solutions. this is abc 7 news. we need all the help we can get lives are at stake here. a call for more help facing spiraling opioid epidemic san francisco seeks assistance in getting it under control. good evening, and thanks for joining us. i'm dionne lim. you're watching abc 7 news at 11. mayor london breed is asking for a federal lifeline now when it comes to curbing san francisco's ongoing drug crisis, it all comes as her police department struggles with understaffing abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard with who the mayor is turning to. my hope is that we'll be able to partner and work together on trying to address this really important issue mayor london breed admits san francisco needs help to slow drug dealing that's happening every day on the streets breed just wrote a letter to the newly appointed us attorney for northern california ishmael ramsey saying the problem is beyond the city's control we definitely need some help because when we look at not only you know the fact that we

in our police department are short staff i mean because an arrest there's a whole process that goes into that and having the capacity to meet the challenges has been difficult great says the city needs additional and ongoing support from the department of justice to both the rest and prosecute drug dealers at a time when the fenton all driven overdose epidemic has brought open air drug dealing to a new level the san francisco to provide a public health tweeted it's street teams responded to more than 2,200 911 calls last year treating overdoses and providing medical health and medications for addiction in 2021 breed declared a three-month emergency over the drug crisis in the city's tenderloin using city resources to crack down on drug dealing all the various pieces that we need to make that as effective as i know it could have been weren't necessarily there, but i'm optimistic about the future district attorney brooke. jenkins says drug dealing prosecutions are increasing at her office, but says federal assistance is welcome in a

statement to abc 7 news. jenkins said no single agency or department is able to tackle the crisis of drug dealing and the impacts it's having in and on our communities alone. it is a public health calamity. we haven't seen as a city since the aids crisis supervisor. matt dorsey supports the mayor's plea for federal help. he says over the last three years 2,000 people have died from drug overdoses in san francisco if we had that many san francisco's gun down in our street. there is no question the president of the united states would have the national guard the governor would have the national guard here. dorsey says federal law enforcement have resources that city agencies don't and federal charges can bring more consequences for drug dealers. he and the mayor are hopeful of meeting with the us attorney can happen soon in san francisco cornell bernard abc 7 news. now stands the question who would benefit from federal intervention as abc 7 news reporter tara campbell discovered. you don't have to look hard to find people who could use the help.

a lot of horrible things happen to her she told me she didn't want to die. lisa rakovski is talking about her daughter who's living on the streets of san francisco's tenderloin district. she's on meth and fentanyl just a few years ago. her daughter was living what she describes as a nice life in san jose, but an introduction to street drugs turned it upside down. she's living in a tent in san francisco right now when she has a home to live in she has family that loves her but the drugs it's kind of like they're her family and they're her everything right now. it's a story this group of bay area moms knows all too. well there the founders of mothers against drug addiction and deaths the non-profits been calling for more action to stop the flow of drugs on san francisco street. there's so many drugs out in the market and they are so lethal in small quantities that cracking down on the supplies been

absolutely, you know, one of the the key pieces of our our campaign saturday. plotting mayor, london bridge request to the department of justice the mayor asking the federal government for more help getting drug dealers off of the streets. it's a big step and you know, we have felt that this is necessary for a while now last year the nonprofit put up this billboard in union square taking aim at the open air drug market. this is really where i think she's she's eventually come to because you know at the end of the day, we've got to really crack down on the drug dealing. otherwise, it's just going to continue to spiral out of control. meanwhile lisa fears for her daughter's life on these streets. they have the drugs there and they need the drugs every couple of hours. they're going to want to live on the street. they're gonna want to get those drugs tara campbell abc 7 news. tara has been covering the opioid crisis heavily.

fell off. officials say there were no injuries and they are still not sure what caused that blaze. in san francisco the exploratorium held a family event to celebrate trans day of visibility the event highlighted achievements and raised awareness of transgender individuals, including those working in the stem field. trans day of visibility is internationally observed on march 31st, the event included activities for the entire family from live music. to story hour a transgender photo gallery and panel discussion. we want to make sure that each person that comes here knows that they are welcome here our spaces in general here in everywhere else more. welcome to everybody regardless of how you identify. the exploratorium teamed up with its new stars program for the event which strives for trans inclusion and anti-racism in science learning. the stars program is open for all and works to expand science education field.ihe

in the east bay the city of berkeley approved its first ever high-rise apartment building according to berkeley side. the building will have a total of 326 units 32 of those will go to low-income tenants. it'll stand nearly 270 feet high at shattuck avenue near berkeley's bart station. all residents will get transit passes and underground parking garage for 51 vehicles and 295 bikes. a project is a part of the downtown area plan, which was approved 10 years ago. well much more to come on abc 7 news tonight another blow to san francisco's japan town the longtime business that is closing for good this weekend. deadly weather across the us with powerful tornadoes tearing through communities an update on the storms. just a little later. i'm stranger christian with a look at mainly dry days ahead,

animation. anyhow, very very little developed a little disturbance. we'll develop in the north bay tomorrow afternoon producing a chance for some spotty sprinkles or showers the rainfall estimates for 11 o'clock tomorrow night. all right, almost zero, maybe one or two spots will have 100th of an inch of rain. the only really measurable rain is likely to fall up in ukiah which may get four hundreds of an inch of rain. okay overnight lows will be generally in the low tonight forties a little bit chillier. and some of the north bay locations like santa rosa lakeport, which will drop down to about 36 degrees and then highs tomorrow mainly low 50s at the coast mid to upper 50s around the bay shoreline and some low 60s inland 61 degrees at conquered in antioch. 68, san jose and up in the north bay. 60 will be the high at santa rosa. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast notice mainly a windy conditions on a very windy conditions. in fact on monday. we expect gusts between 35 and about 45 miles per hour, but it will be sunny and dry. day, there are tuesday wednesday thursday.

weather is turning deadly once again tonight strong storms are hitting the northeast with a tornado in delaware blame for at least one death. it's the same system that rolled through the south and midwest friday more than 20 people are dead after dozens of tornadoes touch down in at least nine states. here's abc's derek dennis. a deadly tornado outbreak stretching from the midwest into the deep south and now the northeast the latest just tonight in delaware this video captured in bridgeville in sussex county where state police say one person died when a home collapsed during the storm. friday in sullivan, indiana
