military and intelligence community will take new steps to secure sensitive information. elizabeth has the latest now from the white house. elizabeth, good morning. >> good morning to you. this trove of leaked classified documents has set off alarms within the intelligence community and troubled u.s. allies as it raises questions about america's ability to protect its most sensitive secret. as the investigation continues into how 21 year old national guardsmen jack teixeira leaked hundreds of top-secret u.s. military documents, president biden and defense officials are demanding answers on the security clearance process that gave him access. >> i've instructed the department to make sure that they get to the root of why he had access in the first place, number one. and number two, to focus extensively on the extent to which it all occurred. >> teixeira's security clearance level requires a back on track but analysts say those checks

might not capture interactions online. another key question, how teixeira was allegedly able to print and upload photos of the documents to the online platform discord for months before the pentagon noticed. >> that's what they're going to be looking at, it's just because you have the ability to go on the network to do maintenance on it, should you also have the ability to open documents, print documents without any supervisors being notified. >> he now faces up to 15 years behind bars, harged with unauthorized retention and transmission of national defense information and willful retention of classified documents. the documents appearing to reveal sensitive details on military operations like the war in ukraine. the criminal complaint against teixeira disclosing he held top-secret clearance since 2021 as part of his job as an i.t. specialist in the massachusetts air national guard. >> this airman's job was a cyber transport journeyman, which to most people is an i.t.

specialist, so it's somewhat he who maintains computer systems for these classified documents to recite on. >> he comes to family with close military ties, his stepfather retired up the serving 34 years in the same national guard unit. his mother a volunteer with a veterans group. both stating publicly silent since teixeira was taken into custody thursday from their massachusetts home. >> he has yet to enter a plea edge and expected appear again in court on wednesday. president biden commended law enforcement for their quick action on his arrest and directed the military and intelligence community to take steps to secure sensitive information. whit. >> elizabeth, thank you. joan into this week, jonathan karl has exclusive and a view with republican senator lindsey graham on the follow-up from the pentagon intelligence leak, plus democrat asked senator amy klobuchar on the legal battle over access to the abortion bill now before the supreme court.

>> now to the wild weather this weekend, ten states in the east facing a severe weather threat after storms wreaked havoc yesterday. samara theatre is here with the latest. it looks like you're starting there in missouri. >> yes, good morning. yesterday we had severe storms drive through the heartland, real impressive updrafts brought down some hefty hail. this is newport missouri, storm traits are out there, you can see how it shattered the glass. actually 4-inch hail, that's about the size of a softball. these are the hail reports, 145 reports from yesterday. what's going to happen is this line of storms is now moving to the east. it's not quite as robust, we're looking at a marginal threat. by 7:00 p.m. we could see some storms stretching from pittsburgh up into detroit down into roanoke, charlotte, and myrtle beach. >> all right, let's hope everyone stays safe. now to the major week ahead of the supreme court, the battle over the abortion pill front and center court rulings are due on other big issues and abc's jay o'brien joins us from the court. good morning to you. >> good morning.

there was this collective sense of legal limbo this morning and the clock is ticking. the justices have until midnight wednesday to rule on that abortion pill matter. the case -- the question they're facing is somewhat narrow here. the court has to decide if mifepristone, the abortion pill, will be allowed to be available in its current form while the larger court case about the drug's approval by the fda plays out in federal court. on friday, justice samuel alito side of the drug can briefly stay available while he and the other justices make up their minds on that question and the consequences here are stark. abortion rights advocates estimate what's referred to as medication abortion makes up more than half of u.s. abortions him at least four democrat-let states have already begun to stockpile abortion medications, bracing for the court's ruling at all of this is turning national attention right back onto the supreme court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority you will remember and overturn roe v. wade less than a year ago. there were protests in front of

the supreme court and across the country yesterday ahead of this ruling in the matter what happens with the abortion pill access availability ruling, that overall case, the larger federal case into the fda's approval of mifepristone, that is expected to continue to drag on for weeks and any ultimate decision there would likely be appealed right back here potentially to the supreme court. >> i know you're looking to other big issues on the supreme court plate this week, what are you seeing there? >> yeah, the justices are going to hear a case into religious accommodations at the workplace, which could have applications for workplaces across the country. there's also a free-speech case they will hear into facebook messages sent by a convicted stocker and they have some big decisions to make too into issues like voting rights and affirmative action, but those decisions aren't expected until closer toward the summer. >> a big week at the supremecourt. jay o'brien, thank you. overseas now and the warning for americans in sudan to shelter in

place due to an attempted coup that is said to have killed more than 50 people. abc's tom has the latest now in those deadly clashes. good morning. >> good morning. yeah, violence quickly spiraling out of control in sudan. battles breaking out in densely populated areas of the capital. military fighter jets firing missiles overhead, buildings burning with a deadly power struggle playing out between sudan's regular army led by the country's de facto leader, and a powerful paramilitary faction of the sudanese military known as the rapid support forces led by another sudanese general. that paramilitary group launching an apparent coup with gunfire ringing out, civilians running for their lives. reports overnight saying at least 50 civilians killed with three workers from the u.n.'s world food programme purportedly among the dead and nearly 600 injured, many critically

according to a sudanese doctors group. drone footage showing the smoke-filled sky above the airports, fighter jet circling overhead, passenger planes parked up, hit amid the fighting. smoke also rising from near to sudan's presidential palace. before the violence erupted, the u.s. had been encouraging sudan's military leadership to transition towards a civilian-led government but those efforts are now eclipsed by the fighting between these two military factions, the u.s. secretary of state antony blinken urging both sides to halt the violence. >> a scary situation unfolding there. tom, thank you. staying overseas but now turning to ukraine where a war weary population is marking its second orthodox christian easter under fire. he sees ian pannell is in kyiv with the latest very good morning to you. >> yeah, good morning. heavy fighting continues in the east of the country, even though it is easter, orthodox easter, as you say.

russians trying to take character about their advance is costly with heavy casualties. a cost you dominic ukraine and russia, celebrant and orthodox easter, also a day for people to try and take stock of the war in the enormous loss of life. president zelenskyy speaking today said the main symbol of easter is a victory of good truth and life. vladimir putin attending church in moscow and issuing a statement talking about hope, good thoughts and deeds. his forces continue to kill civilians in ukraine. the toll from a russian strike on the eastern city friday rising, the number of wounded has increased to more than 20 with at least 11 dead and rescuers are still trying to work to recover people after a residential apartment block was hit. and overnight, russia attacked a region as worshipers celebrated easter, officials were porting a church and also in the city was destroyed in the attacks. >> incredible that they are still dealing with this. thank you so much for that.

back home now to indiana and a new concern over toxic consequences following a fire at a plastics recycling plant. the epa warning residents not to touch any debris, calling a possibly poisonous. abc's alex presha joins us now with more. good morning to you. >> good morning. this morning officials are warning that just because the fire is under control at that plastics plant in richmond, indiana, it doesn't mean that the danger is over. take a look at this, epa officials, some wearing full on protective gear, combing the community for debris in that place, they focusing in on schools in richmond and just over the ohio border, even using drones to search rooftops. the fear is that some of the debris might contain asbestos or other toxins. crews will also be looking at parks, businesses, and homes and in the meantime, the epa is warning residents that have debris in their yards not to mow the grass, urging them to call officials for testing and removal and at that plant, the fire is under control but firefighters are still battling small flareups as they are trying to clear the site. the town's mayor urging

residents not to drive or walk near it saying it is still extremely dangerous. new contaminants including hydrogen cyanide and benzene have been detected. officials are going to continue to test and analyze samples but as of this morning, that half-mile evacuation order is still in effect. >> yeah, those concerns remain. alex, thank you. an urgent search this morning for three americans missing on a boating trip from mexico to san diego. they haven't been heard from in nearly two weeks, the u.s. coast gard and mexican navy now working to try and find them. more from los angeles. good morning to you. >> i spoke to their family, they are really concerned and they are pleading for people to keep an eye out for their loved ones or their boat. they say it could be what saves them. this morning the urgent search for three american sailors missing in mexico. >> i have not been out of contact with my father pretty much my entire life. we are incredibly close. >> carrie, her husband frank

o'brien and william gross disappeared 12 days ago after leaving a resort town in mexico for san diego on this 44-foot sailboat named ocean bound. >> getting repairs done on the boat in mexico. >> the mexican navy and u.s. coast guard are investigating the disappearance after family members say the o'briens, who are coast guard certified captains, needed help bringing their large boat up from the resort town. gross, an experienced sailor hired to steer the vessel back north. >> my dad has been sailing since the '70s, he's on the multiple boats, sailing up the coast california. >> the coast guard and their families say they were supposed to stop in cabo son lucas. the mexican navy says there's no record of them ever arriving or giving a report of their location. now the families are pleading for anyone who sees their dark hold boat to try and get in contact with them and help. >> i want my dad home. i want him safe. i want the o'briens home safe.

>> the family says it's just been a roller coaster of emotions for them for the last few days and they just want their loved ones home. so far the mexican navy says marine information broadcasts have been sent over radio requesting that mariners be on the lookout but there have not been any reports of sightings so far. >> hoping those families get some good news. thank you. turning now to boston and an emotional remembrance as the city marks the tenth anniversary of the boston marathon bombing. the attack when three people and injuring hundreds of others when two homemade bombs detonated near the marathons finish line. breanna from our boston affiliate joins us live with how the city is honoring those victims. good morning to you. >> good morning. on the 10-year anniversary of the boston marathon bombings yesterday, the city came together for one boston day, a day of remembrance to honor the victims and survivors of the attack that changed the city forever. five lives were cut too short.

martin richard, crystal campb campbell, lu lingzi, mit police officer sean collier and boston police officer dennis d.j. simmons buried their families gathered on boylston street in the morning for our ceremony at each of the memorial sites near the finish line. a public remembrance was then held in the afternoon when the crowd joined in a moment of silence at 2:49:00 p.m., the same time of the bombings ten years ago. and together as one boston, the city dedicated a commemorative finish line and unveiled the new one boston day marker in the heart of boylston street. as we reflect on that tragic day, we also look forward to the 127th running of the boton marathon, it's taking off tomorrow. we have the countdown behind us, 30,000 runners will be participating in this historic race. they will be joined by nearly 10,000 volunteers and countless spectators in the marathon is on track to raise $40 million for charity. >> just under a day and

investigating a shooting at a city park last night that left two people dead, at least for others injured with gunshot wounds. shots rang out around 9:00 p.m. investigators say there were hundreds of people in the park at the time. the shooting of course comes just five days after a gunman killed five people in a bank just 6 miles away from that same park. >> also right now, senate republican leader mitch mcconnell says he's looking forward to returning to the capital on monday. the 81-year-old has been recovering after suffering a concussion in early march. the senate is reconvening after a two week spring break. >> and the longest running show in broadway history will take its final curtain call tonight. i've seen that seven times, so i've got my fix. >> good. we do start this half-hour with intensifying efforts to find a missing mother. it's been two weeks since madeleine kingsbury was last seen, police: her disappearance suspicious and say they are getting many leads. jaclyn lee joins us with more. good morning. >> good morning to you. 17 days. that's how long maddie kingsbury has been missing. police and her family in minnesota still frantially searching for her as we are learning more details about the relationship between the 26-year-old mother and her children's father. that father made his first public comments this week saying he had nothing to do with her disappearance. this morning, as officials try to piece together by a minnesota mom would go missing, we are learning new details about the father of her two children. mattie kingsbury vanished two weeks ago, police: her disappearance suspicious. in winona, thousands have showed up to search for her.

>> the leads that are coming in is unbelievable. we are actually getting hundreds of them. and we have a lot of information we are trying to process right now. >> adam, who has a five year old daughter and her 2-year-old son with kingsbury missing in that search. he was recently served with a protective order. social workers placing a 72 hour hold on her children. in the documents, police say she is considered an endangered missing person and that when they arrived at the home, he became noncooperative, taking one of the children in the house and locking the door while shouting expletives. eventually complying. the document also states he does not have custodial rights. >> it's clear that this case i think is all tied to the custody and control of these children. if maddi is gone, he would ultimately at some point, in his mind at least, have full custody of his children.

>> fravel has denied any involvement to kingsbury's disappearance writing in the statement "i want the mother of my fiber rolled into-year-old to be found and brought home safely. i want that more than anything." according to the police timeline, kingsbury and fravel dropped their kids off at day care shortly after 8:00 a.m. on march 31st and then returned home. fravel saying he left the house in her dark blue chrysler minivan around 10:00 a.m. when he returned, she was not there. maddi's sister now telling "abc news" that the two lived together but there were no longer in a relationship and that maddi was looking for a new place to live. >> we love her and we are not going to stop. we are not going to let her become a statistic. >> police say they are now processing all the evidence for clues, including the minivan, maddi's home, and the jacket she was wearing that morning. >> her family saying this is the most traumatic time in their life at all they want is to bring her home. as for adam fravel, he says he
