that could drastically change the sentencing for the man accused in the shooting death of a young boy or oakland highway. . thank you for joining us. i am dan ashley. ama: and i am ama daetz. this came after his family met with the d.a. and in the wake of the controversial messaging towards the asian american community that some took offense to. dan: we sat down with jasper's mother in the story will see only on abc7. reporter: when i sat down with she and her husband, they expressed concerns over the county d.a. price for such a new guidelines, not allowing prosecutors to file or require defendants plea to sentencings. >> my main concern is still the same, it still worried that there will not be the full extent of sentencing. reporter: jasper wu was sure and -- shot and killed. during roving gunfire between rival gangs on 880. prior to the meeting, he

obtained emailers which price sent to members of the asian american community, and county supervisors. in one, she claims certain vocal members of the asian american community and local media, including reporter dion lim, misled the public. in another emailed, she addresses chinese communities, calling many misinformed, and blamed them for spreading misinformation. something that did not sit well with ms. wu. >> i don't think we are the chinese community, we were not misinformed. reporter: or the national asian-pacific islander prosecutors association, a group of mostly federal, local and state prosecutors that issued this letter denouncing price's messaging to the public. >> it was a little condescending. it was discussing how some people, referencing asian americans or chinese-americans earlier, do not not the basic constitutional law and basic rights and basic law like innocent until proven guilty. i felt a bit offended.

dion: the organization also invited d.a. price to meet. >> we don't want to be divisive, we want to come to a solution where there is justice for jasper, justice for everybody that is involved in this together case, and in all cases. dion: price also released a series of videos on social media after meeting the wu family, calling the media out again. >> some people, including reporters, are saying things that are not based on facts. dion: in a second video, she expresses sympathy for jasper's murder, but also claims that case is being used to attack her office. >> the kind of racist messages my office has received and directed at me personally, is unprecedented. dion: while ms. wu was hesitant to comment on d.a. price, she asked for one thing. >> the maximum sentencing to the fullest extent. dion: i reached out to d.a. prices office for comment and was referred back to the video.

in alameda county, dion lim, abc7 news. ama: in san francisco, an attack on a former department of corrections officer is put in question again on safety in the city streets. tonight, she remains in the hospital. abc7 news reporter leah melendez has more on the attack and the video of the man arrested. lyanne: cellphone video shows the man san francisco police say virtually assaulted the former fire department commissioner with some type of metal object. >> here and around the corner, in front of the gas station. he almost beat the man into the street with all these cars passing by. it wasn't in one location, it was moving. lyanne:several people witnessed the attack which took place on magnolia and laguna street in the laguna district within a few paces from where the officer lived. the man arrested is homeless,

and neighbors hearsay he befriended these two other homeless people who have made this area their home. we spoke with one of them who give us more details about the weapon said to be used by the alleged attacker. >> it was not a crow-bar. reporter: what was it? >> it was two pieces of metal that have been broken. lyanne:he was with him and claims they were sprayed with bear mace because permanganate did not like that they were hanging out near his home. but why hit somebody over the head and attack >> because it was disrespectful. who was disrespectful? >> the boa bald man. lyanne:don? is that enough to beat him up? >> sometimes. >> these types of brazen attacks are the types of things that have people anxious about what is happening. lyanne: while other crime statistics have gone down or

remain steady, the police chief is right. according to the abc 7 news neighborhood safety tracker, so far this year the number of robberies has gone up 50% compared to this time last year. assaults are also on the rise by 2.2%. carm with injuries. were interrupted by someone incoherent. >> san francisco does not have a mechanism to take care of people who are having mental health issues. and here we have a very good example of this. >> i am from the east coast. i moved here because i love the city, and it is becoming more and more disturbing to live here. district issued a statement in which she says, please know that i share your outrage and commitment to creating a safer san francisco. stephanie was one of the supervisors who supported allocating an additional $25

friends. baseball fans are taking part. to the san francisco giants home opener honestly, just for convenience, parking, um that's really the biggest thing, but when they got to the richmond bart station, there was a 30 minute delay hopefully doesn't take us too long. i know the game starts at 1 30, so probably going to be a little late, but that's fine. abc seven news bart says it was short five train operators friday morning to on the green line from berryessa to daly city three on the red line. richmond, sfo. that was a big problem for tony anderson, who landed at sfo actually thought i was going to get stuck in daly city because i read that some of the richmond trains were canceled, but i need to get to richmond so they can catch capitol corridor to get back home. yes so it's just kind of had to time it right, declined to be interviewed for this story. but according to a recent quarterly report, bart says, quote staff shortages make up the vast majority of operations related train delays . in fact, between october and

december of 2022 cancelations caused 14% of bart delays. of those 92% were due to staffing shortages when it comes to punctuality. 13% of late trains were caused by staff shortages in the same time period. you know, it is frustrating, especially when you're trying to get to work. you know when you're trying to meet up with a loved one and time is really tight. the report indicates that barton is on pace to reach four staffing. in late 2023 in richmond hassan. abc seven news police are investigating a gunfire that officers say started with the theft of a catalytic converter, which is the big problem. this incident happened just before six o'clock this morning on mountain boulevard near highway 13. they say thieves opened fire on a person who saw them steal the catalytic converter of a car parked in that area. the victim was not hit by gunfire. thank goodness. us cycling champion

ethan boys was struck and killed by a vehicle while cycling in san francisco's presidio earlier this week. it happened on our gwala boulevard in washington street tuesday afternoon, according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, a witness saw the vehicle swerve into the opposite lane where boys was cycling boys suffered life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital where he died. san francisco bike coalition is demanding protected bike lanes in the presidio. i liked it, uh, you know the day of the accident shortly before it happened, and it's generally pretty safe, but as you can see, there's no dedicated protected bike lane definitely makes you think about whether you could have been the person that was there. a vigil will be held where the incident happened in the presidio this evening at seven loved ones have created a growing memorial with as you see a ghost bike, their invoices, memory. we'll be right back. public safety is something we all care about. now our

labor market is cooling down the march jobs report from the bureau of labor statistics is the 1st and 12 months to come in below expectations. reporter ivan rodriguez breaks down the numbers and what it means for the feds yearlong campaign to chill inflation, us employers added 236,000 jobs in march, coming in below expectations a labor market cool down, that could actually be a good sign. the fed isn't going to publicly say we want job losses. but i think the fed knows and all the economists there that know that if in play if the unemployment rate says the 3.5% you're not likely to calm or tame inflation industries like leisure and hospitality, healthcare and government continued to lead the way in job gains. the job losses are coming from sectors like manufacturing and construction. still the labor market has remained stubbornly resilient. the unemployment rate dropped to 3.5% average hourly earnings grew 0.3% from the month before. and the cool down in hiring may not be enough to stop the federal reserve from raising interest rates again next month.
