much back home now, as some voters in tennessee react with outrage to the republican led expulsion of two black lawmakers from the state house of representatives. abc has paid the booby is live in nashville this morning as the push to get them back in office starts tomorrow for at least one of them faith. good morning. a good morning to you, jenny, justin pearson and justin jones may no longer be state lawmakers here in tennessee. but jones tells me he's still representing his constituents in exile. weheusn n and we didn't fire him growing community outrage over the expulsion of two democrats, former state representatives justin pearson and justin jones from the tennessee state legislature. we are going without representation. truly taxation without representation . thousands of voters now without an elected representative in the tennessee state house, expelled from the house of representatives to lawmakers expelled after ignoring warnings from the state house republican leadership
7:13 am
about protests in the chamber in the wake of the covenant school shooting in nashville. the core. um, we have process we have procedures. imagine that that happened on the congressional forward during his state of the union address, and people took over in front of him . hold on a bullhorn representative gloria johnson, who joined pearson and jones survived her expulsion by one vote. this is only. empowered and giving deeper conviction for the need to act. cjo choco moved to the district two years ago from guam and castro first valid as a registered voter for jones . i'm angry the community campaign to reinstate jones and pearson gaining momentum, hundreds of emails and lots of phone calls and people want to send them right back up. the nashville metro council will consider suspending its rules on monday in order to expedite the process to send jones back to the house. henry reinstated. yeah. no one can take his place.
7:14 am
and pearson's district is considering making the same move to get him back in his seat. now, regardless of whether either of these special appointments go through both of these men do have an opportunity to run in special elections in their district. the governor will announce those dates, right faith. thank you for that update . now let's bring in abc is jonathan karl, who will be hosting this week later on, john great to have you that story. i mean, these two lawmakers, they have a big name for themselves on a national safe. what are the implications from this? i mean, first of all, they have now become two of the most prominent spokespeople for the issue of gun violence in the nation. these guys and by the way, is there any doubt that they're going to be back in the tennessee house representatives either appointed or elected or both reelected. so look whatever republicans were trying to do by expelling them absolutely backfired. all right. we will see what happens with that now. in the meantime, we are less than a week since donald trump's arraignment. he's using this moment to fuel his campaign. but where do voters stand? and is there any real fallout for the
7:15 am
former president? well you know they conventional wisdom, certainly among republicans and also a lot a lot of democrats as well as that. effectively what the prosecutor did hear what bragg did was insured that donald trump will win the republican nomination. and there's even like some republicans around trump acting like they're celebrating this indictment. i don't see that in trump by the way, but but certainly in some around, but our new poll out this morning shows significant downgrading of trump's approval rating favorability rating in the country and take a look at this half the country now saying that he should have been charged with a crime. what's most interesting? these numbers, though, is what's behind them. and that is the down. how independence that's the biggest shift. basically democrats and republicans, their views haven't changed independent significantly moved in the direction of saying donald trump , they believe committed a crime and should have been indicted. and so we're going to see how that plays out as this campaign gets ramped up. alright john, thank you so much and tune in later this morning. john has an

exclusive interview with former attorney general bill barr just days as we mentioned after donald trump's historic arrest, plus john speaks with tennessee lawmaker justin pearson after he was expelled from office for protesting gun violence. on the statehouse floor a lot to look forward to this morning with today a turning now to ohio, where a special grand jury this week we'll be hearing evidence in the deadly police shooting of jalen walker. he was shot more than 40 times by eight police officers in akron following a car in foot chase last year. abc is alex porsches, joining us now in columbus, ohio, with the very latest alex. good morning. good morning wood. yes, tomorrow, all eyes in ohio are going to be on this summit county special grand jury as the states a g s office begins making its case against the eight officers involved in the fatal shooting of 25 year old jalen walker last june. officers initially tried to pull walker over in the early hours of june 27th for minor violations, and when he refused to stop a chase started during that pursuit. police say walker
7:17 am
fired a shot from his car officers continue chasing walker eventually got out and ran away . he was cornered in a parking lot where officers shot him. at least 40 times. he was unarmed at the time, and walker, who had no criminal record was deemed a deadly threat by police who say they found a handgun on the driver's seat. we're learning to screen jury will consider police body camera footage and possibly hear testimony from witnesses. from that night. this case prompted protests in akron and in anticipation of the grand jury's decisions. akron is bracing for more security beefed up around the courthouse, the city even setting up an updates website and designating a demonstration zone. as for those officers involved, they are back on the force, though they were reassigned to administrative duties. geo alright, alex. i know you'll keep following this one for us. thank you. now to the massive profits, some food companies are reporting. thanks to inflation. yeah, that's the same inflation that's forcing millions of americans to tighten their belts. abc is alexis
7:18 am
christopher's is here now with more alexis. good morning. good morning to you, joe. one thing is for certain inflation doesn't take a holiday stubbornly high prices at the grocery store have americans spending a record $7.3 billion on food alone this easter sunday? overall inflation peaked last june, but food prices are still up more than 10% from a year ago, while consumers budgets get squeezed at the grocery store, major food companies are raking in record profits. conagra which owns chef boyardee hunts and slim jim, posting a 56% jump in profits last quarter compared to a year ago, while quarterly profits that kraft heinz, whose products include jello, oscar mayer and velveeta soared nearly 450% companies passing higher costs. for labor and transportation along to consumers, and as we the shoppers get used to paying more. economists warn that grocery prices could stay higher for longer, geo, not something we want to hear, and alexis what other factors are playing a role
7:19 am
here and keeping food prices so high? there are a number of factors, of course, the ongoing war in ukraine and extreme weather are impacting supply chains. but higher oil prices are another factor since they contribute to the cost of transporting the food. major oil producing countries agreed recently to cut production just in time for the busy summer driving season, so that means consumers could get hit with a double. a whammy in the coming weeks, higher prices at the grocery store and the gas pump. guys are full of good news today , alexis. thank you appreciate it, and we're gonna turn it over now to the weather. samara theodore is here. you've got some good news for us. i do what? we've got a great easter forecast coming up and i can't wait to share that with you, but we're going to start first with some really interesting video out of fruit heights, utah, so come with me about 20 miles north of salt lake city. take a look at this month slide to folks were running to the barn to save the baby chickens and unfortunately they were injured as that barn. collapsed now usually the catalyst behind these mudslides is heavy rain,
