safety on a area highways. some people want more cameras after the recent death of a five-year-old girl shot on interstate 880. amanda has more on this from fremont. amanda? amanda: this is a renewed push for freeway safety following the shooting death that happened saturday night that killed five year old eliyanah here on i-880 southbound. here we are, the investigation into what happened on that stretch continues. sky 7 was overhead yesterday as chp continued the investigation along this specific stretch of i-880 at the fremont milpitas border looking for evidence related to eliyanah's shooting death. the roadway was closed for hours as officers walked the roadway. last may the governor announced funding for a pilot program for an additional 200 freeway

cameras to be installed across the state. alameda county and contra costa countythud ight i clear how many of those cameras were installed on 880 and 580 since. we connected with the vice mayor who for years has advocated for freeway cameras with several mayors supporting. contra costa county received federal funding to install a freeway network on i-80 and highway four. the hope is for other counties to get cameras, too. an additional tool in dealing with tragedies. >> i never imagined that six years later i would be back on television talking about this regularly. our freeways have become shooting realms and it has to stop. amanda: farther south end with a focus back on little eliyanah, santa clara defined school district released a statement yesterday regarding her death. the superintendent calling the young girl a bright young soul,

adding that we deployed a district crisis team this morning to support fellow students and families as well as staff and have increased counseling support or her school community for as long as needed. at this point, no arrests have been made and chp has not released an update on any findings in yesterday's freeway search but we will continue to ask those questions and push for answers this morning. for now, reporting live on 880 southbound in a month, amanda castille you. reggie: thank you. the san francisco board of supervisors will try again to hold their official meeting that was postponed yesterday after someone cut out a fiber-optic cable, knocking out the government tv live feed. comcast crews worked all day and through the night to repair the cable. this was discovered yesterday morning when police officers spotted an open manhole at gary and hyatt. the supervisor says that whoever

did it was motivated and knew exactly what they were doing. >> it has been related -- reported to the police and it is a crime. i don't know more than that. i know it took great intention to remove this extremely heavy piece of concrete to get into the vault. it would appear to me that the individual or individuals who did this new what they were doing because they were able to cut the fiber-optic line. reggie: a witness told chronicle that the man wearing dark close was seen beside the manhole pulling at the wires. it's not clear if he was questioned or arrested. the san francisco board of supervisors meeting resumes today at 9:30. discussion for reparations payments is on the agenda. kumasi: the state reparations task force will be holding an event highlighting the history of black and asian american communities. featuring a screening of the film and a panel discussion

covering japanese american incarceration during world war ii and people will be advised on how to get involved in reparations movement. the online and in person event is free but you have to register. reggie: outrage in antioch this morning as a major scandal circulates within the antioch police department. our media partners at the bay area news group have obtained racist messages that are alleged to come from city officers. community members sounded off at this last night at the city council meeting. gloria has more on that. gloria: at least two people had to be escorted out of the antioch council meeting last night after exchanging words with the mayor. residents and public officials commented on alleged racist and homophobic text messages sent between police officers. our media partner, the bay area news group, obtained a report of dozens of racist texts shared between two dozen officers over

two years, showing officers joked about harming black residents. one offer to buy a private dinner for anyone who shot the mayor, who is black, with a projectile used on protesters. they congratulated each other on the violence used in arrests. it's part of an fbi and district attorney investigation and has not been made public but community members are reacting to news about the text. >> it's disgusting. it's vile. and we are not going to tolerate this. it put a hole in me. >> what is happening, i can't believe it. it's disgusting. it's more than discussing. >> they have no business. >> to all the officers involved in using racist terms, calling black people by really derogatory terms, it's, it's, it's too much. >> there's a lot of good

officers in the department. one thing i noticed when i came here from san francisco, the dedication of these officers have to their profession. i'm not going to indict the entire organization. gloria: that's the police chief, who said this is unfortunate and that officers possibly involved are not currently on patrol and during the meeting the mayor expressed his anger about the texts and vowed it to make changes, saying they will not sweep this under the rug. it's unclear how many officers are implicated in this report. kumasi? kumasi: thank you, gloria. evacuation orders are in effect because of a mudslide threat. state officials warned that there could be flooding in multiple areas as snow melts in the mountains. experts are not sure how bad the flooding could be and say it depends on how warm it gets. >> people should be concerned. there are no dire predictions but there is the potential.

ku indiana have been evacuated after a massive fire at a recycling plant sent toxic fumes into the air in the city of richmond near the indiana ohio border. you can see large plumes of black smoke coming from outside the plant. authorities are urging residents outside the evacuation zone to shelter-in-place. officials say the fire quickly spread across the facility. >> there was a semi trailer at the rear of the structure fully

involved and full of plastics. it had plastics piled up against it. and there was piles of plastic all around. kumasi: the facility processes recyclables like plastics, leading to concerns about air safety. the epa and state environmental damage division are evaluating hazards from the fire. reggie: happening today, expelled tennessee lawmaker justin pearson could be reinstated. jobina: two members of the tennessee legislature were expelled last week after leading a gun-control protest on the house floor following the deadly school shooting in nashville. jones, who represents nashville, was reinstated on monday. today the shelby county of commissioners is scheduled to vote on appointing him in an interim bassitt he until a special election can be held. democrats have a majority of the board. the governor of tennessee is joining calls for tougher gun laws. he says he wants legislature to

investigation into saturday's deadly shooting. sky 7 was overhead as chp officers were back on this stretch between milpitas and fremont, searching for evidence tied to the death of five-year-old eliyanah. with that tragedy comes a renewed push for freeway safety. last may the governor announced funding for a highway program, installing 200 freeway cameras across the state. alameda and contra costa were included in the push, though it is not clear how many of those cameras have been installed since. for years, the hercules vice mayor has advocated for freeway cameras. with the support of several mayors they received federal funding to install a freeway security network on interstate 80 and highway four. now as an added tool when dealing with such tragedies the hope is that other counties can get cameras, to.

killing a six-year-old boy and his mother in a crash will be arraigned in work. ralph white the third was leading police on a chase in rodeo after he stole a car and reportedly hit another car that carried the mother and her two twin boys. the mom died in the crash, the twins were taken to the hospital with injuries. one of the boys and quit a quick condition later passed away. also in rodeo, flaring caused smoke to rise into the air from the philip -- from the phillips 66 refinery. the cause of the under investigation. this follows a series of notable flaring incidents from nearby refineries. there was one in martinez in november that had hazardous materials released into the air. it prompted a warning earlier this year for people not to eat any produce grown in their own yard. kumasi: looks like there might be another addition to the list of possible 2024 presidential

candidate. senator tim scott is launching an exploratory committee today. according to a source familiar with the plans the republican senator from south airline is expected to take art in event from iowa today. he would be going head to head with donald trump and nikki haley. more candidates are expected to join the race in the month ahead. reggie: the man accused of attacking paul pelosi will be in state court as the judge sets a trial date. he's already facing a trial on federal charges. charges in the san francisco superior or case include attempted murder, elder abuse, and assault with a deadly weapon. there is going to be a communitywide prayer vigil in kentucky tonight in the aftermath of the deadly mass shooting at old national bank, where five people were killed. jobina is that the live test with more on what we know. jobina: several people are in

critical condition, including the rookie training officer. newly released body cam footage shows the moment the officers try to locate the government as bullets knew from inside of the bank. nickolas wilt was sworn in less than two weeks before the shooting. he's now listed in critical condition after being shot in the head. his training officer was grazed by a bullet after returning fire . police say the shooter, a bank employee who sources say was about to be fired used the ar-15 that he bought just days before the attack. the weapon will be eventually auctioned off to a federally licensed dealer because kentucky law bans authorities from destroying seized guns. >> the murder weapon will be back on the streets one day under the kentucky current law. jobina:

state of local municipalities to make changes to gun laws. the shooter's family says overnight they never saw any warning signs here. five people were killed in the shooting. eight were injured. the white house is once again calling on congress to pass them reform legislation. kumasi: thank you. san francisco's public utilities commission is ending the water shortage emergency thanks to all the wet weather we have seen and they also voted to lift a drought surcharge starting in may. they are keeping a voluntary water reduction order in effect state doubt -- state drive to declaration. dozens of groups are teaming up to sue the epa over water pollution standards. the lawsuit claims they have failed for decades to regulate the flow of chemicals into waterways. environmental groups say 50% of all rivers and streams in the u.s. do not meet water quality standards and they blame the

kumasi: the california state treasurer today will be joining an effort to help vulnerable residents of chinatown know what their options are for keeping medical coverage. it has to do with resident ayden acting three weeks early to end the covid-19 national emergency. millions of californians could lose health coverage. they will be joining staff from chinese hospital and other volunteers to speak to chinatown residents about coverage options. the national emergency regulation wave rules for obtaining coverage as quickly as possible during pandemic. health care and service workers are going to rallies at uc medical centers throughout the state manning a $25 minimum wage. some of the lowest paid workers in the uc health system say that
