shooting. >> at this point we two people were detained at a separate location yesterday afternoon. at this time no confirmation from pleasanton police about whether those suspects have been officially arrested and charged. we are told a worker here at this home depot just on 580 was trying to stop someone from stealing. that person was then shot and later died. witnesses told police they saw some sort of struggle which led to the shooting. details about where the shots were fired and if this associate was on any sort of security team have not been released. pleasanton police say two suspects were seen driving from the store after the shooting and officers soon caught up with them. that chase ended in nice oakland. a man was detained along with a woman. there nissan pathfinder ended up being towed. no confirmation about the payers current status. whether they were arrested or

charged. police radio cars detail the car chase that happened after shots were fired at the height -- at the home depot along fight -- along 580 on johnson drive. >> in pursuit requesting chp. 580 foothill. a red nissan pathfinder. 106 at 90 miles per hour in three. >> pleasanton and dublin used to be really safe places to go and visit and live. it seems like it really has changed in the last five years. amanda: depot writes, "we are heartbroken over this senseless tragedy. blake was our associate and friend and our hearts go out to his family and everyone who knew and loved him pure coda -- who knew him." the alameda county corner is not

releasing his name. reggie: california is attempting to crack down on retail theft. proposed legislation would allow felony charges to be filed against people who have multiple left related convictions. petty theft and shoplifting are among the crimes that would be eligible. officers say this would offset what was approved by voters in 2014. shoplifting is a misdemeanor. if the value of the items stolen is below $950. >> the bill is proposing a balanced approach to focus on repeat offenders to hold them more accountable, while at the same time providing diversion programs. treatment programs like substance abuse addiction, as well as mental health. reggie: the bill had its first hearing in committee yesterday. kumasi: community members in

antioch demanding an immediate action to address the texting scandal involving the police department. was at that meeting and dozens of community members impact that city hall. the mayor is calling for an audit of hiring and promotion practices and its equity policy. we caught up with one antioch resident before that meeting started. >> with protecting the community. amongst themselves there was a certain mentality we are less. black folks are less. the women are less. i don't understand how you can protect and serve a community who you feel so negatively towards. kumasi: the racist, homopho and sexually explicit messages were uncovered into other crimes by police. at least 17 per -- at least 17 officers and 20 are on leave.

the public defenders office estimates up to 40% of this department could be involved. reggie: rou investigatnsith oakland to propose a strike. the timing depends on if both sides couldn' rch an agreement primarily on salaries. oakland teachers are the lowest paid in alameda county. in 2019 a teacher strike in oakland lasted seven days. happening today in the east bay, children's hospital workers are planning a one-day strike outside the oakland and walnut creek facilities. according to the union, the hospital is accused of refusing to protect jobs and medical services for union workers. this comes after union workers picketed concerned about staffing levels. workers will picket at the oakland hospital starting at 6:00 a.m.. a rally set for noon. we reached out to children's for

a statement and we will let you know when we get the response. kumasi: happening today the supreme court is set to decide if restrictions should be put on a commonly used abortion drug. the drugmaker want the judge to reject the ruling saying it will cause chaos for doctors and women. vernor newsomayr wh today's ruling is he announce protection for pharmacies who dispense the drug, new rules to ensure privacy of women seeking an abortion and making sure it continues to be available here in california. >> simply would not be happening to men and boys. this is an assault on women and girls and their fundamental rights and freedom. kumasi: californians voted to enshrine abortion rights in the state's constitution. reggie: and historic agreement

in the 11th hour. the 1.6 billion dollars defamation case against fox news settled just moments before the case was supposed to begin. jobina fortson's life with the details. jobina: the parent company struck a deal in the trial filed by dominion voting systems. fox agreed to pay the election tech company $787 million. just moments before opening statements were set to begin in court. dominion had asked for 1.6 billion dollars arguing fox had damaged its reputation are peddling phony conspiracy theories about its equipment. >> truth matters. lies have consequences. today's settlement represents vindication and accountability. jobina: fox news released a statement acknowledging certain claims it made about dominion were false. adding, "we are hopeful our

kumasi: today is day three of oakland's major beautification work. volunteers participating in a new effort called one oakland sprinkling. monday the focus was fixing potholes, yesterday it was abandoned cars. abc 7 spoke with crews husseini say district seven account for the majority of abandoned cars. the area that stretches from the southeastern part of the hills. city council members who represent that district tell us why removing abandoned cars matters. >> reduce the risk it poses public health safety issues for traffic impeding, blocking neighbor's front doors, their driveways, environmental hazards being left out on our streets. the conditions it brings into our community being addressed today. kumasi: for day three, today, it is community crane -- community

cleanup. people are going to come together and pick up trash. let's talk about oakland soda tax. a new ucsf study found purchases among oakland residents have dropped 27% since the tax took effect in 2017. the study's authors says the tax has helped to lower people's risk of diabetes and unhealthy weight t cost theyn $ p st six years. ggie: draymon is suspende for game three of the warriors playoff series with the kings. it comes after an altercation during monday night's game. in the fourth quarter this player grabbed greene's leg when he went down. greene's stomped on his chest as he ran away. the nba says the decision to this -- the decision to suspend green was based in part for his history of unsportsmanlike help.

technical issue impacted travel in the bay area and across the u.s.. in a statement the airline said it temporarily paused its flight activity yesterday morning to work through data connection issues resulting from a firewall failure. the department of transportation said at the airlines request the faa paused southwest departures as the airline worked to resolve that issue. a be spoke with the vice president of southwest pilots association. >> our dispatching software, is the software all of our paperwork together, gives of our flight plan. we cannot go without it working. it is an outdated, old system. kumasi: he went on to say this issue is different than what happened to southwest back in december but it is still an i.t. failure. reggie: alaska airlines is removing its check-in kiosk as a part of an effort to modernize airport lobbies. travelers will now be encouraged to print your own boarding pass at home or use your phone

shortly after we know and a man and a woman were detained in oakland following a brief chase. on the scene in pleasanton witnesses at the home depot tell police the associate was trying to stop someone from stealing. a struggle followed then came the shooting. one police arrived, the man inside the store bleeding. details about where the shots were fired have not been released at this point. pleasanton police say two suspects were seen driving from the store and officers soon caught up with them in oakland. in a statement home depot writes, "we are heart broken about the strategy. our heart goes out to his family and everyone who knew and loved him. the alameda court says they are not releasing details due to instruction from family members.

investigation -- another round resume. abc in the newsroom with more. gloria: a strike depends on whether both sides can reach an agreement, primarily when it comes to salary. oakland teachers among the lowest paid in alameda county, ranging from $52,000 to $99,000 the more senior teachers. union says it has had big of consequences in terms of attracting and retaining teachers. the union wants to increase their salaries by 23% across-the-board. instead the school district is asking for increases across-the-board for different stages. that would be less for first-year teachers and up to 20% for the more tenured teachers and staff. called structured salary

increases. the union opposes it. >> the district is currently providing the structured salary increases. only tenured teachers and teachers with a lot of experience will benefit from this. our newer teachers who are the lowest paid in the county will not benefit from this and when we see rising costs of housing, rising costs of food and the cost of living, 3.5% will not retain or attract new educators. teachers cannot afford to stay in the bay area. >> the district says compensation package means teachers in oakland for a first time in a decade will be paid higher for the average salary for educators in our region. the oakland nonprofit weighing in on reaching the agreement demanding there be no disruption of tax -- no disruption of classes. parents want to avoid a strike.

reggie: san francisco board of supervisors unanimously passed a resolution urging the state to provide more money for bay area transportation agencies. that comes as we continue to hear from multiple agencies that there will be major funding shortages once federal money from the pandemic runs out. they have alarm about the potential of dramatic loss in services. make living in the bay area harder. it may drive some people to have to leave the region entirely. reggie: the san francisco director of transportation says about 400,000 people ride daily. half of them are people with -- people of color and 70% of writers make less than $75,000 a year. >> the steak is not only service cuts but denying san franciscans the opportunity to get to work, to get to school, to get to medical care, to get to social services.

since march 14 and has had to rely on generators to care for the animals. a necessity that has come at a big price. >> if you add fuel, rental, delivery and everything else, it is in excess $50,000 a month. >> it made it dangerous for staff and visitors to be there. while cleanup effort has been ongoing, the damage has made it harder for staff to do their job. everything from regulating the body temperatures of some animals to filtering the water of others. >> even in the very worst of circumvents -- of circumstances, animal care is top priority to us. >> they hope to reopen in june. in the meantime they say the support from the community has been invaluable. >> it is heartwarming to know we are not out here alone on an island. we have such a strong community behind us. kumasi: bay
