news. dan: a police shooting a new spurt -- new work. ama: you are looking live from the scene right now. this is on the corner of cedar boulevard just off pushing to find out from authorities. but now working to get that information. we will go to him live. good evening. ama: we want to begin with the major update today in the murder investigation of bob lee. dan: that suspect is another tech entrepreneur who was tied to lee. ama: j.r. stone has been all over this case from the very beginning and he's in the newsroom tonight. reporter: this has been a very difficult day for many who knew bob lee and those who the suspect here. all sorts of rumors swirling but the fact that there has been an arrest and police aren't saying what they believe the motive was. nema mattie is behind

facing a murder charge in the killing of tech executive bob lee. >> the biggest thing is that hopefully this gets justice for bob and his family. reporter: bob dalton had dinner with lee before he was fatally stabbed. he doesn't know the mattie but he is aware of a connection between lee and him. >> the people involved are friends. reporter: phil matier says police have been watching him before the arrest was made. >> police were afraid it tip off the suspect. reporter: went down. >> the killing are very unusual. what were these tech executives doing at 2:30 in the morning and why was a knife used? that's an unusual weapon for the killing in this case.

reporter: sources tell me that thursday morning, police could be seen and blending tower. four blocks from where lee was found with stab wounds last week. in emeryville, he was arrested at his home and neighbors left in shock. >> very welcoming, kind neighbor. reporter: a different opinion than that of aaron gibson who did website work for him but is still upset over a dispute they had regarding his pay. >> he was cruel. he was accusatory. i didn't think he could be capable of killing somebody. reporter: he says it's important not to jump to conclusions about the motive here. >> the defense is going to be looking at all aspects of this case. they may argue that this was at most a manslaughter and not premeditated. that's what's interesting about the weapon. why was a knife used?

that's not what you would normally think of in a premeditated type killing. reporter: clark also says toxicology reports will be important here. words are to on alcohol or any drugs? also, where there any defensive staff -- stab wounds and where were they on his body? he will face a judge for the first time friday morning. j.r. stone, abc7news. ama: bob lee's family posted a statement to facebook today about the arrest. it reads, as a family we are thankful to the hard-working detectives at the sfpd for bringing his killer to justice. we will ensure that this pers is not allowed to hurt anyone else or walk free. dan: this case has fed into the narrative by some that san francisco is a lawless, dangerous city. >> perception is sad in this community that we have.

to see where it's going. it is so sad. dan: you need to dig beyond the surface and look at the statistics to see what's going on. violent crime in san francisco is lower when compared to other major cities. as we saw with the killing of bob lee, some people were quick to point the finger at possible suspects including the on house. >> they are saying it's a homeless person. that's based on nothing. that does damage to people who are on housed, who are being blamed for a murder that they had nothing to do with. dan: often the homeless and on house are targeted. preston is one of several people who have been asking for apology from those who label it as a sign of what's out of control in san francisco. we want to make sure you have the full picture when it comes to safety. our neighborhood safety tracker is right there at your

fingertips. find the right now on the front page of our website, abc7news. ama: we are monitoring a deadly police shooting in newark. one suspect is dead and another person is injured. tim johns is live there tonight with the latest rest. reporter: that's right. i don't know how clearly you can see behind me but there is a very active scene in newark this evening. several local law enforcement agencies including the district attorney's office or on-site here tonight. authorities haven't released all the details just yet but here is some of what we know so far. police say they got an alert this afternoon from a so-called community safety camera that a car suspected in a carjacking had entered newark. officers located the vehicle outside the chase suite hotel in they conducted what they call a high risk stop. officers shot and killed one person, another was transported to a local hospital for unknown injuries.

that suspect has been released and is in custody. they recovered a weapon at the scene at some point. we spoke with some folks who work in this area and they say they heard the gunshots. >> one girl said she saw the police officer. i don't want to shoot you. i don't want to shoot you. reporter: officers have stressed that this is an ongoing and active investigation with many more details to come. tim johns, abc7news. dan: the california capitol was evacuated because of what the california highway patrol calls a credible threat. the assembly ended in session early in the senate moved its session. things return to normal at 10:30 in the morning and visitors were allowed inside which made for an eerie experience. >> a prescheduled tour. we showed up, came in. no problem. it's completely deserted. everything is closed. it's weird in here.

dan: jackson pinney of hayward is accused of threatening to shoot up the capital in sacramento. he was arrested this afternoon in granite bay. he's also accused of shootings last night outside the kaiser permanente medical center in roseville. no one was hurt. ama: khanna isn't backing down on his call for dianne feinstein to resign. she asked to be temporarily replaced on the judicial committee yesterday. it's complicated and she should step down, he says. >> every single senator, republican senator can object to that. senator schumer has done the right thing. he said he's going to try to get that done in the senate. but we have to see if that's even possible. i guess my question is, why not just take the step and resign instead of going through all these motions? ama: feinstein who is 89 years

old is recovering from shingles. she says she will return to washington as soon as it is safe for travel. dan: when it comes to drought, 9% of the state is still in drought. that's a big drop from last week and no product -- no part of the bay is still experiencing drought. let's bring in sandhya patel to talk more about this and the focus on flash flooding worries this weekend. sandhya: the worries are coming from the sea or nevada. i want to show you the conditions. last week, 25% at the state -- of the state in a drought. go back to october 1. 99 percent of california was in a drought. huge improvement. 9% in a trap. we continue to see its ranking and that's encouraging. we remain out of the drought as we check out what's ahead. this sierra snowpack is epic. it's healthy. 240% of normal statewide.

dan: the case of a san mateo woman kidnapped while living in mexico. the fbi office released unseen surveillance videos from the moment she was abducted last november. lauren martinez is hearing from the family and has their story. reporter: the fbi released new sailing -- surveillance video of the moment the san mateo woman was killed and met -- kidnapped in mexico. >> we believe she is alive. we are hoping that this information will allow us to bring her home. reporter: the video shows her

walking her -- home with her dog on 20 -- november 29. it captured the moments before she was abducted. the fbi says the second video shows when she was confronted by kidnappers and forced into a gray volkswagen jetta. >> we are hoping these videos jog the memory of people who may have seen the abduction, the individuals or the vehicles before or after the abduction. reporter: at least five suspec drove away in five different vehicles. you can see her dog loose on the street. her dog was later recovered by a family member. authorities say barbara was targeted. >> they hunted. they waited. they didn't move with urgency. you see them and it's repulsive. reporter: gustavo deleon says kidnappers have been holding his 29-year-old sister hostage for money. >> i don't know of the exact quantity of money that they are

asking for. but i know that it's unattainable. reporter: he says his sister is still out there. >> they have sent proof of life. they've sent a video where my sister is pleading for help. reporter: our will -- barbara was taken by a busy intersection just two blocks away from her home. >> there has to be something. there's no way that nobody saw anything. reporter: for the first time in a while, he says, these videos have given him hope they will generate leads. >> i ask you to please help end this nightmare that my sister has been put through for five months now. reporter: lauren martinez, abc 7 news. ama: our mission here at abc 7 is to build a better bay area. tonight, we found a breakthrough to solve a problem that our area knows well. the housing crisis. we were at an event where san jose's new groundbreaking project was revealed. you are seeing the start of the city's largest interim housing

site. city officials and nonprofit partner celebrated the start of construction for the new housing project. it's located on brandon lane and will house 612 people. the structure will make up three stories of apartment units with 200 beds. the project is an effort to get homeless individuals off the streets. >> we are at crisis level and we have to do something. doing nothing isn't an option anymore. ama: san jose is open five interim housing sites since 2020. dan: some pg&e customers may see a reduction on their electricity bill thanks to a new proposal. pg&e and other electric companies submitted the plan to the public utilities commission. it includes a fixed monthly charge that's based on income. pg&e officials say it will give relief to customers who needed the most. the cost is as low as $15 a month and as high as 92. if approved, it will go into effect by july of 2024.

ama: steph curry packed the house tonight at oakland grand lake theater for the opening of the documentary steph curry underrated. >> i'm constantly trying to find the space to be able to survey my life, survey what's going on. to let my mind think about how i got here. ama: it chronicles his rise to stardom from his college days at davidson to last year's championship run. the oakland mayor was there as was joe jacob among others. ryan kugler produced the film. he says it might be hard to think of him as an underdog but it explores that and daring to dream big. >> that idea is what the film is about. sometimes, it's ok for your dreams to be unlikely. it's ok to persevere in the face of people telling you that what you want is impossible. ama: the film will get a wider

release later this year. dan: that gets us to tonight's advancer at 11:00. looking ahead to the days to come. we are supposed to be objective but not so much in this case. we are biased toward our golden state warriors. today was the first blue and gold day in the bay area to get donation -- dubnation excited for this night -- the warriors will start with their nba title defense on saturday against the next-door neighbor sacrament of kings. we saw flag raising at city hall today. we met with one fan who came quite a long way to cheer for a dubs downfall. >> i'm from sacramento. i stuck with them through thick and thin. sacramento all the way. dan: he is obviously out of his mind. that fan traveled all the way from england and feels confident. we will have to wait and see. you can watch game won only here on abc 7 on saturday night.

coverage begins at 5:00 p.m. with the game immediately followed by after the game. ama: but then the next day on sunday, it's an all-out celebration for the high school state champs. the oakland high and oakland tech basketball teams. the city will honor them with the parade. the girls will celebrate their third consecutive title while oakland high boys commemorate their first ever championship title. each team will ride on a bus around lake merritt. it kicks off at 11:30 am at children's fairyland. dan: the weekend is almost upon us. let's turn our attention to the weather. ama: sandhya patel joins us with what's coming. sandhya: nice-looking weekend. take your plants outside. let's talk about what's coming later on this year. that's an el niño watch issued by the climate prediction center. this is for the upcoming spring through winter. currently, we are in neutral conditions. this is expected to continue through spring.

there's a 62% chance of el niño developing between may and july. range of possibilities. four in 10 chance of a strong el niño. one in 10 chance of no el niño towards the end of the year. it is still too early to predict precipitation. el niño is the warming of the waters near the equatorial pacific and it has impacts on the weather globally as you know. we've been through some strong el niño's. 97, 98 being one of those. stay tuned. i know this much for sure. look at these live pictures. we have absolutely gorgeous conditions. one thing that is center stage is the blue and gold. taking a look at live doppler 7 tonight. mainly clear conditions. patchy clouds toward morning. as we check out what's ahead, satellite radar showing of low pressure moving away as high pressure is getting closer to us. the two are separating a bit.
