dan: our an earthquake rattles northern california, but its effects are enormous. >> mother nature sho have to be cautious. ama: tonight, we have the questions being raised of why we didn't know about it. good evening. dan: it was enough to give the bay area a serious stir today because we know the potential these could bring. ama: let's get to abc7news meteorologist stanley a patel -- sandhya patel. sandhya: we have had multiple reports of aftershocks since then, celebs take a look at where that happened southeast of hollister. it was a 4.5 magnitude earthquake this afternoon at a depth of six miles. we will take a look at how many reports there were. there were 62 reports with a magnitude of 6.5 as a xi

this is a good reminder to be ready. this was on the calaveras fault and as we look at the intensity map, it was strongest around the epicenter but it was felt all the way to the bay area up to the north bay out towards the central valley. we are talking all the way out towards merced, fresno, modesto. when you look at the earthquake intensity, the magnitude was a 4.5, which is a light earthquake, but with noticeable earthquake, the energy equivalent is about 33,000 pounds of explosives. so if you felt it, and i felt it up on the second floor here, it was a jolt. ama: it certainly makes sense when you put it that way. dan: for the locals living on top of this earthquake today, they got quite a jolt. ama: lauren martinez want to hear from neighbors about the damage. >> everything started falling and what do i do because it has been so long since we had this

size of earthquake? lauren: the 4.5 e rattled the nerves of some and some grocery store shelves. >> it rolled a bit, but it was not terrible. lauren: after the managers of hollister super made sure no one was hurt, they went into cleanup mode. >> lots of sauces and glass on the floor. lauren: they joked alcohol was spared. >> another thursday, i guess. [laughter] lauren: at dollar general, their doors were closed for the rest of the day to deal with cleanup. at mullaney nail spa, only some products tipped over, but the quake was long enough to cause a scare. >> there was a lady sitting in the pedicure chair and she had her shoes off, she ran outside so scared. lauren: the quake is a reminder to be prepared. >> it is a good reminder of

safety and what to do. lauren: april's national earthquake preparedness month, so a good idea for everyone to update their emergency plans. in hollister, lauren martinez, abc 7 news. ama: the earthquake was felt across much of the bay. dan: many folks are frustrated about not being able to get a helpful alert on their phone. ama: j.r. stone spoke with experts tonight to get answers. >> all of a sudden there was a big jolt and shaking. >> it started to shake and really started to roll. j.r.: descriptions of tuesday's earthquake that centered than hollister came from across the bay area. on my facebook page, questions and comments came pouring in about the shake alert early warning system. some like melanie received this image and said, i felt it in gil wrote, got alert on my phone,

but many other people like vicky and sheila never received an alert. those from usgs have a reason for that. >> the people who receive those alerts will be the people who can feel that intensity three level. j.r.: and in the dark areas where many of you told me you felt the quake, this official from usgs says that intense movement was felt in the southern area of this map, where the earthquake was not centered in san hinze spoke -- san francisco or san jose. >> the ideas to send the alerts to the people who can feel the most shaking and where the danger is. want to prioritize that because the basic currency of the shake on system is time. j.r.: the group says they ar constantly improving the alert

system, which monitors earthquakes in california, oregon, and washington. while there is work to be done, early alerts for lower intensity quakes are a challenge. >> intensity level three, a truck passing by your house, is the lowest level we can do this most accurately at this point. when you get to the lower shaking levels, there are so many factors and influencers that will affect if you feel it or not. dan: and make sure you are ready for the next earthquake. get a kit, make a plan, and look forward. some breaking news tonight. a major force in the tech world is dead. ama: let's get to abc news reporter tim johns. this is all developing as we speak. what do you know? tim: the news has come as a shock to many online. tributes for bob we h pouring in.

lanterns on grand avenue. they are iconic. the atmospheric rivers and windstorms have pummeled the bay area at took a toll on the delicate paper lanterns. the chinatown merchants association has launched a gofundme campaign with the nonprofit bechinatown to replace the lanterns, which also function as an extra layer of security. >> a lot of the residents in sro like evening strolls, but it can get really dark in the alleys and on the streets. that -- the lanterns act as a sense of safety because they are lit up at night. dan: each strand of lanterns cost roughly $1000 and three blocks of them need to be replaced. the final building of the bay area breakthrough tonight will take place in san jose. the city is racing to shore up coyote creek from flooding after those recent storms. but it could come at a serious

search for oakland's next police chief. our media partners report the process of finding armstrong's replacement has not started. the search will be conducted from commission that consists citizens. it has been nearly two months since armstrong was fired. dion: the state of washington is stocking up on abortion medications that could soon become harder to find. today, the state purchased a three year supply of the generic version of a medication. a two pill combination of the drug is the most common form of abortion in the u.s., but a conservative christian group is suing to reverse federal approvals in the wake of the supreme court decision last year to strip away the constitutional right to end a pregnancy. >> we thought it was appropriate to buy enough that will care for

there is more snow news to talk about. sandhya: a few more inches coming as we go towards the end of the weekend. a life picture right now because it is all quiet at safford cove, but it will look very different. take a look at the sierra snowpack. statewide, we are at 241% of average. 302% in southern sierra, this is just crazy. we have seen historic and unprecedented snow this weekend. we take a look at the rainfall outlook from the climate protection -- projection center. this is about a week away. we are looking at above average rainfall out west and you will noticed it is a 33% to 50% chance of above average precipitation in the bay area. you can enjoy the sun right now, but do not forget we still need the umbrellas close by. in terms of temperatures, much of the central and eastern portion of the u.s. are looking above average and the climate
