>> building a better bay area. moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. reggie: we are now on the tail end of the wet and extremely windy storm. live doppler 7 still showing a pretty active scene. thousands remain without power. many are waking up to do with lots of damage. kumasi: in the high winds had deadly consequences. trees crashed down into several cars, killing two people and injuring others. reggie: traffic taking a major hit. an overturned big greek caused a huge backup -- an overturned big rig caused a huge backup. kumasi: the wind whipping up strong swells causing barges to crash into the 3rd street bridge. the storm yesterday was the strongest ever recorded for the month of march in the bay area and we all felt that no matter where we were. it is wednesday, march 22. reggie: what a wild day.

i am glad that is in the past. drew: to say it was unprecedented is not an understatement. we've never felt a storm that strong in terms of pressure before. we had winds gusting 60 to 90 miles an hour. the storm is still giving us rain this morning. the winds have weakened and moved out. live doppler 7, light to moderate rain. still residual effects of rain overnight. of flood advisory is in effect for the bay shoreline. our smaller streams and are having issues with water flooding there's. is the same story in the santa cruz mountains. thankfully the wind that was so strong yesterday, that is not the case this morning. they are light and they will remain light. it is a level one this morning on the tail end of that strong storm.

the biggest issue is going to be slick travel this morning. the roads are wet. at extra time to your commute. the exploratorium camera, it is wet. and i slid chance of showers later this afternoon. for the most part it is a chilly and cloudy day with temperatures in the 50's. we take a closer look at your day and the next chance of rain coming up in a few minutes. reggie: today is mostly about cleaning up a huge mess. take a look at videos showing a mudslide in edgewood city just east of i 280. that road is now blocked off to traffic. we do not know when it will reopen. this latest storm had a path so wide you could see it from space. here is the satellite view as that storm was swirling over us, the winds lashing the bay area. kumasi: with the winds later -- brought major power

outages across the bay area. customers will be busy. here is the current outage map. most of the outages concentrated in san francisco and the south bay and of the peninsula as well. at its peak yesterday the number was close to 200,000 customers in the dark and the same powerful wide brought down a lot of trees across the bay area. abc seven news reporter joining us from san mateo county on cleanup. >> this morning it was a wet drive into san mateo county. i was coming in from the south bay. we drove into montero, which is just a few miles away from where we are standing. it was pitch black. people still dealing with a power outage, and then another issue this morning. around 1:00 a massive tree came down, smashing three cars. video giving us a look at that ge

deame wn on threcars cedar a resident describing the tree having smashed each of those vehicles. you can imagine the force and weight of the downed tree took on so much destruction. >> just heard the bang. really loud and really close. i checked the tree in the back and i could see a shadow. the tree in the front. i open our doors and it smelled like a christmas tree outside our windows. >> these back-to-back storms have saturated soils and yesterday's powerful wind did us no favor. here and around the bay area there is concern about what could happen next as these windy conditions continue. it is not as windy this morning. the rain extremely light, still he wet commute and a darker commute for those people.

something cruise will be out this morning, especially removing the massive tree. the woman told us there were five cars parked the driveway, three of them now totaled. reggie: thank you, amanda. the storm is now being blamed for two debts after people were crushed by small it -- by falling trees. a work van, tree fell and crusted on alpine drive yesterday afternoon. as crews were working to get the victim out more trees fell, crushing another car parked nearby. chp says the best advice during storms like these, stay home. >> the road so wet and the brown so saturated, today is a day to not be driving. some of these events are unpredictable. reggie: crews had to remove trees from the top of the car before they could tow it and get the victim out.

the second person who died was also in a car crushed by a tree. this happened on stanley dollar drive. the fire department says the passenger in the car died while the driver had no life-threatening injuries. kumasi: in newark a downed tree crushed multiple vehicles. two people stuck inside a truck were eventually rescued. another person had to be rescued in san francisco. look at this video. the video ended up catching on fire, but fire crews for people put out the flames. please say the driver had to be treated for injuries. reggie: scary moments on the bay bridge in the middle of the afternoon commute. you can see the back wheels of this big rig lifting off the ground. moments later the truck blew over, blocking multiple eastbound lanes. traffic spilled all the way out of the streets of san francisco.

california highway patrol says the driver of the big rig was able to get himself out. >> he picked him up to the hospital with suspected injuries. reggie: some drivers say it took two and a half hours. the heavy rain and intense wells to spill onto the street, making people rethink how they would get around. >> ferry service had to be delayed or canceled. kumasi: near oracle park the wind sent barges crashing into the historic 3rd street decks to the ballpark. reporter j.r. stone has that story. >> these barges did you damage to the 3rd street bridge but they also did damage in this area, the walkway. this light is now tilted and the

side. some of the concrete is still loose right now. this is what the calm after the storm looked like near oracle park. even after the most intense moments, the three barges could be seen grinding against the 3rd street bridge. >> it looks like their construction barges being used to ferry equipment. how they ended up in the channel, i am not sure. >> it is unclear how close the barges were to the bridge before the incredible waves and wind push them there. >> it appears the barges were banging up against the side of the bridge and the way the winds were kicking up the waves, they were just banging back-and-forth. reggie: tuesday night san francisco public works -- >> tuesday night san francisco

public works showed us where the damage was at the damage to these metal plates. one of the plates fell in the water and now there is a whole. the reason why the pedestrian walkway is closed. the bge san francisco city engineers says the bridge is safe. >> it structural members are intact so we're pretty good to go. it will stay up. most of the damage was secondary. >> car lanes wer the bridge while pedestrian lanes were closed. after the weather clears they will do a full assessment and use boats to go under the bridge. j.r. stone, abc norm seven news -- j.r. stone, abc 7 news. drew: our storm is still swirling off of our coastline. the winds have calmed down but

still defining areas of light to moderate rain. we have a flood advisory. please be aware of that. hydroplaning is a concern, especially while it is dark. in the santa cruz mountains more moderate rain into flood advisory is in effect. take a look at the temperatures as you have a wind gust flowing my umbrella around. we will find numbers in the 40. i have full doppler. a strong storm is still whirling off our coastline, creating the lane. it will pull to the south as the morning goes on, taking the rain with it. here is future whether. we will have the showers for the entire morning commute. as we head into the afternoon, the showers become isolated and a lot of temperatures below average, stuck in the 50's. numbers barely topping out in the upper 50's later on this afternoon, and looking at the

three day forecast, we will keep the chance of isolated showers in the forecast. by friday we will stay dry and we will stay dry for the weekend. another storm is lingering next week. we will take a look at that with the seven-day forecast in nine minutes. let's check in with jobina for traffic. jobina: we are starting up with a sig alert. can see the impacted area. we have lanes shut down in both directions which is why you see this purple highlighted on westbound 84. the backup is really extending. be aware to avoid this area entirely. the chp is telling us there is a crash involving a semi-so it is a large tanker. the richmond for all of our major bridges across the bay area, we have wind advisories issued for all the bridges and the altamont pass.

attacking congresswoman nancy pelosi's husband is expected in work. today's hearing was continued from last week after the prosecution and defense said they needed more time to go to evidence. he is charged with breaking into the pelosi's san francco home in october and attacking paul pelosi with a hammer. he faces state and federal charges. it is not clear which case will go to trial first. kumasi: all eyes on manhattan where an expected indictment against former president trump could come as soon as today. the grand jury is reconvening this morning. this happening as their new developments in a different investigation into trump. jobina: a federal judge is asking for more testimony from trump's lawyers according -- and his handling of classified documents. the judge wrote that the special counsel's office has presented compelling evidence that trump knowingly and deliberately misled his own attorneys about

his retention of classified documents after leaving office. he allegedly told them in june that he turned over the documents. two months later federal agents found more than 100 additional documents marked classified at trump's florida home. trump has maintained t did nothing wrong. the revelation comes as we wait to see if the grand jury will indict trump in another case where he is accused of paying hush money to stormy daniels. there is beefed-up security in new york and washington, d.c. in case of any protests following that possible indictment. kumasi: groups of supporters gathered to date near president mar-a-lago estate. many had to park in west palm beach and walked over to mar-a-lago to show their support. >> all i know is he can see on video that he has people who love him and we are not deceived by the media and not put off by what we hear, we still believe in him. >> i refused to surrender on my

knees. i will die on my feet. kumasi: meanwhile the palm beach police officers in the u.s. secret service are preparing for possible protest. reggie: a downed tree is to blame for a train to rail meant. and eastbound train dr yesterday afternoon between crockett and martinez. none of the 55 passengers was hurt. it led to major delays between the bay area in sacramento. caltrans says it could take weeks to prevent a temporary fix on eastbound on the way to the altamont pass. the rain undermined a section of retaining wall next to the freeway. the erosion has also caused a crack on the freeway, forcing the closure of two lanes, leaving only does lanes open to traffic. >> the first chance we

will re-stripe the lanes on the mainline and get another lane back. we will push into the median and that will help relieve some of the congestion. reggie: caltrans says a temporary fix would include the addition of piles to prop up the lanes. kumasi: because of the storm, would state park, alcatraz, and the state zoo will be closed. the zoo says if you have reservation a refund process will happen three to four weeks from now. you can find all that on our website. a full list of storm updates. one of the top things that abc 7 news.com. i am still experienced yesterday. did i get transported back to florida, is there a hurricane outside. the way the wind felt, i was not expecting that.

it makes sense because it is historic. reggie: i was involved in absolute chaos outside and then 90 seconds later it was sunny. it was completely wild. drew: hurricane, but they are very different storms. a hurricane thrives on tropical ocean water. our storm, which is known as the cyclone, thrives off of warm and cold air clashing together, but it is fair to say no one has lived through that strong storm in march. here is live doppler 7. the national weather service has now told us we set a record for the month of march. the previous record, when we measure storms by their pressure , it was 990 millibars. yesterday storm surpassed that with a lower pressure of 984.4 millibars. i know that is a lot of jargon,

but that means the storm was so strong, we have never measured one like that in the month of march before. you felt that in the form of wind and we still have rain. the center of pressure is still anchored off our shoreline this morning. however it is going to move to the south as the morning goes on and take this rain with it. the winds have already weakened. as soon as this tomb -- as soon as the storm moved on shore, when reggie saw the blue skies, that was the center of the storm moving on shore. as it did the winds weakened. winds are less than 20 miles an hour but it is still breezy. scattered showers in the forecast this morning before they pull away in the afternoon. a lot of cloud cover will stay with us. additional rainfall. the issue is the roads are wet. we have a lot of debris because of falling trees. please be careful this morning as it is still dark. we will find temperatures in the

drive with caution thanks to and breezy conditions. jobina: we are following a major sig alert in sonoma on westbound 84 before 680. westbound and eastbound lanes are blocked in that spot due to a major crash involving a big rig. kumasi: the pg&e outage meant -- shows 70 people waking up without power. reggie: at least two deaths are being blamed on the storm. both were killed by falling trees. kumasi: there is a lot of damage from downed trees in the peninsula. this video shows a huge tree that came down overnight. crushing several cars. reggie: gusting winds being blamed for blowing out another window at a san francisco high-rise building. the number of trees also came down around the city. roads are closed as crews are dealing with the cleanup. kumasi: and we saw some minor flooding overnight. this is in the east bay along

wildcat creek. the parking lots and roads were submerged but it does not appear to be too much damage. reggie: today the federal reserve will announce if it will raise interest rates again. it has raised rates eight times since march of last year. the most recent increase was in february. some analysts say the collapse of banks could cause the fed to hold rates steady. economists have said the fed's repeated rate hikes are an attempt to curb inflation. kumasi: tiktok ceo will promise of firewall to prevent -- to protect american users from the chinese government when he testifies tomorrow. and the testimony he says tiktok and its beijing-based parent company have never been asked to provide information to the chinese government and he says it would not comply with the request to do so. the testimony this week comes as congress and president biden

continue to consider a tiptop ban in the u.s. over privacy issues. reggie: the cdc is expressing concern over the growing threat of a drug-resistant fungal infection. new data shows the cases doubled in 2021 to nearly 1500, with a number of cases resistant to the first line treatment trip length. officials say healthy people do not usually get sick from the infection. >> the way this is usually spread is in a hospital or health care facility. we are thinking intensive care units, hospitals, nursing homes, and within that setting, people who have some type of indwelling device. that sounds complicated. things like catheters, tubes, breathing tubes. reggie: the cdc says the fungus can infect the bloodstream and even cause death by invading the blood and brain. kumasi: people experiencing homelessness will have a chance

to connect with dozens of resources in sonoma county. the county is holding a job resource fair. there will be employers, housing services, a resume workshop come and free lunch. it runs from 11:00 until 2:00. at last checked there were 3000 people experiencing homelessness. reggie: leaders in san francisco have a proposal to solve the city's homelessness crisis. leaders called on the city to reconsider a plan to end unsheltered homelessness over the next three years. it would add 2000 to 3000 shelter beds. a city report says that would come with a hefty price tag of $1.5 billion. on top of that other homeless advocates argue shelter beds would just be a band-aid, limiting any new homeless cases that arise. kumasi: a true moby dick story. how group of friends at sea survived long enough to be rescued after a whale since their boat. reggie: plus the impact all of

>> building a better bay area. moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. reggie: rain or another day on the picket line for educators and school staff in los angeles. the latest on negotiations as tens of thousands of students are out of the classroom. kumasi: a series of recent storms dropping snow on the sierra proved too much of a good thing can be a problem. the impact on businesses finding it difficult to function under all of the snow. reggie: first the strongest storm ever recorded for the month of march in the bay area. yesterday's winds causing downed trees, traffic backups, and a lot of property damage. we have survived. kumasi: we are here. we made it. reggie: barely.

kumasi: it was a lot. thankfully we are on the tail end. drew: i feel like this is the winter where we keep saying it was unprecedented. that was the case for yesterday's storm. the strongest storm in terms of pressure we ever experienced for the month of march. the pressure drop translated to the intense wins we felt. left rain this morning. live doppler 7 showing light to moderate showers. a lot of standing water on our roads. a flood advisory in effect for the bay shoreline. a similar set up for the santa cruz mountain. there is debris on the road. a lot of clean up after yesterday's storm. while it is still dark, use caution traveling. thankfully the winds are nowhere nearly as strong as they were yesterday. on the storm impact scale it is a level 1 this morning with the biggest impact being slick travel. it is wet on the rooftop camera.

the best chance for showers is this morning. later this afternoon we will see mostly cloudy skies, perhaps an isolated shower. the storm will be pulling away as the morning goes on. take a closer look at your day and show you when the next chance of rain will be in a few minutes. reggie: first second week in a rope glass fell from the sky in san francisco. powerful winds likely blew out this window from a high-rise building near sacramento in davis just a block away from the market center. the section of davis street was closed overnight. we do not know any serious injuries. last tuesday glass fell from the 45th floor from a high-rise at california street. investigators believe wind cause that window to break. people inside the building heard windows creaking and felt like the building was shaking all day long. kumasi: the powerful winds

yesterday brought major power outages. pg&e crews have been working all night to get the lights back on. we just got an update from pg&e. they tell us about 86,000 customers are in the dark, which is a lot of people but still a big improvement from the peak yesterday when 200,000 customers had no electricity. abc 7 news reported turning us from san mateo county there. amanda? amanda: for the first time this morning it has stopped raining but you can see my hair is pretty breezy where we are in san mateo county, in pacifica. not as bad as it was yesterday. it may be an explanation for what caused a tree to come down in mont terra of you miles from where we are standing. we want to give you a look at the damage. the massive tree coming down after 1:00, smashing three of five cars parked in the driveway of a family home.

one resident living inside the home says she woke up to allow bank and new a tree went down. loud and is how she described the sound. she then open the door and says it smelled like a christmas tree outside the family's windows. the family was happy to see fire officials on scene so quickly. they understand the huge inconvenience that had. >> the fact that we cannot get our cars out, we cannot get our kids to school, just trying to go through the process of trying to get the cars out or get insurance, it is a nightmare for our family, five kids to get hit with three cars lost is a big bomber. amanda: certainly. you can imagine the force and weight of that downed tree to have caused so much destruction. back to back storms have saturated soils and yesterday's wind did us no favor.

here in san mateo county there is still a lot of concern about what this continued wet weather and wind could meet. as drew mentioned the winds are not as powerful as they were yesterday. still breezy this morning in pacifica. kumasi: thank you, thank you, amanda. a driver in santa cruz was hurt after a tree came down on a previous. the driver was injured but was able to walk away. >> i had been watching this tree for the last few storms as it has been going and then the roots have been keeping, the ground has been like this. he is lucky to be alive. kumasi: santa cruz county coastline came under a thunderstorm warning yesterday because of the destructive winds up to 80 miles an hour. reggie: the strong winds brought down trees and branches in the city. multiple branches were snapped and appeared to land on some cars.

one of the branches also got caught. in lake tahoe, people are still dealing with all the snow piling up over last few weeks. now we are learning it is having a big impact on tourism. gloria rodriguez joins us with more on that. gloria: storms have dumped massive piles of snow on cabins and businesses. some are buried and others are struggling to operate. that is causing tourism to take a huge hit. many buildings in lake tahoe are covered in snow and that means customers cannot get inside restaurants, shops, and hotels. residents and business owners have been busy gaining out because -- so they can ask at their properties. the lakefront is a restaurant in tahoe city. the owner says this winter has been tougher than covid was. >> we were down 25% i

33% in february. ou.far this month we are do is month, march is usually one of the biggest ones of the year. when you look at the numbers, it is hard. gloria: the owner has been running the business since late 1980's by the storms have left ski resorts anticipating a big boost in business. the palisades tahoe resort says that had to close on multiple occasions to dig out, but that could translate to more days of business. this b resort is extending its ease into memorial day. kumasi: floods from all of the rain continued to take a toll on farmers across the state and now some people were the challenge for the agriculture industry will eventually meet higher prices at the grocery store. produce expert says some farmers had to restart planting because of all of all the floods taking over crops and the cattle ranches. before they can start planting again farmers have to avoid

outbreaks of things like salmonella or e. coli. there are also concerns about what this means for tomatoes. >> all of that has grown san joaquin valley and the sacramento valley. that will cut supplied and impact prices of tomato sauce into next year. kumasi: california grows for the 90% of all tomatoes for processed canned goods. reggie: a live concert featuring local legends. kumasi: the sap center in san jose pondering -- partnering up for donations on the concert. the proceeds from each texted -- from each ticket will aid bay area food workers. jose hernandez points out the bands long-standing community service efforts. >> we have to connect with
