pitch. drew: the rain is quickly moving on. it's light to moderate this morning across the region. another cold front on top of us. from the east bay to the city, light rain in the south bay right now. we also have a cold front keeping temperatures on the mild side with the low to mid 50's right now. it is a warm morning. on the impact scale, this is a level 1 light storm. light showers. the biggest impact will be slick roads. the highest totals of rainfall in the north bay. it is a wet picture from the camera so showers are in the forecast until 9:00 a.m. -- from 9:00 a.m., but by noon they should be turning off. first pitch at 1:35 p.m. it will be in drive for the giants game. we'll keep the cloud cover

the ground. lee was on the ground for about 10 seconds before standing up. minutes later, he was walking toward a police car. >> we have seen leads follow up on. it's early in the investigation but i am hopeful. >> the district attorney telling us the office did not receive information indicating lee was targeted for something. lee was killed in the east cut neighborhood but there's been recent safety concerns across the city. those in that sunset district voiced concerns at a town hall last night. our reporter j.r. stone was there and it was standing room only. reporter: more than 100 people in the sunset recreation center on thursday night. this is the first time san francisco's district attorney and police chief have together spoken to community members in

person since 43 year old bob lee was killed in a stabbing on the other cited of town. we are igin murder. there is evidence i cannot talk about because we do not want to jeopardize the case. but there are good developments in the case. that is as much as i can say. reporter: those hearsay they are aware of crimes that have happened in other parts of the city, but they want to focus on crimes happening here. >> the focus has been on downtown and that is not all of san francisco. san francisco has neighborhoods and it they need to be equally represented in terms of police and fire. >> right now, all of the places are not safe, even on sunset. that's why we are doing this. >> we do not have the right number of policeman. reporter: bill scott says the department is sure a 68

officers. he also says there is good news -- short 568 officers. he also says there i alicationse we are double where we were last year with applications. reporter: the sunset district s the largest neighborhood in san francisco. the city has approved more funds for additional community ambassadors for the area. >> i want to point out the good news. we need to think about the good news. i am hopeful because you see the district attorney and our police chief sitting together. here. into other homicides reported into francisco, 12 more reported this year. a security guard was killed on january 4. and police have been able to solve two other homicide cases this year, one in january, the one in the hunters point neighborhood in february. two people were arrested for those crimes. three more murders happened in march but those victims are still identified -- unidentified. another homicide that happened on april 1, that case still open, and lee spoke with the mother and father whose son's 2022 murder is still unsolved. he was shot and killed last june. >> the car pulled out. they had a brief conversation. he backed up and they shot him. kumasi: there is a $50,000 reward for any information in

trips paid by a dallas real estate billionaire for more than 20 years. crow says he and thomas have been good friends since 1996. he said, "the hospitality we extended to the the years is no different from the hospitality we have extended to our many other dear friends." thomas is not bound by any formal ethics code as a supreme court justice, but he does a file an annual form in which he allegedly did not include his trips with crow. the report says trips including island hopping in indonesia, fishing at a private resort in the adirondacks, and an all male private retreat in sonoma county, which some people here are familiar with. none it is illegal but the lavishness of the gifts is unprecedented.

we are looking at ways that some local businesses our -- are conserving water. one business has installed a system that collects rainwater at a local school. that school will use the water in its garden over the summer. >> when kids are learning those lessons, we want them to learn about growing food. it is about water conservation and water capture. it is a demonstration system, in addition to actually providing the water. kumasi: also in sonoma county, local winery is collecting rainwater. it has already collected 125 gallons since installed in the winery uses it in the refrigeration system to cool down the facility in the summer. julian: today, state lawmakers and local fishermen will tal about the impact of canceling the salmon season. a group voted yesterday to close

who was killed in placer county. tim has that story. reporter: a life in the mountains away from the hustle and bustle of their native bay area that was the dream become , reality for jason cassem, along with his wife and two children. but that reality turned into a nightmare, after cassem died in a snow accident at the end of march, at their placer county home. >> he was a really good dad. and he was a really great friend and brother in law. he is going to be so missed. reporter: sarah marcantonio is jason's sister-in-law. she says last wednesday night, jason decided to put more gas into the family's generator, which was inside a small structure attached to the house. following the recent storms, that structure was mostly buried under several feet of snow, reaching all the way up to the family's second story window. >> when he didn't come back after a few minutes, my sister thought it was odd. reporter: marcantonio says while jason was inside the structure, the snow collapsed trapping him inside. after several minutes, the fumes from generator caused jason to lose consciousness.

his wife, melissa, realizing something was wrong ran out to try and rescue him before she too became trapped. >> she started cpr and chest compressions but then the fumes were so strong so she would try to come up for air. reporter: still inside the home, the couple's two young children heard their mother's screams for help and called 911. as first responders rushed to the scene, dispatchers also called an off-duty firefighter who lived nearby. after arriving at the house, he was able to rescue melissa. >> they all have said that it's a miracle that she's even alive. we have done this for a long time and this isn't usually how this ends up. reporter: but for jason it was , already too late. now as their family picks up the pieces, they're thanking everyone for the outpouring of support. and hoping jason's death can serve as a reminder of the importance of staying safe. >> where people could maybe see or learn about the snow area up here. no one expected this snow this

the man was hit in the after leaving his mother's house on wednesday night. a friend it says his injuries are serious. that friend shared old video of carmen body -- carmenati. he says it might have been retaliation for him asking men outside of his mother's house to leave. he says when he went to confront the group, they attacked him. >> don went out and asked them to move. as he bent behind and it struck him with a metal pipe in the back of the head. he went down. they continue to strike him, lashing at his face with a knife. reporter: he had to undergo surgery. don's friend it is worrisome to hear about the attack. he fears for the safety of people in san francisco.

a 24-year-old man has been under arrest for the attack, but police have not commented on the motive. julian: ok, thank you. a developing story, president biden slamming a contentious vote by tennessee lawmakers. the republican super majority voted to expel two democrats that joined protesters looking for a gun reform after that deadly school shooting in nashville last month. jobina: the president is not holding back, accusing the tennessee state republicans of choosingce expelling densadf bagusafetyeglaon. th justin pearson and justin jones were expelled from their seats. expulsion votes are rare in tennessee and have been used in the past to eject members for unlawful misconduct. johnson narrowly escaped expulsion by the republican

this republican lead states who have moved to ban trans athletes. there are 16 states that prohibit them from competing on at least the high school level. one thing to note about president biden's proposal is it would allow for some exceptions. julian: this has to be looked at in the larger debate over lgbtq rights in the past year. in record number of lgbtq bills have been introduced. it is tracking 451 existing pieces of legislation nationwide. so far, 24 bills have been signed into law in 11 states. the white house has this reaction. >> but the enactment of a new law in indiana, 14 states have banned gender affirming health care while some laws are currently blocked by courts. this is a dangerous attack on the rights of parents to make

the best health care decisions for their own kids. julian: many of the bills target education and what is taught in the classroom, especially when it comes to the discussion of gender identity and sexuality. kumasi: it wave of legislation has led to a massive rally this weekend for this saturday in san francisco. it's being billed as drag up, fight back. >> we have to show the politicians that this is not ok. kumasi: organizers say rallies are planned in other cities like los angeles. the drug overdose crisis is showing no signs of slowing down, according to the latest reports. this year, more than 130 people have died in overdoses in january and february. in the same two months last year and at the year before there were one and 105 overdose deaths. over 600 people have died from

an overdose in the last year. that could be exceeded this year. so people are calling on local leaders to do more to get drugs off of the streets and people into treatment. we spoke with a woman whose son is battling addiction. >> more people who come alongside us can start to say the same thing. and the stronger we will be together. kumasi: the mayer recently asked the federal government for more help in getting drug dealers off of the streets. the city is looking at overdose prevention people can go to use drugs under supervision in case of an overdose. a group of young starbucks workers are calling for better wages and more hours. the filed for unionization following two in santa cruz that became the first to unionize in california. they get paid $18 an hour in that area but they say it is not

livable. >> our generation is running out of options. we are facing an economy that we cannot kp wh.and going summer t fix the problem. kumasi: starbucks has been accused of antiunion activity. but last week the ceo's company said they did not violate labor laws regarding unions. the labor relations board said that to date, 368 starbucks stores have union elections, and 296 voted yes. starbucks is not reached a contract agreement with any of those stores. julian: it could shake up the electric vehicle game. walmart is planning to build its own network of electric vehicles charging stations. walmart says it will have the network built by 2030. they will also be built at some sam's club locations. a statistic that makes it more
