official because we're witnessing things that really have never been done before. in our criminal justice system. police arrest the suspect, as you know, and the district attorney prosecute. it's a vital rule. district attorneys have so much influence and power that many members of the public may be unaware of people are really recognizing that these local d a positions are very important. alameda county voters elected pamela price last november, the civil rights attorney campaigned with a commitment to progressive policies. pamela price stands for integrity. independence transparency, equity and accountability in three months in office, she has been praised . glad that we are kicking off the her term in a in the right way, and pamela price has been criticized. tonight we are hearing from people unhappy with what the d a is doing and how she's doing it. price recently took the extraordinary step of announcing and a social media
6:01 pm
video that she will try to prevent a veteran judge from ever hearing a criminal case again. can she do that to abc? seven news i team reporter dan noise has been looking into it, and you're here with the info for us now. dan and dan once again, pam price has refused my request for an interview, but she's trying a new tactic. posting recorded statements on social media that don't allow for any follow up questions. several longtime veterans in the field of criminal justice. lawyers and judges. tell me they've never seen anything like this district attorney going on social media and attacking a judge judge mark mccann, in overstepped his boundaries as a judicial officer. price says that mark mccann ins appear in court judge for 10 years appointed by governor jerry brown before that, in alameda county prosecutor for 16 years should hear no more criminal cases. my office will file a motion to disqualify him from hearing any criminal cases being prosecuted by our office because
6:02 pm
judge mccann in rejected the plea deal, price offered alonso log wood accused of three murders, one during a carjacking robbery, a murder for hire and killing a witness set to testify against his stepbrother. he faces 75 years to life in prison if convicted. price offered him 15 years on a single voluntary manslaughter charge, and this week after judge mckinnon denied prices motion to remove himself or bias, she announced she is going to prevent him from hearing any criminal cases. the judge is supposed to be an impartial referee, managing cases that come before him. you are trying to tear this system down. from the inside out. michael cardoza worked as a prosecutor in l. a san francisco and alameda county before becoming a defense attorney, he explains price could actually prevent judge mccann in from working on criminal cases because of california, code of civil procedure. 1 70.6, an attorney for the defense or prosecution, has one chance to disqualify a judge before trial

starts. and then we stand that attorneys stand and take a note. so we don't believe we are going to get a fair trial in front of judge noise judgments. okay, i will send it to someone else. we don't have to explain why we do not have to explain why we just don't want you for whatever reason, so if price puts out this blanket order to her attorney's judge, mckinnon could never see another criminal case. he'd have to retire or start hearing. civil matters has, um, i think adopted a scorched earth policy with regard to the judge and basically, she and doing so has attacked his reputation, all of which i think is undeserved. cordell was the first female black judge in northern california. she tells me she has never heard of a district attorney making this move against the superior court judge. what about the next judge who gets a case from this? d a. who says? no i'm not going to approve this plea bargain and explaining why i'm not going to do it. then what's going to
6:04 pm
happen? the d a is gonna say okay, you're next up and now we're not going to allow filings. in your court. i'm very concerned, and i hope this doesn't set a precedent. judge cordell tells me the situation may lead to a change in state law, prosecutors and prices own officer raising another issue with me could her social media video attacking the judge? predator gis the jury in the upcoming trial? well, that's set to start in 10 days, so we'll be watching this closely, clearly a lot more to come. as we've said so unusual and unprecedented. exactly. absolutely. thanks, dan. all right, turning now to a second case that's also drawing negative attention to the district attorney's office. it involves the family of jasper woo. the toddler was asleep in his car seat when he was killed, struck by a stray bullet in a rolling gun battle between rival gangs on 80 in oakland. the shooting happened in november of 2021. his family spoke only to abc seven news anchor dion lim today about a meeting they had with the d a this week. which left them unsettled. when i sat
6:05 pm
down with an woo and her husband one month ago, they expressed concerns over alameda county d. a pam prices new guidelines, not allowing prosecutors to file or require defendants plea to sentencing enhancements. those worries were made tenfold this week after price met with the wolf family on tuesday concerns still the same still worried that it won't be the full extent of sentencing. jasper was tragically shot and killed on november 6th 2021 during with law enforcement call rolling gunfire between rival gangs on 8 80. prior to that meeting, i also obtained a series of emails , which price sent to members of the asian american community and county supervisors. in one she claims certain vocal members of the local chinese community and media, including reporter dion lim misled the public. in another email. one week later, price addresses chinese communities, calling many misinformed and blamed them for spreading misinformation. it's something that did not sit well with miss wu. i don't think we
6:06 pm
are or the chinese community. we were not misinformed or the national asian pacific islander prosecutors association, a group of mostly federal, local and state prosecutors, which issued this letter, denouncing prices, emails and messaging to the public. it was a little condescending. it was discussing how people some people, and it was referencing asian americans or chinese americans earlier. ah i don't know the basic constitutional law and basic rights and basic laws like innocent until proven guilty, and so i really felt a little bit offended, also invited d a price to meet. we don't want to be divisive. we don't want to split things up. we want to all work together and come to a solution where there is justice for jasper justice for everybody that's involved in in this particular case and in all cases , price also released a series of videos on social media after meeting with the womb. a family defending her office and calling the media out again. some people, including reporters. are
6:07 pm
saying things that are not based on facts in a second video price expressed sympathy for jasper's murder, but also claimed the case was being used to attack her office kind of racist messages that my office has received and directed at me personally is unprecedented, while miss wu was hesitant to comment too much about her feelings on d a price, she asks for one thing i would like to see the maximum sentencing to the full extent be charged and just purse case. i reached out to pam prices office for comment and was referred back to her social media video in alameda county. dion lim, abc seven news and they change dot org petition to recall pamela price is closing in on its goal of 10,000 signatures last summer. voters in san francisco recall district attorney chase a boudin. his progressive policies were criticized for being soft on crime will keep an eye on the recall effort in alameda county and decisions made by the d a s

6:13 pm
say segovia used her personal and office computers to order the drugs and agreed to distribute them elsewhere in the country. the pos says they had no knowledge of it and have been conducting an internal investigation. on friday, they announced the first phase of it. is now over. as a result, we have terminated. her employment would not elaborate on what findings in that investigation led to the firing. we reached out to segovia as attorney and have not heard back. the next phase of the investigation will be bringing in an outside. independent investigators are looking to identify. someone with indisputable record someone that's an expert to be able to come in. and take a look at our overall. protocols are procedures, things that we have in place. could there have been something that was in place. that would have identified this type of behavior sooner. police accountability groups and human rights advocates raised questions wednesday about the years long drug smuggling case.

6:56 pm
this week. recent statistics indicate violent crime is not nearly as bad in san francisco as it is in more than a dozen other large cities. that's good news. but it is cold comfort. of course, if it happens to you or someone you care about the drug epidemic, and the homeless problem is out of control. you know that and car break ins, robberies, shoplifting, petty theft. all too common and not being adequately addressed. people who live in the city complained about it. people who live in other parts of the bay area, worry about it and avoid coming in. what really matters. police and political leaders need to fight the crime and fight a perception that like it or not, is the reality. i always love to hear from you. let me know what you think. follow me on twitter and facebook at dan ashley, abc seven. that is it for this edition of abc. seven news. we thank you so much for joining us tonight. i'm on the dates and i'm dan ashley for sandy patel, chris alvarez and all of us here. we appreciate
