solutions. this is abc 7 news. our top story tonight heartbreaking words from a family friend describing the five-year-old girl shot and killed while she and her familyt left to be learned in this investigation. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. mama dates. the chp now says this shooting from saturday and i actually took place in the fremont area of a 80. as of tonight. no rest have been made. abc seven news reporter jr stone spoke with a close friend of the family and has new information tonight. he was so excited for easter. she had a school event coming up and field trips. she couldn't wait to go. on those descriptions of five year old eliana, who was shot and killed as her family drove along. i 80 in the east base saturday night. her mom's best friend, ashley eliana, called. auntie fought back tears as we spoke with her monday, my

friend up from a crime scene all this side of the freeway where the freeway was closed down. i mean police escorted to the hospital. where we found out her daughter died, but i never thought i would have to go through things like that. i'm sorry, the california highway patrol now says the highway shooting that left eliana dead happened on the interstate in the fremont area. it was a short time later that the family saw a chp officer on the 8 80 shoulder in milpitas and pulled over among her family. eliana leaves behind a brother, who was just 11 months older than her. someone she admired and loved. he didn't even want to open his easter basket. it's still sitting there, he said. i can't open it. lobby if my sister is not here, as family and friends , grieve officers are urging in vowing tove seen

latest on the deadly mass shooting at a bank in louisville, kentucky. abc news reports. the gunman who killed five people in that attack this morning, had recently learned he woulbe, investigators say the 25 year old employee showed up at the bank this morning, armed with a rifle. after he opened fire. other employees locked themselves in bathrooms. some hid inside the bank's vault. he had a long assault rifle and you started hearing the shots to start firing. whoever's next to me got shot in the hip bloods on me from it. officers arrived on scene and encountered the suspect almost immediately. still firing guns. gunshots officers arrived in minutes and killed that gunman. a police officer shot in the head as he ran toward the gunfire is among those with critical injuries. one other louisville metro police officer was also shot. a bank celebratory dance hall christian elementary school to local farms here in the bay area , 100 days into 2023. there have

county is seeing a healthy water supply. valley water released this new video comparing reservoir levels in 2021 to january. 2023 water supply is looking good. since march, 16th . our county has been out of drought on tuesday, santa clara valley waters board will vote on reversing their emergency drought restriction, which would end the 15% call for water reduction that would mean that the retailers who have actions in place for example, surcharges may end those as well, and homeowners say their water bills are outrageous lifting drought restrictions and possibly surcharges would mean great relief to their pockets. i had $1000 water bill at one time. sandra living house lives on two thirds of an acre in los gatto's, you know, i've had a lot of training now on how to save water i hardly ever put on the sprinklers on hand watering like crazy. it takes me hours to water. to a san jose couple that receive surcharges on every

stop in and save today ♪ grocery outlet bargain market ♪ one of whole foods in san francisco stores is now temporarily closed less than a year after it opened our media partners at the sf standard before the story, eighth and market streets shut down at the close of business today because of drug use and crime in the area around the store, a spokesperson for the store said in a statement of whole foods can ensure the safety of team members. it will evaluate to reopening in a statement tonight supervisor matt dorsey, whose district includes the whole foods, said he was disappointed but uninspired by the closure. police are searching for a suspect after a woman was sexually assaulted yesterday afternoon in palo alto. it happened just before three p.m. on the california avenue pedestrian underpass as the woman was walking with her bicycle investigators released a sketch of the suspect in sunglasses and a bike helmet.

they say the victim got off her bike to walk through the underground tunnel, which is where she was knocked to the ground. she told police when she screamed for help. the suspect, grabbed her phone and ran off. after more than three years, two presidential administrations more than one million deaths nationwide. president biden has signed legislation to end the national emergency for covid 19 . the white house had opposed the measure, but did say the president would sign it if it passed. the administration had planned to end the national emergency on may 11th, which is also when the public health emergency is set to expire. that public health emergency is what allowed for free covid test kits and other safety net benefits. the impact of the covid 19 virus has certainly changed almost every aspect of our culture and our economy. a key focus in our work to build a better bay area. one piece in particular is the impact on our local restaurant scene. san francisco has always been a hotbed for culinary innovation and tastes. and this

friday kicks off spring restaurant week. despite the excitement, many bay area restaurants say they are still struggling to evolve and emerge from the pandemic. abc seven news reporter tim johns has that story. 185 of the best eateries around san francisco will kick off the city spring restaurant week. this friday. we have 25 1st time participants. we have 32 restaurants from chinatown. however despite the excitement surrounding the launch, many bay area restaurant tour say they're struggling in a city still trying to get back on its feet after covid the problem spreading across all areas from the workforce staff of left the pandemic kind of took away a lot of our staff and we are starting to get people will returning, but it's definitely still a challenging time for that to lack of customers. you know, there's less people in san francisco like we feel it because they're less customers. places like koi are an example of some of the struggles that they area eateries have faced

since the pandemic once a michelin starred restaurant, it's since closed its doors. the struggling restaurant scene was the topic of the night at a panel discussion at manny's on monday. it's gotten the attention of many in the culinary world after several local restaurants missed out on prestigious awards. we may not have all of the escalades that we used to have, because maybe they're getting more spread around. but it's not all bad news. you know, it's still pretty dynamic, like our access to ingredients is better than anywhere like the caliber of people working in the industry here is really, really strong. many local restaurant owners say they know the city is going through a transition. they still believe our local food culture is one of the best in the world. and after a few hard years, they encourage everyone to support the local establishments. during this restaurant week. i wouldn't be anywhere else. else. i mean, that's for sure. you know, i love san francisco. i love the scene i love you know everything about it in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. many

people are anxious about getting their taxes done ahead of next week's deadline, but a reminder tonight you may have extra time to file the i. r. s extended the filing date for victims of california's severe winter storms affected individuals and businesses have until october, 16th to file returns and pay taxes. irs officials say they automatically identified taxpayers located in the cover disaster areas of the state. which includes many bay area counties, those outside the cover disaster area should call the irs to request the tax relief. wild followers are exploding and vibrant displays this april across the state of california and here in the bay area, we're on the verge of a super bloom, warm weather and more sunshine could mean the phenomenon will really take off in the next week or two. the california department of parks and recreation is encouraging people to get out and enjoy the show. but be mindful when you do. many of our wild flowers are very sensitive to soil disruption and trampling. so it
