alive after that tree fell at 5:20 a.m. this morning, smashing into that house. it woke up pretty much the entire neighborhood and trapped the family upstairs. >> it was just a crack and then a loud boom. reporter: a sound linda ross will never forget. the moment this giant 100 foot oak tree crashed into her home early friday morning. >> the first thing i was doing is screaming to my son, who was trapped in his room. i was also trapped, because the door got stuck. reporter: the family shared these pictures of the incredible damage the tree caused to the bedroom. remarkably, he was not hurt thanks to some quick thinking. >> i don't know how he lived, honestly, his room is totally destroyed, that tree is on his bed. and he just heard it and jumped out of bed. reporter: but the mother and son were trapped on the second floor of the house. >> they threw ladders, cut some holes and got the

people out. luckily no one was injured. reporter: the oak tree stood for nearly a century and linda's front yard -- in linda's front yard. parts of the oak fell into the neighbor's property, narrowly missing his house and car. >> when these trees get to be about 100 years old, they grow about a foot a year, stuff can happen. reporter: fire fighters's winter storms and record rainfall have brought down hundreds of trees. >> with the wind, power lines come down, and trees. everything is so saturated, the trees are soaking up all the water. the ground is extremely saturated. reporter: a giant crane was brought in to remove the tree and begin a very big cleanup. a very big cleanup for sure. the house is now yellow tagged, remaining limited entry is allowed. there is no heat and no power inside. linda says she will be staying with friends for a while.

the house we are told was built in the 1900's. linda says she is v today to rebuild it. cornell bernard, abc7 news. julian: amazing they are ok right now. the peninsula crews in burlingame are still dealing with huge amounts of debris from the recent storm. cal state 92 is closed in both directions so workers can remove at detor drirsdowned trees. using local streets in and around el camino real and until drive. additional closures could come next week. kristen: residents in p face a difficult task of cleaning up after a levee breach forced them to evacuate their homes and businesses, damaged in pa more than 500 people have been living in shelters. they listed the evacuation

order a day earlier than expected. but there is no potable water and the sewer system remains out of service. conditions remain unsafe, including spoiled food, bacteria and possible power outages. the state superintendent was assessing the storm damage. he visited pajaro and lakeview middle schools where he handed out gift cards to impacted students and families. a massive levee breach flooded pajaro march 10th and displaced dozens of residents. a state of emergency has been declared in 43 counties across california. there are more storms expected this month. julian: the cleanup continues from the powerful storms earlier this week. right now we are enjoying beautiful weather, and looking ahead to a beautiful weekend. kristen: that's as far as i'm going to look, sandhya. meteorologist: i don't blame you one bit. it is going to be an absolutely beautiful weekend to get outside. if you like what you are seeing outside right now, which is

the trash were taken to the hospital, their condition not known at this time. look at the aftermath left behind. hercules police say the suv was stolen. we suspect the car thief suspect and car thief was not hurt and has been arrested. kristen: story that you will see only on 7. reporter: the collision happened quickly. as we slow the video down, you can see how the pedestrian is struck and dragged a few feet, hitting a wooden barrier. jennifer conrad is a pedestrian hit by the scooter on february 18 as she was leaving this restaurant on king street across from the ballpark. >> i was coming from the restaurant to my car on the sidewalk, and i saw a scooter coming really fast, had a second to react and i moved back.

didn'n his face was like, get out of my way. reporter: conrad says immediately following the collision, she was confused and could not speak. the scooter writer tried to help her but when she asked him for his information, conrad says he took off. >> he left. people were like, don't leave. reporter: he boltedreporter: -- reporter: he bolted. >> when i said, give me your information, he saw more people coming so he left. reporter: this little rental companies have it printed on each scooter, no sidewalk riding. we found a few of them continue to break the law. police are still invested getting the accidents and they say scooter riders are at fault in more than 55% of crashes. conrad filed a police report. a few days after her accident, she had bruises on her arms and feet and suffered a broken wrist. >> i don't hate the scooter's.

i love the scooters. but just don't be rude. respect everybody. julian: today s unified school district teachers held a one-day strike with pickets at three schools and rally at city hall and district headquarters. the union did not authorize this one. some teachers from 14 schools did not work today including here at skyline high school. one of the three picket locations. teachers are asking for any or 23% raise which would bring them close to the median pay for teachers in california. according to a history teacher., the district recently countered with a 3.5% raise. >> when it's a pay our teachers more to keep good teachers in oakland. >> we don't want to stop the teaching. but we need to find a way to live. julian: we are hearing from

then he went viral before that was even a thing. he was nicknamed the cleptokitty after stealing items from his neighbors' home. sadly he passed away this month, but dustin dorsey spoke with his owners today to really remember the viral sensation. reporter: this san mateo community can once again rest at night, knowing their belongings are safe from a prolific cat burglar. but they also sleep with heavy hearts after the beloved cleptokitty dusty passed away this month a the age of 17. >> it's been hard. you expect to see him when you walk in, where he slept. you know, you'll get through it. reporter: he stole the hearts of viewers back in 2011 when our own reporter caught the cat burglar read -- red pa a camera captured the thieving kitty scouring the neighborhood

for goods, bringing back items as gifts for his guardians. >> before he started to bring stuff back, i was playing fetch with him, which i was amazed at. he's a better fetcher than the dog. [laughter] i don't know that triggered his behavior or not. reporter: as the number of items grew over the years, so, too, did dusty's popularity, getting attention from all over the world, even appearing on the david letterman and jay leno shows. dusty was loved by many, but his family became particularly close with vic lee, even making an appearance at his retirement party. vic was able to visit dusty recently one last time to say goodbye 12 years after dusty's escapades went viral. >> he would always recognize me and come over, love at first sight. you see this unique cat and you go, wow, that is a star. it was just a loving cat. reporter: he believes his spirit will still be felt by this community. dusty's guardians hope that love

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc seven news. julian: thank you for sticking with us at 4:00. san francisco police believe a 12-year-old boy is responsible for two stabbings and less than a week including one where the victim nearly died. kristen: some parents and students are asking why they were never notified about a fellow student being charged with attempted murder. dion lim has been digging into the story. she joins us out with a story you will only see on seven. reporter: this has been a challenging story to report on because there are long-standing state privacy laws in place

protecting juveniles. the lack of information about child suspects allegedly involved in violent crimes is concerning parents and community members. they are asking who is protecting us. >> i was shocked, scared, and devastated. he was mumbling that he got stabbed and did not stop the bleeding. reporter: those words are from the family of a 15-year-old boy who was violently stabbed it what san francisco police a was a random attack on this bus near union square at the afternoon of march 13. scared to talk on camera, they answer to my questions via text. >> it was shocking and devastating to hear he was stabbed without provoking anyone. reporter: most shocking, the suspect is just 12 years old. this photo is of a knife which documents the suspect allegedly through into bushes. at the 15-year-old victim nearly lost his life. >> i felt like i was having a heart attack. feeling helpless for not being

able to be there. reporter: document show the 12-year-old was apprehended a short time later and charged with attempted murder. one week prior on march 6 the boy was named in police documents and a suspect -- as a suspect in another alleges having. i discovered the suspect as a criminal history. documents reveal he was previously arrested for an alleged robbery involving a firearm and was on juvenile probation. >> i do not know what is going to happen. reporter: parents at the middle school where the suspect is a student told me as of one week after the bus stabbing they had yet to be informed by the school that the boy was booked for attempted murder. >> nobody told us. i heard it from my child. >> the school said nothing. >> they do not give out that information that much. you have to wait or dig deep for yourself to find that information. reporter: abc 7 news reach out

to the san francisco unified school district a couple times this week to see if they did notify the school community about the 12-year-old student's alleged involvement in these serious crimes. the district spokesperson said they could not talk specifically about the case due to privacy issues, adding the district as particles in place to ensure the safety of students and to communicate updates with families to support schools when an incident occurs involving a particular school community. the information blackout is not just from the school district. it extends to the juvenile criminal justice system, which is all about privacy. juvenile justice officials would not confirm if the boy was in custody because of privacy. the public defender's office could not confirm their involvement in the case, citing state laws that restrict information about juvenile cases to anyone other than relevant parties in the legal matter and prohibits dissemination to outside parties. i sat down with a san francisco district attorney who could not

go into specifics about the case because of privacy. i asked about the boy's allegedly repeated crimes. >> with our youth is different. we have to make a determination on whether somebody we seek for the youth to remain out of the home, but it is a different process. reporter: a criminal defense attorney has extensive experience with juvenile cases but is not affiliated with this stabbing incident. he said it is challenging and the criminal justice system for juveniles needs to work. >> we are popularizing crime. the culture shift is into the name of compassion remove accountability, and that is a dangerous road to walk. they are experiencing, they are exposed to more mature behaviors earlier, and i fear for them, because they do not have the emotional maturity to moderate themselves. reporter: when i asked da jenkins about the frustration shared by brass and a number of parents i spoke with, she

acknowledged the need for change. >> what is going on is not enough. it is not working. that is why we are in these situations, but there is more we can do, and i am optimistic if we come together in a way that is more innovative we will get there. i think there has to be the balance between having a consequence even into my home with my kids, there has to be a consequence, but understanding you have to exercise compassion to make sure we are helping our children mature properly and appropriately. reporter: as the 15-year-old's victim continues to grapple with what happened, they are looking to recovery. they too ask for change to a juvenile justice system so clearly broken. >> there must be better solutions from the ground up. if this could be anyone's child or family member. reporter: i spent a good amount

of time speaking to the 50-year-old stabbing victim's family. they are in a challenging position. they are trying to balance the issue of their own privacy for safety reasons, while at the same time they understood the importance of telling their story. at one went they told me one story it would not necessarily change laws in san francisco or the state, but they wanted to do what they can to help, and i am so grateful when victims decide they want to address their story to us. kristen: it is frightening. what d.a. jenkins said about there has to be consequences. that seems to be tapping into what a lot of people are saying. julian: so heartbreaking, because you see this 12-year-old has been failed by so many people. kristen: it is a chain, it is challenging, and nobody seems to have a definitive answer. julian: appreciate the reporting. kristen: in oakland, business owners are on edge after a rational burglaries in chinatown. we are learning the crime spree

includes jack london square. today a meeting was held to address security concerns. lena howland has the story. >> it is not an opportunity to be quiet. reporter: less than 24 hours after a string of eight break-ins including some caught on camera in oakland's chinatown -- >> to me it looks like a flash mob. they are organized. reporter: business owners are coming together to demand change. >> i would like to copd -- to have someone patrol a certain part of chinatown in the middle of the night. reporter: in an emergency meeting held by the oakland chinatown chamber of commerce friday morning, many business owners came with questions for police. but they did not show up after finding out it would have turned into a press conference that is according to the oakland chinatown improvement council. >> this is a failure of city

government, and our community is not protected. reporter: here in chinatown where you can see fresh locks outside of their gait, the owner tells abc 7 she is not able to reopen her business yet until oakland police response to investigate. >> we are waiting for evidence of tech to come out. that is the latest. until then, we possibly have more damages. reporter: community members like lynette say because of this, she is avoiding chinatown in the afternoons and evenings. >> i do not feel i am safe to walk around here. the police should do something to help the community. reporter: abc 7 reached out to oakland police about this issue. all they declined our interview request, in their own video statement they said they are taking steps to cut down the number of burglaries. >> controls wrath
