scene. >> reporter: what we are in the midst of is a multifront es ka escalation of violence. there's also clashes on the temple mount in jerusalem. just this morning in the west bank two israeli women shot and killed, a third critically wounded. overnight israeli jets and palestinian militants trading fire in gaza and lebanon, as violence escalated from fistacuffs in jerusalem's temple mount to one of the largest barrages of fire in years. this morning israel saying palestinian militants killed two israeli women, critically wounding a third in a shooting attack in the west bank. earlier friday israel's military saying it launched strikes in southern lebanon. another raid targeting the gaza

strip. israel's air force showing missiles hitting sites they also belonged to the group. israel's sorties followed a heavy barrage of rockets from lebanon streaking across the sky into northern israel on thursday. israel's iron dome defense system intercepting many of the missiles, though at least five made it through, this one hitting a bank and setting up that thick plume of smoke. early this morning dozens of additional rockets fired from gaza, targeting southern israel. in all israel says palestinian militants launched about 80 rockets in the past 24 hours. tension in the region soared after violent clashes during ramadan in islam's holiest it does not see israel or the palestinian militant groups have an appetite for that right now.

the wrench in that could be the shooting attack this morning in the west bank. that could jeopardize efforts at deescalation. this is the first all cocide. george? >> thanks very much. rebecca? we turn to the bitter political divide in tennessee. the state house of representatives voting to expel two democratic lawmakers for their role in a gun control protest at the state capitol. it is the first partisan expulsion in the state's modern history. alex perez is in nashville with more. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. some dramatic moments here on the house floor at the capitol. the ousted representatives say they were acting on behalf of their constituents who they say are angry legislature won't take up gun reform. >> expelled from the house of representatives. >> reporter: overnight, republican-led tennessee state house of representatives, in an

unprecedented move, voting to expel two of its members, only the third time since the civil war that members have been ousted. >> the representatives address what is a compelling eloquent statement of why he needs to be expelled. >> reporter: representatives justin jones and justin pearson both ousted for ptestgonol thes was representative gloria johnson, who's white. republicans also attempted to expel johnson for her participation in the protest, but that vote failed. >> my friends in school all call me little miss law and order because i'm a rule follower.

i know that rules sometimes have to be broken. sometimes you have to get in good trouble. >> reporter: tensions boiling over on the house floor during the vote from both sides. the representatives outrage stemming from that shooting at a nashville christian elementary school, killing three 9-year-olds and three faculty members. gloria johnson was the only representative to have defense attorneys speak on her behalf on the house floor during that vote as the ousted representatives could rerun for their seats in a special election if they so choose. rebecca? >> as you said, alex, only the third time since the civil war since we have seen anything like that. alex perez, thank you. to the white house now, a new report acknowledging the chaotic withdrawal from afghanistan should have been handled differently. i sat down with the president just days after the withdrawal. you don't think this could have been handled better in any way?

no mistakes? >> no. i don't think it could have been handled in a way that -- we're gonna go back in hindsight and look, but the idea that somehow there was a way to have gotten out without chaos ensuing. i don't know how that happened. i don't know how that happened. >> for you that was always priced into the decision? >> yes. exactly what happened was not priced in but i knew they were going to have an enormous -- look, one of the things we didn't know is what the taliban would do, in terms of trying to keep people from getting out, what they would do. >> let's go to mary bruce. mary, they have now reversed course on this. >> reporter: george, the white house now concedes they should have acted sooner but this long awaited report does not explicitly say that mistakes were made. when i asked repeatedly, the white house won't say if the president has any regrets now, just that lessons were learned. they are putting much of the

blame for this withdrawal on the trump administration. this morning the white house is defending the chaotic end to america's longest war. acknowledging after scenes like these, thousands rushing to flee kabul and the attack at the airport that killed 13 u.s. service members that the u.s. should have started the evacuation sooner. but the white house is also pinning much of the blame for the disastrous withdrawal on the trump administration, arguing their hands were tied by trump's deal with the taliban to withdraw u.s. troops by the spring of 2021. >> it is also undeniable that decisions made and the lack of planning done by the previous administration significantly limited options available to him. >> reporter: then president biden called the evacuation an extraordinary success. the white house still defending it now. >> for all this talk of chaos, i just didn't see it. not from my perch.

>> reporter: at the time the administration was stunned that it took just 11 day force the taliban to regain control of afghanistan. the report says the u.s. now thinks it was inevitable. that there was no scenario, except a permanent and significantly expanded u.s. military presence, that would have changed the trajectory. >> what is your message to the veteran, to the families of the fallen who may read that and wonder, what was the point? >> just because the mission changed over time under previous administrations and leadership, doesn't mean anybody who served in afghanistan doesn't have something to be proud of. doesn't have -- sorry. doesn't have service to this country that they can take with them the rest of their lives. >> reporter: now, overnight former president trump pushing back, saying biden is to blame. his former top officials say the current administration is trying to simply rewrite history. now pressed on this, the white

house is clear, despite pointing a finger and blaming the trump administration for much of this, they say ultimately president biden is commander in chief and he does bear responsibility. george? >> mary bruce, thanks. now to the fire storm over clarence thomas for accepting luxury travel around the world for more than 20 years paid for by a gop donor. senior national correspondent terry moran has more. >> reporter: supreme court justices are often invited to travel around the world, to teach, to attend conference, to visit with friends, but the lavishness and the frequency of the vacations justice clarence thomas accepted transparency. >> island hopping on a super yacht in eupbd kn for more than two decades, clarence thomas enjoyed luxury

travel every year, sometimes traveling the world aboard a yacht without disclosing any of to it the public. an expensive secret that is now landing the conservative justice in hot water. the travel reported by the nonprofit journalism outlet pro publica never appeared in thomas' financial disclosures. thomas' host, harlin crowe has not had any business before the court but his business and access to the court's most senior conservative member have sparked concern. thomas and the supreme court have not commented, but in the past, thomas has portrayed himself as a man of simple taste. >> i prefer the rv parks. i prefer the wal-mart parking lots to the beaches and things like that. there's something normal to me about it. i come from regular stock. >> reporter: in a statement, crow said he and justice thomas have been close friends since

1996 and they never discuss pending cases, adding he never sought to influence thomas, calling the trips no different from the hospitality we have extended to our many other dear friends. the supreme court has no formal code of ethics and no enforcement mechanism for any potential wrongdoing. congressional democrats are calling to change that. >> there's absolutely no reason why the supreme court shouldn't be subject to a code of conduct just like every other federal judge. >> reporter: chief justice john roberts has made it clear he doesn't think congress has a constitutional authority to impose conduct rules on the justices. instead, the chief justice has asked his colleagues to, quote, consult with the rules for lower court judges. george? >> okay. thank you very much. let's get more on this from dan abrams. i guess the question now, is that law going to be tested, the one that does require disclosure of trip likes this? >> is this an ethical violation?

sure. sit a technical violation of the law that applies to federal judges? it sure seems it is. but now the question is, okay. so what now? as terry pointed out, the supreme court has never even formally accepted the idea that the justices are subject to those particular laws. even if they are, the question is, what is the enforcement mechanism? who is going to punish them? as of right now, it seems the only way to punish a supreme court justice in a case like this is through impeachment. >> i think what surprised so many people is that the supreme court justices don't even have ethics guidelines that apply to lower courts. >> exactly, right. so their position, as of right now is, yes, these laws apply to the lower court, yes, all the federal judges have to apply this. we know those things -- >> take a look at it. >> we know they're out there and they're important. we're going to consult with them. it's sort of crazy, right? the idea the most important

justice, who you would think are the ones people would want to influence the most, where ethics would matter the most, don't feel that they are necessarily subject to the same laws. again, the question is, what happens? >> i think the chief justice will feel enough pressure to say anything? >> nope. i think it's going to require at least another step here. meaning congress is going to have to hold hearings. as of right now justice thomas isn't talk. justice roberts isn't talking. i don't know that they are going to because of the way that there is this lack of enforcement. >> dan abrams, thank you very much. rebecca? we turn to the highly anticipated jobs report out this morning. it's a key piece of data that could signal whether the economy is slowing down. it's an economics report card. elizabeth is in washington with the latest. >> reporter: this is a critical moment for the american work force. the job market has been red hot in recent months.

this morning's report shows signs it is starting to clear off. 236,000 jobs were added to the economy in march in line with expectation and a slowdown from january and february doesn't talk about banks. inflation is trending lower but still historically high. rent prices up more than 8% in the past year. groceries up 10%. the average price for a dozen eggs $4 now, compared to $2 at this time last year. in all, american households are still paying an extra about $400 every month for the same goods and services compared to this time last year simply because of inflation. rebecca. >> all right, elizabeth. thanks for following it for us. turning now to round 2 of the masters teeing off this morning at augusta national golf club. tiger woods among those vying for the coveted green jacket.

then claimed he was poisoned. >> reporter: the 45-year-old is charged with three felony counts of poisoning and one count of domestic battery. the orange county district attorney claiming this shows the mother of two pouring a draino like substance into her husband's tea intending to cause him pain and suffering. yu's attorney pushing back saying his client was trying to kill her in the kitchen. >> the indictment said she was not caught once, but three times on camera trying to poison her husband. how do you defend that? >> she does pour the draino in the cup three times to kill the ants. she absolutely poured the draino in the cup. >> i have never heard of a way to prevent ants from putting draino into somebody else's drink. >> reporter: last april chen began noticing a strange taste to the tea so he set up a hidden camera. the cameras capture yu pouring

how one student brought gummys containing an unidentified cntrolled substance to school and shared women this several other 5th graders. after seven students began to feel unwell, the school writing, fire, rescue ando further asses students, determining the symptoms aligned with the ingest shun of a controlled substance. five of the seven children were then rushed to the hospital. while the substances have not been identified, authorities say when they arrived at the scene, the students were being treated for medics for alleged consumption. >> kids are much smaller. the dose they get are meant for an adult. they're enticing. edible looks like candy and brownies. by the time a young child has eaten as much of an edible product that they want, they can get a high dose. >> reporter: as edibles become

george, we turn now to the latest on mortgage rates falling for the fourth week in a row according to due data from freddie mac. will reeve is here. i like to call this turning the table. >> perfect. >> so, will, mortgage rates falling. what about buying a house? >> experts say spring is traditionally the best time to buy a home falling mortgage rates sounds like great news. the average for a 30 year fixed rate still over 6%. that's about two points higher than it was a year ago. there's still a lot of obstacles out there. the two biggest, affordability and availability. there's sky high demand for homes, but inventory is low. that puts first time home buyers at a disadvantage. rates have not fallen enough to incentivize homeowners to list their homes. end result is kind of a gridlock that will keep prices high. >> analysts say that will last at least through this year.

borrowers are facing the issue of, rates are going up, and you have this banking crisis. that could have impact, too. >> there's head winds in the market. roller coaster. rates hit a high of 7%, then went down and climbed in february. this all as the federal reserve battles inflation. so will this trend continue? if the fed keeps hiking those interest rates, that could make borrowing more expensive. experts say the recent banking meltdown could also make it harder to borrow. on the other hand, if we see a recession, that could have the opposite effect. it's still unclear what's going to happen. >> what can people do? >> there's a whole lot they can do. all that being said, home prices are showing signs of softening. there's opportunity for potential buyers to take advantage while the rates are slightly lower. got to think big picture. just because there is opportunity out there isn't the right opportunity for you? that's the main question to be asking. >> and you've got to be ready to sit in that home for five years

welcome, guys. >> we're thrilled to be here. >> let's start with you. obviously, this goes beyond stats and the numbers that people wear. how did you decide? number of things are controversial, from bars, places like barber shops. people are going to disagree with some. how did you come up with the idea of let's tell numbers to tell these stories? >> it came up because in a conversation after the show that we work on "the get up" show on espn. several of us made the observation that a lot of the greatest football player, the quarterback, all wore the same jersey number. someone said they all wore number 12, but who owns the number 12? that is where the idea went off in my head. i called hembo, the best researcher. i said we're going to do a book, decide who owns every number. you're going to research it. i'm going to write it. next thing we know, we're on "good morning america." >> tell me about the number 60. people will think greatest rivalry of all time. i think magic johnson, larry

babe ruth, wayne gretzky, the greatest history in the north american sports. the differential between he and who ever is number two is much different than it is between the number one in any other sport and number two in that particular sport. >> as somebody who's playing today, tiger woods, getting the number 97. what's the significance of 97? >> that's the year when he won the masters for the first time. it did so many things in sports. it changed the sport of golf. there was such significance over and above the actual golf piece of that to tiger woods winning that particular tournament. but also because of the greatness that ensued, i think you can almost divide the history of golf into the time before he won the masters and the time after. we wanted to be able to give athletes who didn't wear jersey numbers numbers. so we needed one for tiger woods. one of the greatest athletes in history.

97 felt like the right choice. >> was it 27 you had the most difficulty decideing? >> 21. roberto clemente wore 21, deion sanders wore 21, tim duncan wore 21. that was perhaps the most difficult choice we had to make. do you want to give it away? >> we chose roberto clemente because of his historical significance. he is one of the five most important people in baseball history. baseball's humanitarian award every year is called the roberto clemente award. while all of them, i think, were equally great players we decided clemente was the greatest legend. >> what do you think is the most contentious point in the whole book? either that michael jordan is not number 1? >> i think, like you just asked about number 21. there will be so chapters that you turn to and perhaps be disappointed. maybe number 4 or 7 or 8 isn't the person you would necessarily select. it was our sort of charge to be able to make every defense as
