in american history before. donald trump indicted by a grand jury today, becoming the first u.s. president ever charged with a crime. good evening and thank you for'd for a president before. the front parade -- page of the new york times says, trump indicted. ama: here's a live look from mar-a-lago where trump is absorbing the news tonight. the specifics of what's included in the manhattan indictment are not yet clear. dan: tim johns is here with more on what we should expect in the days ahead. reporter: as you can imagine, the news sending shock waves around the nation including right here at home in the bay area. i've been speaking with local political experts and leaders about what the former president's indictment means and where we go from here.

an angry reaction from many republicans thursday night following a new york grand jury indictment of former president donald trump. everyone from his former vp -- >> i think the unprecedented indictment of a former president on a campaign-finance issue is an outrage. reporter: to trump himself who said, this is a political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history. he's expected to surrender in week. >> he will get the treatment someone of his stature would normally get but he won't get special treatment. he will be fingerprinted. there will be a mug shot out. things like that. reporter: you see law san francisco professor says the indictment is just the first step of a long process. >> it's not a conviction. we need to emphasize that. he's accused. there has not yet been a trial or proof of his intent. reporter: the move raising questions about the 2024 election. many sang the indictment could

headlines with the abc 7 bay area mobile app. enable notifications. dan: the fbi offering $40,000 reward money to help find a san mateo woman kidnapped in mexico. monica daly own was believed to have been taken late last year. lauren martinez is hearing from close friends about this urgent, desperate search. >> somebody out there has information that can help us. they may not think it's important but we asked them to let us be the judge of that. reporter: the fbi offering a $40,000 reward to help find a san mateo woman kidnapped in mexico. authorities say on november 29, 2022, monica daly own was abducted while walking her dog. >> she was kidnapped by multiple individuals. we don't believe that it was a random incident. we believe that she was targeted. the kidnappers have been negotiating with the family. the fbi is working with the

family to engage with the hostage takers. reporter: the 29-year-old is a u.s. citizen but she has also residence in mexico. the fbi hoping the reward can prompt someone to come forward. >> if somebody knows anything, please contact the fbi. reporter: her close friends from college describe her as relatable, funny, charismatic. >> it's hard. you spend years of your life sharing with someone and then they aren't there. reporter: monica is a talented photographer who moved to mexico last summer for a job opportunity and zoomed with her friends just a few days prior to her kidnapping. >> monica feels like our family to us. we've known her so long. she is a crucial part to all of our lives. her case doesn't seem to have gone -- gotten as much attention as others. so bringing our voices forward to bring attention to the fact that she is missing and she hasn't been brought home. reporter: lauren martinez, abc7news. dan: plans are being put into

motion for more mass nationwide marches against gun violence. this in the wake of this week's mass shooting at covenant elementary in nashville. video shows protests from today at the tennessee state capitol parents calling for lawmakers to implement stricter gun control legislation. there's also been buzz on tiktok and other social media sites about marches organized for tomorrow. those haven't been confirmed. we know that the first funeral wl be held at the naat 3nt c a: vic deman rnment tonight. they chanted as they marched through the town. [inaudible] displaced residents say they feel ignored and they believe not enough has been done to repair the area. a levee breach caused severe

flood damage earlier this month. >> there's frustration and anxiety in the community. we are very empathetic about that. we genuinely care and we have people out there every day. ama: protesters are waiting for more federal help. the state requested a presidential disaster declaration from the white house. fema won't be able to come help until that happens. dan: we are placing a central focus on race and social justice. that issue is top of mind as there are many conversations happening over reparations. the idea to pervade -- provide payment to black americans to compensate for decades of discrimination. the berkeley unified school district officials are looking for people who want to join their reparations task force. the school district is considering reparations to their african-american students. they are looking for 13 people including one student to join the team. they held an online information meeting tonight. 20 people will consider how to

implement reparations. they will answer questions on how to fund the program and what payments will look like for students. california's own state reparations task force also met today in sacramento. members from the community came forward to give statements on why reparations are necessary for african-americans. here's a clip of public comment made during today's meeting. >> thank you for seeing me. slavery was wrong. the lasting effects on us. we are all children of god and deserve to see the goodness of the lord and the land of the living. dan: they disc ensure reparations plans will match the standards laid out by the united nations. the task force is mulling over different forms of compensation or payment it would recommend to the state. its final recommendations are due by july 1. ama: a victory today for the city of oakland and its plan for the a's new howard terminal ballpark. an appeals court ruled the

city's environmental review of the ballpark is adequate and can move forward. the city and a's are still negotiating over pieces of the ballpark plan. the uncertainty over the a's staying in oakland is being felt by the fans. for opening night at the coliseum this evening, it was all about the hope for the season. j.r. stone was there, hearing from fans about why their support isn't wavering. >> let's go. >> go a is. >> it's opening day. reporter: it's opening night at the coliseum for the oakland athletics. are you excited about the a's this year? >> i can't say am excited. we are going to have a bad year. reporter: fans keeping it real thursday night, aware of the athletics stadium saga. the team eyeing oakland's howell -- how returnable in looking at other locations in las vegas. carlos curiel canceled his season tickets this year for the first time in 17 years. >> we are not really trying

filed a motion to intervene on behalf of the forestry service. paradise has large amount of retardant dropped in 2018 in an effort to put out the massive campfire that raged through the area. it's the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in california's history. ama: state senator bill dodd of napa announced a new bill to crack down on e scooters on college campuses. the bill got through an initial committee meeting in sacramento today. the legislation will regulate traffic rules on campuses for devices including electronic studer -- scooters and segues. a student was killed while whiting an electric scooter on the uc davis campus last year. >> ladies and gentlemen of the jury, this trial is finished. dan: that was it. a jury sided with gwyneth paltrow today in a case about a ski accident involving the actress. a man had sued her over injuries he suffered after the two crashed on a resort ski slope in

2016. the jury dismissed the man's complaint, deciding paltrow was not at fault for that crash. ama: a new report shows the number of restrictions written for adhd surged during the pandemic. the cdc study shows a spike of more than 10% across all age groups. there's been a rise in adhd diagnoses in recent years but some experts believe the increase in prescriptions may be due to more use of telehealth during the pandemic. the proposed requiring in doctor visits for adhd medication. ama: bay area fishers will have to say goodbye to dungeness crab season sooner than expected after it got a late start. the california fish and wildlife department ordered an end to the commercial season on april 15. this affects the fishing area from the sonoma county line to the mexico border. officials are trying to minimize the risk of humpback whales becoming entangled in fishing gear as the whales return to forge off the coast.
