clouds thickening is the day goes on. a cold front will bring a return of showers late tonight and tomorrow morning. kumasi: since a deadly stabbing of well-known silicon valley executive bob lee. the search is still on this morning for the person who might be responsible. lee had been working for a cryptocurrency company called mobile coin but those who knew him said his innovations in tech will never be forgotten. amanda is live in san francisco with the latest. amanda: there is a growing memorial along tech street and a growing list of loved ones now coming forward and sharing their stories over the shock of his death. one of those friends describing the last few days as being almost numbing. another saying that the lee he

knew had no enemies. he has been called a loving father, loyal friend and all-around good guy. those reflecting on his contributions to the tech world say there are many innovative things he was still working on, things that would've helped people going forward. friends mention teal reit -- friends mentioned he relocated with his daughters but was back in san francisco for the cryptocurrency he worked for. his friend says the two had dinner as recently as last saturday, describing lee's spirits as high. >> he did not seem to have a care in the world. he was excited about where things were going and he was excited to be back in the bay. >> still processing. this is not expected. two daughters as well that he loved quite a bit. amanda: sadness for his loved ones is the understanding of who he was,

a man they say would have given up anything of value to avoid violence. ahead, we will share a detail -- we will share details about surveillance video that appears to show lee, just moments after he was stabbed, struggling along main street. >> we will minutes. people in the tech industry including elon musk taking to social media and expressing concerns over safety in san francisco. jobina, how is the stabbing death sparking this conversation? jobina: on social media, elon musk posted quote, violent crime in san francisco is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately. san francisco police officers are responding to that, a police commission meeting yesterday, chief l scott offered his condolences to the family and friends of mr. lee. he also said this case in san

francisco -- is san francisco's 13th homicide of the year and the first with southern station district which includes mission bay. chief scott says every homicide case is a priority for them. >> our investigators investigate these just as we do any other loss of life. i know sometimes the appearance of these high profile cases get the attention. i want to make sure people know that all cases get the appropriate attention and it is important for the public to know that. jobina: neighborhoods like the tenderloin and the bayview had more homicides this year. using our neighborhood safety tracker, we can -- we compiled the latest crime data available and if you look at this graph behind me, you can see the yellow line at the bottom is the homicide rate in san francisco in 2021. 13 big cities including

part of that is shutting down streets so we can have together space. kumasi: just last month, the city returned to in person meetings. the mask requirement expired at the end of march. julian: this reopening at oakland city hall comes nearly two months into a ransomware attack that has put at least 4300 current city employees and possibly thousands of former employees at risk of being hacked. one update was -- the mayor shared an update saying -- back online. the city is still working to figure out what personal information was shared. >> i am upset. obviously what is put out into the dark web cannot be taken back will stop i am frustrated. my information is out there as well. we are going to be proactive. julian: the mayor says with ongoing budget talks, the city is looking at further investing into i.t. systems to make sure this does not happen again.

we will be talking with the mayor about this topic coming up on midday live at 11:30. kumasi: the abc7news following an extraordinary step taken by the alameda county district attorney. they announced in a social media video yesterday that she is going to block a local judge from hearing any criminal cases in the future. >> because of judge mckennon's inappropriate comments and conduct on two separate occasions, my office will file a motion to disqualify him from hearing any criminal cases being prosecuted by our office. kumasi: the conflict all started a few weeks back when judge mark mckennon rejected da bryce's plea deal for a triple murder suspect. he faced 75 years to life for the murders but price offered a 15 year deal if he pleaded guilty to a single count of voluntary manslaughter. after judge mckennon rejected

that, price formally requested he remove himself from the bench but the judge declined. in the south bay, a coalition of police reform activists demanding answers in the case of a police officer involved in drug smuggling. -- is accused of importing and disturbing drugs including fentanyl using a work computer. yesterday a group gathered at city hall asking why officials are conducting an internal investigation instead of an independent investigation with community oversight. they also want city litters to stop receiving funds from the association and demanding her mugshot be released. >> she is no susie homemaker or betty crocker. she is an international drug cartel person, killing our people in our streets. kumasi: her next court appearance is set for april 28. julian: jewish communities around the bay are celebrating

passover. -- during the first night of the holy holiday. tim johns tells us security was top of mind this year. tim: it was the f an eight-day celebration. on wednesday, they hosted the annual passover seder to the local jewish community. >> a lot of good energy, singing and dancing. tim: passover is a holiday that celebrates the israelites escape from slavery in egypt. a time for family and friends to come together. despite the festivities inside, organizers tell us they had to worry about serious things, including security. according to the anti-defamation league, hate crimes against jewish people have been rising rapidly in recent years, including in california. in 2021, the adl says they reached an all-time high. >> we a specific way but we are being

kumasi: new developments -- then water line was damaged a week ago when a hillside collapsed. residents have been asked to cut water use by 40%. the city is pumping and water from lake herrmann as a secondary source. the emergency declaration clears the way for funding for repairs and some of that money might come from fema. caltrans crews have been working each night to repair 680. bolero has been find $1.2 million for two flaring incidents. one of those happened in 2017 the other in 2019 and both led to orders for people to stay inside to avoid exposure to hazardous chemicals. the environmental protection agency is requiring valero to make improvements to their chemical processing as part of the settlement. julian: small businesses in san

francisco's chinatown have a new resource to help fight crime. is funding 100 new security cameras. the goal is to help give video of things like break-ins so police can identify criminals. a lot of businesses iss grant we mom-and-pop places to install better quality cameras. >> they don't have to go through bureaucracy and they can easily store these cameras -- install these cameras in a much faster way. julian: others hope the cameras will be a deterrent to criminals altogether. also, the effort to restore the iconic red lanterns, has quickly met its fundraising goal. we told you about the story yesterday morning. the lanterns were badly damaged in a recent storm. you can see how torn they are. each strand of lanterns costs roughly $1000 in about three blocks of them along grant avenue need to be replaced.

the chinatown merchants association says they have reached the goal they set in a they are not bunnies, but look at these little lambs. how cute. so the zoo share this video with us, the lambs are about two weeks old, they are from -- where all six of the sheep are from. it will spend 30 days and quarantined by the petting yard. they have not been named yet but i wonder if they will have a contest or if they will just name them, but they are so cute. julian: when they first open up the door, they are like where are we and what are we doing here? kumasi: since we are talking about the zoo, we must tell you about this, especially if you like yoga. starting this month, you can do yoga surrounded by giraffes, zebras and more.

the san francisco zoo is introducing a new outdoor yoga program. this one hour class is going to be conducted in the middle of leeann b roberts african the classes are for everyone, no matter how much experience you have with yoga. tickets are $25 if you are a zoo member. if not, it is $50. if you buy a ticket for the yoga, you get admission to the zoo for the day. how close are we going to be? drew: i assume not that close but around. julian: they do have those goat yogas where you are in it, with the goats. that is part of it right? kumasi: they really like to be close. have you seen that video? drew: trying to be calm.

in the north bay. and then tomorrow morning, 5:00, we are tracking light to moderate scattered showers the first part of your day and by noon, this system is pretty much out of fear but we will have a lot of cloud cover left over for friday evening. rainfall estimates are highest in the north bay and the numbers drop off and we see this total in the south bay. lm that the south bay just ends up with a lot of cloud cover. saturday we are back to average, look at sunday. for easter we will see a lot of 70's return, some of the warmest weather we have seen so far. the second half of the weekend is shaping up to be nice. morning showers tomorrow. trending dryer for saturday, sunday we are trending warmer and looking nice. we will start to cool off and bring back cloud cover early next week but all in all, looking pretty nice for any outdoor activities this weekend. julian: you really outdid

we are loving what you are showing us. drew: we have to get through some rain first. ahead of a cold front we are tracking that is adding a few clouds and acts like a blanket. right now, temperatures in most cities running a few degrees warmer compared to this time yesterday. no frost advisories in effect and you can see most of us are in the mid to upper 40's right now. santa rosa coming in at 39 degrees. live doppler 7, here is the cold front that moves in late tonight and early tomorrow. outside this morning, it is calm and quiet. a bit of sunshine throughout the morning but clouds will thicken as that cold front gets closer. that rain will return first in the north bay and then spread south across the region overnight tonight. a closer look at that storm and previewing that weekend coming up. kumasi: the search is on for the person who killed well-known tech executive bob lee. he died after being stabbed in san francisco earlier this week.

lee had been working for a cryptocurrency company but those who knew him said his innovations in tech will not be forgotten. we are live in san francisco with the latest. amanda? amanda: we heard from several of lee's friends including one who described the last few days as being almost numbing. a second said they did not know lead to have any enemies, sharing shock and confusion over his violent killing. they have a lot of unanswered questions. what we do know is that friends all mention lee relocated to miami with his two daughters but was back in san francisco for a business summit with the cryptocurrency company he worked for. elevating their level of sadness, friends say lee would have given anything of value to avoid violence. they say he was a loving father, a loyal friend and all-around note -- all around good guy. well the search for the stabbing suspect continues, the sf

standard reporter watched were -- watched surveillance video showing the moments after lee was stabbed. >> at harrison, he seems to lift his shirt up as he approaches a car that is stopped on the corner with his flashers on. the car drives away, he falls to the ground, he gets up again and then walks back the way he came but on the others to the street and then falls down. >> even if somebody were trying to rob him or something of that nature, bob is one of those people who would not have tried to fight them or anything like that. he values his children too much. i cannot imagine anything like that. amanda: reflectin contributions to the tech world, we are told there are many innovative things he was still working on, things that would have helped people going forward. back out live along main street,

there is a growing memorial at the location where he was stabbed in a growing list of loved ones who are now speaking out -- and a growing list of loved ones who are now speaking out, expressing frustration over what happened. julian: many tech exe claiming san francisco is unsafe because of violent crime. they are making these claims on social media platforms but how true is it? we are trying to put this in perspective now. ryan curry joins us live in the newsroom with what the data says. ryan: tech executives like elon musk have posts on social media saying violent crime in sf is horrific. others attack city leaders and their policies on crime. bob lee was killed in an upscale san francisco neighborhood. his murder is the first reported homicide this year to take place within the southern station of the police department. neighborhoods like the tenderloin and bayview area have

had more homicides so far this year, according to the latest fbi and local police crime data. san francisco is close to the bottom of the list of major cities, with 6.9 homicides per 100,000 people. austin, los angeles, miami and others have more homicides than san francisco. supervisor matt dorsey acknowledges the city can be safer. >> this is not a city where anyone should fear for their lives at 2:30 in the morning. statistics don't matter when it is somebody you love who lost their life in an incident in san francisco. ryan: as of april 2 of this year, there have been 12 homicides compared to 10 for that same time last year. robberies are up by 14% but rape and human trafficking crimes are significantly down. kumasi: thank you. -- police chief is stepping down.

he announced his retirement after 25 years of service with the transit agency. he has been chief for the last four years. last month he announced changes in service that included think -- increased police presence -- police presence on bart trains. the deputy chief will step in as interim chief. in the north bay, -- has a new mobile response unit. instead of police responding to certain calls, the crisis team will. they will typically handle reports of mental illness or homelessness and will work together with the san rafael police department. we were there as the team hit the streets for the first time. >> we operate under 911 now. if anyone contacts safe team can come. instead of getting guys in trouble, we will come and see what you need. if you need transportation or food or clothes, anything like that. kumasi: this was actually

yesterday. san rafael police say the team will help free up officers to handle other calls. lian: the downtown san jose hotel formerly known as the fairmont is undergoing more changes. the owner is accepting bids to sell the southern tower to be transformed in the housing. a group that included hotel workers gathered in front of city hall opposing this conversion. they say it would eliminate jobs and impact tax money that goes to the community. omar torres represents downtown and went to the city to review -- wants the city to review the potential impacts before selling. >> the fact is if these hotel rooms go, more folks are going to be less interested in having a large convention in the city of san jose. julian: he says it would hurt the mayor's plan for a downtown vibrancy, but the ceo of the downtown association says gaining housing could help luber

in more businesses. >> eventually we will reach critical mass. important interesting retailers will be interested in coming downtown because critical mass has been reached. julian: as of now, no deal has been made. turning now to the latest on the special counsel probe into the alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the january 6 capitol attack, former vice president mike pence says he will comply with a grand jury subpoena to testify. jobina is at the live desk with more. jobina: a federal judge rejected former president trump's attorney's efforts to squash that grand jury subpoena for former vice president mike pence, citing executive privilege. originally pence was onboard board with trump's attorneys pushing to block his compliance but not anymore. his office says he quote, will not appeal the judge ruling and will comply with the subpoena as required by law. this subpoena could position pence as a star witness in the

special counsel investigation into alleged efforts by trump and allies to overturn the 2020 election results. pence was questioned by david mure about this. >> did you ever point blank say that the president -- to the president, i will not do this, i will not intervene, we lost this election? >> i did, many times. jobina: trump arraigned on felony counts in connection to hush-money payments involving adult film star stormy daniels just before the 2016 election. trump is the focus of a series of crucial inquiries, including a georgia grand jury election interference probe and two others in new york state. as for pence, his testimony could be weeks away unless trump's lawyers try again to block it. his team says he will comply with the court's decisions. kumasi: fox chairman rupert murdoch and his son may have to testify in person in the 1.6 det against fox news.

dominion voting systems is claiming the network damaged its business by allowing allies of former president donald trump to clean its voting machines were rigged for the 2020 election. lawyers have asked murdoch if he was aware fox news hosts endorsed those claims and he replied quote, yes they endorsed. >> fox itself has made plenty of arguments in court that separate from fox news, the fox corporation parent company which is what rupert murdoch runs, should not be involved in this lawsuit at all. kumasi: murdoch denied fox promoted election falsehoods, saying it was covering and commenting on trump's allegations. the trial is set for april 17 and could feature some of fox's biggest on-air personalities like tucker carlsen and sean hannity. julian: governor newsom is escalating his feud with for the governor ron desantis a tour with several red states.
