♪ ♪ >> byron: good evening. thank you for joining us. we begin tod tonight with a development in the league of highly classified military documents. that rocked the intelligence community and their allies around the world. the department of justice says it was not a spy or a foreign power whose but the top-secret trove online. it was a 21-year-old national air guardsman, an i.t. specialist. >> the justice department arrested jack douglas teixeira in connection to an investigation, retention and transmission, classified initial defensive information. >> byron: the investigation into who leaked a massive trove of classified material from the pentagon breaking wide open today.

this afternoon, heavily armed swat team arrested 21-year-old jack douglas shatera. >> teixeira is an employee of the national guard. >> dan: was seen here reading as law enforcement closed in. sign that massive leak exploded in to the headlines last week, authorities have been on the hunt for who released military secrets online. most of which were marked top-secret. the move sent shockwaves through the intelligence community and creating an international crisis. >> we continue to work around the clock to understand the scope, scale and impact of these leaks. >> byron: the government's is the culprit was a low ranking enlisted airmen to an i.t. specialist. photos of the documents revealed online many of which abc news has chosen not to show indicate that u.s. may have been spying not just on an adversaries but also on our allies like israel and south korea. even ukraine.

the documents include detailed information of the war in ukraine, iran's nuclear program, china and north korea. >> countries across the globe spy on friends and foe alike. that is not unusual. when it is disclosed, however, can cause sensitivities in vital relationships. >> byron: john cone was the acting dhs under secretary for intelligence and the biden administration. >> there are two concerns from the national security perspective. does the content that is contained in these documents cause damage to national security? more importantly, does the information in these documents disclose sources and methods? do they tell our adversaries how we collect information? because if our adversaries understand how we collect information, it can lead to the death of human sources. >> byron: administration official scramble to get to the follow-up printed by responding this morning. >> president biden: i'm not concerned. i'm concerned that it happened. but there's nothing

contemporaneous that i'm aware of that is [indistinct] >> byron: teixeira was stationed in nashville because massachusetts. his role was described to abc news as combat i.t. >> the fact that a young member of the military allegedly was able to remove classified documents from a secured facility to photograph those documents and to post them online, that illustrates a very significant vulnerability in our national security apparatus. >> byron: power to teixeira's arrest, the washington post reported them in behind the leak is a "young charismatic gun enthusiast who is part of a server group on the social media platform discord where the sensitive documents were first shared. the post folk -- spoke of the teenagers appearing in a chat. says he was a member of the same discord group as the leaker. >> when i first found out that these were public, i felt like my heart was beating out of its chest.

we did not realize the sheer just immense nature of these leaks. >> byron: the teen calls leaker o.g. and says he started putting classified information to their discord group last fall. >> i was made of -- made aware of the documents six to eight months ago. the documents were often listed as ukraine versus russia at first. however, slowly spiraled into just intelligence. >> byron: the teenager also told the post o.g. showed these documents to show off, not to be a whistleblower. >> i spoke to o.g. about two days ago. he signed off saying that he did not want to be associated with any of us to bring anything bad to him or to bring anything bad to us. >> byron: the alleged leaker will make his first court appearance in massachusetts tomorrow. if mystics of highly sensitive information have a plate of the u.s. decades past. some of the biggest and most

than legal and illegal. >> byron: after a are looking to the press, snowden sought asylum and russia. if he were to return to the u.s., he faces up to 35 years in federal person. >> so many people call you a traitor. many call you a hero. who is chelsea manning? >> i'm just me. >> byron: jesse madden is the former military intelligence analyst convicted of 20 charges including espionage for linking the largest trove of classified documents in u.s. history to wikileaks. michael maker juju chang said she withdrew after her release from prison. her sentence commuted by former president barack obama in 2017. while working as an intelligence analyst, manning says she saw the horrors of war unfold in classified material and she later leaked to the public. >> reporter: you decide to break the law. what was it that you were seeing that could compel you to do that? >> i stop seeing just statistics

and information and i started seeing people. >> this disclosure is not just an attack on america's foreign policy interests. it is an attack on the international community. >> do not think any of it was going to threaten national security? >> no. >> byron: with some of the documents manning leaks were ultimately found in osama bin laden's pakistan compound >> juju: you may have given information to our enemies. >> i have a responsibility to the public. it is not black and white. it is complicated. >> byron: there's still a lot to learn about this latest document leaked. scope or the motive. and questions remain about how the government will protect classified information in the social media age. the pentagon today defending their protocols. >> we do have stringent guidelines in place for safeguarding classified and sensitive information.
