>> thank you for being here. you have made it through the first full week of the month. reggie: and even though it is raining now, it is going to be a great week. drew: will shut off quickly today. live doppler 7 showing you like to moderate showers, scattered in nature. the biggest impact is going to be slick roads this morning. on the storm impact scale, just a level 1 storm. light to moderate showers with the highest totals found in the north bay. we'll take you to the exploratorium camera. we have rain on the camera, overcast skies. showers are ending by noon, but we will keep the cloud cover for much of the day. it is looking good for the home opener. we will look at the forecast and a look at the rain. kumasi: happening today, we are expecting a key update from san jose's police union on the drug smuggling within its office.

as supervisor is accused of importing drugs including fentanyl from multiple countries and then distribute them. the union said it had no knowledge of what the employee was accused of doing. today's announcement is expected to include results of an internal investigation. they plan to hire an outside investigator. the employee was released until the next court appearance on the 28th. >> we have new developments in the investigation of the death of tech executive bob lee. video shows him stumbling early in tuesday morning. lee can be seen through the front glass door of an apartment building. he appears to try to use the call box there, then falls to the ground. lee was on the ground for about 10 seconds before he got up. we now know minutes later, he was walking toward a police car. >> we have some leads to follow up on. i can't disclose what those are now. it's early in the investigation but i am hopeful. and i am very confident.

>> district attorney brooke jenkins told abc news her office did not receive information indicating lee was targeted for -- in that attack. the rink in hill neighborhood, also known as the east cut -- peoplernll a satyha10 people pacd int the sunset recreation center with district attorney brooke jenkins and police chief scott. residents we spoke to say they want to see more officers in their neighborhoods. >> downtown, and that is not all of san francisco. san francisco has neighborhoods. they need to be equally represented in terms of police, fire, the whole works. >> right now, all the place is not safe, even at sunset. julian: chief the police department is short

more than 550 officers. is applications for the police academy have gone up. a sunset district supervisor says the city approved more funds for community safety and neighborhood engagement programs. kumasi: abc 7 news is digging into the other 12 reported homicides in san francisco so far this year. 40-year-old gavin boston, a security guard, was killed january 4. two teens were police have been able to solve homicide cases in the excelsior district in january and in the hunters point neighborhood in two people were arrested for february. those two separate crimes. three more murders happened in march but those victims are still identified -- unidentified. another homicide that happened on april 1 in the tenderloin, is still open and active. we spoke with the mother and father whose son's 2022 murder is still unsolved. 32-year-old samuel st. pierre was shot and killed in the

calling for a thorough investigation into the matter, and want tighter ethics rules for the supreme court. according to the bombshell report from pro public eye, -- pro public vacation trips paid by a dallas real estate billionaire for more than 20 years. crow says he and thomas have been good friends since 1996. he said, "the hospitality we extended to the thomases over the years is no different from the hospitality we have extended to our many other dear friends." as a supreme court justice thomas is not bound by any , formal ethics code, but he does a file an annual form in which he allegedly did not include his trips with crow. the report says trips including island hopping in indonesia, on a super yacht, fishing at a private resort in the adirondacks

kumasi: it is 6:09, and this is a huge supercell that produced at least one tornado in illinois. you can see that slowly moving over. this was captured earlier in the week. , conditions are expected after tornadoes moved over several states, leaving behind a lot of damage. drew: the structure of those cells are really incredible, when those ingredients come together -- and warm air and cold air clash together to create those supercells. accurate home, a cold front is moving through, bringing light to moderate showers this morning. here is the future weather as we plan out your friday. by 8:00 a.m., still tracking light showers throughout the evening. by lunchtime, we are pretty much done with the storm. the cloud will linger for much

conservation with water capture is part of the curriculum. so it is a demonstration system, in addition to actually providing the water. kumasi: also in sonoma county, a -- la crema windery in -- winery in windsor is also collecting rainwater. it has already collected 125 gallons since installed in 2021. the winery uses it in the refrigeration system to cool down the facility in the summer. julian: today, state lawmakers and local fishermen will talk about the impact of canceling the california salmon season. a federal regulatory group voted yesterday to close the season until spring of 2024 because of record low numbers of fish. during a news conference today, officials will outline a plan to seek disaster relief. jared huffman and nancy pelosi will both be in attendance. if you are planning outdoor home projects this beautiful weekend that might involve digging this

julian: record highs in the sierra, a family warning about dangers that come with the snow. jason kasem, a father and a

husband, was killed at his mountain home when he went out to hike to a structure attached to the home to put more gas in the generator. his sister-in-law says while he was doing that, a snow bank collapsed, trapping him inside. after all -- after several minutes, fuel from the generator cost jason to lose consciousness. his wife try to save him and his children called 911, but it was too late. >> he was a really good dad, and friend, brother-in-law. he is going to be so missed. julian: jason's family hopes his death can serve as a reminder to stay safe in the snow, and be safe around those power generators and toxic fumes. new at 6:00, the san francisco board of supervisors wants to better protect workers from unlawful layoffs. it unanimously approved an ordinance after nearly 50 twitter custodians were abruptly fired back in september, when twitter cut ties with a

janitorial company. the city manager is authorized to build -- to bring charges against companies that terminate jobs abruptly. protection for planned parenthood. the city that is paying for specially trained security guards for the organization. and demands from a local starbucks worker to unionize. we will take a live look outside and we are waiting for the rain to break and some clear skies for a bit of weekend. and a beautiful good friday.

not quite pre-pandemic levels. julian: and a live look at oracle park. it is opening-day for the giants. it is a wet start to the day. you can see the tarp covering the diamond. we have amanda del castillo at the park. we are tracking the rain and what we can expect for the rain and the easter holiday weekend. kumasi: good morning. it is april 7. julian: we're so excited to talk about this beautiful weekend forecast. drew: a little wet out there this morning. it does not last long. it is really just scattered light showers, and this front is quickly moving through, so we are pretty much on the tail end of this storm system that is going to wind down before noon today. on the storm impact scale, it is a level 1 light storm, with the biggest impact being slick roads. in wet view from the exploratorium camera. showers.

i noon, the showers are ending. that the clouds will linger for the rest of the day, with temperatures in the 50's and 60's. a closer look at the rain and the game day forecast coming up in just a few minutes. kumasi: new at 6:00, video shows a group of people dressed in black with face covering strength to break into a dispensary in san francisco overnight. this was on 13th street near vanness. witnesses tell us they heard a crash and saw a car back into a door. that is when they say multiple people got out and started hitting the door with what looked like sledgehammers and a saw. you can see the damage left behind. it is not known if anyone was arrested. we are reaching out to sfpd for more information. julian: a former fire commissioner is in the hospital after being attacked with a metal pipe in the marina. the attack possibly followed a confrontation with a group of un-housed people. ryan curry is live in the newsroom with more.

ryan: good morning. the man was hit several times in the head shortly after leaving his mother's house wednesday night. a friend of his says the injuries are serious. that friend shared this video. he is on the left. the attack might have been retaliation for asking a group of homeless men in front of his mother's house to leave. he says when he went to confront that group, they attacked him. >> he asked them to move. apparently, as he had bent down, one of them came from behind and struck him with a metal pipe in the back of the head. he went down. they continued to strike him and lasted his face with a knife. marina district. the friend says he fears for the safety of all people in all neighborhoods in san francisco. police say a 24-year-old man is under arrest for the attack. they have not commented on the motive.

live in the newsroom, abc 7 news. kumasi: san francisco's drug overdose crisis has shown no signs of slowing down. according to a report from the chief medical examiner, or than 130 people -- more than 130 people died of an overdose in january and in february. in the past two years, nearly 650 people died of an overdose. it is a number that could be exceeded if this year's pace keeps up. people gathered in the mission district, calling on local leaders to do more to get drugs off the streets and to get people into treatment. abc 7 spoke with a woman whose son is battling a fentanyl addiction. >> i started to say same things. we are stronger working together. kumasi: establishing safe consumption

sites, also known as overdose prevention sites. these are places people can go to use their drugs under supervision in case they overdose. tara campbell has been covering the opioid crisis extensively. she traveled to north america's first ever safe injection site in vancouver, canada, and put together a documentary on how it works. you can watch that on-demand on our streaming tv app. julian: president biden is slamming a contentious vote by tennessee state lawmakers. the republican super majority voted to expel them a credit to join protesters on the chamber floor, demanding gun reform after that deadly school shooting in nashville last month. jobina is at the live desk with the latest on this developing story. jobina: the president is not holding back, accusing tennessee state publicans of choosing to silence and expel democrats instead of debating the merits of gun safety legislation. in a party-line vote, democrat

represented as justin pearson and justin jones were expelled from their seats. expulsion votes are rare in tennessee and have been used in the past to eject members for unlawful misconduct. fellow democrat gloria johnson narrowly escaped expulsion of the super majority. johnson, questioned on why was not expelled. >> you cannot ignore the color of our skin. >> the black lawmakers get expelled and the white woman does not? that is a statement in and of itself. jobina: tennessee's speaker denied race played a factor. they accused the trio of disorderly behavior and violating the quorum because they joined protesters on the chamber floor, pressuring lawmakers to take up gun reform after a mass shooting that killed three students and three staffers at nashville's government school.

the expelled democrats are eligible to run again for their seats in a special election. julian: this morning, the battle over rights for transgender people is escalating. president biden now proposing a law that blocks colleges from banning trans athletes. kumasi: this is in direct response to republican states that have been moving to ban trans athletes. currently, there are at least 16 states that prohibit trans athletes from competing on at least the high school level. what they note about the president's proposal is it will allow exceptions. julian: this has to be viewed in the larger debate about lgbtq+ rights that have taken center stage in the last year. according to the aclu, a record number of anti-lgbtq+ bills have been introduced. it is tracking 450 one existing pieces of legislation nationwide. so far, 24 of those have been signed into law in 11 states. the white house has this reaction.

>> with the enactment of a new law in indiana, 14 states have now banned gender affirming health care, while some of these laws are currently blocked by courts. this is a dangerous -- a dangerous attack on the rights of parents to make the best health care decisions for their own kids. julian: here is the thing. many of these bills are targeting education and what is taught in the classroom, especially when it comes to the discussion of gender identity and sexuality. kumasi: the way the legislation led to a massive rally in march. this weekend, there is "drag up fight back." >> we have to show any politicians making these rules that this is not ok. kumasi: weekend rallies are planned in other cities, including los angeles. a group of young starbucks workers in sunnyvale is calling for better wages and more hours.

this is following starbucks in santa cruz which became the first to unionize in california. they say getting paid $18 per hour is not livable in this area. >> our generation is running out of options. we are facing an economy we just cannot keep up with. going somewhere else is not going to fix the problem. kumasi: starbucks has accused of antiunion activity. last week, ceo howard schultz said the company has not violated any labor laws regarding unions. the national labor relations board said to date 368 starbucks stores in the country have tallied ballots in union elections. 296 of those voted yes. however, starbucks has yet to reach a contract agreement with any of those stores. julian: there are new developments nearly two years after the death of jasper, the toddler killed after a shootout in oakland back in 2021.

alameda district county attorney pamela price says she is reviewing the charges against the three men accused in the murder. the announcement means price could -- emphasis on could -- move away from the murder charges filed by her predecessor, maisie o'malley. all suspects are expected in court for a filament a rehearing this month. kumasi: two bay area rebounds are rebounding, but not quite where we were before covid. san jose and oakland airports remain far below the height they reached prior to the coronavirus outbreak. the mercury news looked into the number of travelers going through both hubs. to put things into perspective, more than 15.6 million people used san jose international in 2019, but right now passenger activity is about 24% below that. at oakland international, something very similar. down about 14% below that 13.3 million passengers in 2019.

kumasi: welcome back. the city of san francisco could soon pay for planned parenthood to be protected by paid security guards. catherine stephani believes this will make sure patients safely access resources they need, according to "the examiner." $400,000 of funding was added to the city budget this year for security. if approved, it will pay for security guards to keep watch at the location 60's a week. kumasi: a new grant program is hoping to get people back to downtown san francisco. outdoor downing. the partnership has launched a program to give funding to eligible restaurants to upgrade sidewalk dining spaces. improvements include furniture,

lighting, and planters. the grants will come up to -- cover up to $5,000 of the total cost. julian: time for your morning many were part. the march jobs report shows job growth slowed last month. u.s. employers added a solid to hunt a 36,000 jobs in march, despite rate hikes. the unemployment rate fell from 3.6% last month to 3.5 percent this month, according to the bureau of labor statistics. no reaction from investors this morning. the stock market is closed today because of good friday. an update to a story we first brought you yesterday on abc seven mornings. this happen fast. sweetgreen have agreed to change the name of one of their salads in response to a lawsuit chipotle filed, claiming sweetgreen infringed on a trademark of its chicken burrito bowl. sweetgreen renamed it the chicken and chipotle pepper bowl.
