of the victims suffered minor injuries. >> new information on this afternoon's derailment of an amtrak train in contra costa county, we are told to train with 55 people on board hit a tree and derailed about half a mile east of port coushatta, between crockett and martinez. no one was hurt, and all the passengers were taken to the martinez station. so far, no word from amtrak. we are still looking to figure out which train this was. several travel the slide, including the coast starlight and the capital corridor train. >> the evening commute came to a grinding halt for people heading east on the bay bridge. a live look from our sotheby's drama as you are taking a look here. you can see traffic is at a standstill. -- our south beach cameras you are taking a look here. you can see traffic is at a standstill. a truck ended up on its side on the bridge just before treasure

island. that shows us the on ramp to the bridge, you can see that long line of cars there, just inching along. thought i saw maybe a fire truck coming, but it is hard to see. here you see on the side there, that big rig. chp tweeted these photos just now of the truck, not sure if heavy winds are to blame for knocking it over, but chp urges anyone heading east to avoid the bay bridge at this time. the powerful wind also brought destruction to the coast, especially in santa cruz. that is where we find dustin dorsey, live at the ocean. dustin how is it looking? >> it is strong winds and heavy rains out here, i have covered a hurricane myself and this is the closest to i have seen those hurricane-like conditions here on the west coast before, you know, people came far and wide today to check out the show that mother nature put on. >> take a listen to the sounds of the ocean.

winds absolutely ripping along the coast of santa cruz at westcliff, street shines tgakin -- street signs shaking, birds flying completely still. a sight to see for tourists far and wide. but if you got caught looking at the incredible waves were too long, -- for too long, you would get a sharp taste of saltwater. it's crazy because they are so big. >> there cool and they hit the clip -- cliff and it's kinda like/mountain. >> it feels invigorating, and lively, and it gives you a lot of respect for mother nature out here, even if this is,. we would not want to be out there on the boat. >> the coastline quickly turned to concern. santa cruz came under a thunderstorm warning due to destructive winds up to 80 miles per hour. county officials are right about the damage it would cause. >> that is our main concern because we have saturated ground throughout the county and so when we see these winds pick up

and not over trays, that takes out roads and when the trees come down that takes outliers and causes power outages. >> power was out in dear state park. outage maps showed hundreds-thousands of people out of power. the fear trees falling down proved to be a valid fear as well. >> we drove up and we were like oh my goodness. >> gregory griffin was not surprised to find a massive cypress street down. one side of the road was completely blocked to oncoming traffic. he watched as a second tree came crashing down moments later, crushing this previous and injuring the driver inside. >> we are safe here now. i live right here and i have been watching this tree for the past few storms as it has been just going and listing, and then the roots of it just like even, the ground has been like this. he is -- was lucky to be alive. >> we are happy to report that driver was able to walk away

from the scene of that crash. that does not mean that the risks here in santa cruz are any lower. the wind is expected -- the warning said today that winds could get up to 80 miles per hour. it's best to avoid this area until things die down. live in santa cruz, dustin dorsey, abc 7 news. >> 80 miles per hour, dustin, think as much. you can understand with that kind of wind white this was showing on this power outage map, green means oranges 500 to 5000, you can see a number of orange dots there, red means there are more than 5000, and a couple of those. it's a couple -- the latest update at 4:00, pgd says more than 4000 people have lost lecture city. >> a live look from the

international airport where things are a mess because of the weather, or than 300 flights in and out have been delayed today. 30 flights have been canceled so far, as always, if you are flying out of sfo, check for your airline first. >> super saturated soil and the runoff creating big problems in the east bay, including the closure of several lanes. there are also regional parks that remain closed. leslie brinkley is life from the trailhead in lafayette, that is, like so many others, closed. >> it's miserable out her the wind blowing the rain sideways, you can feel the temperature dropping, i'm here along pleasant hill road, just watching the water at the mud flow off this hillside. the park and the trail here closed. we drove up and over the past today to get to the spot where interstate 580 has some lanes shut down. here's a look. >> we lost two lanes on 58 a,

heading eastbound towards altamont pass in livermore. significant rainfall has come down and it has damaged a retaining wall, about 250 feet has to be replaced. it also cost a crack on the mainline freeway, so we can't have tracks running over that part of the freeway. >> tube eastbound lanes on flynn road are close in an area with few viable detours, only two lanes of traffic are open on 580, which is causing significant delays. >> caltrans says this collapse has gotten worse today. as the erosion and as the retaining wall slides down the hill. they are worried about the rest of the freeway. a team of engineers is analyzing the damage and there are concerns more lanes could be compromised. so what is next? help with traffic flow. >> the first chance with a little bit of sun we will read strike the lanes on the mainline and get another land back. just pushing it to the median.

embarcadero with the truck is causing a lot of backup along the street level. look at the scene going behind me on embarcadero. we have been seeing more and more cars coming down the street in the back of getting. of course it is russia which is heading to this problem. but folks are really two into avoid the bay ridge at all costs. we have had people as a ghost if it is open and went with daschle open, and folks are really two into avoid the bay bridge. i also want to show you this water right here jaime. i don't know if you can see how treacherous some of these waves are, the swells have been going over the bay area here for at least a couple of hours now, and folks are stopping, taking photographs, but it really is nasty out here. and finally i will show you guys what we can see from our vantage point on the ground of the bay bridge over there. you can see traffic is slowly, slowly crawling along as you

it has been a very windy evening commute, not just the lanes, but also the rain. -- the wind but also the rain. 74 degrees at the oakland airport, -- miles per hour at the oakland airport. even palo alto 59 mile per hour winds. strong winds continued, mount diablo, 71 mile per hour's, lower elevations, you are still dealing with those powerful winds as that area of low pressure spins off the coast. oakland 59 miles per hour. there is the area of low pressure that rapidly deepened and that is why we have been seeing those strong, gusty winds. you also notice lightning strikes to the east. we won't rule out a thunderstorm or two in the bay area, bay, pleasanton, foothill road, light to moderate showers as we look around pescadero, heading into the south bay.

as resume around here into street-level radar, san jose, lighter rainfall and right now. and then dew point and at this picture here, storm reports, have -- there have been numeral -- numerous reports. we are talking about attentional funnel clouds, flooding, high sustained winds, something we are watching here. 40's and 50's on our storm impact scale. this is a strong level 3 storm through tonight, strong damaging winds, downed trees, power outages, downpours with a thunder chance. we go hour-by-hour here, 6:00, you will notice light-moderate rain across the region, at 9:00, mount hamilton, you see that high elevation snow mixing in with the rain. midnight tonight, widespread, light-moderate rain, that continues until 5:00. at 9:00, it becomes lighter in intensity, and does diminish. let's take a look at the

rainfall totals. the northern part of our viewing area, far less, attentive and its maybe. but you look in the santa cruz mountains at they are getting hammered and you will see more rain come up than two inches the sierra nevada, winter weather tomorrow, 8-16 feet in the piece. your morning temperatures in the 40's, afternoon highs will notice -- you will notice those temperatures are in the 50's with scattered showers continuing through wednesday. here is what i need to focus on. on the seven-day, we have not only a level one for tomorrow with scattered showers, but like winds, spotty showers possible on thursday, chills settling in for friday morning, then we go with a dry couple of days ahead before our next storm comes in. monday evening going into tuesday, right now it is a level one, i do want to draw your attention to the area of low

pressure. that will continue to weaken and it will continue to fill in as it slides away from the bay area, later on today until then you will notice that southern california also getting hammered with not just the strong winds but the wet windy weather. panning around here, that area of low pressure is something that has not been seen at least in my decades of my career here, just off the coast of the bay area, i have not seen anything like this, locally. it looks like a hurricane i, rapidly deepening what we call psychogenesis, something we should watch carefully. stay off the roads if you can, not only wet but powerful winds. >> i've never seen anything like that either. what causes that kind of the weird pattern to develop?

>> an area of merging with another low and deepening off the coast line causes central pressure to drop in at 24 hour. , and makes those strong southeasterly winds. there was a high warning for a reason, and just because you are not under a wind advisory does not mean you will not be impacted by either the rain or the wind. dan and alma, one of the things to remember is that the ground is so soaked and saturated that when you get gusts like this, all it takes is a little wind to topple trees, to cause outages, and so, this is impacting a lot of people. it's not just a localized thing for a few people. we need to keep that in mind and definitely need to stay aware as we go into the next few more hours. one thing to remind people is that if they are in their homes, and they have multiple stories tuesday on the lower level of their home. >> no lo -- wonder you said it

was like a hurricane, with the dramatic pressure dropping. thanks very much. >> joining us now is chp officer mark andrews with the crash that is causing so much trouble. can you hear us ok? >> perfect, thank you. can you give us the latest situation on the bridge? >> we currently have four of the eastbound traffic lanes blocked, verse 2-5, originally 1-4, and now traffic will pass in the number one fast lane to that location. >> any injuries at all, and when do you expect traffic to be fully flowing? >> the driver from the vehicle, a good samaritan picked him up and took him to a local hospital with suspected injuries. no other vehicles were involved in the collision. as far as traffic, it will be

gridlocked for some time, as it will be a delight to get emergency equipment up to that location in order to upright the big rake and remove it from the scene. >> doing know what caused this, a lot of people are concerned about the weather and the impact that will have on drivers and roadways, any idea what happened? >> greek suspect high winds were a contributing factor to the big rake. -- overturning on inside. >> it was howling, and i was on the upper deck. interesting on the lower deck that this would happen. so it sounds like it will be several hours before things are sorted out. what kind of equipment has to be brought into operate a like that? -- a truck like that? >> we will have to get t t-rex for that, and with the
