the attack happened in the ring con hill neighborhood. >> we have team coverage to do -- to give this story proper context. liam melendez looks at crime in san francisco comparing perspective to reality. >> let's begin with stephanie sierra with the chilling details of bob lee's last moments. several sources confirmed surveillance footage -- he was looking for help before he fell to the ground on the sidewalk. we don't know what exactly led up to the stabbing but we are told he was in town this week on business. >> 365 main. >> it was just after 2:30 tuesday morning. sources tell the abc 7 news i team surveillance footage shows the bob lee, a high-prof

alngown the empty block of main street with apparent stab wounds in his upper left chest. sources say the 43-year-old was looking for helpbuilding nestley bridge. a reporter with our media partner is san francisco standard has seen the video. >> the video i viewed shows bob lee or someone looking like bubbly walking up main from the bay bridge toward harrison. at harrison, he seems to lif his shirt up as he approaches a car that is stopped on the corner with its flashers on. the car then drives away. he falls to the ground. he gets up again and walks back on main the way he came. the other side of the street and falls down. the blood that i saw at the scene also tracks that video seemed to show. >> lee received cpr six minutes

after emergency crews were dispatched but he died at the scene. a kitchen knife with a four inch blade was found in caltrans parking lot across the street. >> i am overwhelmed to hear today's news. it is incredibly tragic. >> george sobel was his former next door neighbor in mission bay. > we were an extra neighbors for three years and got closer. spent a lot of time together. >> he knew him during his time as squares chief taylor g officer and when he founded cash upcoming the first app to pave the way to instantaneously transfer money without fees. >> without him there would be no cash out. he helped some different startups. >> a longtime member of the silicon valley software development unity he had recently moved to miami. >> i did not realize how big he was in the tech industry. he was another kind of guy who talked about himself. >> jake shields was traveling to go see him in miami this week.

his father rick said bobby worked harder than anyone and was the smartest person i have ever known. it will be missed by all of those who knew him. bob's brother tim who lives in palo alto shared i was so fortunate to grow up with him and feel like i have lost part of myself. >> we've also heard from mayor london breed. she writes the homicide of bubbly is a horrible tragedy in my sympathies go out to his family and friends. the district attorney treated i want to extend my sincerest condolences to family members and loved ones for his loss. we don't tolerate these horrific acts of violence in san francisco. in he tech executives have taken to social media to say that violent crime in san francisco is horrific and the streets are unsafe. >> you hear that a lot but is there truth to that? we and melendez is here with true facts regarding violent crime. >> when someone you know is killed or attacked, it hits close to home. we understand that. people have also witnessed the

car break-ins, the shoplifting at stores. the lawlessness and you suddenly hear people say i don't feel safe anymore in san francisco. it is a perception. we want to acknowledge that but it is still our obligation to be impartial and to spell -- and to dispel the narrative gang put out about crime in san francisco. tech executive bob lee was killed in ring con hill, an upscale san francisco neighborhood. it is home to many young professionals. opening to the latest census the median household income is more than $244,000. lee's murder is the first reported homicide this year to take place within the southern station of the police department . neighborhoods like the tenderloin and bayview have had or homicide so far this year yet that seems to go unnoticed among many san franciscans. but that one statistic in ring con hill has summoned the tech

industry talking and posting a lot. tesla ceo elon musk poston violent crime in sf is horrific. many more executives criticized mayor breed and city officials for creating in their words unsafe streets. congratulations, your policies have claimed another life. but is san francisco really as dangerous as these tech executives claim? not according to the latest 2021 fbi and local police crime data has compiled in abc 7's neighborhood safety tracker. san francisco is close to the bottom of the list of major cities with 6.9 homicides per 100,000 people. austin, los angeles, miami, washington, houston, annapolis, oakland, chicago, atlanta, milwaukee, philadelphia, detroit and st. louis had more reported homicides than san francisco. supervisor matt dorsey

represents the district where the was murder. >> it is not a city where anyone should feel -- and fear for their lives at 2:30 under the morning. >> the crime trends for the year as of april 2 20 23 have 12 homicides compared to 10 for the same period last year. the number of reported assault cases is up by 2% and robberies are up by 14%. but rape and human trafficking crimes are significantly down. >> statistics don't matter when it is somebody you love who has lost their life in an incident in san francisco. that right there puts everything into perspective. san francisco has problems like many cities but these numbers we just showed you, this factual information does not fit the narrative that some people are putting out their on social media. that said i want to echo what supervisor matt dorsey said. these statistics are not comforting to the families of

off one of the towers to be transformed into housing. abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains how that might affect the city. >> once a centerpiece of hotels in downtown san jose, the future of the former fairmont now sick ne-yo by hilton is again in question. >> want to call on the city council to greet -- to use its governing power to set protections for workers, the arts and downtown prosperity by ensuring the use of the space stays as a hotel. >> the owner is accepting b to sell the 264 room seven tower of the hotel. while the northern tower would remain these members of the community argue it would lead to the loss of transient occupancy tax money that goes to the arts community and the elimination of hundreds of hotel jobs. >> my colleagues and i have weathered the storm of the pandemic. if the 264 rooms of the south tower are eliminated

clouds and a beautiful view from our golden gate bridge camera. a little bit of a bruise but nothing terrible. san francisco to oakland. 59 in mountain view. this afternoon high temperatures were in the mid-50's to mid 60's. still a good four to seven degrees behind where you should be for this time of year. from our oakland airport camera you can see a nice view. no problems as far as flights go. 60 in napa. popping up into the low and mid 60's. fairfield, warmest spot was 65. from san jose, you are seeing extra clouds. increasing high clouds. this morning we had mid 30's. showers return late tomorrow night going into friday. warmer weather for the weekend. nice for easter. as we look at our hourly temperatures tonight at 7:00 we have temperatures in the 50's. it we start to notice 40's. those numbers will drop by

morning but not as low as what we saw this morning because of the extra cloud cover insulating us. you start off the morning with 30's and 40's. partly to mostly cloudy skies. for the afternoon, mid-50's to the mid 60's. cloutier any the early part of the viewing area. less cloud cover to the south. filtered sunshine. on our abc7news storm impact scale, this is a light level one for late tomorrow night into friday. light rain. breezy conditions. the highest amounts will be in the north bay. you're fine early part of the day tomorrow. as we head toward tomorrow evening, a few showers start to develop at 7:00 p.m. in the northern part of our viewing area. it will take a bit of time. by 5 a.m., the friday commute is going to be a slow-growing one with the rain. keep the and mind to going into 8 a.m., still some scattered showers. we stop the clock as we are expecting the giants home opener to get underway.

caused massive flooding in the town of paro. many still living in evacuation centers p today major relief thanks to volunteers who traveled from the san mateo county coast to help out. zach fuentes has the story. >> the road to recovery for the people it's long. still many undocumented residents will not qualify for fema assistance. even with evacuation orders lifted many homes are still unlivable due to toxins and extensive damage. >> it is very difficult for the kids. as adults we can say we will live in the car. for kids what are we supposed to do? >> as families like this continue to struggle. some will come relief was brought to the evacuation center they have been staying at. the help coming on they doubled upper deck double-decker bus coming from half moon bay.

>> a 7 on your side>> review -- forcing victims to use the tap feature and draining their accounts. happen to several chase bank customers in san francisco. >> the bank of one victim set out to prove to the bank he was scammed. michael finney has your story. >> amazing story from start to finish. the scammers knew that by tapping your card the atm transaction window stays open even after cash comes out. if you walk away too early the thieves step up and start withdrawing money. the bank said there was no proof of any scam. after losing everything, this young man decided to go get that proof. >> there was a card stuck in the atm. >> joey recalls how someone stole his money at this chase atm. the card slot was glued shut. a man next to him offered help. >> he says you have to tap your

card because it has been broken. i was like thanks. >> joey tapped his phone, withdrew $60 and walked off. it all seemed normal until he went back to the atm. > the same man was there. that is what i was suspicious. >> as joy withdrew another safety dollars the man came closer. >> he went up to the atm right behind me. i was like that is not good. >> sure enough he later found multiple withdrawals from his account. $1640 gone. >> i'm like that happened to me. >> that guy scam to me last night at the atm machine >> i do not think anything of it. i thought he was just using the atm. >> i definitely did not withdraw that much money. >> the same thing happened to the other customers at the atm. >> they put glue on of the card reader of the atm machine. >> a bank manager told victims the scammers poured glue into the slots so victims have to tap instead.

i tapping the transaction window stays open even after the cash comes out. if a customer walks off though closing the window a thief can step up and withdraw more money. >> i called them maybe 20 times with a misspent of the week. >> chase bank rejected his claim just as it denied other victims willing that they authorized the withdrawals. > they put in which said you don't have any proof of these claims. >> bueckers told joey he must have taken the money since he tapped his phone at the atm. >> since i did not report my phone missing i must have made these charges. which was not true. >> the bank refused to check the surveillance video to see who really took out his money. >> they said the police have to request the surveillance video should they need a subpoena. >> so joey took matters into his own hands. he made his own video. every time i walk my dog i would look to see if he was there and he was there one time. >> from across the street joey saw the same man looking at the

atm. secretly he shot this video. he says it shows the man scamming someone else. i told chase, i have this video. this is proof. they said just because you have proof of them doing it to someone does not meet it happened to you. >> we contacted chase bank. every druid -- eight review joe's case at this time you get a refund. the bank refunded other scam victims but is not said how it investigates these scams. telling us we are making changes tour atm's to protect our customers. >> i was super surprised because i tried so hard to get that money back. >> consumer advocates telus banks are not -- are required by law to conduct a full investigation. they're not allowed to simply ignore important evidence like surveillance video. if you lose money and your bank refuses to look at all the evidence you let me know about it. i'm getting people their money back. >> thank goodness you're doing it because they would not have gotten their money back. >> we are expecting rain to
