windows. it happened at three downtown san francisco high-rises as well as one other building in the city. liz kreutz is live. anyone hurt by this? >> people were hit by the glass including one of our own colleagues. thankfully nobody was seriously injured but that is remarkable when you see how large sum of these pieces of glass are that fell. this is one we found here on the sidewalk. we are told the most damage happened at this building behind us where windows shattered on 19 different floors. >> i find this to be terrifying. >> after tuesday's windstorm in san francisco caused windows to shatter questions now about how and why this happened and what is being done to prevent it again. >> we need to get to the bottom of why these failures are taking place.

calling on the city to mandate comprehensive engineering reports for downtown filled eggs. it comes a week after windows shattered on the bank of america building. shards of glass came raining down onto the sidewalk. >> some of these buildings are modern buildings. some are over 50 years old. there seems to be no pattern here. > in total windows have broken at five if an downtown high rises during the recent storms including at millennium tower and salesforce east. >> this umbrella saved me. >> edwin young was one of several people walking on mission street tuesday afternoon when broken glass fell from above. not everyone had the protection of an umbrella. >> it is a very small cut an employee at abc7news was hit by a small piece of glass on the way to work. > i started feeling a stinging sensation on my hand. i looked down and it is bleeding. >> it is a miracle nobody was seriously injured or killed. >> how this

a civil engineer speculates faulty seals on the windows combined with pressure from the wind could be factors. >> maybe the seals were not in as good a condition as they should have been. or maybe not even properly set. >> today parts of the street around the buildings are blocked off. pieces of glass still seen on the ground. as for what is next with another potential storm coming next week -- what is being done to make sure our glass does not fall next week? >> i don't have an answer to that. >> who would? >> i don't think anybody has an answer to that. you can call the department of ask that question. >> the department of buildings and inspection tells us they are requiring all of the buildings to have their windows inspected and evaluated within the next 14 days. as for next week there is no specific plan but they say these are unusual incidents and focused go about their business as usual. i would say if you are down here next week be cautious because it

close the trees came to falling on some of the tents on the sidewalk. >> for such big trees they have small root systems. is it really say these trees out here? or say people around these trees? >> for the department of public works it was another intense day of removing trees throughout the city. >> we brought in contractor crews. >> an estimated 900 trees and branches over the city fell yesterday during what meteorologists are calling a bomb cyclone. unusual for this region. on some streets power in muni lines were damaged. in a few cases th trees were so large they blocked the entire street. crews from public works were assessing the damage to the 3rd street bridge near the ballpark after several industrial barges got loose slamming into the bridge. >> we know some beams have been damaged and some supports.

the wooden walkway is badly damaged. the handrail is damaged. we are not going to be raising the bridge anytime soon until we know it can be raised safely. >> the bridge opened in 1933 and recently went through extensive rehabilitation work. tommy has a boat docked nearby and came to see the damage. >> it is a blessing in disguise because if not for the walkway it would have hit the bridge. >> structural engineers will inspect the bridge tomorrow once the tide is low. >> that was leanne melendez. a falling tree was captured by a driver in san mateo county during the storm. he just missed it. others. this was on westbound 92 heading into half moon bay. oh my goodness. the driver stopped in time. the car in front of him also

escaped narrowly being hit by that tree. a military evacuation order is in place for two homes in woodside because of a mudslide. authorities issued an evacuation advisory for two dozen other homes. sac fly and has shows you how people are dealing with that situation. >> the already narrow reduced after this mudslide led to an evacuation advisory for more than 30 homes. a storm that shocked residents like donald who has lived at his home since 1964. >> we are normally sheltered. the redwood trees were flapping back and forth like sales in the wind. it was an extraordinary experience. >> it was that storm officials say led to the slide. they got word of it 5:00 in the morning wednesday when residents called for help concerned a tree was going to fall into their home.

>> they notice the tree was falling into the structure. the slight landslide got increasingly worse. we made a decision to let the residents know that it could potentially get worse. >> officials say the slide originated at one property and threatened one lower. those homes sell forced evacuations with road access threatened. sheriff's deputies went door-to-door to the other homes to advise homeowners to leave. most we spoke with did not leave but took precautions. >> i parked my truck on the others here so i could get in and out. geologists were brought in to evaluate the stability of the slide. as for the residents who stayed behind they like the rest of the bay area are looking forward to the storms and the impacts they leave behind to give way to sunshine. >> that is why i came to california. it was under the back of my mind. i was born in glasgow. >> the storms are going to continue to monitor the slide and ayhewill

>> i was running? all right. it is much comber today. everybody can breathe a sigh of relief as we take a look at live doppler 7. we still have some showers but they are not anywhere near the intensity of what we experienced yesterday. let's look at the leftover showers. in the east bay from san ramon valley boulevard to dublin shaver ranch road adding across 580 you will notice scattered showers into pleasanton 680. still somewhat roadways. in the south bay from edenvale heading across coyote monterey road across 101 you will notice it is still showery across the region. the area of low pressure that was bringing us all the active weather yesterday weakening moving south of us and we are still seeing activity across the state. the worst of it is over for us

in the bay area. we are going to take a look at the rainfall totals. impressive when you look at the moment in the santa cruz mountains. many areas getting over an inch from san francisco to oakland heading up toward santa rosa. more than two inches of rain. napa, an inch and a half paired three quarters of an inch in concord. 16 of the last 22 days have been rainy. march has been very productive to say the least. many of the days of the wet weather fell on the weekends. i will tell you this much. this weekend you get a chance to enjoy some dry weather. going in a different direction. from our kgo roof cama the clouds are stacked up. the peak gusts yesterday were 80 two miles per hour. oakland, 74. mount diablo, 75 mile per hour winds. clouds lingering as we look over the shark tank.

road. >> i could not leave montclair. i could not get down to the village to go to the store. every road was closed. for over 60 years and says he has never seen a storm like this. >> it was these powerful gusts that were amazing. it was not a constant sustained. all of a sudden you could not stand up. >> almost every corner in montclair was covered in damage. the roads were blocked off in numerous homes without power. >> all o this crash. this huge gigantic tree fell over. >> the wind on tuesday caused part of this tree to fall. branches were scattered all over the ground. jenkins says she is fortunate only damaged her deck but cleaning it up could take a while. >> no one could do anything because everybody is suffering from something with all this flooding and rain. >> with the latest storm

a few streets down from where a two-year-old boy was crushed by a tree in february. no one was injured in this accident. >> we are on a heightened state of awareness now. every crack. every wind in this neighborhood is treated like a potential tree fall. >> thousands are without power. caltrans and pg&e are working together to deenergize lines so crews can clear the road of full entries. >> it has been a maze trying to navigate the straits in the santa cruz mountains. a lot of these mountain communities we have had a lot of blocked roads and our cruise in some cases cannot access our equipment that is damaged because the trees are down. power throughout the weekend. the community is asking visitors to stay away so crews can get life moving smoothly again. >> along the san mateo they are dealing with all sorts of problems following yesterday's storm peered trees came down including at a medical center and flooding as well.
