martha raddatz has the latest. >> good morning, this is an extraordinary report an interview with one teen-ager who says the man who leaked troves of classified documents did work on a military base and was part of this online group popular with gamers, a group united by teir love of guns, military gear and god. overnight stunning details. the washington post interview with the teen-ager who says he was a member of the discord server group where the sensitive documents were first shared. >> first find out that these were public, made public. it felt like my heart was beating out of its chest. i could not believe that this was happening. was hamming. we didn't realize the shear just immense nature of these leaks. >> the minor interviewed by the post with his mother's permission, who asked not to be identified, telling the post he knows the identity of the

leaker who he calls og, but will not disclose og's real name, where he lives, or the military base where he says he works. but describing him as a charismatic gun-loving gamer in his early to mid 20s and that og began posting classified information to discord last fall. >> i was first made aware of these documents i want to say about 6-8 months ago. the documents were often listed as ukraine versus russia at first. however, it slowly spiraled into just intelligence about everything. >> the teen-ager says he joined the invite only discord group of roughly two dozen members some from foreign countries at the start of the pandemic and told post reporter shane harris he's read hundreds of classified documents posted by the group's leader. >> this individual, og, was apparently sharing this

classified information, which was illegal, after all, and he appeared to understand that, to prove a point. to prove that he could to impress the people around him. kind of almost like an ego trip. he wasn't acting as a whistle blower, he was trying to impress his friends. he appeared to think that they needed to know things that ordinary people didn't. that he enjoyed telling them about secrets and things that he knew that ordinary people did not. >> that information eventually making its way to other discord groups with thousands of users, causing a global diplomatic fallout since becoming public, revealing sensitive u.s. intelligence and notably sparking accusations. this was an operation to impact the war in ukraine. something the members deny. >> he was just saying that this may be the last he ever sees of us and he was thanking us for all the good times that we had together and hoping that everything would blow over. >> according to the post, it's

picture. the pill used in abortions in the united states remains legal and available for now. there are several new limitations. a federal appeals court stepping in overnight to oppose tighter rules that would limit use of the drug mifepristone, allowing it to be used up to seven weeks of pregnancy. and deciding it can no longer be sent in the mail. the appeals court weighing in after conflicting rulings whether the abortion drug should be banned. democrat led states are not waiting for that to come down, wasting no time taking matters into their own handso stockpile t ab drug. washington s enough for three year supply in that state. this morning, the biden administration reacting saying they'll continue to fight this in the courts. we could see this make its way up to the supreme court nearly a year after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. >> thanks. now to north korea's latest missile launch. issued emergency warning

aaron a you are ski is there. >> jury selection begins in two hours. the financial penalty against fox news, the judge accused fox news of misleading the court and delaying turning over pretrial evidence, including an off air recording of rudy giuliani appearing to undercut the very claims about dominion's voting machines he was about to macke on the air. a fox attorney only found out about the recording recently and turned it over. the judge is likely to appoint someone to investigate whether fox news has been truthful or negligent in its handling of all of the evidence. the judge has also been concerned that fox news has been invasive about the role fox boss rupert murdoch played at the channel. dominion said it hampered its ability to present a case. dominion is suing fox news, arguing fox knowingly pushed lies

about the 2020 elections and its voting machines so they wouldn't lose viewers. fox calls the case a political crusade in search of a financial wind fall. rupert murdoch may be called to testify with some of fox's biggest stars like sean hannity, maria bartiromo romo, and tucker carlson who confided in a text message that some of the claims fox was airing about the dominion machines were shockingly reckless. jury selection is expected to last two days before opening arguments are scheduled monday. >> thanks very much. bring in dan abrams. cases like this are traditionally hard to win. what exactly does dominion have to prove? >> they have to prove what's called actual malice. essentially what that means is that you knew or should have known that what was published or said was false. that's a higher standard. now remember, this judge has already ruled it wasn't true. step one is proving it was

false. the judge said as a matter of law you proved, dominion, that these statements were absolutely false. but fox still has that deense, the plaintiffs still have to prove that fox knew or should have known it wasn't true. >> do you know what each side is planning to argue? >> the plaintiffs will argue they absolutely knew it, we have text messages between them, the proof dominion would say. fox will say it was a newsworthy event, that the president of the united states was alleging this, and they were simply covering this as a matter of news and as a result that they shouldn't be liable. >> could this have bigger implications for news organizations and free speech? >> depends who you ask. you ask fox news, they say it coffee norm us implications, effect all sorts of cases. you ask dominion, they say no. there are no other case. this is particularly terrible. as a result, they say it

gio has what you need to know. >> right now, the latest in the case of shanquella robinson who died vacationing in mexico. her family saying they plan to continue fighting for answers after the justice department said it would not bring charges. janai norman is here with more. so unsettling. >> it is. so many people are asking so many more questions. this is unwelcome news to her family and many on social media who pushed for investigation into what happened. remember, mexican authorities issued an arrest warrant last year. it is unclear how the new announcement from u.s. officials will impact that investigation or the extradition request. this morning, nearly six months after her mysterious death at a mexican resort, the family of shanquella rob in some son asking for answers. in a statement, u.s. authorities saying they would not pursue charges. doj saying based on results of the autopsy and after careful deliberation

and review of the investigative materials the available evidence does not support a federal prosecution, adding it is important to reassure the public that experienced federal agents and seasoned prosecutors extensively reviewed available evidence and concluded that federal charges cannot be pursued. >> everything that was determined by the mexican government that was included in the investigation would have been turned over to the u.s. government. so there is potentially information that we are not aware of that would also weaken this particular case. >> the attorney general's office in california telling abc news they have no comment on the doj decision and that their investigation remains open. the 25-year-old north carolina native was on vacation in mexico with six people last october when she died within 24 hours after arriving. her mother says they told her she died of alcohol poisoning. days later, video too

addictive products to minors, they face lawsuits on those grounds. wednesday, the company agreed to pay six states and washington, d.c. $462 million. new york attorney general la tish a james said the targeting of underage students was widespread. this is a different settlement than the one in september where they agreed to pay nearly 440 million to settle investigation by 33 states. all told, the company has now settled with 45 states for over $1 billion. juul was forced to pull most products off the shelves in 2019. since then according to federal national youth tobacco survey, underage vaping has been cut more than in half. juul use declined 95%. last year they tried to ban it entirely, that was put on hold after legal challenges. a spokesperson for juul saying their priorities are to, quote, advance tobacco harm reduction for 31 million adult smokers

crying a sbing saying mom. i am like okay, what happened. mom, these bad men have me, help me, help me. >> she said they demanded ransom. he didn't want a wire transfer, told her he would pick her up. >> i started to wonder if these people are tracking my mom, they could have obviously been putting information together, trying to track me or my siblings to make this a reality. so it definitely scared me. >> within minutes they confirmed her daughter was safe. she says it was all a scheme using artificial intelligence to replicate her daughter's voice. >> most people in the modern age have some form of online identity, have probably spoken in some ways that's been recorded, especially if you're under the age of 25. this becomes very challenging as we move into a future where we do have ai generators or synthetic audio when it comes to verification and validation.

>> michael: all right eva. thank you. >> going to turn now to new recession fears this morning. some staff at the federal reserve expecting the banking crisis to cause a mild recession this year. elizabeth joins us now with more. good morning elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning michael. the federal reserve is trying to avoid a recession but the recent banking crisis is making that goal more difficult. in a just-released summary of the feds meeting back in march, economists at the fed predicted a mild recession starting later this year. so what would that look like? banks could get more cautious about lending money. if you are a consumer that means it would be harder to take out a loan like a mortgage. businesses could also be forced to make more layoffs as they cut their costs michael. >> michael: elizabeth, what can consumers do now to recession-proof their budgets? >> right. so first it's important to take stock of your finances right now. one general rule of thumb is to try to build up enough emergency savings to cover 3-6 months of your living expenses.

if you're getting a tax refund this month, consider putting that into your savings account. you can use sites like bank rate or nerd wallet to find accounts offering more than 4% interest right now. really important to earn more money on those savings you have at the bank. >> michael: that's very important in addition to watching for possible recession federal reserve has been trying to fight inflation. are there any signs that inflation is being brought under control? >> reporter: okay. so the good news here is that inflation is starting to cool-off. we saw that prices rose 5% in march compared to a year ago, which was the slowest pace in nearly two years, and you can see the progress in staples like the price of eggs, a dozen eggs now averaging $3.45 compared to almost five bucks back in jan, but other everyday costs, like rent, car insurance, gas, are still going up. so this really is a balancing act for the fed as it's trying to bring those prices down even more while also avoiding that recession.
