[inaudible] ama: down in los angeles today, only the latest rarity in this wild week of weather. good evening. dan: thanks for joining us. the storm we saw in the bay area was historic in many ways. we are getting an idea of how much. ama: it hit a level three on our storm impact scale but both in how it formed and how the kind of damage we saw, it was likely once-in-a-lifetime. dan: sandhya patel has been giving us that great perspective and we will start there. a good look at it all. sandhya: this is a storm we will not soon forget. it has been record-setting. let's get to live doppler 7 and talk about what happened. area of low pressure rapidly intensified. this is taking you back in time to yesterday.
11:01 pm
this is a storm that would begin to develop and then a secondary low started to merge with it. the two combined and we saw what was known as bomb cyclone. it was a record-setting storm, the strongest march storm on record. 984 .4 millibars in terms of the pressure. that surpasses the march record of 99.2 -- 990.2. two low-pressure systems orbiting each other merged into a single storm and i can strengthen it fast which we saw do damage and multiple reports of damage from flooding to wind damage. you will notice obviously there were fatalities in southern california. montebello and carpinteria. both reporting tornadoes. one was an ef1 for montebello. one was in the f zero for carpinteria. we aren't expecting a rerun of that. it is quieter on live doppler 7. how long the break is going to

last, coming up. ama: take a look at the road in the north bay. it looks like an earthquake hit. this is redwood boulevard. marin county officials say the road has buckled due to a slide and is closed indefinitely. it does run next to 101 but the county says there's no threat to the freeway. dan: that does look like an earthquake. tonight, we take you by the numbers to try to capture the force the storm brought. first the power outages. pg&e says 500,000 families and businesses in the bay area lost power at some point yesterday. at its peak, 240,000 outages at once. pg&e says more than 38,000 customers are currently in the dark but many more than that are tired of these repeated mass outages. tim johns is here with us tonight. you've heard from a lot of frustrated people tonight. reporter: that's right. frustration is pretty high for some folks, especially in

communities up and down the peninsula. one neighbor telling me the problems from these storms have made her and her family consider moving. as the bay area cleans up after another powerful and deadly storm, for many on the peninsula the problems just won't seem to go away. >> it keeps on going. we've had power lines down, trees fell in the middle of the night, you name it. reporter: she lives with her family at the outskirts of half moon bay in an unincorporated part of san mateo county. she says ever since the big storm hit on new year's eve, the major roadway that leads from her house into town remains damage. for the past few months, she and her neighbors have had to find longer alternative routes to get anywhere. the lack of communication from officials has been a growing source of frustration. >> we didn't hear anything from the county about any update on progress or static drill -- status related to reporter: it isn't just roads. for thousands, power is still

out. many in the area have spent weeks without it since the start of the year. >> we are looking for how we can get the most customers back as quickly as possible. we are looking for customers who have been out of power for the longest amount of time. reporter: since december 31, they replaced 5000 power poles and 850 miles of wire. that's enough to go from oracle park to dodger stadium and back. >> we brought 80 extra crews for the storm into the inner bay area. that wasn't sufficient. reporter: many residents can do nothing but sit and wait, hoping that when the next storm hits things might not be as bad. >> i feel these storms have really exposed some inadequacies in png -- pg&e and the county and how it's been reporting, not advocating for constituents like ourselves. reporter: abc7news reached out to san mateo county officials

about the road leading to her house. while the repair process has begun, their best guess is that it will remain closed until october or november. tim johns, abc7news. dan: our next storm and branches came crashing down in san francisco from tuesdays storm. since new year's eve, pg&e says it has removed more than 13,000 trees across its service area that have damage the utilities infrastructure. ama: we know at least five people have died as a result of these storms, all from falling trees. tonight, a police sergeant is in the hospital after a tree came crashing onto his vehicle by lake merced. j.r. stone is following the story. reporter: tree stumps here, here, and here can be seen along san francisco's brotherhood way near s.f. state. this, one day after the trees

came down on cars. one of them being a san francisco police officer's vehicle. >> to see the tree fallen over and cars in there, it is so sad. reporter: renee couldn't tell what vehicles were under trees, only that trees had come down on cars. she didn't realize that a 16 year veteran police sergeant who was on duty had to be rescued by firefighters and is now in serious condition. >> you just think about the timing. 30 seconds before or later, he wouldn't have had that happen. it is crazy to think that. reporter: these trees that came down on brotherhood way are certainly not small. i'm six foot five. even the stump is as big as i am. >> i heard a crash. i walked down and saw the tree going across the street. i saw a car under that tree. reporter: in san francisco, hundreds of trees and branches came down on tuesday.
11:07 pm
two people were killed by falling trees including someone hit by a tree near post and poke. those we spoke with said they had never seen anything like this. >> i've lived in california most of my life. we've never -- i don't remember it being this stormy for this long. reporter: as some areas have been cleared and the sun begins to peek out, a hope that the officer hit and injured by a falling tree will be ok. >> just pray for them. think about them. they need our support. i think it's really tragic actually that a storm could cause that much damage and threaten lives. reporter: j.r. stone, abc7news. ama: the name of that san francisco officer has not yet been released. sfpd says the family is asking for privacy at this time. dan: san francisco police are investigating after a body was found in the water off pier 39.
11:08 pm
officers were called to the peer and located the body at 5:00 this evening. the body has not been identified. at this point, there are no signs of foul play but they are asking anyone with information that bite -- might be connected to the case to contact the police. ama: the wildest weather event was in los angeles. people watched in awe as a tornado touched down in the east neighborhood of montebello. >> turning to a tornado. did you see it pick up the stuff off the floor? where's that at? ama: isn't that incredible? the national weather service has rated this storm in ef1. the wind was anywhere from 86 to 110 miles per hour. this scale goes from zero to five. the wind ripped the roof off numerous buildings, damaged cars, and injured one person.
