would be. all of this the result of an investigation that has been going on for years. a lot of local reaction to the story coming. but first let's begin with faith abubey with this major story. >> the manhattan district attorney's office looking into whether trump falsified records to hide a 100 $35,000 payment to stormy daniels sort of forked actually before the 2016 election. trump's former attorney michael cohen says the payment was meant to keep the affair with the porn star quiet. trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. michael cohen already pleaded guilty to facilitating the payment and served prison time and a grand jury has formerly found enough evidence to determine trump was involved in crime. >> indictment within moments. part of his lengthy statement

reads, the democrats have lied, cheated, and stolen in their obsession with trying to get trump but they have done the unthinkable, indicting it and -- indicting an innocent person the former president will try to spin this indictment in his favor in the political arena. >> it was bill clinton wound up being impeached for the monica lewinsky affair. what is unprecedented is being indicted. we have had two presidents go impeachment trials within one generation. unprecedented is a word that is going to be going into the closet for a while because this is uncharted unprecedented but very much the norm now and especially in donald trump's world and he will try to use this to his advantage. it might upset a lot of people but he is not one to back down. he doubles down. >> for my peninsula

congresswoman and abc 7 political analyst jackie spears says we should not rush to judgment even when you consider the former president's history. >> he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. we need to see the indictment. we need to see the charging document and that will tell us more but let's be really clear. this is historic. it is also tragic. this is a former president during his office was obstructing justice. during the mother investigation. he could not be charged because he was then president. now he is no longer president. it will be treated like any other american in terms of whether or not he has violated the law. this grand jury has violated independently -- has acted independently and we need to allow the process to move forward. the rule of law is what holds the country together. >> jackie speier. michael cohen the president's former lawyer who pleaded guilty to facilitating the payment and served prison time released a

statement today saying i do take solace in validating the adage that no one is above the law. not even a former president. today's indictment is not the end of this chapter he goes on but just the beginning. his sentiments were echoed by the lawyer for stormy daniels who statement includes this phrase. no one is above the law. francisco's has of the indictment could set up a legal battle and get florida governor ron desantis involved. he tweeted earlier florida will not assist with the next edition request from york. >> normally you would be given the opportunity to show up. if he refused to do that, if he said i'm not going anywhere governor of florida at that point would have to make serious decisions about whether to engage state law enforcement to honor the full faith and credit of the new york grand jury. and of course we know that the governor of florida is a republican, a conservative republican but is in some sense

line runs three feet wide and is 10 feet below the surface. 4.5 million gallons of water run through it each day. the pipeline brings in water from lake berryessa and the delta. the city both aligned in the 1960's. >> yesterday morning staff at the water treatment plant noticed a drop in the pressure and we sang crews check the field to see what was going on. we found a leak in that area. >> city leaders say they have not determined the cause of the leak. they say land erosion could be a contributive factor. the venetia mayor says repairs to cost a lot of money and take a while to finish. >> we are going to get to this as quickly as we can. but this is not going to be a short or easy fix or inexpensive fix. >> they are asking residents to cut down on water usage by 40%. the city is pulling water from lake hermit. they say the water will have an earthy taste and smell but it is safe to drink. venetia residents fear they will have to take on the cost of fixing this pipeline.

>> i'm retired and on an fixed income like most people of course. just concerned what is going to happen. everybody is wondering the same thing. >> venetia public works have assigned most of their staff to address the issue. they have brought in outside contractors and engineers to assist them. they are unsure if they can just fix the pipe that is leaking or if they have to replace it altogether but they face an extensive repair process. along highway 17 while caltrans clearance of storm damage. -- cleans up store damage. crews were filling potholes and cleaning up trees. officials say they want to take advantage of the sunshine and clean up debris from the recent storms. the southbound lanes were closed from redwood estates to summit road. crews will be back on the southbound lanes week after that. cleanups are scheduled to have

been monday to friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for the next two weeks. along the peninsula crews have shut down a portion of el camino in burlingame. crews are working to remove trees and to near edge hill drive from the recent round of storms. caltrans expects more closures as the work continues. >> signs of our recent storms are visible on our mountaintops. sky 7 flew over mel hamilton near san jose. still snow on the peaks as you can see. in the east bay similar visual. there is still snow on the summit of mount diablo. it is a little patch here in some spots. sandhya patel is here. >> she has all the latest on the storms we have had. and the drought map. what drought? >> we are drought free in the bay area. it is great. it's take a look at the statewide picture. five months ago the start of the water year october 1 the entire stay in a drought. the worst are categories covering a good portion of the

inland areas from extreme to exceptional even down toward some parts of the coastline. as of today you will notice how much the drought has shrunk and how much better it is in terms of the severity of the drought. as we take a look at the bay area we are drought free. statewide we were 36% of the stay in drought. today, 28% per the sacramento valley saw an improvement. everybody is above average. when you look at the start of the water year october 21, oakland, 182 above average. san jose 126% above average. 136% to rosa. 18 of the last 23 days have been rainy. it has been a productive march. as we take a look at the sierra snowpack it has been statewide. 235% of average statewide. the second snowiest season in history. we'll be back with a look at

racial and social justice. >> we are looking at the topic of reparations. compensation to atone for slavery and a long-lasting harm it has done to black americans. >> california is first in the nation state reparations task force met in sacramento. day two of its second round of hearings this month. today the task force discussed how to ensure reparations will be in line with the standards overseen by the united nations. it voted to approve several drafts of recommendations that will ultimately be in the final report delivered to the state legislature. those final recommendations will include suggestions to eliminate inequities faced by black californians and could also include cash payments. right now berkeley unified school district is holding a meeting to discuss the possibility of reparation payments for black students. >> suzanne phan spoke with leaders about the effort. >> berkeley is the first of many thanks.

>> as the first and of the nation to do so berkeley unified school district is setting up a task force to consider reparations for african-american students. today we caught up with the superintendent. she says there are still so many questions about how reparations could work. >> what with the planning look like? what with the implantation look like? i'm excited for this task force to be created. there is an informational session happening tonight. >> according to the website a few key questions of implementation new to be answered. how to fund such a progr what true reparations might look like and how to structure and implement it. a task force is being created to answer some of those questions. it would include 15 to 20 people from across the community. that means two board members, two b usd central office staff, three site staff at as many as 13 community members. at least one of them will be a student. >> i think healing can best start with our children. >> executive of healthy black families in berkeley. she says part of healing

require it in ojai schools. >> berkeley high as one of the few schools and california teaching some seniors how to navigate the financial world. this personal finance class is an elective where students must sign up. >> is buying a lotto ticket gambling? >> yes. >> this is what we often see. passion educators who make the first step and start an elective course. course for berkeley high and has been teaching at the past four years. it is not a mandated course. while 18 states require students to take a personal finance class, california does not. only 27% of high schools in the state offer it as an elective. assembly bill 94 once every school to offer it as it elective by the 2025, 2026 school year. after that it would be a required course. san francisco unified recently

received a three-year grant from the state to start training high school teachers. other districts will be awarded grants. for the superintendent of berkeley unified the course is a first step toward closing the wealth gap. hearing the >> >> student talk about all the things they are learning about personal finance, credit, debt, tax, savings and how it is not summing for the future but summing they are applying right now. >> the bill is sponsored by the superintendent of public instruction who was at berkeley high today. the cofounder of the nonprofit nexgen personal finances is also behind the bill. >> one of my missions is every student walks out of the class and we have built into our curriculum, believing they can be an investor because you can be. >> perhaps the big take away from any of these students is if you save $500 a month and invest it over 40 years in the top 500 large companies to can be a millionaire.

bay area. here is what we found in sunnyvale. i'm with channel 7. this is a clerk at a smoke shop in sunnyvale. do you have any flavored tobacco products? >> it is banned. >> he is right. most flavored tobacco products are banned across california as of late december last year but some cities like sunnyvale already had restrictions in place prior to the ban. >> beginning of the year don't have any. >> you don't have any? >> now. >> so what if you buy it online/>? we don't sell it? >> -- >> we don't sell it. >> public records confirm this business receive notices of violation for selling banned tobacco products in april of last year and january of this year. christie is sunnyvale's neighborhood preservation manager who works with code enforcement. you are saying this business has not been caught selling flavored tobacco products since. >> they were before but they

stopped. >> when was that? ? they have >> been inspected fairly recently >> and they were in compliance. >> the i team confirmed the business was inspected twice this year. most recently on march 4 and was deemed to be in compliance yet four days before the i team visited the business accompanied by an 18-year-old high school student. we saw the young man walk inside and followed him in to listen to the conversation with the store clerk. >> wanted to ask if i could get mental julie pods. >> one of many products included in the state been. the teen said the store clerk had them in stock. to be clear this product is included in the ban. >> he was still selling flavored vape fluid. because the store clerk did car the young man and the 18 year old student only showed his faxing card. it would be a violation for a minor or an adult according to the new law. this 18 year old student was

offered that product at this business. >> ok. we will go out and do another inspection than. >> in march she said she looked through the entire store. >> i looked throughout the cabinets and the shelves and everything and they were not selling any flavors. >> when we went into the same store four days later we did see e-cigarette devices which are technically legal as long as there is no flavor but flavored products are not. the fda has banned the flavored tobacco products from being sold or distributed across the u.s. yet the products are still being advertised on their walls along with other e-cig and vaporizing devices that sell flavored tobacco. weeks later we tried calling the store for comment. is the owner in? the owner was not in but we spoke with the same clerk. he denied offering pods to a minor and claimed he may have offered non-flavored tobacco,

virginia pods. it is important to know last year the fda ordered flavored e-cigarette products be removed from the u.s. market. the store clerk denied any further comment. coming up tomorrow night we will tell you about another loophole with this band that is allowing anyone of any age to get access to these products on the black market or sent right to their front door. >> that is amazing. >> thanks, stephanie. >> if you have a story for stephanie or the abc 7 i team call this number on your screen should or go to abc7news.com/i team. >> a 20 year employee at the end is a police officers association has been charged in a scheme to distribute drugs including fentanyl. zach fuentes has the -- spoke with the president of the police union. >> shocked. became saddened. and as the days have gone am at a place where i am now angry.

the san jose police officers association said he first got a call from federal authorities last friday that the union executive director was charged with attempting to import a legal synthetic opioid drugs from overseas specifically a form of fentanyl. prosecutors say it was part of a scheme to distribute in the u.s. he says he had been with the union for nearly 20 years. >> a woman who has helped fallen officers families, helped organize fundraisers when officers children are sick. >> investigators say she used her personal and office computers to order the drugs and agreed to distribute them elsewhere in the u.s. the police officers association said they had no knowledge of it and are conducting an internal investigation. the union says she had a front desk operations but did not make decisions for the organization. they still don't know what her intentions were with the drugs. according to this criminal complaint homeland security agents were led to her through an investigation that looked into a network they say ships

controlled substances made in india. investigators found between october of 2015 and january 2023 she had allegedly 61 shipments mailed to her home from countries around the world. some had labels like wedding party favors. federal investigators found thousands of narcotic ells. the santa clara county supervisor heads the fentanyl working group that works to combat the opioid crisis locally. >> it is a reminder of how accessible this is and that we from a law enforcement and community perspective need to be much more aggressive and assertive about how we deal with interrupting the chain. >> we reached out to her but have not heard back. the complaint states she denied any illegal activity in initial interviews and later tried to blame her housekeeper. she is due in court friday at 1:00 p.m. if convicted she faces a maximum sentence of 20 years. >> the fbi is asking for any information to help locate a san mateo woman who was kidnapped in

mexico. the fbi is offering a $40,000 reward to find this woman. the 29-year-old was walking near her residence in the city of capitoline in at least go, mexico when she was forced into a white van. she has been missing since november. >> anneke was an innocent victim in this. she was targeted. the kidnappers want something and we are working to find them to bring monica home safely. >> the fbi is working wi woman's family and mexican authorities. if you have any information on her whereabouts, please contact the fbi. >> for the first time since the cold war, an american journalist has been arrested in russia and charged with espionage. he pleaded not guilty during his court appearance. he faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. faith abubey is in washington with the latest. >> the biden administration is strongly condemning the arrest of an american citizen and wall street journal reporter in

russia. actively trying ten aned him on alleged espionage charges. >> the targeting of american citizens by russian government is unacceptable. >> the kremlin claims he was caught red-handed while allegedly collecting state secrets on russia's military-industrial complex. the 31-year-old reporter pleading not guilty during a court appearance thursday. the journal also denying the accusations and demanding his room -- his immediate release. a russian political analyst recently interviewed by him tells abc news the journalist was in russia's fourth-largest city reporting on the founder of the wegner group, a private militia group fighting for the kremlin in ukraine. >> a very -- very deeply troubled about it because when state actors wrongfully detained our citizens it is very difficult to get them out.

ethanol jumped the tracks with several cars erupting in flames in the towns of raymond overnight. no injuries or environmental threats have been reported but an evacuation was ordered and a half mile of the crash site. is make sure folks are safely able to return to their homes, make sure cleanup happens and a way we don't get anyone injured. >> ethanol is a high alcohol. exposure can cause headaches, nausea and irritation of the skin and eyes. >> a routine training mission ends in a tragedy. two blackhawk helicopters crashed last night near fort campbell, kentucky. nine service members were killed reena roy has more on what went wrong. >> an investigation underway in trigg county kentucky after two 101st airborne division medevac helicopters crashed wednesday before 10:00 p.m. crews discovering the wreckage in field. nine service members killed. >> this is a truly tragic loss

mortgage rates dropped for the third week in row but it is not necessarily easier to buy a home. inventory remains low. according to freddie mac this week the average 30 year mixed -- 30 year fixed mortgage rate and of the u.s. was 6.23%. interest rates are still relatively high compared to the past few years. if you look at the past few decades today's rates are low to average. >> just a couple years ago it was to have come a 3%. its turn our attention to the weather. >> big change for now. >> it is so nice to be able to get out and enjoy some sun should take a look at a live picture from zephyr cove where it is a lovely scene. snow on the ground. see our snowpack is doing well and the snow up in the mountains. sierra and tahoe, 17 inches. some of the resorts picked up close to three feet of snow.
