>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> it was terrifying to be sitting right there, 30 feet from where the tree came down, knowing that it could have been any one of those trees. liz: now, fear and frustration as some residents in menlo park says that they need to do more to protect homeowners. how they are fighting to get trees removed. thank you for joining us it is saturday, march 25. we are going to start with the weather. finally a dry weekend with more rain on the way. lisa: five to 10 degrees below average and a chilly start with a frost advisory as temperatures drop off into the upper 30's.

they could drop into the mid-30's but so far we are 42, belmont. 37, redwood city. we are looking at mid-30's in livermore with upper 30's in napa. with the wind it is a little bit stronger in some areas and that is why temperatures have not dropped so much. two to five degrees colder from the peninsula to the south bay and a frost advisory with us, probably colder for sunday morning. the next few hours we see temperatures climb into the mid and upper 50's with plenty of sunshine and then we will talk about when the next storm arrives. liz: overnight contra costa firefighters are investigating the cause of a two alarm fire at a senior housing complex. flames broke out on the second floor of this senior apartments. firefighters say that one person was treated for smoke inhalation. the damage to the unit where the

fire started is substantial and some residents are displaced. it is unclear how many. it has become a familiar scene during a never ending storm season. we saw massive trees toppling over and landing on houses and cars and some of those even turning deadly. in menlo park some residents are frustrated with the process to remove trees that are a hazard. one woman is taking matters into her own hands. >> i think what crossed my mind is what has been on my mind for 20 plus years, and that is that these trees do not belong here. >> kimberly watched as an 80 foot redwood tree came crashing down in her backyard. >> it was terrifying to be sitting there, 30 feet from where the tree came down knowing that it could have been any one of those trees. >>tswes side a8 inthe otr.

>> redwood trees are wonderful in the forest and they belong in cool and foggy climates, not in a tight urban neighborhood. >> at one point she served on the menlo park heritage tree task force to simplify the process of applying for a tree removal permit, now large trees are protected by strict city ordinances so she is creating a task force of her own. >> so i am org menlo park citizens who have the same concerns that i do, and we will take it to the city council. >> you do not have to drive far to find crews cleaning up from recent storms. during last tuesday's storm, two trees came down and shirley's backyard. >> with all of the rain it just expands and become mushy. >> she was given permits to

remove six diseased trees and she is not taking chances. after some convincing the city granted her emergency permits to get two more removed. >> let us cut it down and keep everyone safe. you want me to plant something else, i will. liz: we have an update on the san francisco police officer who was seriously hurt after a tree came down on his car while he was working. a gofundme has been launched in the goal is to raise $125,000. his family is getting closer to hitting the goal. his family says he is stable with serious injuries. a stretch of highway 84 is closed because of a landslide. as you can see, the road has buckled and caltrans says that the ground might still be moving. the highway is closed at port road. there is no estimate on when it will be repaired.

a large portion of california is route 3 -- route 3 thanks -- drought free thanks to the rain and the state is lifting some water restrictions including rescinding a campaign to drop water use. gavin newsom announced these restrictions will ease and storm after storm made this year one of the wettest on record in california following three years of the driest years on record. despite the restrictions the governor says it is the unpredictable changes that make it important to keep conserving. >> the economy, well-being and health and safety of millions of californians is at stake if we do not meet these moments and continue to maintain our vigilance. liz: he also announced an end to the level two drought contingency plan and then he said he would increase storage efforts through reservoir

storage, storm capture, and more. the dea is warning the public and parents about a deadly animal tranquilizer being mixed into fentanyl. we reported on this showing up on the streets of san francisco. a special agent tells abc 7 news reporter tara campbell that the mixture is on the rise. >> that is the thing, one pill one time can kill you. tara: brian clark is talking about fentanyl. he says that idiots being made more -- it is being made or dangerous. >> we are detecting this. tara: the point -- the potent mixture on the rise across 48 states and the bay area is no exception. >> the dea is working w san francisco police department and bay area communities to monitor this. tara: while it is more prevalent on the east coast the dea is prepaying for a search year. >> fentanyl has been the

deadliest threat that our country has faced and zaila seem -- xylocine makes it more dangerous. tara: they reporting that large portion of the fentanyl seized contains the animal tranquilizer. because it is not an opioid it cannot be reversed by naloxone. >> the public awareness of this drug and getting this out to the community can save lives. tara: and the lives of children are top of mind. >> children have been taking counterfeit pills and there are incidences of drug poisonings. we are seeing it mixed within these pills so it is a huge concern. tara: dr. anna for parents to talk openly. >> talking around the incredible lethality of fentanyl and now

that it is found in a lot of counterfeit pills. so that a child might be ingesting fenton l without rely -- fentanyl without realizing it and so much -- and it is so deadly they can die from a single dose. liz: authorities confirm a mother was killed and when boys were hurt when a suspect in a stolen suv crashed into their car during a police chase. it happened between 4th street and parker avenue. we obtained surveillance video. the police were following wanted exited off of 80 into a residential neighborhood. the stolen suv was seen crashing into the car. the mother died at the scene and both boys were taken to children's hospital. one witness was in disbelief after seeing the incident unfold. >> it was the most horrifying thing i have seen in my life, it was terrible. liz: ralph ellsworth white iii

was arrested at a nearby liquor store. appearance of a teenager shot and killed at a house party in 2020 one are suing air bnb and the property owner. the lawsuit claims property owner never got approval to do short-term rentals. the ordinance also requires short-term rental host to stay on-site during the stay. the parents believe that their son, the 17-year-old would still be alive if he and air bnb had followed the law. in the north a homeless camp is cleared after a legal battle. crews removed a dozen people from albert park. a federal judge lifted a restraining order monday and denied a request for a preliminary injunction. san rafael had numerous complaints and they are working on shelter options.

the san francisco public library is hosting a freedom to learn summit in response to an increase in book ban which aims to protect free expression. there will be workshops for high school students so they can learn skills to become that book banning an educational censorship. they say young people should have access to a broad array of materials. it is 6:10. lisa: the sun is less -- is up in less than an hour but we have temperatures dropping into the 30's. visibility with low 40's but we talk about a cool and sunny day today. the coldest day on the weekend and when the rain arrives. liz: also, businesses hope to bounce back. why shop owners in yosemites say it is the best time for people to visit. plus, stolen airpods at hear from the woman who kept tabs o

liz: turning to the story of a woman who tracked down for her airpods after two weeks after they were stolen by an employee at san francisco international airport. her determination garnered national attention and tim johns shares her remarkable story. tim gionet -- tim: good things come to those who wait but elizabeth likes to tackle her problems directly. in early march she was connecting through sfo after visiting her husband on the island of guam. she says she was getting off of her plane when she remembered she had left her jacket which had her airpods inside on her seat. after approaching staff they assured her that someone would get the jacket. and she went on her way to catch

her last flight. it was during that part of her journey that she decided to try and get some sleep. >> i just thought i would put in my ear -- my airpods and i would be fine. well, that was when i realized they were gone. tim: thanks to the app on her phone her airpods had been stolen out of her jacket. while she was in the air she was able to track them and take screenshots as they made their way around the airport. versa different terminals and on the united cargo building and then down the southbound 101 freeway. she began reaching out to various employees and deplete -- and police departments try to get our property back. after nearly two weeks of little to no assistance she was able to get them back thanks to a detective working at sfo. they had been taken by a contractor who was loading food onto the aircraft. we reached out to united sent is a statement that reads "united airlines holds our vendors the highest standards and we are

working with local authorities." words of little comfort to elizabeth. >> if united has trusted that employee on the airplane to do a job for them, then they are responsible. tim: they were eventually sent back but they arrived damaged. for her trouble united agreed to pay for a new pair and give her 5000 miles as an apology. >> that has not happened and i cannot say if it will or will not. tim: her tenacity has served her well and she hopes it can be a lesson for others to never give up hope. >> when you look at things and you look at something that is right and wrong and you ask yourself is this something happening to other people as well? tim: in san francisco, tim johns. liz: warming centers in santa clara county are open as we experience cold temperatures. seven county libraries including

the one in cupertino are open for people who need a place to stay. ouch -- outreach workers are reaching out to homeless encampments. they are open through 9:00 tomorrow morning. more than 200 -- 2000 people will spend the next weeks if not months claiming -- cleaning up after their town was overtaken by floods. now that they are back home it could be weeks before running water is safe to drink. bottled water is being brought into help families. although evacuation orders were lifted a lot of the homes are not livable and some may not be for some time. many people who saw their homes for the first time say they are filled with mud, standing water, and mold. >> we are very sad because we lost what few things we had. we worked hard to get what we have, and here it all is. liz: the levee has since been repaired.

yosemite national park is open to visitors after being shut down for severe weather. the park was closed because it was too dangerous. with the roads back open businesses are anxious to bring back clouds today -- crowds to downtown mariposa. >> we are hoping to get the public back and the people from the surrounding areas. >> we have seen days where we see four visitors come through which is abnormal. we are usually used to at least 60 to 70 people coming through the visitor center. liz: jacob polly says with all of the snow and water the summer season is expected to be one of the best. the best time to visit the park is actually right now because there are no reservation requirements. truly there is nothing more beautiful than yosemite but it seems a little bit treacherous to get there. maybe now it is clearing up with more rain and snow on the way. lisa: a couple of windows for

dry weather but then we cloud up on monday in advance of the next system. it seems like every tuesday, another storm headed our way and the highest impact is for the tuesday morning commute with wind and heavy rain. live doppler 7 right now picking up on some breezy wind and a little bit of cloud cover here and there. overall we will get into an onshore flow and the gusty northwesterly wind keeping it on the cool side. 39, mt. view and allen rock, 40. redwood city in cupertino, and mid 40's san francisco. you can see the 33 in danville. this morning and tomorrow morning temperatures drop before the sun comes up. five degrees colder in san francisco and four degrees colder than san jose. the wind has been up to keep the north bay temperatures a little

milder. you can see along the coast that is where it will be gusty with a pretty shot here and the camera shaking just a little bit. into the afternoon 30 to 40 mile an hour wind gusts along the coast. it is a chilly morning with sunny afternoons on the way. rain monday into tuesday with some flooding and downed trees as excessive rain heads our way and perhaps thunderstorms tuesday into wednesday as the system lingers. here is a look at the wind. the new time, nice and dusty on the coast. 30 miles an hour, about 20 miles an hour san francisco through later in the day and as we get towards the morning hours that is when we really see the wind to pick up. 45 miles an hour by this evening and the inland valley is about 20 to 25 miles an hour. a windy day but the skies clear through saturday into sunday,

some high clouds into monday and then the wind picks up. this is what we are anticipating late monday into tuesday. if you can work from home or delay being on the roads tuesday through wednesday it is a good idea because we could see an and should to an inch and a half of widespread rain. once the system moves through we will get the downpours afterwards. in terms of the mountains the window of opportunity this weekend into monday because by late monday we are looking at a winter storm watch turning into a winter storm warning and we are looking at the snow levels coming down. even in the bay area loki -- locally we could see some snow in mount hamilton with the highs and a breezy afternoon, 57 downtown. 59, san jose. 60 in napa and san rafael. a cold morning and a level 1 system monday.

severely injured in a ski slope can -- collision. and march madness is living up to its name. the elite eight set amid more history with no number one seeds making it to the next round. what to expect from the teams moving ahead all ahead on gma. liz: that still to come, we will talk about a story of survival. we will hear from the mother trapped inside of her home after a 100 foot tree fell through it. michael finney has a story about what is happening at the dmv. people say they are being charged late fees even though they have paid their bills. >> to be quite honest i did not believe it. michael: her ordeal began two years ago when she paid for her car registration online. everything seemed fine. weeks later she got this letter demanding payment plus late fees

and penalties. >> i thought it was a scam because i knew i had paid it. michael: the dmv notice said the electronic check she submitted was no good even though the receipt said successful payment. now she had to pay 140 eight dollars in late fees and penalties. >> i paid it, i had to get a cashiers check and go in person and i thought the issue was over. michael: the same thing happened when she renewed online again. she played -- paid by each check and got her registration and stickers that weeks letter they sent the demand for payment plus penalties saying that the check bounced. >> same thing, got the successful payment and roastery -- and received my stickers and i am being charged and astronomical late fee. michael: the dmv should have notified her right away if the check did not go through instead of waiting until she was hit with late fees. >> i cannot imagine how much

money they are pulling in with the 60% penalty. >> this was very odd and misleading and even fraudulent. michael: the same thing happened to alex who paid with an e check and the dmv sent his registration and then the shock. >> your payment actually did not go through and now you owe us a late payment fee. michael: the dmv said he owed $457 and can only pay by cashiers check and money order. emailed the payment but instead of a renewal he got a final demand for payment threatening to seize his car. >> i was scratching my head like this is ridiculous. it is a bit over-the-top to just threaten away -- to threaten to take away my car. michael: it turns out they had mistakenly entered their savings account numbers which will not generate a check. the dmv acknowledge that it system was accepting payments even if the account number was ind en -- and

then mailed out anyway as a courtesy to the customer. late fees were anything but a courtesy. >> if this were some private company i would think that they had done this on purpose. michael: after the inquiry is the dmv change to the system to flag in -- incorrect account numbers and refunded the late fees for terry and alex and several others to came to -- who came to us for yourself that's for help saying that as soon as the dmv became aware of the increase of the number of customers inconvenienced the department took action to improve the process and address customer complaints. i am michael finney, 7 on your side. liz: still to come, the story we mentioned about a woman trapped inside of her home inside a 100 foot tree -- after

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> powerlines and phone lines and everything is out, blackout. >> people are just trying to get home and check on their families. liz: devastation in mississippi. the damage left behind after at least one tornado ripped through the state knocking down trees and homes. good morning and thank you for joining us. we will start with a look at the weather and we will get to that story in a moment. more rain is on the way although it is calm her today. lisa: several more days of r in the ground is supersaturated, calm wind and that means the temperatures will drop off. the sun is up at 7:05.

mid 30's downtown. upper 30's in pacifica and a pretty view from the sutro tower camera. mid 30's santa rosa with some frost around the bay and upper elevations. 37 by the delta. we will continue to see the colder numbers this morning, two to five degrees colder compared to yesterday and a look at the wind will keep it on the cool side. through noon, 20 miles an hour. as we look at the temperature profile it is a slow warm up and mid 50's by noon. by the afternoon upper 50's to near 60 and timing out the next storm in a few minutes. liz: at least 23 people are dead after a powerful tornado and thunderstorms ripped through mississippi. dozens are also hurts and four people are missing. the deadly tornado left a trail of damage for more than 100 miles. officials are describing areas as chaotic with traffic making

it difficult for search and rescue crews to do their job. >> complete devastation with roofs ripped off of walls. everybody is in relatively good spirits. i have not seen a lot of injured people. a lot of people are helping. not a lot of emergencies that way because they are thin on that. liz: thousands of people are without power as crews respond to gas leaks and people trapped in the rubble. mississippi officials have issued multiple tornado warnings. closer to home a harrowing ordeal for a family. a huge oak tree came crashing down early yesterday morning trapping a mother and her son. we talked to the woman who said that she did not know how her son is still alive. >> it was just a crack and then a loud boom. >> a sound that linda ross would

never forget, the moment this 100 foot oak tree crashed into her home early friday morning. >> the first thing i was doing was screaming to my son who was trapped. i was also trapped because the door got stuck. >> the family shared the pictures of the damage that the tree caused to the bedroom. remarkably he was not hurt thanks to quick thinking. >> i do not know how he lived, honestly. his room is totally destroyed. the tree is on his bed and he heard it and jumped out of bed. >> they were trapped on the second floor of the house. >> they threw ladders some holes and got the people out. luckily everyone was safe and no one was injured. >> the oak tree stood for nearly a century in her front yard. parts of the oak fell onto frank's properly -- property narrowly missing his house or in car. >> when these trees get to 100

four attacks on u.s. forces in syria. one american contractor died in one of the attacks. dariad has the details. daria: more drone and attacks in eastern syria, at least four in the last 48 hours. the first happening early thursday morning in northeast syria. u.s. intelligence saying it was a one-way attack drone. a u.s. contracter was killed and another injured. this is the first time an american has been killed in syria in a drone attack. president biden authorizing retaliatory airstrikes. the authorized two f-15s destroying training facilities. >> the united states does not emphasize, seek conflict with iran, but be prepared to act forcefully to protect our people. daria: this is the first time
