building a better bay aorward. r unfortunate reality of gun violence within our communities. this is, however, an example of how technology our community and excellent police work. can help us all. stay safe. today 10 days after a five year old girl was shot and killed while riding in a car on interstate 80. investigators outline what happened before the shooting and what led to the arrests of three men. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley dates police. the chp and the district attorney detailed the shooting on the streets of fremont that happened just before the freeway shooting, and they explained how the suspects were found just hours later in santa cruz, abc

seven news reporter zack fuentes has the story. five year old eliana was riding with her family to dinner on saturday night, april 8th before seven when she was shot in the for ser sitting right next to her court documents say the suspects yelled the gang slogan as a shot into the vehicle that they believe belonged to a rival gang . chp says at this point they believe the family in that car were just innocent victims. almost immediately after the shooting, the family found a chp officer on the road they pulled over. grabbed their young daughter and handed her to the chp officer asking for help. he did everything he could to try to help her and requested medical services. last week, umberto and naya, crystal, nyala, valderrama and emmanuel serrano were arrested in connection with it. investigators saying they believe all our surrender gang members tuesday, the alameda county district attorney shed more light on the identical charges each is facing, including one count of murder, six counts of firing into an

occupied vehicle and one count of assault with a firearm following an earlier shooting in fremont, if convicted, as currently charged each defendant faces a minimum of 42 years to life. fremont shooting happened less than a half hour before the freeway shooting. fremont police say the victim was walking on fremont boulevard when one of the suspects commented on the victim's red clothing, which was the color of a rival gang. a suspect got out of the car and shot at the victim, who was not hit. tuesday fremont police revealed that that shooting gave them critical information that eventually lead to an arrest in santa cruz three hours later, including footage from nearby cameras that identified the suspect, vehicle and license plate and captured the majority of the incident. including one suspect, pointing a firearm at the victim, with investigators confirming that both shootings are believed to be gang related. the question was posed by multiple reporters to d a pamela price at tuesday's press conference as to whether there will be any gang enhancements. we are working closely to evaluate the evidence and to determine what the if there will be additional charges. as the

while ago. they're here for the start of the special five pm city council meeting. now it was a small group. they say they're not here to disrupt the city council meeting, but they will present a list of demands. mayor thorpe says this meeting is to call for an audit of the police department. the community says they're calling for change. the area, community groups and antiochus residents are calling for change of the antioch's police department. they were sending pictures of each other to each other, with gorillas talking about essentially like that, they feel like they're at a zoo. um i mean it just really disturbing stuff. you know what? that's how they view the people of any attack. um how could you ever cheat a person humanely as a human if you don't even see him as one has one of the antioco residents calling for more accountability, many who gathered say allegations of racism at the antiochus police department. aren't new. jason woody lives in oakland, he says . this isn't just a problem in antiochus. i really think it's time that we do something about getting these racist police officers at the departments and

making sure that you know these things don't happen. protests come after published reports reveal the change of racist, misogynistic and homophobic text messages sent by antiochus police officers. over a period of almost two years, according to the city. almost 20% of the police department is now on leave, but close to 40% of the police force may have taken part , according to the contra costa county public defender's office that includes high ranking officers. i have concerns about the vice president of the police union, serving as a member of the internal affairs team. i think that's a conflict. i think that creates problems. in a previous interview, the abc seven news mayor lamar thorpe, laid out what he expects from tuesday's meeting. mayor is calling for an audit of the police department's internal affairs, the hiring and promoting practices as well as an equity audit, which is a study of the fairness of the police department's policies and practices will be able to collect data to make decisions. and decisions that i hope you get at the heart of culture at

consequences. we're having a hard time attracting and retaining teachers union wants to increase their salaries by 23% across the board. instead the school district is offering increases for teachers at different stages in their career less for first year teachers and up to 20% for the most tenured teachers and staff, it's called structured salary increases. the union opposes it. we're not to be able to agree to a two tier system. the district says. quote o u. s. d s proposed compensation package would mean teachers in oakland will for the first time in decades. be paid higher than the average salary for educators in our region. we think it's a really good offer the education nonprofit oakland reaches weighing in on these negotiations, demanding that there be no disruption of classes are kids were already struggling before the pandemic. those struggles have been deepened since the pandemic, and we need to spend as much time as

we can. um recovering and we need every day to recover. last teacher strike in 2019 lasted seven days, keeping students away from the classroom. leanne melendez, abc seven news today is day two of a new effort called one oakland spring clean . yesterday the focus was on fixing potholes. today it's abandoned cars, oakland has shifted the responsibility of towing away from the police department. it is now handled by the city's department of transportation. crew members say district seven accounts for the majority of service calls about abandoned cars. district seven includes the southeastern part of oakland bordering san leandro from the hills to the bay council member trevor reid, who represents the district talked about why removing abandoned cars is so important. reduce the risk that it poses for public health safety issues for traffic impeding for blocking neighbor's front doors, their driveways,

in a unanimous vote, the city of san jose is removing a large statue of former san jose mayor thomas fallon. today the city council voted to remove the statue back in 2021 on west st james and julian streets for more than three decades. latino and indigenous groups of san jose held protests against the statue holding the us flag on land previously owned by mexico during the mid 18 hundreds. their removal cost the city nearly $500,000. and place the six ton statue into storage right now to the latest on the shooting of 16 year old ralph ural in kansas city, missouri. he's a teenager who was shot after mistakenly showing up at the wrong home. the 84 year old homeowner is now charged in that
