down to just one lane for a little while. larry: a damaged power bodega. you can see it just snapped in half. >> in san close mission street over concern more lines could fall. just a window cracked in last week's storm. larry: we have team coverage on this storm in the aftermath. teams across the bay area bringing you the latest. let's start with spencer christian and a look at what's happening with the storm. you said has been downgraded? spencer: it was a level two all day with strong gusty winds. we have heavy downpours but the rain is tapering off. look at the north bay where there are a few light, scattered showers. steady rain in the east bay where you have light to moderate rain to oakland to hayward and

all the major highways there. in the south bay, heavier rain fall in that region but the storm is beginning to weaken and push out of the bay area. look how the winds have been today. surface winds under 10 miles an hour with a gust at 22 miles an hour. even in the higher elevations, the wind gusts have diminished significantly. we are looking at the exclusive storm scale. showers come up possible thunder, occasional downpours and as you look at the forecast animation, although we will see some more downpours coming our way overnight and early tomorrow, the morning commute is not going to be an easy one. more details a little later. dion: moving on with her team coverage and liz kreutz. larry: liz joining us with a

look at conditions there and the concerns. >> got drenched earlier in the north bay. it is dry right now which is welcome news for the cruise working at novato. even through the rainstorms to monitor a landslide that happened off of highway 101. in sonoma county, we went to a winery. they've been forced to close for the equivalent of about a month since december because of all the rain and flooding. rain, rain, and, more rain. for the fourth tuesday in a row, all morning and afternoon, heavy showers poured down around the north bay. in sonoma county, gusty winds toppled this large power pole in bodega. in, several trees fell down, clipping this home. >> this is the road that leads down to the winery. >>ona,he o roat

leads to larson family winery flooded yet again. the manager says the only way to get through his and his large truck. the constant rain is taking a toll on business at a time when things have already been tough. larson families tracing room -- tasting room burned out a fire. they've been forced to close down 25 days in the past few months. stm bn lenge>> he says they aret of the city is drying out and we still have flooded roads. the road has become a big issue. >> another big issue where continue to monitor the landslide in novato. >> we have some geotechnical engineers on site.

bit north of that. she joins us live near half moon bay. >> good afternoon. we are live off of highway 92 and half moon bay were conditions have finally started to clear up. it was a much different story only a couple of hours ago when that rain was really pouring down on this tightknit community. when neighborhood saw quite a bit of flooding and they say this storm damage since the start of the year. packing a punch along the coast. with waves sstn pacifica, some servers chose to stay away. th,hile the region is still working to pick up the pieces from the last storm. ower lines down in the moss beach area from last week. sandbags were not enough to

protect john siewert's garage. >> this year, maybe four times. it flooded the back yard, too. there's four inches of water. >> he's got three sump pumps working to clear it out in what feels like deja vu. >> it's not fun. you have to keep everything in your garage up on blocks and then you get a lot of water and then clean out all the silt and dry everything out with fans. >> repeatedly. >> repeatedly. >> some of his neighbors had to go on a wild goose chase desk -- just to track down their trash cans. jessica mauch not wasting any times. >> all of the waste i floated down. >> she is grateful the damage from the storm wasn't worse. >> we are safe here, which is great. there are some places that are not very safe with trees falling down. i feel lucky.

ventured out. this storm is a far cry from last week and the week before. still, there were accident here and there like this mid-day crash on highway-2 four. in orinda, heavy rain, down in lafayette with a muddy mess on the trail. a totally obscured mount diablo over walnut creek in this latest deluge. afternoon downpours down in danville stop at other bay area spring day. >> least favorite weather. rain is always good for california. >> but it's not good for little league games. practices and games canceled. >> i had fun doing candlelight when we lost powers with the kiddos but we are bummed baseball season is on hold. >> but there is good news -- and improving situation along interstate 580 at the altamont pass where last week, a retaining wall collapsed as lanes of the busy freeway

responds to emergencies. they've done that many times. what was new today is the department of building inspection, that the apartment sent out emails to several of its customers regarding windows safety, recommendations such as close and latch any operable windows. if you see a crack, notify the building manager. this is the new san francisco. those tall steel and glass structures have defined the city's skyline. but in recent weeks with the strong wind storms, walking past them has become somewhat unsettling. the fear of glass falling is called mellow phobia. >> we need to be more careful. >> a window building cracked, closing the street below for a few hours. >> we are able to confirm no glass has fallen today.

very unlikely it is going to fall. >>haer remaining on the ground today was blamed on previous glass damage. in smaller neighborhoods, it is the downed trees that have caused damage to property. in bernal, cruise removed some fallen branches while trying to salvage what was left. there is concern in the city for the hundreds of trees already lost. today's wind interrupted some ferry service as the waves and wind made conditions difficult. even when they resumed, crossing the bay made for a choppy ride. >> it was a little choppy it was smooth and toward the end, i could see the bridge shaking all the way. >> some still enjoy the outdoors. >> you are like the mailman. you are running even with the rain? >> i'm embracing the cool wind and get a free shower while i'm at it.

>> are you tired yet? >> a little bit. >> let's talk about the trees. several years ago, san francisco set a goal of having 155,000 trees on our streets by we were behind even before all these storms and now with all these fallen trees, the big trees, it is very unlikely san francisco will meet that goal. leanne melendez, abc7news. dion: the storm is causing more power outages in the bay area. taking a live look at the pg&e website showing you problem areas in real-time. most are concentrated in san francisco. some on the peninsula. fewer than 3800 bay area customers affected. you can track the storm using the doppler as the

dion: a strange pursuit in southern california chp chased a stolen highway patrol vehicle. the chase reached 70 miles an hour on the 138 freeway in lancaster. it came to an unusual end as the driver jumped out of the vehicle as it was still moving at about 40 miles an hour. i guess we are not showing that part. he did hit his head on the asphalt. we have not gotten an update on his condition. larry: now to the deadly fire at an immigrant detention center in mexico. 39 people died, 29 injured. migrants seeking asylum waiting for their chance to cross the border into the u.s.. >> it is one of the deadlie fires to hit migrants in mexico in years. rows of bodies were laid out in front of the detention center covered with blankets after a fire broke out inside the facility late monday, killing over three dozen migrants hoping

to enter the united states. mexican authorities say dozens more were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. the center is less than seven miles from el paso and was largely home to men who requested asylum and were waiting for an opportunity to cross the border. the mexican president says migrants were mostly from central america and venezuela and claims the fire was started after the migrants discovered they would be deported. he says as a protest, they put mattresses at the door and set them on fire. a spokesperson with the white house national security council says they are in contact with officials in mexico and ready to provide help. the deaths come just after two people died and several were injured after 17 people were trapped in a train call -- train car near uvalde, texas. two weeks ago, eight migrants died after two suspected smuggling boats capsized near

san diego. today, over 100 members of congress wrote a letter urging the biden administration urging them not to restart the detention centers and instead it based in -- invest in commute he based programs. we are waiting to hear the names of the migrants who died last night. so far, none of their identities have then announced. larry: police chilling video of yesterday's deadly school shooting in nashville, tennessee. it shows police bodycam footage as they entered the school and confronted and killed 20 eight-year-old audrey hale. investigators still do not have a motive but says -- say hale was being treated for an emotional disorder. her parents say they sare leave the house with a large bag. >> they asked her what was in the red bag and i think she just dismissed it because it was a motherly thing and didn't look in the bag because she did not know her daughter had any

weapons. larry: hail legally purchased seven weapons since 2020, including several ar-15 rifles. police also found a possible manifesto among the documents. president biden has ordered flags to fly at half staff in honor of the victims of this nashville shooting. cities across the country and in the bay area have lowered their ctims.out of respt foth good news is conditions outside are improving. larry: spencer is back with a look at what we can expect. spencer: it has been quite a stormy day but the storm is weakening, both wind wise and rain wise. we still have quite a bit of rain in the area but it is lighter, becoming a bit more widespread -- not widespread, but more scattered. we still have wet weather and light to moderate rain over the east bay. the storm was a level two storm

on the abc 7 storm impact scale first stop -- impact scale. occasional downpours and possible thunder. we might still get some drenching downpours from time to time and slick roadways. here's the forecast animation. the storm continues to move southward and eastward. by 8:00, the main body of the storm will be out of the bay area. following that will be lines of showers and there may be downpours. by after midnight, you will see the rainfall become more intense and the morning commute is going to be a wet one because it will be several lines of showers with heavy downpour and cold air producing snow in the higher peaks in the north bay. tomorrow afternoon, furtherhe wr warer.mo

country, including 14 from the bay area are in washington, d.c., pushing for climate resolutions they helped write. those resolutions call for teaching climate change in schools and help young people deal with mental health challenges brought on by climate change. a 16-year-old in sonoma county helped author the resolution as a member of students for climate action. >> it is essential for our voices to be heard and to be included. we provide a unique and informed perspective given we will be disproportionately impacted by the effects of the climate crisis. dion: local members of congress, including barbara lee and mike thompson will introduce those resolutions. larry: coming up, the push to legalize psychedelics. is this moving too fast? dion: the bill that would allow people to include their full name

dion: a state bill that would decriminalize the possession and use of psychedelics is facing opposition. a coalition of narcotics officer says the state is rushing the approval of natural psychedelics. they want the substances researched and approved by the federal drug administration first. >> all drugs should go through proper research and approval process for the protection of citizens. psychedelics would not be treated differently.

dion: sp 58 would allow the use of psychedelics derived from plant-based substances. drugs like lsd are excluded. state senator scott weiner sponsored the bill. he says waiting for fda approval would delay their use by years and other cultures already use magic mushrooms and peyote safely for healing. larry: to another state bill that would give californians new options to spell their names correctly. it is a be 77 introduced that would allow the diacritical marks on vital documents. these are like accents or other symbols used in some foreign languages to influence pronunciation or emphasis full to would allow the use of these symbols on official documents like birth certificates, marriage license and medical records. dion: another tuesday and another storm hitting the bay area. larry:

announcer: building a better bay area -- moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. larry: commute this morning as heavy rain hit drivers crossing the bay bridge and and emeryville, you can see the wind right there -- a good amount of rain at the marina. dion: at our bay area tower camera's. just a little rain and showers spreading out. a little blue skies as well. the majority of our storm heading out. spencer: happy to say the heavier, more widespread rain is tapering off. there is still wet weather mainly in the east bay pushing into the south bay but this is generally light with an

occasional downpour. the winds have tapered off dramatically. we have gusts over 50 miles now or in some spots. surface speeds under 10 miles an hour. there could be an occasional gust during the evening hours. in the evening hours, wind speeds up to 20 to 35 miles an hour, but those powerful gusts have diminished significantly. the storm that was a level two for much of the day is now a level 1 storm. we expect showers and possible thunder, occasional downpours and slick roadways. it could produce some snow in our higher elevations. here's a look at the forecast animation. by 8:00, much comber conditions but bands of showers swinging through the bay area. tomorrow morning's commute will probably be a wet one as we expect strong downpours and snow falling in the higher peaks of the north bay before things get

quieter tomorrow night. still have a wind advisory in effect for the south bay and peninsula until 8:00 tonight. there could be an occasional gust, but sustained winds are relatively calm. dion: that is good news. moving on to dustin dorsey now. larry: who joins us with a look of what's happening in the south bay. >> pg&e may be hard-hit again by outages that could knock out power to thousands. as a for the cause, it is the usual suspects -- wind and rain. a look inside the brains of the pg nd operation. staff on hand at the cupertino emergency center as the 15th storm of 2023 blew through the bay area. >> what we faced this year is unprecedented. it has been widespread >> >> and extensive.

the center is staffed 20 47 due to all the storm damage. employees keeping a close eye on the live outage maps, ready to send cruise out into the field. the calls for service have come often across the bay area. >> we have removed about 4000 trees that fell into our infrastructure in our service area. about 5007 hundred power poles and 900 miles of power lines stop that is a longer distance going from giants stadium to dodger stadium and back. >> with more wind, pg&e is expecting more trees to fall again. >> we are still catching up. we have had trees down for a week we are still trying to get to and our team has been working 12, 14 hour days just trying to keep up with everything. >> these are some of the trees near moffett field in mountain view. it looks like a tornado ripped through the area. all victims from last tuesday's high winds. some highlight a trend during

this week's storm. >> you would think all of them that would have fallen had fallen but one of the big things we are looking for is most of the trees falling our healthy trees. >> like this massive pine tree. the roots gave way to saturated soil and wind. he says keep an eye out for splitting branches were leaning and diseased trees. with healthier trees, crack some the soil may show tree is ready to come down. >> that is what we have been noticing a lot lately. trees are in the process, the ground is cracked, roots are breaking. healthy trees could be falling and it is hard to tell until you look at the ground. >> don't just look down tonight but look up as well, especially when you are parking your car. you don't want to park underneath the tree. you never know when the next one may come down. dion: that is so true.

thank you. it is almost april but there is still a lot of snow to be found across the state stop a viewer posted this image of snow in clear lake in lake county. still quite a bit there. the storm is also making the drive to this year a somewhat treacherous. these are caltrans vehicles at twin rides. this is what it looks like at donner lake. in the past hour, the chp closed i-80 between colfax and the nevada state line due to multiple spinouts. a backcountry avalanche warning is in effect until tomorrow morning. larry: you may feel whiplash -- drought for years, now high reservoir levels and we have the snowpack in this year. we have some help to keep track of this. abc 7 news has launched our california weather tracker. you can find it on our website. it will look like this if you go to the website. what we are tracking is

on social media. we're talking about laundry, not twitter. is it better to wash your clothes with cold or warm water? the debate has been around for years but a recent article in the wall street journal is stirring things up again. maybe agitating things i should say. a chilly wash cycle saves energy and money but others argue a load and cold water doesn't work on tough stains. i just do whatever setting -- spencer: like the label on the fabric? some delegate fabrics are not supposed to be washed in hot water. cold water is better, but i prefer, generally speaking warmer or hot water because it seems to remove stains better. i think it kills germs better. dan: my youngest son when he entered college, he and i decided it's a myth of the detergent companies, trying to convince you to separate lights,

mediums and darks, so we were throwing them all in one until my wife realized and put a stop to it. dion: i've done that and tried a red t-shirt and then it dies everything. dan: sometimes that causes a problem. i was just convinced they are trying to get us to use more detergent. larry: outside of the red which leads to everything being pink. dion: this dress was originally white. [laughter] dan: did you wash that at my house? larry: levi's is making some changes in the way it advertises its clothes. the company announced its planning on using ai-generated models to quote supplement human models. levi's plans to test the technology saying it will increase the number and diversity of its models. let me translate this for you. you could just hire diverse models. dion: thank you. larry: but then you have to pay

all of them. the whole goal is to avoid paying humans. dan: i love how they cloak it in some sort of nobility. larry: days. it doesn't do a lot of things. dan: no surprise. this is where we are heading in so many things but the models are so good-looking they are usually fake anyway. they don't look like ordinary people you see on the street. not a surprise. i don't know that it matters one way or the other. dion: i can't imagine deciding to buy a pair of pants because the model is diverse one way or the other. spencer: i would buy the pants because i like the way they look or the way they fit. i'm a genius. dion: this is going downhill, so i'm moving on to the next story. let's talk about pepsi.

apparently they are going old school. they are switching their logo to the 1990's version. apparently it had almost no choice. pepsi surveyed people about their logo and most described the old one that had pepsi inside the blue and red circle. the current word has pepsi to the side. i didn't notice. pepsi decided why fight it, go back to a people of. this has not even been on my radar enough. spencer, you are not a soda drinker. spencer: i'm not. i remember the logo. i remember before logos existed. why change it? it was nice. dan: the new and is fine, but the old one is classic. i like the one where the logo looks like a bottle top with the jagged edges. that's my favorite. larry: this is classic consulting or 101. first, change the logo to a new, exciting look for your brand.

students. gloria rodriguez has more. >> some of the students chosen for this program have never traveled out of state and this exposes them to new cultures and experiences. this video shows students at west oakland middle school getting information about their itinerary and hawaii. they also got luggage for their trip from state bags which is partnering with alaska airlines on this. students will immerse themselves in a new culture, learn how to travel independently and experience the beauty of the islands. they will travel to a wahoo and maui and learn about respecting hawaii's cultural routes and nature. i asked what they are most excited about. >> probably the food, their culture, the water. >> i'm excited to see a new environment i have not seen before. >> i'm just grateful because not many people get to experience it. >> my goal has been to work with

light to moderate rainfall over much of the south bay and east bay but the main body of that storm is sweeping over the bay area which is why it is a level 1 storm on storm impact scale. expect areas of showers and storm, possibly downpours and slick roadways. going into the evening hours, the storm continues to weaken and we get breaks here and there . there will be waves of showers coming through during the morning. looks like it's going to be wet and messy. that activity will ease up and taper off tomorrow and the storm will be pretty much gone. overnight lows will be in the low to mid 40's. highs in the mid 50's. the seven-day forecast shows sunny and dry days before the next wave of light rain starts to develop this coming weekend. larry: i like the way he says light rain. dion: don't hate me, everybody.

carroll with a special bond. all in athens introduces us to this duo. >> >> it is not at would expect to see -- a goat and dog running around chasing each other. and gobbling up every last treat i brought one meeting the odd couple. goat is named cinnamon. the dog, felix. cinnamon is extremely attached to felix will stop the goat will whine and cry whenever the dog is taken away. they do everything together and have even been seen by staff cuddling in their kennel. >> that's not a normal combination. usually we have dogs attacking goats. this is a very unusual group. th owner wzed
