now san francisco's mayor is requesting outside intervention to help with the city's illegal drug problem. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm a dion lim. will the federal government step in to help clean up san francisco street? that is exactly what mayor london is requesting. it happens as san francisco's police department is struggling with understaffing. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard joins us live once again with details on who exactly the mayor is now calling on for help. cornell? cornell: hey, dion. the mayor is calling on the feds. she is requesting help from the u.s. attorney in northern california with help with the city's drug crisis here in the streets. mayor breed: my hope is that we will be able to partner and work together on trying to address these important issues. cornell: mayor london breed admits san francisco needs help to slow drug dealing happening everyday on the streets. breed just wrote a letter to the newly appointed u.s. attorney

for california, ismail ramsey, saying the problem is beyond the city's control. mayor breed: we definitely need some help, because when we look at, not only are we in our police departments shortstaffed, but the arrests and the whole process that goes into that, to having the capacity to meet the challenges has been difficult. cornell: breed says the city needs help and support from the department of justice to both arrest and prosecute drug dealers, at a time when the fentanyl-driven overdose epidemic has brought open air drug dealing to a new level. the san francisco department of public health tweeted its street teams responded to more than 2200 911 calls last year, treating overdoses and providing medical, mental health, and medications for addiction. in 2021, breed declared a three-month emergency in the city's tenderloin, using city resources to crackdown on drug dealing. mayor breed: all the various pieces we need to make that as effective as i know it could have been were not necessarily

there, but i am optimistic about the future. cornell: district attorney brooke jenkins says federal assistance is welcome. in a statement to abc 7 news, jenkins says no single agency or department is able to tackle the crisis of drug dealing and the impacts it is having in and on our communities alone. >> it is a public health calamity we have not seen as a city since the aids crisis. cornell: supervisor matt dorsey supports the mayor's plea for federal help. he says over the last two years, 2000 people have died from drug overdoses in san francisco. >> if we have had that many san franciscans gunned down in our streets, there is no question, the president of the united states would have the national guard, the governor would have the national guard here. cornell: dorsey says federal law enforcement has resources city agencies often do not, and federal charges can bring more consequences for drug dealers.

he is hoping that a meeting with the u.s. attorney and the mayor can happen very soon. we will see what happens. we are live in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. dion: thanks. a series of earthquakes shook parts of the bay area today. take a look. this usgs map shows quakes were centered where the star is in san leandro. the squares show areas where people felt the earthquake. that includes san mateo, fremont, san francisco, and oakland. the oakland zoo felt the quake but says the animals and facilities are safe, and the quake felt like a gust of wind. the first quake was a magnitude 3.2 and happened about 9:20 this morning. two other 3.2 quakes happened just a few minutes later. the good news, there are no reports of injury or significant damage. you may have gotten this push alert from abc 7 news about the earthquake minutes after it happened. if not, you can download the abc 7 news app and enable notifications to get breaking news sent directly to your mobile device.

a search is on for a driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash in redwood city. police responded to the scene near veterans boulevard and maple street at about 9:30 last night. that is where a vehicle hit and killed a bicyclist. northbound lanes of veterans boulevard were shut down during the investigation. police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to give them a call. over in the south bay, there was a two-alarm fire at a former mcdonald's. the fire ignited on north 1st street in san jose after 2:00 in the morning. firefighters were seen putting out heavy flames that were coming from the vacant building. officials said there were no injuries, and they are not sure what exactly caused that fire. to developing news now, tornadoes and dangerous storms are blamed for at least 21 deaths in the south and midwest. more than 50 tornado reports were recorded in seven states, and the storm front is not over yet. abc's jaclyn lee has a look at the destruction. jaclyn: residents picking up the

pieces after dozens of reported tornadoes tore through the midwest and south. at this nail salon in little rock, arkansas, employees and patrons taking coverage in the back. >> about 20, 25 of us ran to the back area, closed the door, huddled together, and prayed for our lives. jaclyn: governor sarah huckabee sanders declaring a state of emergency and visiting this fire -- this heavily damaged fire station. gov. sanders, it is the heroes born out of this tragedy. the fact that we have firefighters who, despite the fact that they had a tornado literally coming through their station, worried about the community. jaclyn: further east in tennessee, a journalist posting these images to social media, saying he thought he was going to die after his vehicle was picked up and tossed off the road. in belvidere, illinois, west of chicago, chaos inside the apollo theater. >> the roof collapse at the apollo. there were people inside. unknown how many injured. jaclyn: 260 people inside. one person did not survive.

the storm so powerful, the marquee ripped off the building. officials say the theater, more than 100 years old, was recently renovated. >> when you think about what it means to the city, we would like to have that. it is a landmark. in a way, it is kind of like our brand. jaclyn: that same storm system is moving along the east coast today, with severe weather in ohio, pennsylvania, new york, and new york. dion: happening now, improvement on the red and yellow lines. b.a.r.t. is replacing an intersection of track. the agency says the equipment is decades old and has outlived its design life. buses will be running between stations during the work. now take a look into history. a time capsule shows us what the city of san francisco looked like almost 100 years ago. the capsule, buried by a boy

scout troop 90 years ago, was unearthed today. mayor london breed and a council of armenian organization hosted the ceremony. some items discovered were a 1920 version of the bible, groundbreaking soil of mount davidson, and lots of photos. they had an official publication of the salvation army news it marks the easter sunrise service held at the historic site. >> it makes us remember and connect with those people that were here on mount davidson cross a century ago. dion: the new time capsule had been buried in the same spot to be opened 100 years from now. some terrifying moments for shoppers at a california strip mall. take a look. >> get out of the car! stop! dion: a carjacker makes a desperate attempt to get away

dion: attempted carjacking turned into a wild demolition derby in a parking lot near los angeles, and the whole thing unfolded on video. >> [car honking] dion: it is total chaos. in agoura hills, a woman first tried to steal another woman's purse, then she got into her car, got behind the wheel herself, and put it in reverse. the car had an anti-theft device on the steering wheel, making it nearly impossible to steer. witnesses describe the crash course that followed. >> she drives over here, crashes into a car over here, this tesla. she drives around and crashes into another car on this side. she makes another loop, crashes into another car. >> i was so scared, because she was definitely out of it.

she was so determined to get out of here, out of the parking lot, that she just kept trying to angle the car. dion: unbelievable! the car eventually got stuck on a curb. the car driver tried to run away, but witnesses tackled her and tied her down until police arrived, as you can see. at least five cars were damaged in that incident. just ahead, concerns tonight about the future of a tahoe resort that has been part of the community for more than 60 years. people rallied today in opposition to a redevelopment plan that critics say could create the first private ski resort in tahoe. as we take a look outside, lots of skies and clouds. abc 7 weather anchor spencer christian is next with your accuweather forecast. chris: coming up in sports, giants and yankees go back and forth in the bronx, plus stephen

dion: in san francisco, the exploratorium held an event to celebrate trans day of visibility. the event highlighted achievements and raise awareness

of transgender individuals, including those who work in the s.t.e.m. fields. trans day of visibility is traditionally celebrated on march 31. the event included the entire family, from live music, a story hour, photo gallery, and panel discussion. >> we wanted to make sure that each person who comes here knows that they are welcome here. everybody, regardless of how you identify. dion: the exploratorium teamed up with the s.t.a.r.s. program for the event, which strives for trans inclusion and antiracism in science learning. the s.t.a.r.s. program is open to all. over the east bay, a special fundraiser was held for kids in need for -- of our hayward for children at martin luther king jr. middle school. the event was hosted by flag football camp to teach the ins

and outs of football to children living in underserved communities. former pros and college players stepped in to teach them the importance of hard work. >> they could do anything they want to. they can accomplish anything that they want to, if they are willing to put in the work, if they are willing to have the right attitude, and if they are willing to believe in themselves. dion: former players from the 49ers and the raiders were at today's event. the camp helps prepare children to play football in advanced leagues and in high school. a rally today in tahoe to protest expansion plans by homewood mountain resorts. grassroots group keep homewood public says the owners of homewood, jama ventures, want to turn the ski resort into a private ski area, requiring lifetime memberships and limiting public access. they accuse the company of a bait and switch tactic when it

comes to development plans per -- plans. the resort responded with a statement, saying "the department continues to conform to the approved master plans, reduced numbers of residential units will not privatize the mountain and continues to support recreational access to the mountain during all seasons." talking about seasons -- it is spring finally. [laughter] spencer: it will feel like spring over the next week or so. milder than it was yesterday, but we still have chilly mornings. dion: we are getting there. spencer: slowly but surely. here is a look at live doppler 7 . it is a dry day. breezy as well. not gusty, between 10 and 15 miles an hour come up with a couple of locations busier than that. the 24 hour temperature change shows it is a few degrees milder right now than it was yesterday at this time. that does not mean we have a mild pattern developing yet. we have mainly sunny skies over san francisco so far. there are a few clouds out there, 56 degrees in the city, oakland 59, low 50's palo alto, mountain view, 50 four half moon

bay. here's a look at the golden gate, skies are still mostly clear. 57 right now santa rosa, low 60's at napa, fairfield, concord, and livermore to one more live view from emeryville. you can see clouds built up near the coast. that is not the only place the clouds are building. partly cloudy and dry overnight. breezy with spotty, like showers tomorrow and the afternoon. that will be mainly in the north bay, and it will be windy and cooler monday and tuesday. overnight forecast animation looks like this. a few high clouds passing by, than a break of clearing, more clouds develop of north, as some very light rain develops near ukiah. a spotty sprinkle or two moving down south to the golden gate, but most locations will be dry tomorrow. very few places will get any a measurable rainfall, but if there is any, it will be about 1/100 of an inch and the,

oakland, maybe 4/100 of an inch in ukiah, if we get wet weather at all. low 40's inland north bay, but other inland areas and the bay shoreline, we will see low to mid 40's for most of the area. high temperatures tomorrow under partly cloudy to family sunny skies, mid to upper 60's around the bay shoreline, and upper 50's to low 60's, even milder, and the inland locations. here is the accuweather 7-day forecast. windy monday with gusts between 35 and 45 miles per hour at times. mostly sunny skies, though. we have continued dry weather through the middle of the week. chilly on tuesday with high temperatures only about 56, 58 degrees. as we get later in the week, a little bit of a warm up, then finally next weekend, it is starting to feel like spring. >> now abc 7 sports with chris alvarez. chris: after a rare friday off to accommodate the potential bad weather on the east coast, the

giants and yankees resuming their series in the bronx. the giants looking for their first run and first win of the 2023 season. the iconic stadium, there it is. they call the yankees the bronx bombers, but the giants, in the fourth, peterson solo shot to right. the giants first run of the year, 2-1 game. three batters later, another bay area native, brandon crawford, he has now homered in 25 different ballparks. 3-2, giants. giants have a three run lead at the end of the night, but the storm was brewing. giants fans and yankees fans anxious for different reasons. duval loads the bases on giancarlo stanton up, snagged, goes across to wade, hangs onto the bag. reviewed it, upheld. their first win of the year. a's and angels, a's pitcher shintaro fujinami, making his major-league debut. his mom at the coliseum, and she was nervous.

of organically back in 2013, at about the third or fourth year income i realized that when i was in high school, i did not get invited to my own camp, because i was a two star, three-star career -- recruit. that is how the underrated tour became a real thing. >> you have to play hard. chris: it is about basketball but life skills you need, connection, a chance to college. stephen curry: one thing about sports is it teaches you a lot about yourself, how to be on a team, building confidence, work ethic, perseverance, and you develop those skill sets in high school, potentially get scholarship offers, that could be a door opening to a life in any industry but an opportunity to live that experience out through sport. chris: not shy, either. they're coming up for selfies. i heard one once closer, steph. how did that happen? stephen curry: hey, man, nice meet you, can i jump over you when dunking?

fakes-giving day parade returned to los angeles. people gathered in honor of saint stupid. they dressed in wonky costumes, traveling from the building up to washington square park. people were directed to follow the pop up doggy diner head for a free bite to eat. organizers said today's parade was more of a stroll in the celebration of stupidity. not saying they are actually stupid. they are quite smart. they planned this on a day that is sunny. spencer: that is right. dion: more paper being crumpled music: “i wish” by skee-lo boom! sound of paper balls landing in bins office workers cheering music stops why do we shoot baskets with paper balls? for the same reason we play scratchers from the california lottery. because a little play can make your day.
