building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions . this is abc seven news. the national spotlight on safety in san francisco in response to the stabbing death of tech entrepreneur bob lee mayor london breed is now going on the offensive. good evening and thanks for joining us i'm dion lim, you're watching abc seven news at 11. we are looking at solutions tonight, focusing on reducing crime in san francisco first to look at san francisco's homicide rate. fbi and police crime data from 2021 actually show san francisco close to the bottom of the list of major cities in america with 6.9 homicides per 100,000 people now for perspective. the city with the highest homicide rates, st louis has 66.5 homicides per 100,000 people. at 11, abc seven

news reporter tara campbell has been following the story joins us live in studio and terra. tell us what exactly does the mayor say about people's perceptions when it comes to the safety of our city? yeah well, dion, the mayor says progress is being made in keeping the streets safe, including starting to see some results in police recruitment, and she has an update on a major move to help get drug dealers. off the streets from a brutal attack on a former san francisco fire commissioner to the stabbing death of tech exec bob lee mayor london breed setting the city's safety record straight saturday . i want to start by, you know, making it clear um, that, um you know, both of these cases, the information is still not yet public. they're under investigation. the mayor cautioning people not to jump to conclusions when some of the facts of many of these cases come out. people are going to be surprised h a

sshe of c. it is really heightened events like this as well, as you know, people who are jumping to conclusions about what they think is actually happening, and despite the safety perception, the mayor says progress is being made, pointing to the city's moved 25 million more dollars into police overtime. what that does is continue to allow us to do our jobs here and to make sure that we're not only out on the streets and we can respond to calls for service, but it provides us the ability to do these investigations around the clock. the cities at least 500 officers short, but the mayor says recruiting efforts are starting to pay off. including a bump in starting salary. we're starting to see those applications come in the mayor, also pointing to a major move last week, asking the federal government to help crack down on the open air drug market saturday, suggesting the request will be met. it looks as though

um we are probably going to get , able to make iteen clear what that entails. and much of that drug dealing is on the streets of the tenderloin supervise. is er dean's district. there were stabbings and shootings in my district in the tenderloin over this last week as well, including a homicide. so you know, this is obviously incredibly disturbing . we need to really go aggressively after especially the open air drug dealing in the tenderloin, but i think when that support kicks in, it's going to be a new day in san francisco. i did reach out to the mayor's office, asking for more details on the federal government's help in cracking down on the open air drug market . we have yet to hear back so we'll have to wait to learn what exactly is coming down the pike. and when alright. certainly a story. i know you will stay on top of terror many thanks to you. moving on now, police radio audio obtained by our media partners at the sf standard paint a frantic picture of bob

officers accused of misconduct. mayor lamar thorpe says the problem stems from the culture of antioch's please department while i'm outraged by all of this, as every resident should be outraged by this, uh and more concerned and more irritated at the fact that our command staff. uh somehow didn't know about this. so there's systemic failures and leadership here. mayor thorpe issued a video saturday morning calling for an independent audit of the department's internal affairs process. he also wants a review of the hiring in promotions process to eliminate what he called racial policy in both practice and behavior culture at the police department. is a problem. and has long been a huge legal and financial liability for the city. the anti r police department has been under a federal and state criminal investigation for the past year over a broad range of offenses, including alleged fraud, bribery and excessive use of force, the contra costa county district attorney's office says that investigation

then uncovered that the police officers quote exchanged text messages which contain unambiguously and historically racist speech directed towards the suspects. the officers were investigating. at least 20% of the department is on lead for misconduct, so the mayor is 100% right. there's a cultural problem here. nissenbaum is the lawyer representing the family of angelo quinto seen in this video who filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the anti oct police department. he believes it's important that the officers names are released so there can be accountability, especially since one of the officers named is said to be the president of the antioch's lease union, its own union head is involved in sending text messages that that are blatantly racist means that . the entire department requires a major overhaul. police department did not return requests for comment. the lawyer representing the officers says he hasn't seen the text messages yet, so he can't comment on the

case. but in an email to abc seven news, he did state quote i know. the police chief insisted that the city hire an outside investigator as soon as possible. to commence a thorough and objective investigation into this matter and anti assad hassan, abc seven news in the east bay overnight, a cat and mouse game between law enforcement and people taking part in side shows. wow chaotic scene unfolded in richmond near hilltop mall at two in the morning, police tried to clear the intersection and apprehend some of the drivers taking part of the stunts. other side shows broke out in nearby rodeo and in west oakland along 16th and adeline streets. i'll take a look at dangling power pole in fremont shut down much of maori avenue between mission boulevard and cherry street. this happened at about three this afternoon. you can see it appears the top of the pole was just sheared off with wires and

waiting for. for so many weeks, right after all those storms and now finally, some sunny and mild rather going into easter. yes it's pretty cool. pretty mild. look at what's happening in our satellite radar composite image . you can see that the circulation is such that, uh, they're disturbances to our north that are moving into the pacific northwest, but not affecting barry. whether negatively so that means that we've got some mainly clear and mild weather right now and continuing for a while, and the wind surface winds right now are relatively calm. only at the golden gate. are we seeing wind speeds above 10 mph so brisk breezes, but pretty calm, and there's virtually no significant 24 hour temperature change. some locations are one or two degrees milder than this time last night . others are one or two degrees cooler than at this time last night, so very little to talk about their so we'll move along and take a live view from sutro tower. looking out over san francisco under clear skies. it is 52 degrees here in the city, also 52 at oakland, palo alto mountain view 53 at san jose and 45 at half moon bay. lovely view

from the east bay hills camera looking along the bay bridge back towards san francisco. it is currently 47 degrees in santa rosa. so getting a little cool up in the north bay. nevado 50, fairfield 48 low to mid fifties that conquered and livermore and from our rooftop camera here at abc seven. looking across the embarcadero, we present our forecast headlines mostly clear skies overnight. exceptional weather for easter sunday tomorrow, and a cooling trend begins middle of next week. but before we get there, we have some very mild weather coming our way. who's our forecast animation starting at midnight noticed overnight we'll have clear skies all the way until the early morning hours when a few high clouds start to roll in, but those high clouds won't obscure our sons work tomorrow we'll have filtered sunshine and mild conditions. meanwhile overnight, relatively mild as well. no cold weather tonight overnight, low temperatures will drop into the low to mid forties in the north bay, mainly mid forties everywhere else or mid to upper forties in the east bay and down in the south way that

yosemite were both remote and still pristine, and for much of his career, he worked to help keep them that way. now a new exhibit at san francisco's de young museum examines how adam's environmental activism is taking on a new urgency in the age of climate change. is that massive figure with this sort of larger than life reputation at one has to deal with so i'm fascinated to realize how many contemporary artists really are concerned and speaking to environmental issues to climate change, senior curator karen haas says the influence can be seen in the work of those often younger photographers included in the exhibition. contrast adams famous photograph of the moon over a desert landscape, for instance. with the sad clutter of brian shute mats nevada landscape, but what i love about brian's work is that he is looking and very concerned with the fact that we, as a culture seems so often to extract everything that is valuable to

take from the soil to take from the earth. assistant curator sarah mckay says she grew up on the east coast, where many of ansel adams images define the western landscape in popular imagination. but she also notes the evolution and work. like lucas folios beach restoration after el nino waves environmentalism that was kind of started by adams is now really being kind of it's at the forefront of the images in the exhibition. so there are photographers like lucas folio who really are involved with climate scientists and whose main concern is the environment . the exhibition is also an intimate look at ansel adams bay or your roots from the golden gate before the golden gate bridge. to a developing landscape dotted by little boxes on the hillsides, a mix of classic and contemporary views. of landscape. the west and ultimately, the change facing our entire planet. how nice this
